I love to hear older people sing from experience. Years old experience, trial and error is in that voice. Seems like that is all black folks had back then was their singing for a better situation.
It seems that she had an operation of the throat 20 years before this recording, and it's just sad not to hear the end of the song, which shows the spirit who influenced Cara and Willa so much...
@@jaredpayton4998 I'm trying to remember. It may have been Tell Mary Not To Weep. I'll put the records on my old turntable and make sure. I don't want to get this wrong.
Her voice changed after throat several surgeries, additionally she is much older than when she started the group over forty years prior. After her surgery Clara began to take on the role as lead singer, eventually leaving Mom’s group to form her own group, Clara Ward and the Ward Famous Singers.
She said she had to have surgery cut the negative undertones. All though she was something else making her daughter slave to the on the road gospel entertainment industry. Made Clara who she was but she died so young.
Gertrude Ward created a booking agency for gospel acts, sponsored tours under the name "The Ward Gospel Cavalcade", established a publishing house for gospel music, and wrote an instructional manual for churches, detailing how to promote gospel programs. Gertrude created and managed a second group, "The Clara Ward Specials", to accompany the Ward Singers. She did so much for Gospel singers of that day!!
