Well, I did read her book "Loving John" and although it's been years since I've read it, May Pang does give a very different view of John's personality. John did seem to put out a persona whenever he was in public. May's account seems valid in this regard.
Given all this time and with Jullian and Sean all grown up, Yoko's persona seems all the more developed too. We know so little about her true self as opposed to John's boys.
John'a relationship with Yoko and May Pang is a great example of the repetition compulsion. He repeated his relationship with his mother and aunt, obviously before his mother being killed. He used to go back and forth between his strict unaffectionate aunt and his fun loving mother. His mother had similarities in that she was artisitc like Yoko but loving and affectionate like May Pang. JOhn was obviously attracted to Yoko's talents and an avant garge artist but Yoko was also a strict and cold person like his Aunt Mimi. Obviosly there's more to this than I'm making but it's basically what happened.

John continued to see May Pang even after he went back to Yoko to father a child. John said to Pang that he wanted to write with Paul again and that Yoko wouldn't let him. There's an interview on UA-cam where Pang talks about this and she's crying on behalf of John who didn't have the courage to stank up to Yoko and do what he wanted to do.

Yoko exploited a weakness in John and caused him to doubt himself on a very deep level. This allowed her to manipulate and dominate him. He needed an anchor who could steer him because he never felt completely independent. I believe he was getting close to this with May Pang before Yoko intervened and asserted her control again. It was actually her weakness that John responded to. Her need for him and the need to control him or at least feeling and appearance that she did. John responded to this game of mutual need. It was of course toxic. Who knows what would have been if he had stayed away from Yoko. Makes no difference I guess. He made his own decisions for whatever reasons.
Interestingly, May mentions "Reminiscing " by Little River Band. Released in June 1978, the lost weekend ended in about January 1975. I didn't know that they were still an item during John's estrangement from the music industry. Very interesting indeed.
I wish he would have stayed with Cynthia and Julian. That’s where he belonged. I love May and so did Cynthia but he should have stayed with his wife who loved him unconditionally and who he loved desperately for many years. She died loving him. The way he did Cynthia at the end of their marriage is just disturbing and probably the most cruel John ever was.
I've heard that May Pang helped John get off the drugs and straightened him out a bit. Then Elton John was instrumental in getting John back with Yoko and John was back on the drugs. Not sure how true that is, but that's what I've heard or read somewhere.
Fuz Capp I also read that in Goldman's biography of John, which didn't pull any punches. I don't believe that John & Yoko's relationship was a very good one. According to many who knew John very well for years have said that John was very much in love/lust with Yoko in the beginning but she was more manipulative & rather cold most of the time. Goldman did say that his sources told him that it was Yoko who was the junkie at first & then got John on heroin. John really did get lost in the drugs & let Yoko take over his life. I believe that it was May Pang who did help John get off the heroin while they were in LA. However, John always had an appetite for drugs & alcohol - LA was a heavy drinking period in his life. I tend to think that May was good for him. He seemed to reclaim his soul with her...started writing again, tried to be on better terms with Julian & was just generally happier. I know that May has never really said anything bad re John but his former assistant said he was horrible to her after he went back to Yoko. He was a really messed up man who should have been in therapy for his inner demons. I have always believed that Yoko had an agenda from the get-go (which Julian also said in an interview), which was to first control John & second to gain control over his money & estate. What she did to poor Julian after John died was disgusting. Cynthia was a gentle soul who didn't deserve to be tossed aside for that witch. A man's character is shaped a good deal by his mother & you can tell by looking at Julian that Cyn did a great job. John had 3 women in his life & he chose to be with the bad one. May & Cyn were decent women but in the end he went back to Yoko. It makes you feel that for all his musical "genius", he wasn't a very nice guy deep down. Sad.

An Asian surrogate would disguise the identity of the birth mother. Yoko would have a stronger claim on John's loyalty and on his estate if she had a child. It's difficult to know if John knew or didn't know Yoko's plan and May Pang's role in it.

Actually, George Harrison said in an interview that Julian was gentler than John was. He said that John was like arrogant but Julian wasn’t.

IMO Yoko was the worst thing that ever happened to John. I doubt she ever even loved him. I wish he would have stayed with May. She was good for him.
