    Thank you, Lord,
for the trials that come my way.
In that way I can grow each day
    as I let you lead,
    And thank you, Lord,
for the patience those trials bring.
    In that process of growing,
    I can learn to care.
But it goes against the way
I am to put my human nature down
and let the Spirit take control of all I do.
    'Cause when those trials come,
    my human nature shouts the thing to do;
    and God's soft prompting
    can be easily ignored.
    I thank you, Lord,
with each trial I feel inside,
    that you're there to help,
lead and guide me away from wrong.
    'Cause you promised, Lord,
    that with every testing,
that your way of escaping is easier to bear.
But it goes against the way
I am to put my human nature down
and let the Spirit take control of all I do.
    'Cause when those trials come,
    my human nature shouts the thing to do;
    and God's soft prompting
    can be easily ignored.
    I thank you, Lord,
for the victory that growing brings.
    In surrender of everything
    life is so worth while.
    And I thank you, Lord,
that when everything's put in place,
out in front I can see your face,
    and it's there you belong.
    Merci, Seigneur,
    Car lorsque les épreuves arrivent,
    ma nature humaine crie ce qu'il faut faire ;
et la douce incitation de Dieu
    peut être facilement ignorée.
    Je te remercie, Seigneur,
à chaque épreuve que je ressens à l'intérieur,
que tu es là pour m'aider,
me guider et m'éloigner du mal.
    Car tu as promis, Seigneur,
    ma nature humaine crie ce qu'il faut faire ;

Only come across Cynthia in 2022. Her singing is so anointed and it reveals the deep passion and love she has for Jesus. Almost every song she sings ministers to me. God can and does use music . Great that your allowing yourself Cynthia to be used by God to minister to all people. Be encouraged I was one who God set free from immorality and it wasn't too hard for Him too do. He is God Almighty and He loves us all .So go my dear beloved sister to all who are lost in this dark world. Whether in church are outside of it we are all sinners saved by grace. For when we love and obey God with all our hearts ...and we love our neighbour we understand the fullness of God's word. LOVE is the more excellent way....

Thirty five years ago, on October 2, 1981, six seniors from Houghton College were tragically killed in a fatal automobile accident, on their way to pick up their costumes in Buffalo, NY, for the Homecoming Parade that coming weekend. These six students were all spiritual leaders in their own way , members of the Senior class of 1982. Their early passing had a tremendous impact on those of us who were left behind. Many of us found our inspiration and even call upon our lives to live for the Lord. My call into pastoral counseling was a result of their deaths.
The night of their passing, there was an impromptu chapel service at Wesley Chapel. One of the decedent's older brother, Warren Bushart, shared this song during that service.. I'm not sure who actually sang the song, but on this anniversary, I remember vividly that evening of shared grief, and even more importanly, hope of Resurrection. Glory be to God on high. May their lives be remembered in our ministries, even today.

I also used a two part arrangement with my Choir when I taught at a small Christian School in New Jersey, and used that opportunity to share the faithful witness of those six as an inspiration to make their mark in the world, seeing in life's challenges God's faithfulness. Thanks for this song!

I was looking for the backstory to this song because I will be playing it (on my saxophone) at the funeral of one of the dearest people I know and one of the best piano players. We first did this song together back in 1986 just a few weeks after her husband of 38 years had passed away. We went on to do this song together at least 12 more times in church with the last time being in 2014. Over the years we really didn't have to practice, but we would just play together and let the words flow through us. It was such a sweet time. She passed away this past weekend at the age of 93...I will miss her but "Thank You, Lord."

Hello, I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia. I knew this song since I was a student in a college in Yogyakarta and lived in a dormitory ruled by nuns, called Syantikara back to 1990. One of my fellow (now she's a SCJ sister/nun in Myanmar) tought us for a mass service in a church near our dorm, and to celebrate our dormitory anniversary in the next following year. Since then, this song touched my heart in a very special way. Give me the strenght I need when I have to face dark times in school, jobs, relationships, and so on. But I never feel so touched like this. In February 2021, our little family battled with covid. My husband's very ill, he got the worst symptoms and been in critical situations for several times. I can't count my tears, but Our Lord does. He answered my prayers in the most magical way, right at the moment everytime I need. We survive from covid now. When I look back to many nights, I feel that He gives me blessings through those trials. He gives us all we need, help, supplies, and special prayers from our family, friends and relatives. Those are the proof that we are not alone. He always there to help, lead, and guide. All I have to do is surrender and believe, He will put everything in place. Yes, I Thank You, Lord. (Nana Lystiani)

Good morning, My mother sang this song at church many times. She was also a minister's wife (for 49 years) and fully understood the depths of this wonderful thought. Thank you, Dan for "Thank you, Lord" and thank you Cynthia Clawson for all the amazing music you've graced us with through the many years. A couple of times I attended the church in Austin that your husband pastored. I wished that I could walk up there and sing with you. But I absolutely sang with you in my seat. I LOVE your album The Hymn Singer. I know a lot of Christians end their correspondence with God Bless you, but I sincerely hope that God richly blesses both of you.

During a tumultuous period of adolescence this marvelous inspired song became the prayer that helped a confused young man hold on. Eventually I came to understand the deeper significance of the words and today I can say without reservation that those trials are indeed precious, and its hard for me to imagine my human nature ever accepting the gift of salvation had not trials brought me face to face with grace. Thank you Dan Burgess.

Cynthia came to our church a few times during late 70s and 80s and spent time with my sister, Marilyn, who was just beginning to show symptoms of what became a bad case of BP schizoid affective disorder. Always, she loved Cynthia's music and she felt she had a speciall connexion to CC since her time earlier. Marilyn grew seriously close to Jesus and His mother, Mary, became closely important to her, too, especially when her mind's creative nightmares grew ever-intense and she was attacked by the Evil One in an awful way. Marilyn died unexpectedly 22 March 2015 at her home in Rockville, Maryland. Psalm 139 was used at the Liturgy of Christian Death and Resurrection, Prince of Peace Parish, Darnestown, Maryland. (This is beautiful. I wish i could include it in my audio psalter of music for Christian Prayer, morning, evening prayer ; compline and vespers.).
Christ is risen, Indeed, Christ is risen from the dead. Hallelujah

Thank you, Dan, for sharing these incredible videos with the world. This song has followed me and inspired me all through my ministry - the words becoming more powerful as the years go by. Cynthia Clawson - what better singer to interpret this song? None. Period. She, too, has inspired me, lifted me, comforted me, challenged me, thrilled me ever since I first heard her in Chapel services as a student at Baylor University in the 1970's. (Her sister, Patti, was my church pianist once upon a time...) And Brian Mann. What an incredible, sensitive, Spirit-led pianist! This is Altogether Lovely, and I cannot wait to share it with others who know and love and appreciate your wonderful music. God bless you!

      Dan,
This powerful song has been a blessing, as can be seen by the many responses. My brother Bob and Beth, his wife, lost a daughter at 28 and a son at 47. They know what suffering is, but they also know the sustaining power of God's presence in their lives. Bob's rendition was an inspiration to us and many others. Sometimes God gets a hold of a heart and a pen,
and the resulting song reaches out to others in a profound way.
      Blessings,
      Ron Sprunger

I'm loving Cynthia's rendition ... Beautiful -- remember this song from years ago. I'm a tad "confused" with the lyrics rewrites, [totally get why]. Thank you!

Dan - thanks for sharing these 3 videos ... I go back to the MUSICalifornia days, first around 1980 and then again several years in the mid-90's. When you were the MC you did such a great job - you kept things light when they needed to be, but allowed tender moments to linger. Back when I was directing a choir, the choral book with your songs lasted through the years with several favorites. Glad to see you're still doing your thing and I'm continually blessed by your lyrics and the melodic strains ... thanks for sharing it with God's people!

You made my day, Donn. "Young men see visions, and old men dream dreams." My dream has always been that what God gave me would have an impact on people until I'm actually with Him. Your gracious comments go a long way in fulfilling that dream. Blessings to you and yours. db

Thank you, Mr. Burgess. Beautiful lyrics and music. It's one of my favorite songs. It took me a while to find it. We have a Vietnamese version but I don't know the English lyrics until I typed your name in UA-cam. May God bless you and your music ministry. To God be the glory!!!
