- I needed to change the color of the carpet for a few months till the construction is done on the house and did not want to spend a lot.
this worked better then i thought!
this only blead for a few days now everything is good
A sub just told me to use RiT dye colorstay 8fl oz
(4/7/22) to help with high traffic area!
For some reason UA-cam cut part of this video section and left the audio.
The part missing that you will hear is me mixing in the rit and the salt.
And using the sprayer to apply rit to carpet.

This is a great idea. I eventually want to refloor my entire condo with wood paneling, but that's obviously very expensive and so it's gonna be a few years down the line before I can afford such a project. In the meantime, dyeing the existing stained eyesore of a carpet sounds fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
It worked great for me
One section of hardwood floor was just done
Next will be the floor that is in the video

did this on my 99 nissan, floors look brand new and saved me 100$ on a new rug
Im about to do this in my 97 nissan maxima, how long was your dry time
@adityadharni5027 depends how wet u make the carpet
Leave the windows open
1-3days
I’m trying to do this to my interior at least the uppers part not the dash just like the roof about how much did you use and did you do salt
@@Leosolis-xt6jk figure out what material makes up your headliner, depending on that use salt or not , rit dye has instructions on salt on their website
I just saw this video and did this on a set of stairs to a basement with very old green carpet (not very shag) and it too one coat and looks amazing. Tip: Rug machine carpet before hand so the carpet is wet. Seems to set up well when carpet was wet. Great Video!
Glade it worked for you!
@Shannon Emerson was your carpet hard or crunchy after dying it?
@@rae08 It dried like normal carpet and it was not any different from orginal not cruchy or anything. You couldnt even tell it was a different color before. The color looked so natural and it looked original. Also the carpet on the stairs were so dirty and never cleaned in years so I rug machined them first then dyed them right away and it worked awesome. Everyone was amazed how great it turned out.
What does rug machine a carpet mean? You mean like deep clean it?
@@Faithdced oh i meant a carpet cleaner. Mine is hoover with the spinning brush heads very highly recommend it worked great because then the carpet was damp when i sprayed the dye onto it with a spray bottle. But the carpet on the stairs i did were prolly not cleaned in years so i cleaned the dirt and grime off them. This project turned out awesome. I was so impressed.
Salt softens the water 💦 great job !!
instaBlaster
wow it looks wonderful, I'm definitly doing this because our house is really high traffic and the black will conceal all of the soda spills and other gunk that gets all over the carpet over time.
This is a GREAT VIDEO!! Thank you. I now have the courage to ruin my carpet 😂. Just kidding. Thank you for this video. I have horrible beige carpet. I thought there was more to it. I'm a subscriber now & look forward to any future videos you create in the future
mine is beige too...i want it black😂
Awesome. I'm doing my carpet tomorrow. Thanks!
Can I see yours?
It came out amazing great job. Good informative videos.
Mr. Clean eraser would probably be the best to clean with the trim🥰
Will be using this as reference. Also, you sound a lot like Joe Pesci.
Omg I have been getting that a lot!
So cool!
Yo I love that guy…
This man sounds like he's about to break into my house at Christmas! 😉
Haha 😂
@@DavidsHowtosReviews seriously man, thanks for the helpful video. There's a carpet section on an old leather panel on the inside of my old Kenworth w900, smaller area for sure but I will be using this knowledge to turn faded orange back into a deep maroon red!!!
Let me know how it works! 👍
You can buy that size at any supermarket....carpet looks terrific...thinking of doing it to mine.
Yes I found in shoprite
Walmart
Target
I like the color great job 👏. Psyche
Have you used a carpet cleaner on it? Does it fade or wash out? Does it turn your jeans shoes or socks black from dye rub off? I noticed the toddlers keaster was a little grey and wet after sitting on it, but I assume it was not dry.
Her feet were black too lol. RIT is messy and it bleeds theres no way there's no bleeding after 4 coats. Did he vacuum the excess out? I need more detail to be a believer. Thanks to him for the video tho. It did spark my imagination
I'm wondering if will come off the carpet easily, probably depends on type of fiber. WOOL should be great.
Thanks this was short to the point and filled with with great pounts and knowledge you broke it down and made me feel I can do this how long does it take the rit to dry
If you can run fans about 3days figure
Maybe faster may take longer
Depends on what the temperature in the house
If you split on wall or furniture overnight, you can also use alcohol to remove.
Great information, thank you for sharing!
I can’t help myself but is Joe pesci ova here really gonna teach me how to dye carpet😂 jokes aside I might actually try this
Good video with good information. I was thinking of bleaching the filthy carpet left behind by previous tenants. It's a tan carpet with very dark, almost black paths around beds, couches, hallways etc. What do you think about that concept prior to dying the carpet?
Some viewers have done it with great results
I would say rent a carpet cleaner
Clean and then while still wet just apply dye
Tip: bleach carpet before hand for more vibrant results
I wanted to try that but how do I do it safely? Do I put bleach in a spray bottle then vacuum with my carpet clearner vacuum or regular vacuum?
@@JoJo-vi6xx well I accidentally bleached my carpet with Clorox spray running down my walls lol. And then I did a rug dr over it before putting the dye on
You can try putting in the carpet cleaner
You can get a very cheap one on Amazon.
I clean the carpet every three months with the dye in it.
Should work the same with bleach.
@@DavidsHowtosReviews I heard you can use vinegar, what will happen if you use vinegar and salt and what type of salt?
I just used regular cheap table salt
I’d love to see you Red finish that tub and tile in white with a Home Depot kit!
That bathroom got gutted a few days after that video.
It’s all new everything…. Lol
Nice! Thanks for sharing. Your video came across and I’m planning to color my red carpet. You think that color will works on red? Ty
I think so we had a bright green
Took two coats
Just take your time and do a test area like in the closet
Iwould have liked to see you use the sprayer.
I do on my 1 year touch up video
Love it! Thank you so much!
How long did it take you to spray that first raised area carpet? I'm trying to do this with my living room / dining room and i had a spray bottle (32 oz) i tried using - i got a 1 ft by 4 ft area of carpet done in about 20 min and got discouraged but i think you have inspired me to get a sprayer and try again
With a small sprayer 1/2-1gal it's quick
Just make sure you cover your trim
It will stain it and take more time to clean
Really soak it and run the beater brush over it to make it even
Great Video..I'm ready to go get it done ✔
Do a test spot before u apply to whole carpet
Get the color right
Great explanation!
How do you wash the carpet after to get access dye out. You need to rinse it after from what i recall back in the day. So how woukd you wash that out. 🤔
I just used fans to dry it out and that’s it
When I use carpet wash I throw some dye in it
Yes, Looks great. However, what happens when you wear white and want to roll around the carpet with your toddler?
After it completely dries it’s fine
But if it’s still damp it happens a little bit
After a week it’s fine we did not have a problem
But I would stay away from white if possible for a while.
I am confused because in your video you said you was using half a bottle of black and half a bottle of grey, but later in your chat replies you said a bottle of black and half grey....... also you said it took you 4 bottles of Rit, is that 4 bottles of Rit black and 4 bottles of Rit grey?......... I do not understand so i would appreciate if you could explain in more detail the actual amount of bottles you purchased for each colour because your carpet looks great!! It's exactly what i want in my hallway. Thank you for your video David it's very interesting indeed, good job fella.
Carpet I just bought don’t look dark enough .. for what I wanted. Thinking about doing this
Can you complain have the company swap it out there should be a 100% satisfaction
Empire does
Try that first
I know this is a 3 year old video so Im not sure if you're even replying to comments at this point lol but I gotta ask anyways... Can this method be used on shag carpet?
Not sure
I know a lot of viewers and subscribers have said they tried all types of stuff and it seems to work with just about anything
They tried it on Home carpets
Automotive carpets
Marine boat carpets
Seems to work on different types of carpets like wool ,Synthetic send me synthetic, etc
Try a little spot fist
@@DavidsHowtosReviews thanks 👍
How much salt did you use and how much dye did you use in ratio to the salt? (E.g 5 spoons salt 5 spoons dye)
I did 1bottle black 1bottle of gray
Salt about 1/3cup
In 1gal
I have dyed stuff in the past, and don't you have to rinse the dye out? I mean your daughter just sat on the carpet with white pj's and got back up. Her bottom had black dye on it. Did you rinse?
You can let It set and then run carpet cleaner over it
But we just threw down old towels and just waited a week
Then it was fine
It will bleed a little bit use old socks
We had them wear old clothing.
It’s Ben holding up very well
Defo doing mine now
Do a test spot first so you can get the color right
And give the drying time a while
It all depends on how dry ur home is and use fans if possible to speed up drying time.
So I did my cars carpet but All I used was just the rit dye in a spray bottle. And it bleeds alot but I have to wash the carpet but should I wash the carpet and vacuum all the bleeding dye off let it dry and then do it this way with the water and salt? I want my carpet to be jet black which is the color I have
Sometimes it takes some time but is should stop u can do two or three coats and it will get darker.
I believe that auto carpets are a full synthetic (plastic) and it may be the difference, but give it a little time hope it works for you
How many rounds of the 2 gallon dye mix did this take?
I made two passes for this the color was a light green and a dark green with a strange pattern 70’s style lol
Then I did a touch up 1yr later.
Most of the carpet has been changing to hardwood
I actually did this as a temporary thing but since it worked well and my kids kept spilling stuff on it I left it till this year
Great_ Id_ will like 2 How 🤔 many days -do its take 2 dry?
Use a fan to speed up drying
3-5days
Some viewers are saying longer some are saying shorter
Some wash it first
Some have bleached it , I don’t suggest it because of the fumes
I’m wanting to do this to my stairs. I just moved and all the walls are gray but the carpet is brown. I wanted to dye the carpet gray or gray brown. Not sure yet. Thanks for this video!
Definitely do a test spot to see what ratio u need to mix colors to get the correct one.
U may need to run a carpet cleaner with Clorox cleanup in it to lighten the brown a little.
Good luck
Be patient and let it dry
Run some fans to speed up drying time
What happens if you later use a carpet cleaner with folex?
I don't even know what that is
Does the previous pattern stay and change colour or does it get covered hard to see from video.
Dyes everything you can’t see the pattern in mine anymore
@@DavidsHowtosReviews what's the coverage area per bottle sq metres? Email the company they don't know
So you spray it down and scrub it in with a sponge and let dry? That’s it?
I found that a vacuum with no suction and only beater brush works the best
I took off my filter to keep it from having suction.
The beater brush tends to spread out the die more even
Then just let it dry
Second Time around, I used fans to blow on the carpet to dry it out faster, and then threw some old towels down
I have an ugly red carpet that came with the house . Do you think that black and gray would remove the red ? . I'm looking to change the red into a black carpet
Yes I think it will work this carpet was dark green
@@DavidsHowtosReviews I think the dark green would be much easier to turn black than a red. I'll give it a try thanks
The second time (touch up) made it much darker
(My update video)
I've got an off white/beige carpet that I'm colouring black
Mix black 3/4 to 1/4 silver
Straight black will give tint of blue
Spray a test spot till you get the color right
Just play with the ratio
I switched to the powder dye
Much cheaper
What happens if you accidently spill somethin on it and after you clean it up... would the dye come off as well?
No
My kids spill everything on it
We just use carpet cleaner and done
The hardest part is giving it time to dry like paint
I told one viewer to use a fan to dry the carpet.
It seems to last in high traffic area for little Over a year
Then I respray those areas
Can you stil wash the carpets afterwards?
Yes
Hey question I'm gonna do this to my daughters room do you by chance know if when you go to shampoo it in the future if the color will come up
I recently did a carpet cleaning
I just added a little black to the water and nothing happened.
The color remand the same.
Just know it does take like 5 days to stop bleeding.
So put down cardboard or some towels you don’t care about.
We walked on it with black socks then after a week everything was fine.
To take dye, the carpet must be wool or nylon only, right?
Yes from what the directions say.
Try a test spot In a area u can’t see
Rit dye more , will dye synthetics.
Beautiful 🙏🏼
Can you shampoo these carpets with out stripping the paint?
You can shampoo it and the dye will not come out, if it does it’s just a little bit
Can i shampoo after it drys to make sure dye isnt being picked up by baby?
Yes
It will take a few days to dry
Some viewers are saying they used fans to dry it faster
U can put old towels down also
How long did u wait in between coats
Apply
If possible use vacuum with just brush running
Wait a few hours or day to do another
The a yr to touch up if needed
Wonder if you used a carpet cleaner to apply....would it work? Use spray option.
No I tried it
It will work a little but you will use a lot more color and waste money
When cleaning carpet throw die in to help keep color
Frickkk. I need brown and need to do this by tonight but always have yellow. And blue, and coral??? 😔😔
It takes a week-ish to dry
I would not rush it or u will have dye on people’s socks or clothing.
Use fans aimed at floor to dry faster
Did u have to wash the carpet after u let the dye sit
I did not
I just let it dry when I did it it was nice out no humidity
I had the windows open and ceiling fans on.
Some viewers used floor fans to dry it
Some viewers posted that they washed the carpet first.
Do you rinse with water after your done dying? I know that's what you do when dying clothes
I did not But some viewers said they did
I’ve only dyed this carpet
But viewers said they have done other colors and it came out good
What about a paint spray gun that would be fine won’t it ..?
Just be careful of the fine mist from it you want more of a stream paint guns use a very fine mist
I thought your supposed to boil water to mix the Rit in? Never seen anybody just use hot water out of the faucet/tub. Doesn't it say on the bottle to boil hot water to mix the RIT?
My mom that used it for yrs and was like just hot water and salt will work and it did
Did you have to get 4 bottles of black and grey?
I do a few black to one gray
The gray help from the black having a purple tint
Each color carpet with have a different ratio
Definitely mix it up and do a test spray and adjust as needed
Hi, will this work for area rug .light blue rug into dark blue?
This works on wool you can always ck on box to see if your rug type is covered
I think you will need to have to bleach it a little first
This way the color of the rug is very light.
hey big boss, i tried black on my tan carpet, its been 11 days, it has some dry areas but still moist, even in the dry areas when i touch the carpet my hands get dye all over, i think my carpet is ruined , do you think the dye will settle in by a couple of months?
It should not take that long
I just re-dyed the one section
I had a small fan blowing on the carpet for a little while
It’s fine now.
Maybe try a fan?
Should not take months
@@DavidsHowtosReviews i have the ceiling fan on high,..its been 13 days , im thinking couple more days

Did you wash it out of the carpet after or just let it stay ?
Just let it stay
I wish you would have shown you spraying it
I have a updated video or second coat 1year later spraying it on
How does the carpet look now? Did it hold?
Yup still fine only touched it up once last year
Dose it bleed I'm scared if I try this and sit on the floor I'm going to get up with a stained a$$ or something
It will “bleed” only for a little bit.
It was about 4days then after that vacuuming, it was fine
After a few weeks nothing at all u can do a dog butt drag on it and nothing will come off 😂
What if kids spill water?? Will it bleed?
No
It doesn’t bleed
Do you have a video showing how you sprayed it on the carpet
No but I will make one soon I will be touching up a section and the one closet that I did not dye yet
So you just leave it on? You don’t wash it off at all?
No just leave on
We found you do need to put rags down for a little bit till it really sets good.
About 3days or just walk with shoes on
@@DavidsHowtosReviews thank you!
Can you show how you apply and how long does it take to dry?
It’s very easy
If you can get a cheap lawn sprayer that works best, just pour in the water, rit, salt and spray.
You can use a large sponge 🧽 u can get a 2 pack from Home Depot.
And that’s it.. easy
So how much salt per gallon of mixture?
About 1/2 cup
Or less
Will you ever be able to shampoo ?
Yes I do it all the time
Just add a little bit of dye in the water
What are the water and the rit paint ratio?
I used 1gal water to 1/2 black and 1/2 gray small bottle
You can use the dry pack also if u find them cheaper
You may need to adjust a bit if it’s not dark enough to cover the color
@@DavidsHowtosReviews thank you.
Thank you
😁👌🏽
How many small bottles did you use per room?
It really depends on the size of the room
But I used 5 bottles for about 500sf
So not really as much as I figured it would take
But is depends on the type of carpet also if it’s a light color or a dark color wool or other type of material
howlong does it take to dry
Depends on how humid it is if u can air out the house
Some viewers use fans to dry it faster
Figure 3days to one week
Faster if u can use fans and dehumidifier
Put old towels down
I just told someone the same thing
Did you wet your carpet before you dyed it?
No, I just vacuumed it very well.
I have heard some people lightly use a carpet cleaner.
Just keep in mine you will want to put down old towels for a little while.
Would this work for carpet in cars
I don’t seen why not it tends to be the same material, I would say test it in a location that is not seen
How is it holding up? I want to try this on mine!
It’s good I can’t complain.

Hi David! I just bought an 8x10 and a 5x7 rug at an estate sale. Of course they're well used and the big one has a few stains(the carpet is white with blue designs on border) we're doing our sons room to look like the inside of a medieval castle with decals on the walls that look like a hole and dragons looking in, wall sconces with battery candles etc. However I can't find the type of rug I want for him(hardwood floors through the house) and was concerned about ruining the wood floors. SO I was trying to figure out how to color and stencil a rug. All other vlogs with Rit say u have to rinse and wash after AND scrub it in with a hard brush. Yours is still good? And no "crunchiness" or bleeding after a week? I will definitely be doing this. I wonder if Rit has a glow in the dark dye. Stencils would look AWESOME(My son is 11 btw)
OH and do you have vids up to your stopping point(when supplies went sky high! We understand! Have a little lawn and maintenance company and supplies became more cost than the labor!!!)
Thanks so much!

Well the room that the white carpet I had a cat that throws up some times and sometimes messes up the carpet but it's still isn't ready to change yet but there's some color problems. My question is if I dye it like if she throws up on the carpet a pet mistake can I use carpet foam still pull out the pet mess and still keep the carpet dye color from not leaveing with the clean up? Like or would I have we dye that spot area again after carpet foaming from a pet mess?
