Athene is a controversial figure in the gaming world. People say he is a cult leader, he uses charity as a "charity shield." There have been many claims about Athene, but what does it mean? What is real and false?
In this video, Dr. K touches with the controversy and brings up the idea of narcissism.

I've been watching Dr. K for a little over a year, but I've never seen th is video. You are so good and patient and willing to listen and understand. it's incredible. I never doubted it, but this video was incredible. I've been watching Athene since 2007. I stopped watching him after 2012/2013 because life got busy. When I came back years later to search for him, he already had this tainted image of himself. This video is so important for me, not just because of Athene, but because so many things were explained. Like, I don't know if you do it actively, but you just made him repeat himself in the same way so many times, and it was so easy to put it back in his face and him having to deal with THAT reality of himself.
    Beautiful video, sir!
"I just live my life and accept things as they are"
    Also
"There is so much suffering in the world, I can't accept it, I have to do something about it"
Youa re iether the former OR the latter, but not both, Athene.
The subject around 1:24:20 shows how Athene doesn't udnerstand how science really works, but Dr K does. When you do an experiment, you're not gonna just throw assumptions over assumptions, you want to use as fewer things as possible so your risk of getting an error is small, and if you change something in the experiment, you wanna change very little and go with baby steps. Athene makes HUGE assumptions about what people would say or think and he makes these thought experiments in his head, assuming so many wrong things that others wouldn't actually think or say.

Athene has to be one of the most ineffective communicators I've ever listened to. He is unable to put himself in the other person's shoes and imagine how they understand him, so as a result he comes up with these convoluted sentences full of abstract concepts and big words that make sense to him but are difficult to grasp for others. Everybody can construct a sentence that makes sense to them but is hard to understand for other people. And you don't have to be saying anything profound to do that, you could be talking about what you had for dinner last night. The fact that Athene is constructing his sentences like that all the time is not a sign of high intelligence, it is a sign of his inability to accurately express thoughts and convey the message that he wants to convey to his conversational partner.

    • @elitedesolator
      @elitedesolator 5 років тому +127

I'm 30 minutes in, listening to this "conversation", and I 100% agree with you on his horrible communication. I think Dr. K pointed out something incredibly important about why he does it. He does it to serve himself. He speaks in order to be understood by the other person, as though he's giving orders. That's why it's not a conversation, which requires at least two active parties. He speaks in order for other people to think like him. He speaks in order to control the flow of conversation, and even control the assumptions and thoughts that the other person makes.
To Athene, it might be that, even a straightforward ANSWER to a yes or no question would be surrendering control over to the other person. And he never EVER surrenders control.
Quite understandable given his background as a cult leader and a narcissist.

Q: Are you going to make your bed?
Athene: Well that depends, right now I am trying to better myself by understanding other's needs and processing information so that I can help them better.
Q: So you're not going to make the bed?
Athene: What would that accomplish? In this case would making the bed make me feel better or would it make you feel better or perhaps is there a bigger underlying issue here that by me making the bed or not would somehow have an impact on it?
Q: Can you please just answer the question?
Athene: I just want to make sure that the question you are asking has the same concept of my understanding of it so there is no misconception because it's important to me that we are on the same page.
Q: It's very plain and simple, I would like a yes or no answer, you either make the bed or you don't.
Athene: It's more complicated than that, we first have to understand your need of me making the bed or perhaps you don't want me to make the bed and there's more to this but there's no way for me to know what you really want as you just resort to it in simple binary terms.
Q: I assure you there's nothing more to it, just answer me please.
Athene: Ok but let me give you an example. Let's say you go ask somebody what time it is and they say it's 4 o'clock. That's not really an answer and it's not even right or wrong because in different parts of the world there are different times so the question has to be understood first in order for them to answer it in the specific way you want them to because time as a lot of things is very subjective.
Q: No more examples please, this isn't about perspective or individuality it's just a simple plain question.
Athene: Well then I will try to explain it how I see it from my point of view, it seems to me that you either want me to make the bed or not so let me ask you instead what do you think I should do and why?
Q: Do you see what you just did, you turned the question back to me!
Athene: Yes because in order for me to answer you I have to make sure that we understand each other because for example let's say I say yes I am going to make the bed then maybe I presume that you want me to make the bed simply on the way you asked the question or maybe you are even upset with me because I did not make the bed to begin with.
Q: PLAIN AND SIMPLE, ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE THE BED YES OR NO?
Athene: I think there is a bigger issue here and seeing how this upsets you makes me believe there are some other underlying issues that we need to discuss because I don't think that me making the bed or not would be sufficient at this point so in order for me to properly address this I think I need to dig deeper as the feeling I get from this is that your question is more complex and is more than a binary choice since the rules of me answering it are not defined or confined in your reality of me making the bed or not.

@@Wtb_skill Yeah you could say that. You could also point out the method in which athene decides to go about that desire to find common ground. Athene demonstrated his desire to test Dr. K from the start when asked why he's even here. You realize that's like a patient telling a psychiatrist "i'm here because I want to see if you're actually sincere about what you do or are you here to cause harm?". Please tell me you see what's strange about that happening. Athene in a passive agrressive (incredibly subtle) way came in here with the intent to scrutenize Dr. K's intentions for wanting to understand others. He caught on pretty quickly. What kind of person actually goes out of their way to test your competence on the very first encounter? Someone who has something to prove. Whether it be to himself or the viewers who knows. You could argue maybe Athene is just that good of a person and is a saint, but that's too much for anyone without a big sense of importance or responsability. So the following question would be, who does Athene think he is coming on here in an attempt to test his sincerity. Someone who is a good person that genuinely cares about others doesn't go out of their way to test every person they see claiming to be good. In other words, his sense of importance and place in the internet as a symbol of justice (lmao he played a paladin) felt threatened. So here he is.

He doesn't help you understand him neither. If not for comments from Doc. K during this conversation, I would probably assume that he was faking, trying to hide something etc.

It's fascinating how much, as an intelligent person, you can really live inside the abstractions your mind creates to the point where it is your whole world. I tend to be very in-my-head, but this chap is on a whole other level.
His whole goal for the conversation is about determining whether they can collaborate, but any logical, practical egoless person would turn that question into: "Are there any projects that would make a big difference to whatever cause that would be uniquely more likely to succeed as a result of the particular skills/experience/resources each of us bring to the table vs us both doing our own things separately".
Instead the whole conversation is about maintaining and extending this abstract framework which paints him in a particular way, and determining what the other persons place is in that framework and thus whether they are deserving of the opportunity to collaborate with him because they too have a "wide enough reality" and have forsaken all earthly desires.
It's lovely to see that the end result was something that has had a positive effect on the world though, and I hope that as he ages it continues to work for him.

@@twisteru8640 sure its not a literal quotation, it's a strawman even. But what hes saying is that he wouldnt be working so hard to help people if he was a narcissist because then he would think of himself as better than them. I think no matter what he said your bias would have found a way to mock/discredit him. The scope of what he has done to help people is quite insane. I've met quite a few narcissists in my life. They don't give a shit about others. You're picking at straws comparing him to them.

I’m going to be impressed if he doesn’t die alone, still, I know that this isn’t an argument, but his ego is so huge but still can’t accept it. Especially, when he judges people for having an ego. I don’t think he’s narcissistic, but there is still the possibility where he helps other people to feed his own ego about himself and discredit other people as a consequence, which can be done by a narcissist.

Here are my thoughts on why this conversation is confusing to so many people and why I think it's interesting.
Athene wasn't going into this asking for a therapy session; he was treating it like he was interviewing Dr. K for a job (31:20). Meanwhile Dr. K tries to do what he does best and tries to psychoanalyze Athene, which isn't what he was expecting. Neither seemed to have watched each others content before, so it starts with a large gap in both expectations and how each other likes to explain/learn (there's also a bit of a language barrier). Both ask questions that look like thinly veiled attacks on each other, but by the end, it seems like they are just genuinely curious about each other.
There is confusion on how they define words. For example, Dr. K asks if Athene is claiming superiority over others based on him comparing his actions and world view with others, despite claiming to say people are equal (46:45). If Dr. K is defining equality as no person being better than the other, then yes, Athene claiming he helps more people sounds contradictory. But it seems like Athene meant "people are equal" in the sense that they should be valued equally, as a motivation for him to help people who are underprivileged. This confusion seems to happen again for other words like "ego" and "suppression" because they both have clear definitions in mind that aren't immediately clear to each other.
There is confusion on how they should explain problems. For example, when Dr. K says that Athene has an "ego of no ego" (1:28:25). In (1:22:49), Dr. K defines *not* having an "ego of no ego" as 1) ask why the accuser thinks they are a narcissist, 2) ask where that perspective comes from, and that responding with evidence of him not being a narcissist means that he probably is (1:24:01). This seems to contradict what he was telling Athene to not do, saying it's bad to ask questions in return rather than answering the question (17:04). Dr. K says asking where the question is coming from and why they believe that helps him understand, which is what Athene appears to do in this talk a lot, but so prematurely to the point where it looks like deflection and side tangents. Both want to get to a root understanding, but are rarely approaching that root from a common angle and sort of insist on showing each other their path there.
Athene throughout the conversation makes too many analogies, comparisons, and abstractions (which to most viewers just looks really wishy washy (34:42)), which clearly fits into Dr. K's framework of suppression and presence of ego (1:34:09). This is pretty much how Athene likes to talk, maybe perhaps because he lacks english vocabulary to directly explain his thoughts, or because that's just what he sees as most effective. We can kind of see him making the effort to adapt during the conversation to not do that for Dr. K (48:16). It's really interesting to me to see what look like two people, who I feel like I understand, have rigid frameworks of how they approach conversation and problem solving, and to see what happens when those frameworks clash. Eventually, they seem to understand each other better, but I would love to see more conversations where they no longer have to worry as much about hurting each others feelings with pointed questions.
