I legit count syllables and utilize a thesaurus a whole lot when writing. It’s a bit monotonous but normally I end up with something I really like.
Good ideas -- standard for creative writing of other kinds besides lyrics, too. One idea I like from fiction writing: come up with a final line first, then write everything else leading up to that. This is similar to classic novelists like Dickens and Poe who often came up with the ending first so everything leading to it made sense.
tanukishady I heard somewhere that you should just start writing and let the story write itself, I guess it can work backwards as well.
Good idea. Thanks!
@@ssxldnxm9512 That's how i do it but can never finish it for some reason
This was really helpful and i bet you ur lyrics are amazing and don't suck
Well, better than no lyrics at all at least 😅
i agree! great vid
instaBlaster
I agree its very helpful
Thank you so much for the tips. I struggle to write lyrics and have struggled for years. I will try your method tomorrow for sure!
At first I read that as "I'll try your meth tomorrow for sure!"
Tomorrow never comes bro. Do it today!
Thanks PewDiePie
I would like to share my method: At first, I think that the singer remembers and performs a song better if he is connected to his lyrics and feels what he wrote. If you're familiar with writing poetry the things work better and easier for you. The ability to write down a story of your or someone else's past life happenings is a great benefit because it includes the emotional component that makes you more emotionally connected to what you wrote. The second thing that I consider most important is imagination, If you have ever written a book, stories, diary or poems You would know what I'm talking about. The ability to create "stories" directly from your imagination and shape it into music lyrics would give you a sense of believing in faithfulness off those happenings that you're writing about. As for vocabulary, no matter what is your native language, you need to read as much as you can, read what you like, reading foreign literature is of course a +, read poems especially because it will give you the skill to create lyrics and everything that it consists of. Read lyrics of the bands you like, songs you like, and most important train your ears and brain by listening to music.
And the last thing, I would always recommend to everyone who writes lyrics, please write as much as you can, practice practice practice, write a diary, write poems honestly and from your soul and heart. Do not avoid emotions, that's the biggest source of fuel for every art that you'll ever have. Of course, there's more to talk about but this is short and clear. Hope it helps.
Fact
i aint reading allat LOL
I have the same struggles thou.
One thing that I sometimes do is recording my singing with "fantasy words" over an Instrumental that I'm working on. Later I just replace these random words with actual verses that make sense.
I'm doing it this way to catch a vibe and/or a melody that I randomly come up with.
That's a good help for refrains (sometimes).
I think Linkin Park did it in a similar way on some records, if I remember correctly. Chester used a girls name(?) repeatedly to get a melody for a song. (It's basically just about the vowels)
Thanks for your videos dude and I'll try it your way on a track \m/
(I'm sorry if I messed something up with the grammar or english in general. I'm german.)
Your English is good
Thank you so much! I'll be trying this.
Thanks! Good luck!
This is great advice. Thank you.
I usually work on country songs but the instrumental in your opening sounded so good. Lyrics are exploding in my head
Thank you, Ulf. These tips have really helped me understand some of the difficulties I have had in finishing a song. I have used the first step unconsciously for a while. I will be listening to the news or a Ted talk that I find interesting and hear a statement that is illuminating or enlightening on the subject I am interested in. Sometimes the inspirational statement is poetic sometimes it is not. But when I begin accumulating synonymous words and phrases as well as antonyms if the idea or subject is serious such as a song about global warming, I inevitably begin feeling poetry in word combinations. usually by the time, I finish the collection I find numerous poetic phrases that I can use in telling the story.
I do not think that this methode to write lyrics is a kind of cheating. Actually a lot of bands or songwriters go deep into a subject and start to do researches about to become a more realistical and organic vibe for the song. That is similar as your guide describe it. To get into a story, and finding facts, details etc. gives you a easy way to came out with lyrics. Unfortunately I not use to write lyrics in the past but I want to come into this. Your video gave me some good inspiration to get my ass up to make progress with this. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Yeah the research thing is also a really good tip!
Thank you so much, this is so helpful. A great way to get past that scary blank page and into the flow of things!
This is awesome, thank you! I really enjoy singing, but I've always had trouble trying to write lyrics. Maybe this will give me what I need to make both come together...
Great tips! I follow step-by-step your advice and I just finish a good one in 20 minutes.
List of words a great idea for sure
Top tip. Putting it to practise today! Thanks
great advice. thanks for the help
Great video, I've been finding your tips helpful
Thank you for sharing these tips. English is not my first language and most of the times I struggle to find vocabulary. So I'm going to try and let's see 😅
I’ll do all of the things you mentioned, but also look up all of those words up in an idiom dictionary. That’ll give you loads of ideas and phrases to build with!
this video made the most sense to me, a beginner. thank you!!!
I keep a list of song titles that i come across that i more often use to help me write lyrics. Sometimes it is just as a reference to inspire a certain feeling or circumstance, sometimes they becomes a lyric (provided it wasn't someone else's to begin with lol) and sometimes I write the lyrics that would belong to that title. Either way, it gets me going.
Yes indeed. This was very helpful. I have years of experience of writting to the point that I listen to my old work and I'm still amazed of what I wrote then. And even so, I still feel that I need direction, tips and any help to keep me going. I haven't written in years and I literally feel that I have a MAJOR writers block. This is why I found this video. Love these tips and it's amazing because it reminded me that I already did most of these things, yet still learned a few other tips. Very helpful video. Thank u 🙏
This is just so generous of you passing on your excellent ideas for words! You are one of my Music Internet You tube heroes! I love Analog and can hear the difference! I trust your recommendations 100% Continue making great music!
Wow, thank you so much. Now i feel i have to get back on this horse 😘
Thank you for this video brother, it really helped me alot
As a musician whose native tongue is not English, I do those EXACT steps. Very good video, cheers!
First let me start by thanking you for the awesome tips ! I have trouble with Spanish vocabulary
I was born in the old country, I speak Spanish & English but when I'm trying write in Spanish...my brain runs into a wall. You gave me excellent advice with the Brainstorm of words because I'm constantly translating from English to Spanish in my brain unconsciously almost every day of my life and specially when in company of family fiends or when I visit the "old country", I would love to find a Metal band that can not only write but sing lyrics in English...and or Spanish...French...German...Italian...Portuguese...
like Swedish Metal bands for example most do Eng.& Swedish
Sepultura (Brazilian) had a few in Portuguese,Slayer none Tom is Chilean (I'm a huge fan) but not any in Spanish, Ramstein Eng-Ger.(fan)
I want to start or at least try writing in Spanish,in English I have no problem, specially when I'm going through my worst times emotionally ,grieving a loved one, relationships, and political lyrics just flow out...
Thank You !!! 🤘
that did help, thank you
Would be cool to see another one on cadences and how they interact with rhythms in the music. Thanks for posting, man! This idea about creating a huge palette of words is super helpful
1. Come up with a song title
2. Brainstorm words
3. Run words through thesaurus
4. Run words through rhyme dictionary
5. Find a red thread and make a composition
Thanks for the advice!
Nice shirt. Horns up to Seitan :)
🤘🌾🤘🌾🤘
Thanks!
3 years ago but oh well thx man helped me out a lot
for anybody else i have method that i came up with its called the five finger method
first you take a word and find five rhyme with it
after you find five rhyme
then you start a new word or stay on that
same word. its really helps you
great tips. even in 2020
Thank you.
Dammit. Checked out your band after watching this. I really fucking dig it.
+Yannick Krickel really?! Awesome. How did you find it? Just realised I forgot to share the link links I was talking about hehe.
Thanks bro
Those are very useful insights. Thank you for that. To me good lyrics are almost as much about complementing the rhythmics and the feel of a song as they are about the things you're actually saying or singing. This is why I sometimes make up fake words in my head to a song first, to see how much syllables would feel best to sing on a certain part. This often inspires me to find a headline or a certain punchline which then inspires me to find a topic for the lyrics. This is the best case scenario of course, most of the time it's just crap.
Main video starts from 1:50
Hey thanks I got alot from that
I write a lot of wordplay and its hard to make lines more lyrical for myself.
Other than that i have toms of ideas and names for songs but gotta write faster.
woah, plus writing in a second language has gotta be tough
Damn this man's a legend he has no dislikes
One of few videos 😂
spoke too soon.
Can drop for example in #For Reason as title
poetry kinda helps
so what are your bands? i'd like to listen, but this is the first and only video of yours i have seen, so i don't know.
Who's this guys band I wanna check them out
You mean my band? Grace.Will.Fall
Hi 😊😁... please could you help me with my dream? I wish to learn my lyrics in many languages..
Go through all the words again
In your rhymes lexican
Maybe you don't wanna rhyme
It's cheesey but I liked rhymes
From times to times
Are you swedish. Cause it sure sounds like it
Du har helt rätt!
How to put rhymes in the song
What can i say, I like rhymes 🥳
But seriously, it can be a good framework for lyrics.
Han låter svensk🙂
Han är det!
Writing a song isn't that hard, finding a good name to that song is a pain in the butt.
Cristian Padilla Salinas mines the opposite, i have sooo many ideas but i also focus on wordplay so its harder to make it show skill
totally opposite for me, I cant write more than the first verse to the first chorus after that im stuck... but finding the title is probably easy bcs u just pick a dope sentance in the lyrics
Don't write them faster, write them better. Good lyrics are genuinely pretty rare
+Andrew Tucker i find that i write better lyrics if i write more lyrics. And this helps me to get more words out of my head faster so I don’t get stuck. If I would wait for inspiration it would never come 😕
HoboRec I agree. At the end of the day, you just have to crank out the songs consistently... which means you're going to keep improving your writing AS A RESULT. Consistency is the key. Your songs will get better over time. Better to write nine mediocre fast songs and get that one great song in your alloted time frame, than to beat yourself up over a song that may never get written due to perfectionism. One could literally wait and work on a song for years...and then never finish it, due to wanting it to be perfect. We become better writers by writing MORE.
Who wants to write a song, i need help
this video made the most sense to me, a beginner. thank you!!!
