Could we do an opposite video of this please. When you have a poem or lyrics of some kind and need to come up with a melody. This is where I'm having the most trouble.
@@theviper1999uk i don't think this person specifically wants to turn poems into songs i believe they're like a "lyrics-first" writer, and now they wish to write melodies to those lyrics i could definitely be wrong, but i think that's where the comment was coming from. in which case, it would be tremendously helpful to a lot of songwriters
i may be off base but if your lyrics first , wouldn't you just take the rhythm of how you phrase a line and add note value to that phrase, then once you have note value just slide them notes up on the staff for desired pitch I could be way off base but sounds logical to me I'm in the process of learning on my own, have been for years now. long road, but worth it
It always gives me the feeling that the singer thinks I'm an idiot when he explains his metaphors. Just making sure in case the listener is too stupid to understand it. I don't think that's good advice at all. Of course you shouldn't write gibberish whose meaning nobody understands, but it's the very function of metaphors not to be overtly explained. If you have to explain a metaphor, it's simply not good enough. It's like explaining jokes or commenting on comments.
Andrea has been a teacher and mentor of mine. Such a great video, she is very inspiring! This is such useful, real world info. Keep doing videos like this!
I'm fascinated by songwriting. What made me look up this is recently finding out Tevin Campbell's Tomorrow song was first released as an instrumental 13 years prior by the Brothers Johnson. I was inpressed by how the lyrics were written to match the melody of the song.
Andrea is a legend and a gem! And that triplet feel is gold....gonna try it on a few sections. Especially on a ballad my guitarist wrote. Thanks Friedeman. 👊😎🎸
Great idea for a video! It’s amazing to watch how her mind works and it’s a great example of how to use some of your tools like the songwriting decks. Bravo!
Loved it, answered so many questions I had. Waiting for last few weeks for this video, glad to see it here finally. Thank you and Andrea for such an insight, truly inspirational!
Hey, I liked the "making a shipwreck of my heart"! It works with the clouds and the wind. I think this is the kind of exercise that would definitely make me a better lyricist and songwriter. Thank you!!
hey man just wanted to check om you, i really enjoyed your videos and learned A LOT from you, i noticed its been a year since you last made a video, is everything okay my man?
“but it feels like yesterday” sticks out like a badly broken thumb, but the rest of the pieces hang together nicely, tied together by the staccato delivery in each section, (yesterday aside !)
I've been writing and composing for 40 years. I can't really say I've ever followed a "method". It seems that my subconscious mind really creates the best songs. When it comes to me the songs seems complete, I hear it playing in my head and I just have to capture and record it as quickly as possible. I have 60 demos on my UA-cam channel "Frank Coffey Songs" and they don't even have a single style to them, just all over the place.
It's always great to see how writing can happen from pieces (in this case the neat of melody). I have up on lyrics a long time ago, but sometimes have the guitar or a virtual instrument play the melody in my music. If it's possible, more colla notation with Andrea would be great. I've seen her in Berklee videos and think content like this is great. I may even write songs with words.again!
That bridge would need something in between to work lol But great video overall. I used to right songs like this but I think it can get tricky of you're not writing ballads and there's lots going on. Ballads tend to sound great with just nice chords and a steady voice. In a lot of situations you are putting the melody and vocals over existing elements outside of just chords. Still I think playing on a piano or guitar is good for shaping out the song especially for writing chorus melodies since they help bring the emotion out
i miss the artist series, i would love to see Friedemann analyze more artists. The song series was a bit too dense for me. Studying a group or an artist is just more VAST. infact VAST is a good band. A Tame impala episode would be sweet.. tons of good ones though like Panic at the disco, Bring Me The Horizon, Nothing but Thieves, Crumb, Hatebreed. It takes a whole lot of study to make that series but that is why they are a great, repeatable view. i go back through his artist series every now, tons of content and nuggets of wisdom for creatives
For me, it's usually the case that I can think of parts on the piano that are very melody-heavy, so less just the rhythm, a melody. Exactly this melody gives me difficulties and so in the future I will only work with chord progressions, what a pity if I have to do without the beautiful melodies on the piano. Is there also an approximation of how melodies can be dealt with?
Great video, awesome information and very helpful, BUT it is not what most song writers do? start mumbling searching for the words that fit the melody, it would be more interesting to see those great writers that get the lyrics first then the melody, is not how most hit songs are made? lyrics then melodies, what i would like to see is how writers fit the melody to the lyrics. Like Berklee and Pat Pattison teaches, writing lyrics from a title. etc. It would be awesome to see a video similar to this but setting melodies to lyrics.
Wow, that "Frankensong" was really beautiful! I have a lot of respect for both of you BUT what I don't understand is all the emphasis on the lyrical content, sensory writing etc. What blows me away and what I want to get good at is melody, rhythm, harmony and regarding the lyrics, only how the words SOUND and FEEL. But all I find in songwriter videos and courses is the "poetic part" that might be important for Country and Americana, but for my part, I only know about 60% of the choruses and maybe 1-5% of the verses, even of my favorite songs! The rest is lala something and that's fine by me. For me the "message" is maybe 10% of the songs, how can I learn about the other 90%?
Your channel is so cool and your videos are so informative and interesting. Could you make a video breaking down how Mariah Carey writes songs/melodies? She is a very interesting songwriter and singer to analyze
The sheer volume of the video is a bit distasteful for a man who seems like he is experienced in his craft, but the transcript had great quality information, thanks.
Could we do an opposite video of this please. When you have a poem or lyrics of some kind and need to come up with a melody. This is where I'm having the most trouble.
This is exactly where I struggle too! I second this :)
Some poems are meant to be poems, but yes i agree it would be fascinating
@@theviper1999uk i don't think this person specifically wants to turn poems into songs

"If you use metaphors make sure you explain them". She said it as like an after thought, but it might be the best advice here.

Omg, i follow Andrea on TikTok, her advice is incredible
She is a gem.
I agree, she's amazing.
So awesome!! Huge fan of you both! Thank you so much for putting this out!! ❤️👏🏼🤟🏼
Pure Gold. Thanks!
I love being subscribed to this channel. Every time a new video pops up I swear it’s perfect timing on my music journey! Some sorta voodoo?
this was such a fun video to watch and equally as informational! Thanks ou for this great content
This video is SO good. Even if you know your theory, it's a reminder of your full repertoire.
DUDE GIVE US MORE VIDEOS!!! Please
Fantastic advice jam-packed into one video. And the audio edit at the end was pretty fantastic. 👏
Loved it, answered so many questions I had. Waiting for last few weeks for this video, glad to see it here finally. Thank you and Andrea for such an insight, truly inspirational!
Please make more content... this is amazing!
Master Tunesmith, Andrea Stolpe. Thank your for sharing this lesson.
Guys, PLEASE return back. Your content is gold. Why did you leave?
thank you for showing this process.
Hey, I liked the "making a shipwreck of my heart"! It works with the clouds and the wind. I think this is the kind of exercise that would definitely make me a better lyricist and songwriter. Thank you!!
Loved seeing this! I read Andreas book and it taught me so much about lyric writing!
This was very helpful for me . I'm at this process in my writing. Thank you !!!
To be honest you could not have chosen a better choice of teacher to work with. She has mentored me and boy she kicks ass
Gosh I adore this lady!
She's awesome
Ok cool, but the important question everybody wonder is: why 2 screens if only half is used? lol
🤣🤣🤣
This question has been haunting me since I’ve watched this.
This was dope! Thanks 🙏🏾
Great video. Andrea's tips and this exercise are so helpful.
Wait. You’re BACK!!!!
Thank you, It was great to see Andrea Stolpe develop the lyrics. :-)
Really inspired me on this one
Really great video! Loaded with value! Thank you guys so much!
Wonderful video. Nice to see a pros thinking process.
The bridge reminds me of Old Dominion, and their attempts to fit a million words in every line. Clever.
You guys let us in on this? This is crazy! Thank you!

Andrea, i learnt a lot thanks
Thank you so much for this extremely informative video :)
Hey bro, God bless you.
Repent of your sins. :)

Great tips!
Wow 👌 amazing song writing
Love Andrea!

This was smashed!!

Are these melodies applicable to any other choruses
Awesome!
She snapped on this shit
I appreciate this one👍🏿
Im looking for songs in harmonic Major and its modes.
Could anyone help me???
How do you know to pick out the rhythmic pattern for the melody? This might be a vague question 12:18
I need that song
What’s the difference between half and full second when runtime is on a cd 💿 player?
Anybody home ???
So he gave her rhythm not melody right?
Rhythm is melody. Once the words are set your melody becomes the rhythm of the song.
@@barryzito5721 melody has rhythm i wouldnt say melody 'is' rhythm, imo he really gave her a motif to build off of
Very cool.

About lyrics can u give us deep explainations about those power words 20% people will forget the rest of your lyrics ( in addition formula) thanks,
I'm really interested in buying the vocal melodies and hook master file, do you still sell that?
dope content once again. - when's pitch trimester hitting?

What about tempo?

Interesting vid, thanx, actually this is the best way for me to write lyrics, but I need to find a composer to work with🙁which also sux!

This's so complicated, I wrote fabulous courses just by listening to songs.
I hate music now after seeing this hehe
This way is a too to improve your songs Melodies as well.
I'm watching india🇮🇳

What she keeps singing is that a Prince song/melody?

What’s going on with this channel? Are you done making content? This was 8 months ago
Can someone here tell me about his insta page if he has?
She is indeed inspiring! It seems like it's an easy task, but totally opposite haha.
Wow
Very useful, thanks. (Just wish Andrea's choices of chords were more imaginative. Added 9th chords are so cliched in modern ballad writing.)
Am here
