Hey guys love your channel, just wanted to share a piece of advice...for what it is worth. A blowoff valve/diverter valve: 1) works by removing excess pressure between the turbo and the throttle body eliminating turbo stall. As you accelerate your exhaust brings your turbo to speed and pressure in the charge pipe, as you let off the throttle the excess pressure in the charge pipe needs to go somewhere. If your throttle body is closed the pressure will back feed into the turbo leading to dreaded turbo stall. 2) As there is no "vacuum" in the line there is no need for a air filter. 3) For your best bet to get the results you and we as viewers wish you get, will be to play around with the spring in the blowoff valve. Smaller spring or playing with the current spring's tension by adjusting the screw on the top. Again love your channel I hope this helps and we can watch you guys make the blowoff valve as loud as the Porsche!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, you may already know this but I thought I should clarify what a blow off valve (BOV) is. A blow off valve bleeds off pressure created when the throttle plate is closed. With a larger engine, you get the distinct PSHHH sound. This protects your throttle body and turbo charger because when the throttle plate is closed, the air has no place to go so it's forced back through the turbo charger, causing "turbo flutter", the typical SUTUTU sound you hear when you lift off the throttle. This is NOT good for your turbo as it can cause major shaft play and subsequently compressor damage. You should always have a BOV on a turbo charged engine. Just my $.02. Love the show!
Guess you could make a mechanical blow off valve. Have a cable attached to the throttle (carb lever) to the BOV and make your own contraption with a spring so when you let go of the throttle it opens up the valve using a spring and a rod. So when you apply throttle it closes the valve instead of trying to get the vacuum to work correctly. You also could use a 12v solenoid and a pressure switch on the throttle arm then adjust the switch so around 25% or less it has the solenoid open and use a relay with the ignition so it doesn't apply power when it's off. Then you put a whistle or any type of end after the solenoid to achieve your sound.
Just yesterday I had an idea for you guys. Instead of that 3 wire alternator, I think it would be easier to adapt a Honda GX390 10 amp charge coil to the 420cc. It wouldn't Rob much or any power, be all the power you'd need plus it would be generating more power while the engine is at idle than the alternator is. Just a suggestion, so you wouldn't have to worry about an extra belt, large pulley or loss of power.
That's a diverter valve and technically speaking a VW part although probably used on everything in the VAG lineup. it's the same one used on many VW's and Audi's. VW and Audi's use diverter valves to recirculate the pressure as they don't blow it off to atmosphere in their systems they use a recirculating system. If you used an actual BOV you'd likely get a better woosh sound lol.

I heard it initially ay 5:48, but because of the slippery rear wheels, you might not be loading up the engine enough to spool up the turbo. What it the boost pressure during the runs?
That's true the engine has to be under heavy load and then release throttle to get the loudest turbo noises. Without much traction the engine never gets much load on it.
From the time I watched your first riding video I thought to myself... your blow off valve is actually a recirculation valve and usually diverts boost after the intercooler back into the system so isn't designed for vent to atmosphere. I'd take the filter off it and look for a basic dump valve with an alloy trumpet on the end. Do keep your good work up tho. I enjoy seeing you two guys and your quest for speed.
grateful video guys. if you want more blow off sound add a tank to the charged intake pipe. you have enough pressure but not enough volume, down side is you will lose some throttle response as you will have more volume in the intake to pressurize. feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. blow off valve will only activate when mounted right at your throttle body and you go from wide open throttle to closed throttle rapidly (its function is to prevent you from blowing your throttle blade into the engine due to high boost pressures surges), the exhaust wastegate is designed to limit your max boost pressure and as someone else stated the filter will also muffle it as well as slow its operation.
guys i don't know if you've heard this yet. but those factory blow off valves like the one off the Porsche are designed to be silent, to get the sound you want you will need an aftermarket one... one with adjust-ability so you can wind it right down.

It's not a pulse (or vacuum) that you want to hear. The Porsche (or any other) blowoff valve controls the turbocharger boost pressure to the engine. If the valve is set for 15 psi, then the turbocharger can generate up to 15 psi, and the blowoff valve gets rid of the pressurized air above that would make it more than 15 psi. The Porsche valve you're using is meant for a much, much bigger turbocharger and much higher air volume. That means it might not be able to work efficiently or maybe not at all for a couple reasons.
In a normal situation like a bigger engine, what you're hearing is the wastegate taking pressure away by bleeding higher pressure to make lower pressure.
even if the blow off valve doesnt make noise they serve a real purpose. They help extend the life of the turbo so every time the throttle slams shut the pressure in the charge pipe doesnt ram into the turbo

But when Americans become wimps and don't stand their grounds we loose are given rights and become a enslaved society like we are today.
The flutter is caused by not having a BOV when the pressure builds up due to the throttle closing. The air blast people like to hear from a BOV is just that: bleeding off the intake pressure so as to prevent turbo flutter.
Man I am with you and being pissed off by people that use that as the basis of their complaints about peoples driving. Its one of those things that puts me in a real fit of anger and dislike. Had a neighbor call the cops on me cause i was doing high speed starts on my own property. Registered vehicle, but the spill over if i where to not slow down in time was into my own property and safe. (plus i was 100% on my own land). Cops told me off for 40 minutes before they listened to me about I own the property i am driving on. That they only had an easement to it for access. They apologized after that, but still really pissed me off. Hope shit works out.
Great videos guys I have turbo charged single cylinder motor bikes and the only way to get rid of the pulse and make power is to fit a accumulator to the charge pipe 4 x the cc of the engine (e.g. 250cc need a 1000cc tank ) so when it makes boost it will have some room to store it as the intake valve is closed , this may have been covered by someone else

You had a lot of good points about the bov effectiveness on the setup (small displacement & poor vacuum).It seemed like it was making some noise at higher engine speed closed throttle, though.For more noise, you guys might try temporarily taking the filter off the end and putting a [whistle or kazoo] inline {or narrow the opening of the vent hole} with some sort of cap drilled at the end.Those style diverter valves are used to recirculate boost in factory trim, so they are not really tuned for noise, more meant to be free flowing.Also, you can try putting a weaker spring inside the vacuum diaphragm so that it opens with less pressure.I know that the aftermarket ones unscrew torwards the top to change out the spring, on yours you may just have to epoxy it back together (test spring tention by just zip tieing it shut until you find the correct pressure).Sorry for the long post, the video got the gears turning heh.OhNoGoForIt
A 1982 280zx turbo has a small factory oil cooler that looks like a tiny intercooler. You could make it fit the drift trike so that there is more air to blow-off.

That's a diverter valve. it's used to recirculate unused air pressure back into the system. A blow-off valve opens from an excess of air pressure from the turbo. it works in the same way a radiator cap does.
Pretty sure thats a oem bosch bov. The issue i think you guys may have is the spring pressure is set to high in the valve for your application, its for a porsche turbo 6cyl i am assuming. They would run a minimum of 8-10psi from factory. Plus would generate more than an equal amount of vacuum to open the valve againt the spring rate. Try seeing what the maximum boost pressure is on the kart, then look for a oem bov say off of a much smaller factory turbo engine or a adjustable spring rate bov. Would then be a higher chance of operating under such smaller negative pressure on the kart. Really enjoying the videos and interesting and clever masterpieces you guys come up with, keep up the good flicks.

Maybe put a small restriction in the vacuum line to the blowoff valve to help reduce the pulses. I use them in vacuum gauges to reduce pulses when syncing carbs.
Have you guys put pulse cancelling filters in the line to your boost gauge... They work on a vacuum gauge for a single cylinder motorbike and smooth the needle wobble. Also you guys should sort out your piping now you have it running. Also... Please consider some form of twin cylinder engine to swap into it under that turbo setup!
That's technically not a blow off valve, it's a diverter valve. They're used when the engine management doesn't allow for the discharge of intake air as this will affect a/f ratio. You need a blow off valve with spring back pressure that is easily adjusted. It'll eliminate the need for vacuum to open the valve.
You want to smooth out the vacuum pulses, go to the auto wrecker and look under the hood of just about any 70's ford boat...LTD, Lincoln etc or an S10 4x4 for the front diff actuator. They have a little black plastic ball in there somewhere that holds vacuum. It has a check valve on the inlet so it continuously builds vacuum then the outlet has a smooth vacuum signal. Also, like someone else commented... build a proper turbo pipe. that scabbed up thing with all the welds and the 90 at the end is probably equivalent to having 20 feet of pipe between the turbo and carb. PS. love the videos. keep up the fun and screw the grumpy old man.

Steal a vacuum reservoir from a car and add that to the system, should act as a vacuum capacitor and maintain a smoother amount of vacuum.

Could you maybe use a lighter spring on the valve or is that not how it works?

That's true the engine has to be under heavy load and then release throttle to get the loudest turbo noises. Without much traction the engine never gets much load on it.

I know the feeling of being told you can't ride those things on public streets. I got the cops called on me for riding my pw80 which is the quietest thing ever and I just finished building my race kart so anytime no I should get the cops on me for that. Anyways love the vids guys.

your blow off valve is actually a recirculation valve and usually diverts boost after the intercooler back into the system so isn't designed for vent to atmosphere. I'd take the filter off it and look for a basic dump valve with an alloy trumpet on the end. Do keep your good work up tho. I enjoy seeing you two guys and your quest for speed.

grateful video guys. if you want more blow off sound add a tank to the charged intake pipe. you have enough pressure but not enough volume, down side is you will lose some throttle response as you will have more volume in the intake to pressurize. feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. blow off valve will only activate when mounted right at your throttle body and you go from wide open throttle to closed throttle rapidly (its function is to prevent you from blowing your throttle blade into the engine due to high boost pressures surges), the exhaust wastegate is designed to limit your max boost pressure and as someone else stated the filter will also muffle it as well as slow its operation.

guys i don't know if you've heard this yet. but those factory blow off valves like the one off the Porsche are designed to be silent, to get the sound you want you will need an aftermarket one... one with adjust-ability so you can wind it right down.

It's not a pulse (or vacuum) that you want to hear. The Porsche (or any other) blowoff valve controls the turbocharger boost pressure to the engine. If the valve is set for 15 psi, then the turbocharger can generate up to 15 psi, and the blowoff valve gets rid of the pressurized air above that would make it more than 15 psi. The Porsche valve you're using is meant for a much, much bigger turbocharger and much higher air volume. That means it might not be able to work efficiently or maybe not at all for a couple reasons.
In a normal situation like a bigger engine, what you're hearing is the wastegate taking pressure away by bleeding higher pressure to make lower pressure.

even if the blow off valve doesnt make noise they serve a real purpose. They help extend the life of the turbo so every time the throttle slams shut the pressure in the charge pipe doesnt ram into the turbo

The flutter is caused by not having a BOV when the pressure builds up due to the throttle closing.
The air blast people like to hear from a BOV is just that: bleeding off the intake pressure so as to prevent turbo flutter.
Man I am with you and being pissed off by people that use that as the basis of their complaints about peoples driving. Its one of those things that puts me in a real fit of anger and dislike. Had a neighbor call the cops on me cause i was doing high speed starts on my own property. Registered vehicle, but the spill over if i where to not slow down in time was into my own property and safe. (plus i was 100% on my own land). Cops told me off for 40 minutes before they listened to me about I own the property i am driving on. That they only had an easement to it for access. They apologized after that, but still really pissed me off. Hope shit works out.

Great videos guys I have turbo charged single cylinder motor bikes and the only way to get rid of the pulse and make power is to fit a accumulator to the charge pipe 4 x the cc of the engine (e.g. 250cc need a 1000cc tank ) so when it makes boost it will have some room to store it as the intake valve is closed , this may have been covered by someone else

I'm surprise Ike's loud cars and trucks doesn't piss him off, but a little drift trike with a snowblower engine will? My Vanguard 16hp Cub Cadet is louder than it and no one cares. Next door neighbor has a 6 year old son and he rides his Mini pit bike (toddler size) up and down the street and I don't call the cops...of course I'm only 23 and I envy that kid.

That is a sweet project and cool garage guys. You have my SUB! You had a lot of good points about the bov effectiveness on the setup (small displacement & poor vacuum).It seemed like it was making some noise at higher engine speed closed throttle, though.For more noise, you guys might try temporarily taking the filter off the end and putting a [whistle or kazoo] inline {or narrow the opening of the vent hole} with some sort of cap drilled at the end.Those style diverter valves are used to recirculate boost in factory trim, so they are not really tuned for noise, more meant to be free flowing.Also, you can try putting a weaker spring inside the vacuum diaphragm so that it opens with less pressure.I know that the aftermarket ones unscrew torwards the top to change out the spring, on yours you may just have to epoxy it back together (test spring tention by just zip tieing it shut until you find the correct pressure).Sorry for the long post, the video got the gears turning heh.OhNoGoForIt

A 1982 280zx turbo has a small factory oil cooler that looks like a tiny intercooler. You could make it fit the drift trike so that there is more air to blow-off.

That's a diverter valve. it's used to recirculate unused air pressure back into the system. A blow-off valve opens from an excess of air pressure from the turbo. it works in the same way a radiator cap does.
Pretty sure thats a oem bosch bov. The issue i think you guys may have is the spring pressure is set to high in the valve for your application, its for a porsche turbo 6cyl i am assuming. They would run a minimum of 8-10psi from factory. Plus would generate more than an equal amount of vacuum to open the valve againt the spring rate. Try seeing what the maximum boost pressure is on the kart, then look for a oem bov say off of a much smaller factory turbo engine or a adjustable spring rate bov. Would then be a higher chance of operating under such smaller negative pressure on the kart. Really enjoying the videos and interesting and clever masterpieces you guys come up with, keep up the good flicks.

Maybe put a small restriction in the vacuum line to the blowoff valve to help reduce the pulses. I use them in vacuum gauges to reduce pulses when syncing carbs.
Have you guys put pulse cancelling filters in the line to your boost gauge... They work on a vacuum gauge for a single cylinder motorbike and smooth the needle wobble.
Also you guys should sort out your piping now you have it running.
Also... Please consider some form of twin cylinder engine to swap into it under that turbo setup!
That's technically not a blow off valve, it's a diverter valve. They're used when the engine management doesn't allow for the discharge of intake air as this will affect a/f ratio.
You need a blow off valve with spring back pressure that is easily adjusted. It'll eliminate the need for vacuum to open the valve.

You want to smooth out the vacuum pulses, go to the auto wrecker and look under the hood of just about any 70's ford boat...LTD, Lincoln etc or an S10 4x4 for the front diff actuator. They have a little black plastic ball in there somewhere that holds vacuum. It has a check valve on the inlet so it continuously builds vacuum then the outlet has a smooth vacuum signal. Also, like someone else commented... build a proper turbo pipe. that scabbed up thing with all the welds and the 90 at the end is probably equivalent to having 20 feet of pipe between the turbo and carb. PS. love the videos. keep up the fun and screw the grumpy old man.
