@@RabbiSteve1 Yep, also a cat is one of the first things you see in all adaptations of Nosferatu. What does Orlok control?Rats. What is a rat`s natural predator? Cats.
I like that this version of "Dracula" is him just as an evil being. Most vampire stories give you a small strand of understanding, or rooting for them/enjoying some element of them. In this, they really lean in to he is a predator and "an appetite...nothing more" as he says. Not sexy, not charismatic...just evil. It is an interesting change to the norm with it.
Really interesting point. There was a lot of revelry in Gary Oldman’s version in the 90s, where we spend time with his perspective and “enjoy” being evil. Changes the fear we have of the character when every time he shows up it’s a terrifying bloodbath.
Because while Dracula is archetypal of the formerly human romantic, oppulent vampire--Orlak is the archetypal folk vampire who is not an undead man cursed to live forever but rather, a reanimated corpse hosting a purely demonic presence. Orlak is more like Pinhead from Hellraiser than he is to anything like Dracula or even the vampire Lestat. Dracula & Lestat still have some sense of material, human desires (love, chosen family/community, hobbies, art). Orlak, like Pinhead or Jason Vorhees is purely driven by a strict agenda to bring death to the nearest living person in whatever means necessary. With Dracula, it can be very personal for those he spares. With Orlak, who he kills is very much impersonal and those he spares are just a means to an end.

I liked that they kept the rule of vampires needing an invitation. She had to give herself by her own will. The old folklore was that blasphemers, heretics and apostates have opened themselves to demon possession after death, an open invite to demons and rising up as one of the undead, which then led to a lot of corpses in graves being dug up and decapitated. In Coppola's '92 film, you see Dracula blaspheming and rejecting his faith when his wife dies, so that follows the theme. Not like the modern films where it's often treated like a blood infection, where one little vampire bite will turn you, like in the zombie movies.
The language Orlok speaks is Dacian a dialect that no longer exists used during the Daica period which is now Romania. Nosferatu Picks Up 4 Oscar Nominations This Morning: Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, & Make Up Hair. Congrats to The Team on their Deserved Nominations. I'm Sorry I Wasn't An Awards Voter. BUT LFG ON THE FOUR!!!!
Saw this in theaters with my dad. We were sucked in immediately. The atmosphere of the whole movie is perfection and gave both of us Sleepy Hollow but there was no fun to be had. No quirkiness in the vicinity whatsoever. Everyone's acting was superb and i think all roles were cast perfectly. Honestly wasn't sure about Lily-Rose Depp due to the atrocity of Idol which I only caught a few snippets of and QUICKLY got away. She seriously acted her ass off. Bill Skarsgard completely transformed. That voice. Fucking chills. Can't wait to see what you two think of it!
Hell yes! It's like Sleepy Hollow but even darker and it was absolutely phenomenal. I don't enjoy horror in theaters much but I did with this! It is truly a marvel. I'm sad I only saw it twice.
RE: Orlock’s first scene- You guys are watching this in a brightly lit room, most likely on a TV screen or computer screen, perfect for looking at relfections. Frankly I’m surprised you were able to see as much as you do. Anyway, kill some lights. With a movie like this, it’s more necessary than UA-cam’s viewing pleasure.
I visibly cringed when I saw that. I figured from the trailer that they would have pulled a reaction cut from the actual kill. But... nope. And it was glorious.
When I saw the movie in theaters and saw him holding the pigeon, I said, "Don't do it. Don't you fucking do it!" As soon as he bit the pigeon's head off, I just 😐😑 and said "I knew it" lol
The final scene mixed with amazing music is one of the greatest horror scenes I ever seen. The whole movie is brilliant. Well done Robert Eggers! You did it again!
We’ve all been so infatuated with a new relationship that we stay up all night hanging out and talking and forget when the sun comes up. In Orlok’s case this became a bit more detrimental, but hey better to have loved and have lost you know.
aw Lucky! the theater I went to was packed and was in an isle full of teens giggling/laughing whenever unsettling/scary happened. Totally ruined the immersion.
@@yourbasicninjayeah same with me some teens in my cinema were laughing whenever Ellen was moaning as they didn’t take it seriously. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying the movie though

@@rachaelhogan7850 The look was done on purpose. Eggers and his team researched what men like him looked like back in his time, and they looked like that - moustache and heavy clothing. It's accurate for the time. You're just too used to campy Hollywood movies were vamps are romanticised.
I grew up watching Nicholas holt in skins so to see how much he’s grown as an actor is crazy even though he was amazing in skins also lol , he kills every role and is such an understated actor ❤
Have you seen him in The Great? I loved him in that, and Fury Road. He's amazing in everything he's in! I didn't even know he was in Skin?! Thanks for the info!
1:17:47 This shot was a gut punch seeing Thomas desperately run to Ellen with the rising sun and the score, knowing, as an audience member, that he wouldn't make it in time.
Squidward: _"Wait, if that was you on the phone and you on the bus, then who was flickering the lights?"_ *(cus Count Orlok flickering the light switch)*
Fun fact: Nosferatu is the first vampire movie ever made it was filmed in 1922 and the film itself was German Romanian it wasn’t any typical vampire movie like the others this was the OG of the remake 🇩🇪🦇🩸
The original Nosferatu is not the first vampire film, nor is it the first adaption of Dracula. It is, however, the earliest that is known to exist completely.
This for sure. I couldn't believe That was bill as the vampire there, not by the look /voice. He's amazing at villain /monster roles. Lilly as Ellen was astounding ,as if She's not acting at all throughout this. And dibs to that pigeon guy.😅 seriously he did a good job to make us both terrify & disgust at the same time. The entire cast did their jobs beyond perfect.👏
Eggers is 4 for 4. All of his movies are masterpieces. Beyond excited for his next movie Werwulf, can't wait to see what he does with a werewolf story.
100% his practical effect work and use of scenery for his horror/suspense will lead itself to an awesome werewolf movie. I expect terrifying scenes of the creature stalking just outside of the fire light as the human characters cower in fear!
@@fullMetaLxMantis and this movie should've been in German imho. Maybe he should "follow" Crazy Mel Gibson in native language department? Just imagine Apocalypto in English.
6:18 When I tell you that part TERRIFIED me at the cinema, I mean it. This was my first horror movie on the big screen, and I went in expecting a pretty slow first half. I swear I didn't sleep that night lol
I’ve heard some out there insisting Depp’s performance wasn’t good or “believable.” As someone with some acting and production experience, I can say I do NOT KNOW what the heck they’re talking about. In fact, everyone was pretty much spectacular from Depp to Hoult to Taylor-Johnson. All the way around even the thankless roles were filled out. John mentions that referring to ATJ and he’s so right. A lesser actor wouldn’t take that part because it’s not sexy or spotlighted enough. But to make it believable and you really feel for his family crumbling and his lack of understanding of the situation he’s in… standing ovation to all involved. Deserving of its nominations.
@@Trip4maneven an English speaker can puzzle out some meeting from Latin, not much but some. I imagine a native speaker of a Romance language would be able to take it a little farther
When I watched this for the first time, I immediately thought Orlak looked like a rotting Czar Nicholas II. I appreciate the subtle ode to Carmilla in this film. Carmilla predates Dracula by 30 decades but has rarely been talked about, let alone had films done about the novel. She bites through the heart instead of the neck. I know Orlak did both, but still. Whether it was intentional or not, it is what I immediately thought of when I saw the movie. I also appreciate the inclusion of Romani and Slavic culture.
Personally the most disturbing part in theaters was Orlok feeding. You had that insane sucking noise fill the theater and it's so damn loud. I think the visuals are very effective but the sound design elevates a lot. Also every jump scare kinda got me because they were just kind of constant. I was too scared to notice anyone else but people did have nervous laughter. Someone burst out laughing at the end and that seemed like an appropriate response to how insanely horrifying the final shots are.
I love how the actor who plays the doctor is in a lot more films now. His so damn under rated English actor. Eggars had him playing the father in the witch. His usually a villian but great seeing him as a good guy
I always just think of him as Chris Finch from the original version of The Office! He plays the Todd Packer counterpart. It’s always nice to see him in a movie. His voice is amazing!
Well the lack of language barrier isn't that bad of a thing because Transylvania at the time was part of the Austrian empire. We are shown two different ethnicities living in the region in the movie, the Romanians speaking Romanian (the praying old lady, the nuns and priests) and the Roma people (the guys that were dancing and singing when Thomas arrived in the village) speaking their language, but it would be quite likely that some people were speaking some German too, and since the main character is from Germany, it's okay that he can communicate with some people there. I think in the original story of Dracula it makes less sense that the main character who is English can speak with the locals and the count, I don't remember it being explained in the book, but maybe I forgot.
Saw this Christmas morning in a surprising packed showing &’ I fucking LOVED IT😭 the cinematography is just😮💨 the scene when the carriage arrives for him😭

This was a fantastic film. If you haven't watched Eggers' other films, run don't walk to see them. The Northman is one of my favorite films of all time. He creates masterpieces. I can't wait to see what he does with his career!
I just watched Nosferatu in theaters two days ago. The movie was really good. It just got nominated for 4 Oscars, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Excited to watch the Nosferatu reaction with Roxy and John.
Can you possibly change your thumbnail? You’re kinda ruining the surprise and suspense for new viewers. I remember how I felt when I saw it in the theater, don’t rob people of that!
Kinda shitty to use his pic in the thumbnail. Haven't seen the movie yet and this pops up in my feed, thanks. And, no I havent watched this video just popped in to vent my frustration.
The movie has been out for a while and is being widely talked about on the Internet. If you don't want it to be spoiled you should avoid the interent until you see it. You'd think people would know this by now...
I loved this movie so much. The aesthetics and most acting was breathtaking, like I literally held my breath from Hoult's harrowing performance of terror.
can't blame them. They've been conditioned with hollywood slop like Marvel movies and the new star wars trilogy. Imagine making them watch a Tarkovsky film? lmao even when they're watching a Marvel movie they need to check their phone every five minutes because they have zero attention span.
I'm sorry but this movie was a masterpiece in my opinion. The ending left me with so many questions and I haven't stopped thinking about thus film since
I went to see this 3 times, never had more than 8 people in the theatre. People were quiet, no huge reactions. first watch I did scoff quietly when they mentioned sleeping in and tightening her corset for the fits. For the visuals and sound design the in theatre watch was worth it. Looking forward to seeing this with full subtitles.
because this channel milks every cent they can cause they have no original content on their own. Retarded subhuman fans of this channel slop up every vomit they put out.
When I saw this opening night, it might have been the most silent viewing I have every been apart of. I think the reason is that everyone was just on edge like never before. After the movie, then people finally began to breathe
This movie was so crazy and I really enjoyed it. Every actor knocked it outta the park and the camera work and overall direction was just something awesome to behold. And I don’t watch alot of horror films
This movie is fantastic, it isn't so much scary, but it is eerie! It is a very very well done Vampire movie, and Bill Skarsgards voice work alone should set it as a classic for all time!
I went to the late screening for this film and it was packed! When it got so intense everyone was silent and had their full attention to the screen. One the best experience I’ve had!
I just love how all the promo material was specifically designed to not give away what he looks like, just for you guys to completely ruin it with the thumbnail. Thanks. Edit: unsurprising that in an age where empathy is essentially non-existant, the overwhelming majority of the replies have been "I've seen the movie, so it's not my problem." When they could've easily used any other pic for the thumbnail. No, I didn't go out my way to click on this video, YT felt the need to put it at the top of my feed just because I'm a subscriber. I guess I'll have to fix that.
It’s been out for a while now, if you haven’t seen it then every other thing on the internet would’ve spoiled it anyway. If you’re that concerned about spoilers like that then go and actually watch it instead of complaining about it
Great watch guys, I describe Nosferatu as like a beautiful dark dream. Weirdly I watched Wallace and Gromit Vengeance Most Foul almost immediately after finding both as excellent examples of the craftsmanship of filmmaking.
The sound design is so good you can hear how much blood Orlok gets every time he sups. He literally swallows a full gulp every time he takes a pull from their chest.
Can we appreciate how John’s horror references throughout the film are always so perfectly on point? 😂 The guy’s a walking encyclopedia for horror movie lines and I am so here for it!! ❤
Thanks for immediately spoiling how Nosferatu looks in this movie with your thumbnail. Did the same thing for long legs. Come on guys. So many reviews etc from other channels have been making sure not to spoil those things or at least give a heads up during the video. They don't spoil it in the frigging thumbnail.
@@zoephotoart I know UA-cam definitely tells accounts which thumbnail gets the most clicks, and I can guarantee you this one got more clicks. I’ve actually seen three images that they’ve used so far, two frames of orlock and one of ellen with blood from her eyes and mouth, so they probably cycled through and this is the one that got the most
Please, make sure to watch Eggers Lighthouse!! Is the ultimate example that actually 3:4 aspect ratio can work perfectly if actually the film requires to freak you out. An claustrophobic and mind-f&ck experience that you'll never look Willem Dafoe the same way.
For the theatre question, usually in Germany dont make noise in theatres to respect others and there were also not that many in the theatre for this movie sooo
My theater was in silence, like we were all in a trance of Nosferatu, just watching everything like it was so normal. It was so sick watching it in the theater, Orlok voice rumbled the fucking fuck out of our chairs.

He was but the story is a blatant rip of copy of Francis ford Coppolas Dracula with Gary OLDMAN which was way better and the ending was quick flat and anti climatic in this movie
To much like RASPUTIN the MAD MONK from RUSSIA especially with the hat he looks nothing like the original count orlok
All deserved bc the actual film was shite, but yes, the visuals and cinematography was STUNNING.
@@bluegypsy71 WHAATT
Lmao what?!? The film was absolutely fantastic
@@bluegypsy71 You are crazy.
So excited!!
I saw it with my dad too. This film is a masterpiece.
lily rose depp 🤣🤣 i had the same feeling towards her because of The Idol but she really redeemed herself in nosferatu FOR SURE!
Hell yes! It's like Sleepy Hollow but even darker and it was absolutely phenomenal. I don't enjoy horror in theaters much but I did with this! It is truly a marvel. I'm sad I only saw it twice.
I saw it alone- it’s fantastic
@@anthonys.8569 I saw it alone, too. The other people didn't react enough for me😂
RE: Orlock’s first scene- You guys are watching this in a brightly lit room, most likely on a TV screen or computer screen, perfect for looking at relfections. Frankly I’m surprised you were able to see as much as you do. Anyway, kill some lights. With a movie like this, it’s more necessary than UA-cam’s viewing pleasure.
Silence you fool!,Skelator voice
Actually such a good point, more reactors should think about this. Turn those lights off for horror movies, get in the atmosphere!
When Herr Knoch bit off the pigeons head I literally said out loud “JESUS CHRIST”😂😂people laughed it helped them break out of that moment for a min
I visibly cringed when I saw that. I figured from the trailer that they would have pulled a reaction cut from the actual kill. But... nope. And it was glorious.
Oh wow, so that was you? That was hilarious.
@@EzeICEdid you go to the AMC at Newport on the Levee in Newport, KY?😂😂cause if so yes that was me
When I saw the movie in theaters and saw him holding the pigeon, I said, "Don't do it.
At my advanced age, I’ve still never been in a relationship. So no, it’s not all of us.
Damn
Roxy having a complete nervous breakdown over the pigeon scene
John: Wow the lighting and framing is wonderful🤣
In my theater the audience reaction to the pigeon scene was a collective gasp of horror, shock, revulsion
I saw this film late at night in an empty theater. Watching this particular movie like that made for an exceptional experience.
Whoa.
aw Lucky! the theater I went to was packed and was in an isle full of teens giggling/laughing whenever unsettling/scary happened. Totally ruined the immersion.
My partner & I watched this in a nearly empty theater and were TERRIFIED. It really elevated the experience. Completely immersed.
@@yourbasicninjayeah same with me some teens in my cinema were laughing whenever Ellen was moaning as they didn’t take it seriously. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying the movie though
William picked the cat up. The poor cat watched the whole thing
He was content in his cvck chair.
Traumatised for each and every one of it's nine lives.
Bill Skarsgard is INCREDIBLE in this movie
I thought he was award worthy
Looks more like Rasputin the mad monk from Russia looks nothing like orlok
@@rachaelhogan7850 In the novel he is described as tall, thin, pale, with a high domed head and scant hair, pointed ears, a bushy monobrow over a thin bony bridge of a nose with arched nostrils, a strong chin, prominent boned but hollow cheeks, a cruel mouth framed by a heavy moustache, lustrous red lips and protruding sharp teeth.
@ yes! He’s sooo good in the great ! One of my faves
Hes also only aged like a month since skins

1:17:47 This shot was a gut punch seeing Thomas desperately run to Ellen with the rising sun and the score, knowing, as an audience member, that he wouldn't make it in time.
I felt nothing unlike being sad for Gary Oldman.
Squidward: _"Wait, if that was you on the phone and you on the bus, then who was flickering the lights?"_

I still can’t believe that a whole generation learned about him from SpongeBob
@@Wolfking99-x4r Providence
Fun fact: Nosferatu is the first vampire movie ever made it was filmed in 1922 and the film itself was German Romanian it wasn’t any typical vampire movie like the others this was the OG of the remake
🇩🇪🦇🩸
The original Nosferatu is not the first vampire film, nor is it the first adaption of Dracula. It is, however, the earliest that is known to exist completely.
Which version of NOSFERATU is your favorite??
Shadow of the Vampire (2000)! 💯🖤
2010 Wolfman coming soon?
This one!
The one where he's flicking the lights menacingly
27:07 - "Vlad the impatient" is great:-) ..."wheeere the f*****ck haaaave youuuu beeeeeeen?!" in Count Orloks voice.
The Northman and Nosferatu would be better imho if RE had courage to use native languages.
@votdfak he wanted The Northman to be in old norse but the studio wouldn't have it.
@@fullMetaLxMantis and this movie should've been in German imho. Maybe he should "follow" Crazy Mel Gibson in native language department? Just imagine Apocalypto in English.
@@votdfak Oof, bringing Apocaypto into the conversation of “authenticity” is wrong in so many levels.

I saw this same comment on Letterboxd lol
6:18
When I tell you that part TERRIFIED me at the cinema, I mean it. This was my first horror movie on the big screen, and I went in expecting a pretty slow first half. I swear I didn't sleep that night lol
I loved this movie and wish it could have been scarier, to be honest.
John’s crown-peaked bandana and his mustache makes him look like the portrait of Vlad the Impaler
Gothic horror masterpiece. Every department brought their A+ game and the cast was marvelous, especially the astounding performance by Bill Skarsgard.
I heard Romanian language has a lot of latin influence, and as a Chilean I was surprised at the words I managed to recognize in this movie.
It's in the same language group as Italian and French
What words?? lolol If someone spoke Latin to you you wouldn't understand a THING! Even if you speak a latin derivate language like Spanish
@@Trip4man And obviously, you're an authority on this subject--as we all know.
He looks like Rasputin the mad monk from Russia
Personally the most disturbing part in theaters was Orlok feeding. You had that insane sucking noise fill the theater and it's so damn loud. I think the visuals are very effective but the sound design elevates a lot. Also every jump scare kinda got me because they were just kind of constant.
I was too scared to notice anyone else but people did have nervous laughter. Someone burst out laughing at the end and that seemed like an appropriate response to how insanely horrifying the final shots are.
Bill Skarsgard is a National treasure
24:30 - Being “floated” into the carriage seems be an homage/callback to Keanu in Dracula, where the same effect occurred.
Love seeing Emma Corrin is so many different things. The Crown, Deadpool/Wolverine, Nosferatu. She’s so talented
Watching this film in theaters was awesome. It felt like the building was shaking when Orlok talks in the beginning. S-tier sound design
Best theater movie I've seen in a long time. D+W and Romulus i left mildly dissappinted. Nosferatu i left going, whoa holy shit.
I LIVE AND DIE FOR THESE LONG ASS WATCH THROUGHS THANK YOU
56:09 not many caught Orlok standing up against the wall. I remember in theaters seeing if anyone saw it and nothing. Crazy Lmaoo
28:27 Count Orlok: Speak not of Reel Rejects again😂😂😂
49:58 hahaha that little Dafoe clip was spot on! 🤣nice job @TeamPraper i guess? 😉

Love the Ghost quote, there is a distinct simularity between many of their lyrics and the themes in this movie
I caught that too, didn't know John was a fan of Ghost, or if it is a reference that Ghost borrowed from some other medium that I've never seen.
Oh I must have missed that! Where did he quote Ghost? Of course it makes sense that there's overlap, Tobias Forge and Robert Eggers are both huge nerds who love looking into occult history. Tobias likes to be more irreverent with it, but it comes from the same place of love

If he had courage to make The Northman in native tongue maybe then it would be a masterpiece.
I just watched Nosferatu in theaters two days ago. The movie was really good. It just got nominated for 4 Oscars, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Excited to watch the Nosferatu reaction with Roxy and John.

Thanks for spoiling what he looks like in the thumbnail you guys are great
The amount of people hating on this movie is absolutely ridiculous. These people hating this film have no taste in movies.
can't blame them.

But you spoil everyone else with the thumbnail. Great job.
I knew as soon as this reaction dropped I had to bounce on that like button... crazy style
Ellen is played by Lily Rose Depp not Emma Karin. And yes you should watch the witch. It is eerily similar in tone and actor performance

When I saw this opening night, it might have been the most silent viewing I have every been apart of. I think the reason is that everyone was just on edge like never before. After the movie, then people finally began to breathe
Saw it in theaters on Christmas Day and yes, we were terrified 💀

Great watch guys, I describe Nosferatu as like a beautiful dark dream. Weirdly I watched Wallace and Gromit Vengeance Most Foul almost immediately after finding both as excellent examples of the craftsmanship of filmmaking.
My jaw dropped on the pigeon part when I was in the theater lol 😝
The sound design is so good you can hear how much blood Orlok gets every time he sups. He literally swallows a full gulp every time he takes a pull from their chest.
It makes me wonder what artery was he biting into to get that much blood out.
I love the Romani lute player just staring down Hutter like Miguel in Road to El Dorado.
Yeah super annoying. There's just no reason they need to do that.
@@zoephotoart I know UA-cam definitely tells accounts which thumbnail gets the most clicks, and I can guarantee you this one got more clicks.
