- British Rail Class 555 METRO is new multiple unit designed to service on the Tyne&Wear Metro. It will replace current fleet of Tyne&Wear Metrocar from 1980. This is expected to happen in July 2023. There are currently 46 five-car units in production by Stadler Rail.
Train is fitted with pantograph at centre car that draws power from the 1500V DC overhead lines. In addition, it is equipped with a regenerative braking system with battery energy storage, so that it will be able to reach the nearest station even if the overhead lines fail.
In terms of capacity, train will be able to acommodate 600 people, with 104 seats. It is also equipped with specially designed steps at the doors, which can bridge the gap between train and the platform.

I'm looking forward to riding these new units in my local area here in Tyne & Wear. Very good video of the class 555 units.
Funny to see me driving the train😊
Beautiful trains, and such a perfect setting!
Superbe vidéo de ce 555 👍🤩🤩🤩📽️
Update April 2024, they still aren't in operation for Tyne and wear metro due to numerous issues, no date as of yet when entering service. Three units are sat at south Gosforth depot collecting dust and getting old.
*_Great video. Thanks for sharing..._*
I saw this being pulled by a class 66 at Ashford but didn’t press the record button but I thought I did lol
looks great
Let's see what these will be like
2:16 sounds like it's got a flat tyre
Yotam Amit1 2030❤😊
Oh, that's a very strange-looking unit. It's like they modified the cab of a Class 777 and put it on the frame of the old Class 994.
Are the new Tyne and wear metro train models released in 2023 or 2024
is it running battery mode In dome parts? Didn't see the pantograph
It certainly looks like it is.
@@jonathanj8303 Yeah it was running on batteries and the pantograph was lowered
Well spotted!
How similar are these units to Merseyrail’s new class 777 units
Will that be one train or will they be coupling two together, looks longer than the current ones
It's slightly longer than original fleet and 2 original fleet cars is one of the new ones and will only travel as one unit
They sound ridiculously quiet lool
