- There can be no doubt that motorcyclists are turning their backs on full-height touring and commuting, motorcycle boots in favour of shorter, easier-to-wear, ankle boots. And it's not difficult to understand why.
Now back in the old days, motorcycle boots were all tall. Whatever kind of bike you rode, whatever kind of riding you did, you bought a pair of calf-length boots. But that was when we all wore leather or textile suits. The bike might have been the only form of transport many people had, and not everybody was flush enough to have different riding outfits to match the conditions, or a stable of different bikes.
It was, more than anything else, the move to riding jeans that pushed people towards shorter boots. You wear a jean for comfort, and to adopt a more casual look. And it didn't, and for some still doesn't, look right to match a pair of jeans with a full-height boot.
In fact, with modern single-layer jeans being so protective, we're seeing a lot of people commute and tour in jeans, and these people will often prefer a taller boot, so not everybody prefers a shorter one, but nonetheless the ankle boot is the direction of travel, and it is undoubtedly the case, these days, that shorter boots outsell taller boots.
The truth is that ankle boots are more comfortable, nicer to walk around in, easier to ride in, and more stylish. These days we want to be able to get off the bike, then go for a hike, or a walk around town. Sitting down for lunch in a restaurant wearing a pair of Daytona Road Stars, by contrast, always looks a bit odd. And, let's face it, a pair of touring boots is never going to the best option if you want to ride to, say, a bike show, and then spend the afternoon walking around it.
But when you buy a pair of short boots, you need to be aware that you are making sacrifices. There are trade offs that need to be confronted.
A short boot will not be as protective. The main footbed may well be every bit as strong on a short boot as it is on a taller one, but the lower shaft of the boot will mean that your shins and your calves are more exposed. If, in an accident, the lower half of your leg comes into contact with something sharp, something very solid, or something abrasive, a short boot will be found wanting. It doesn't matter how strong or protective a short boot is, a taller boot will, in certain areas, be more protective.
The other truth that has to be confronted when you wear a short boot is the compromise on waterproofing. Now I am obviously aware that most short boots come with waterproof membranes. Indeed, many of the boots we sell come with the best Gore-Tex membranes. But a short boot will never be as waterproof as a similarly equipped tall one.
And that's because, as you're riding down the road in heavy rain, the rain will bounce off the road and can find its way over the shaft of a short, ankle boot. Sometimes, it does this by first wetting the lower part of your jeans or textile pants. The water that has soaked into the material will then run into your boots to your feet.
This just won't happen if you're wearing a taller boot. The rain won't bounce that high, and if the bottom of your pants get soaking wet it won't matter.
There's another slight issue with short boots. If you are wearing waterproof over-trousers, they often won't seal around the shaft of a short boot. At any kind of speed, the elasticated bottoms of a waterproof pant can pop off the boot, allowing the rain to reach the foot.
The way we see it, we are not really telling anybody anything they didn't know, or could not have worked out for themselves, but bikers have a tendency, having spent too many hours on the internet, to believe what they want to believe. Every day here in the shop, we end up bursting people's balloons. People who want us to assure them that a short boot will be as waterproof or, as protective, as a tall one. Sorry but, by and large, it won't be. And that's fine. If you want to ride in a short boot, go ahead. I do a lot of my riding in short boots. But you need to understand what the trade offs are.
A short boot is nicer to ride in, and walk around in. And a short boot will often be more stylish; important perhaps if you're wearing jeans. But you will sacrifice a degree of protection, and a degree of waterproofness. Accept this, and you'll never be disappointed!

Any motorcycle riding boot should never ever have laces!
I don't care what they look like on my feet at lunch. I will always wear my Daytonas.

Some nice boots on offer here. I’ve been more than happy with my Thorogood 8 Inch Moc Toe Safety Boots with motorcycle jeans, admittedly not motorcycle specific. Longer trips and tours I’ve been delighted with my Revitt GTX Discovery boots. Comfort straight out the box and I love the ease of the BOA system.
Thoroughly enjoyed my last visit to your shop, when I bought my wonderful pair of Trickers. As you say, Chris, they are bloody fine boots. Still haven't worn them on the bike yet!

Great video, Chris, and I respect that you pooled a nice cross-section of product. I bought both daytona models from Motolegends and it occurs to me now to ask: for those of us who live in the States, when we eventually need a resole for daytona, is the only option to send back to them in Germany, or are there authorized daytona dealers throughout the world who can do resoles? And come to think of it, can shoes/boots WITHOUT Goodyear Welts even be resoled? Thanks again.

with enough research you can confidently buy online. I bought my boots sight unseen online after doing my due diligence and they fit perfectly and are my favorite boot by far. Forma Adventure Lows just in case you are curious.
The BOA system is excellent if you hate laces, I have a pair of RedWings (USA), expensive but have been worthwhile. I also recommend the Chelsea boot by RedBacks !

Please share some knowledge about the Forma Hyper waterproof membrane. I see they are pretty tall for a sneaker but how good is the waterproofing.

Looks like the Forma Hypers have a zip up the side, so not too much of an issue with the lacing up and lack of speed hooks etc.
I know it has a zip, but it’s also got a waterproof gusset. And so what I said is still the case. We love these boots, but of all the boots in the review these are the trickiest to put on, and take off. Can’t see why you would question what I said. I don’t just make this stuff up. If I say it’s difficult to lace up, it is! CP
I've got the held saxon in black. A very comfortable boot. My only complaint is the boot looks scruffy quite quickly. You can't just wipe it down with a damp cloth, i think it will need a lot of care to retain it's looks. Also the inner zip gets twisted easily. Otherwise a good boot.
Thinking to start riding soon, after I pass my Safety course and buy a motercycle of course. I want to be the safe I can so longs boots is something that I should go for correct?

Ex german army para boots and waterproof trousers kept me dry all day even my feet. Cost me very little secondhand.
What about laces. Could that be a hazard if they came loose?
boots need to fit. TCX are the only brand Ive found to fit me as all others are too narrow. Might have a look at Klims as well in future after this review

It would be helpful if you explained that the goretex guarantee for life only extends to the ‘useful life of the product’ which is not necessarily as long as we might think it is. And it’s Gore who decide what the useful life of the product is, not us, the user. You might still be wearing your boots in ten years time but will Gore guarantee that they’ll replace or repair them if they leak?
Useful life of the product is very generous. If your jacket/boot has a hole in it, or is falling apart, the game is over. But we’ve had customers with 15/20 year old jackets that have been replaced because they leaked. That’s pretty useful. I’m aware that since the Fortnine chap decided to use Gore as a click bait, a lot of people have thought it good sport to bash the brand, but truth be told they are in a different league to anybody else. You complain about Gore’s ‘useful life’ clause, but no other membrane manufacturer offers any guarantee whatsoever, so really what’s the issue? As far as we’re concerned, a Gore-Tex membrane is always worth paying for. CP
@@Motolegends I own numerous goretex products including jackets, trousers, boots and gloves. I have used goretex since 1986 and rate the product highly. I was not bashing the product but simply asking you to point out that the gore guarantee has limitations. Not for the first time on your channel you have chosen to adopt a very aggressive attitude towards someone instead of addressing the point that the poster has raised. It’s not necessary nor is it professional.

But does anybody make a good motorcycle boot that is actually shaped like a human foot? I mean a boot that allows your toes to splay, with the longest point on the big-toe side, NOT in the center. Since starting to wear Altras I can’t stand any “traditional”-shaped shoes/boots.
Jk make some great boots but cost a lot. 600 usd £500 but there are cheaper models but they are proper goodyear welted boots even can choose gow high they go.

They will set you back about £200 and look good off the bike.

Then rode home in them no problems
How dumb. Shoelaces to get caught in footpegs or kickstand. Or even chains. This happened to me. The Shoelace got caught on the footpeg as I tried to put my foot down to stop at a traffic light. I couldn't get it unstuck quick enough and fell of my bike with traffic everywhere. Don't buy bike shoes with laces unless they have a tab or something similar to cover the laces. You guys should know better. Someone prove me wrong..come on.
Agree! Laces are dangerous... I'm trying to minimise laces on my next pair of short boots.
y'know you can tuck laces inside the boots regardless if they have lace keepers on the outside lol

I didn't hear any women's boots being reviewed. 😒 Perhaps I was pouring a coffee and didn't hear the reference(s).
I know the Rokker Urban Racer, at least, comes in a women's version. Do you really have to make the very busy Sara do a separate women's video? Instead, you might just mention those boots which do come in women's styles on the next general (read, "men's") video.
FYI, this woman has probably purchased four times the number of motorcycle boots which her husband has purchased. Female rider numbers are way up. Wouldn't you like to increase market share? I bet Sara has her eye on that trend! C'mon, Chris, we ladies are out here riding!

I have very narrow and shallow feet, TCX seem to be the only brand that fit. I'm very happy with how mine (Jupiter?) work with my Stadler trousers.

Yes, that would be a shame because it’s a great boot, and there’s nothing quite like it; but we understand. The boot is currently in stock in most sizes in brown, but we are still waiting for our spring delivery. Sorry! CP
@@Motolegends what about the Icon Stormhawk? I remember someone saying in a review that although the Klim Outlander was certainly a better boot than the Stormhawk, it probably wasn't worth paying double.

MANY reports of KLIM Outlander boot defects exist in reviews from owners. KLIM is having a rash of quality control and issues with their products. That you don't acknowledge this makes me suspicious of your recommendations. Maybe we get the export-quality dregs here in the USA and the better stuff stays in Europe. Maybe, but I think not.
Your equation of Gore-Tex with quality is a great example of perpetuating misinformation. There are plenty of products with waterproof membranes that perform better than Gore-Tex and carry a substantial cost savings. I would never hike in a boot with a waterproof membrane unless it was cold or damp. Gore-tex claims to be waterproof AND breathable, but the reality is it is only one of those at a time. Back to your point about realistic expectations, Chris. But, for any waterproof membrane, Gore-tex or not, it's going to be hotter and sweatier. Those are not qualities I want in a hiker. Riding in a cold rain, perhaps, but not when it's warm, unless the rain has stopped. It simply can't breathe to an appreciable degree AND protect from the rain simultaneously.
We are without doubt the world’s largest seller of Klim’s Outlander boots, and we have had no issues. Literally none. And as the distributors and manufacturers know, if there’s a systemic problem with a product, we will drop it like a stone. So don’t know where your information comes from, but that’s not our experience. In terms of Gore-Tex, I hear the voice of Fortnine again. He was technically wrong about the ability of a Gore membrane to keep you dry and breathe. The truth is that nobody expects both to happen at the same time. That this was some kind of revelation was nonsense, but to a degree, and to a greater degree than other membranes, Gore’s membranes can do both. I have participated in laboratory tests that demonstrate this. In terms of a membrane in a boot, I suppose the emphasis has to be on ‘bike’ rather than ‘hike’. And over here at least very few people will ride in a boot without a membrane. But given our climate, a membrane in a hiking boot is also pretty useful. I walk on the North Downs every morning before work, and it would be most uncomfortable doing so in a boot without a membrane. It’s probably different if you live in the desert! CP

@@Motolegends I see my reply to yours (Chris) from yesterday was removed. Not sure if was by you or youtube. Either way, kind of seems like it's not okay in this forum to share one's opinions, especially if it against Klim or Gore-tex. I mentioned that Gore-tex prohibits brands from using their materials alongside a competitors, like eVent, in a similar way to the monopolies held by Coke and Pepsi. Another good reason to use another membrane, especially when there are better and cheaper ones, such as eVent. What you are paying for is mainly a name and an advertising giant. Hope this comment doesn't get pulled too. Oh, and I provided a link to the complaints about Klim quality control and stitching problems found at rev zila. Maybe providing a link is what got my comment pulled. I also mentioned, in my pulled post, that having a boot without a membrane makes it more versatile. You can carry a waterproof sock, like those by UK's Seal Skinz in case you get hit with a deluge. But, as Chris pointed out, some leather boots are nearly waterproof if you feed the leather periodically with a conditioner. Wear a waterproof sock if you will be in the rain for more than an hour or have prior experience on your ride with the water soaking through.
