That sinking/silent feeling when you accidently wipe out a group of team-mates, and the game throws you to the lobby to think about your actions.
The blast radius might not be much bigger, but I'm betting the concussive force and lethality in that blast is way higher than the Pe-8 5000lb.

According to many sources, blast effect of the explosion decreases proportionally to the cube of distance. So increasing yield 8 times will only increase damage radius 2 times. With 6400kg vs 5000kg you only get 1.085767047 times increase in radius; 105m*1.085767047 is 114m, math checks out
does the inverse check out for the 4,000lb bomb only being 40m?

It's 4000 kg effective tnt vs 5200 kg I think actually. The 12k bomb has a much higher explosive vs total weight ratio compared to other bombs.

@@chfire2004 Yeah, I was trying to have fun doing some high-altitude Pe-8 bombing. Map was Normandy, dropped on B from like 4500m. When I dropped, there were 4 enemies on B. In an unlikely turn of events, my team expertly killed all 4, and moved on to the cap in the 20 seconds it took for the bomb to fall. I watched in horror as I vaporized 5 of my own. lol
@@marshaldowns8957 He 111 with the 3000 for me, i dropped a bomb at an enemy cap that had some enemies, i was flying high and with a bit of a fuse so when the bomb actually got there my team had overrun it and i instantly got booted for 5 tks.... never have i experienced a more horrifying mistake.
Especially when you tell your team that you are going to drop it on said locationand they just drive there the second u released the bomb... Nut hey a 6 enemy kill was still nice
It’s already happened to me where the Lancaster bombed an objective and hit absolutely zero enemies and direct impacted me in my Churchill 7

I had 2 TK's last night in my lancaster. I put in chat that I was bombing B and then said when bomb was out. 2 idiot teammates rushed the cap after bomb was out. Needless to say back to the hanger I went.

I believe the reason the explosion destruction radius is only a little bigger even though it has so much more explosive material is a result of the inverse square law

Grand Slam and FAB-5000 were also designed against different targets. Grand Slam was designed to penetrate concrete bunkers and to destroy them from inside and FAB was designed to detonate laterally to cause maximum damage on surface against industrial targets.

You're mostly right about what the Grand Slam was used for, but the Blockbuster was designed to explode on the surface, and is about half as heavy as the Grand Slam. The Grand Slam was designed to compromise underground structures like bunkers without a direct hit via tremors. It would penetrate deep into the ground and explode, and the resulting "earthquake" would collapse the underground bunker.
For anyone watching thats going to play this you need to release slightly before your target, as currently bomb always hits the back of the bomb bay when its released and gets nudged forward a decent amount.
Or, in this case, hits the TOP of your aircraft and gets nudged UPWARD a decent amount.
i need to hit it with my article of the plane itself because i dive when i spawn, so it drop way before otherwise

Since it's exploding into a volume, the radius of destruction increases with the cube root of the TNT. So 8kg has only 2x the radius of 2kg TNT. In this case we have cuberoot(6350/5000)*104m = 114m so gaijin is right on the money.
It is however worth bearing in mind that the area encompassed increases with the square of the radius. So you get an 8.3% increase in radius, but a 17.3% increase in area of effect.
Also you can take two lancasters if you really want so thats nice.

What about 22000 lbs grand slam bomb?
The bomb may only have an ~8.5% larger destruction radius, but on a 2D plane that's an ~18% larger area, and a 3D sphere's volume would be 28% larger, which matches decently with it having 26% more TNT equivalent

Fun fact, the cookie bomb and the 12'000 are the same serie, being the Blockbuster. There's three model, the 4k, 8k and the 12k. But the lancaster even carried a 20k earthquake bomb called "Grand Slam"

The two vehicles I've been hoping they add to the Warthunder is the Churchill AVRE with its 230mm spigot mortar and the Lancaster B.2 Special with the Grand Slam Bomb(22,000lb) which sits underneath it like it's some kinda quad prop dive bomber.
The 230mm mortar has a max range of 200 meters
that ending of the video was something else, he literally bombed the game away :)

To be fair, at that size, a few meters make a big difference is area affected. From those 9 extra meters you go from 8560 square meters to 10207 square meters of blasted area or a 20% increase in area effect. The TNT equivalent goes up by 26% from 5041 kg to 6357 kg so it's not that out of line.
That photo-finish triple kill/triple FF at the end is what war thunder is all about!

There are better but Phly is still popular for a reason. Checkout Bruce Leeroy for the absolute best helicopter antics in WT, he plays with full controls in VR and just does stuff impossible for anyone with M&KB. He should be flying christmas trees or filming an 80s action movie.

They also tried 4 bolted together. 2 8,000lbs strapped together. There’s a crater in The new forest from the testing.

i'm pretty sure other already said that, but the radius increase is in fact quite huge. it' seems to not be big but the surface covered is way bigger (square law)
it's basic math :
105m radius cover a surface of 34636m².
114m radius cover a surface of 40828m².
So it's a 17% increase of the obliterated surface. ^^ pretty good for a 26% increase of explosive mass.

just FYI, that extra nine meters of death radius over the PE-8, is almost exactly 18% more area. So it's 26% more TNT equivalent and 18% more area of death to armored vehicles.
