I've continually upgrade my gear with Goodwill, garage and estate sale finds. For example, Nakamichi CD player $5 and pair of B&W Matrix 3s $20. It's not luck, it's perseverance. Out of 100 hunts, you might find a single gem. The fun is in the search. Thanks for the video.
Yep, you have to like the hunt as a hobby, fun.
It’s getting harder and harder to find vintage gear now ever since they started there on line shopping. But you did great!
Agreed and thank you I have lucky hauls once in awhile.
Those Def techs! WOW ! Unbelievable find!
Yep. If I didn't trust him, I'd assume he borrowed them for this video 😁
Audio thrift find of the year imo
your lucky to find stuff like that at Goodwill, the ones by me have nothing but crap, and all of the good stuff gets listed on online auctions.
I've bought a lot of great HiFi gear from thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army Thrift Stores, Value Village, etc.) including:
- Marantz, Sony, and Yamaha receivers ($12 to $25 each)
- A Sansui semi-automatic direct-drive turntable with gold-plated Empire cartridge ($25)
- Sony (3-head), Nikko, and Scott cassette decks ($10 or less each)
- Sony, Denon, and Technics CD players ($10 to $15 each)
- LG, Samsung, and Magnavox Blu-ray players ($7 to $12 each)
- JVC Super VHS ET VCR''s ($5 to $10 each)
- A Fender guitar amplifier ($15 instead of its $250 retail price)
So, with some time, patience, and perseverance, one can build a great HiFi system on a budget. :)
Being retired I make it a weekly habit searching out all of the goodwill outlets and thrift stores in my area for over 12 years looking for vintage electronics and found nill, zero.
I keep hearing of people's finds, yet I come up empty.
Estate sales are also a hot spot for HiFi. Download the estatesales.net app on your phone to find local sales.
A big part of it besides timing, luck (too many hunters nowadays, but items are donated and put out randomly and no one can be everywhere), or demographics.
The best hits I've had have been urban, suburban areas where there is some affluence, ie knowledge and disposable income for such items. Rural areas may have audio enthusiasts, but low population density means fewer items over longer periods, ie lower turnover.
I've gotten good hits at Salvation army stores located within ethnic communities and retiree areas, as estates are cleared out. Ethnic areas can have interesting name branded models and items that were sold overseas, out of us market
The estate sales in the Chicagoland area are a absolute joke. In the rare event there are some half way decent pieces at one of the sales, the people running the sales charge ebay or higher prices for the gear.
@@supsound Same here at suburban estate sales around SE Mi. With smartphones, even non technical people easily look up current market values, unlike pre-smartphone days of just 10 years ago or so, when most people couldn't be bothered hauling out their laptop with internet connection to research knowledgeable values.
That said, not EVERYONE does the research, even with their phone. Either lazy or no interest. Even if they do, they may still take low-ball offers or package deals with several items just to be done with it.
Cash and carry is king, and commands a discount since posting an ad online, fielding offers, handling payment and scams, arranging pickup adds hassle and cost.
Best estate sales deals are run by the family like a yard sale vs those run by hired estate sellers
Wow, incredible speakers you found! I guess it should be stressed this is not the norm for most Goodwill electronics sections. Finding deals like this usually take a lot of time checking the stores and patience. My local Goodwill rarely has any electronics other than some cheap brand DVD players. That said, persistence pays off, so keep checking and you can find some awesome deals! Great video, not sure why you don't have more views.
I haven’t found anything at the Goodwill in a long time, but I found some JBL 4312As at a local thrift store for $30 recently. I’ve also found KEFs and Bowers & Wilkins, RBH, and an Eico tube amp. I still tell people you can build a great system at thrift stores if you enjoy the hunt and are persistent.
Entire house sound systems goodwill outlet. Yamaha rx-v1900 5$ two jvc towers 5$, two pioneer towers 5$ , Klipsch center chanel 5$, two Polk active subs and a Yamaha active sub 15$, 2 Polk 12" woofers and tweeters, and Epson projector. About 100$ including cables and nile remote. Garage 4 Yamaha bookshelf speakers Yamaha center chanel, and Yamaha active sub. All for 15$. Bedroom I got a Logitech z5500 for 5$. Kitchen and deck have jvc and pioneer mix of speakers (4 in kitchen 4 on the deck ) with a jvc reciever. When I crank it all up together which it's all hardwired to smart speakers so I can control which zones play and how loud it's ground shaking
Finding those def techs and hsu sub at goodwill is insanity... If only lol
I recently found a vintage Harman Kardon receiver. Super clean.
Last year I took my teenage daughters out to town for an afternoon of bubble tea/coffee shops/window shopping, etc. On the way I pulled into the local Salvation Army store and tried to get them out of the car...no luck. So I left them to their iPhone music and ran into the store for 10 minutes. In and out with a pair of Mordaunt Short 20i's (for $38) that had been collecting dust on a top shelf and had gone unnoticed for some time. I took the chance after visually inspecting them...aside from dust...they looked sat. The kids, as usual, thought I was crazy with ANOTHER piece of audio gear. In any event, they cleaned up perfectly well and when matched with my Hitachi SR-903+ Marantz EQ20...they shined. At the moment, they are my favorite pair of bookshelf speakers (vs Dali Spektor 2's ~$200 new, Sony SS CSD 1's). I really enjoy the hunt for vintage gear. Will have to compare the MS20i's to a "NEW-OLD STOCK" set of Sony SS-E34's that I just snagged for $19 (plus $20 shipping). These SS-E34's must be nearly 4 decades old (mid 1980's, I assume) yet came boxed like new from a warehouse.
That is an excellent find. Many times the older stuff will be underpriced which is where we win!
You guys in the US dont know how lucky you are having stores like Goodwill at your disposal. Here in the UK,charity shops and recycling centres are prohibited my law from selling used electrical products. This is in case some body blows themselves up by mistake, and files a claim against the company.Such a waste,as this stuff will probably end up in landfill.I'm jealous, after watching this😁
To find the best deals and treasures at Goodwill stores and other thrift stores, aside from going to those stores regularly, the key is to get there early in the morning if possible (The early bird gets the worm) or if only evenings are possible, choose unconventional days of the week to be the first to discover new equipment like Tuesday's to Thursday's because on Friday nights and on the weekend, there are much bigger crowds of shoppers with whom to compete.
So cool! Loved your finds!
Great finds man! 👍 You gotta love it!
I shop goodwill and other thrift stores often. Built my system out of goodwill.
Found a reel to reel, denon receivers, array of albums, and surround speakers, yall don’t know what you’re missing, you can’t lose with the price even turntables, everyone that enter my home think that I spent thousands of dollars
I got quite a collection of vintage gear but it took 30 plus years. A lot of fun hunting at flea markets, tag sales, ads.
Nice def techs! Good find man
Very nice!
We want to hear it my friend. Hopefully you started doing that. That's how you grow your channel.
I've gotten all of my speaker stuff at Goodwill and Thrift stores. Yamaha V485 (2018 A/V receiver with Wifi) $5, Yamaha V385 (2018 A/V Receiver) $40. Yamaha SW050 subwoofer $25. Samsung M7 wireless speaker $40. Episode 500 passive soundbar $30. and just recently Focal Sib Evo Atmos Speakers $15 for the pair and Focal Sib Evo (smaller speakers with no atmos) $12. can't believe they STILL sell the focals for $999/499 respectively and the V385 for 400! I RARELY use speakers and use headphones 99.9 percent of the time because I live with other people and prefer headphones anyway but at least i didn't spend much on amazing equipment and speakers. (if only one day i can find a REAL nice set of audezes or something ;) )
Couple of Audio thrifting tips
That's a nice SACD player, and I can never have enough quality branded 5 disc carousels, which I prefer over those 100 disc+changers.
Bolo for 5 disc Cd/Dvd changers from Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Yamaha, etc. Some models play Dvd Audio and or SACD discs in addition to Cd and Dvd video discs. Also look for hdcd decoding on single disc and changers. Scan the brand, trademark logos to check for hdcd, SACD, Dvd Audio capabilities.
Many Sony Blu-ray players of the past 10 years also include SACD playback, though more recent models only have HDMI outs, no analog, so the receiver needs HDMI too. Still, I've scored many Sony Blu-ray 3d players with analog, HDMI and SaCd capabilities. They are some of the only SaCd players able to output raw dsd over HDMI for external dac use.
Seen a SX-1980 online for $950 - said perfect conditon and it looked perfect - to good to be true. becarefull as a buyer.
At first I thought I'd hate this video, but Damn... That's a heck of a deal! Nice.
I got lucky. Every once in awhile you can find some good stuff.
I was at our local goodwill one evening at closing time but found nothing , very little electronics at this store, the next morning I went there around 11:00am and found a pair of
infinity RSe speakers for $20.00 they looked like the little brother to my infinity RSb, perfect match, I took them home and got no sound , upon inspecting the back I noticed a fuse missing once installing the new fuse they played perfectly what a score the surrounds were perfect and matched my RSb speakers even the grill badges are the same , same fabric and oak vernier
That was a unbeatable score
He must live in the high rent district, hey another way to hook up the sub is : if the receiver still lets the speakers play when using the 1/4 jack run a 1/4 to RCA cable to the low level inputs on the sub
there is nothing in my local goodwills, you got lucky
Garage and estate sales are always a win for me as well!
I find headphones sometimes
Yours is like mine, bad paintings, old clothes, used dishes and nasty kids toys.
You know what would be a cool video idea would be like maybe if you worked in conjunction with other youtubers and you tried to find the best set up from a goodwill or thriftshop or whatever and have it be just a fun small competition
Great video
Cool you should do a series
I’m thinking about it! Might be a cool IGTV series! Or both UA-cam and IGTV!
Found a pioneer cassette player for $10, and an onkyo CD player for $8. Would’ve spent about $250 for the whole thing if I had gone to eBay.
Nice haul!
Great find. Recommend blowing it off outside or at least in the garage. And wear a mask.
I have a HSU sub. They have a great product.
My go to substance to get rid of stickers is Lighter Fluid you find in the tobacco section of a store. Works great. Soak that sticker with the fluid and soon it just peels off. I high recommend you blow out the dust outdoors. Why he's doing in doors mystifies me. Now he has dust everywhere.
Hey Mike, test a sub using an rca cable and touch the outer and inner contacts and if u hear it hum your good. Just plugging it in doesnt tell u if its good
WD40 does a great job of removing the adhesive from the stickers with minimal effort.
Two words
Goo Gone
I think I saw 3 or 4 roaches crawl out of the bottom, hahaha
Those Q Concept 300's! 😍
I know right. I didn’t want to give them back lmao 😂
@@mykandrew I settled for the 3050i towers from Q and am still very happy coming from 28 year old Bose 601.
Some scores over past couple years:
Sony 1000ES Receiver
Harmon Kardon Dvd31 Cd, Dvd Audio player
Panasonic ScH25 vertical mini Cd stereo with remote.
Toshiba SRF102 turntable
Technics SL-PD607 Mash 4dac carousel
Integra DPS 6.5 Dvd Audio, video SACD universal player
Pioneer Dv578a universal player
Oppo dv981hd universal player
Technics sl-d2 turntable
Toshiba hda2 hddvd player
Yamaha dvd-c950 Dvd Audio video SACD carousel
Kenwood km105 amp
Realistic 10 band graphic led EQ
Sony cmtbx1 micro hifi
Technics SU G90 integrated amp
Varied 2ch-7.1ch Denon, Sony and Yamaha receivers from late 90s through past decade
My goodwill had 1 speaker a sub with holes in the surround
1:36 I definitely test equipment first before buying it at thrift stores (especially since a lot of thrift stores offer no returns on electronics) and I even created a little kit for my backpack which includes a pair of headphones, a CD-R with music, a pre-recorded cassette tape, a multi-volt AC adaptor (for some small speaker units that may be missing their original cords and plugs), a light-up magnifying glass (to inspect equipment, to check for scratches on records, to read CD spines more clearly, etc.), a microfiber cleaning cloth (to see if scuffs can be wiped clean or if they are permanent), etc.
Sometimes I'll even confirm with the manager or with some fellow shoppers as witnesses that my testing kit gear belongs to me and not the store just to avoid any confusion or false accusations of theft.
Hi Mike,
Do you still own the Sony SCD-CE595 CD/SACD player? I just bought one from my Tech about a month ago. It’s actually a very nice player. I use hybrid and single-layer SACDs. RCAs out to my preamp and glass Toslink to my DAC for playing CDs.
PS - I have found one Goodwill that stocks stereo and computer hardware.
I gave it to a friend who was specifically looking for an SACD player to experiment with. I really enjoyed it though. Great player!
Aren’t you The Esoteric🤣.
Lol
I assume there has always been Audio gear at thrift stores. If so, I kick myself for not hitting thrift stores in the late 70s onwards as my interest in audio tech increased as a teen, 20 something.
Also yard, estate sales would've been awesome for 60s, 70s used gear from the late 70s through the 80s and 90s.
Once I had the cash and ability to drive circa 1983+, all the 70s, early 80s gear I missed out on...
I wish I had been around back then to reap the benefit
i just bought a nakamichi rx 505 for 20$ at goodwill and sold it today on ebay for $1,500 yeah!
That is an awesome flip!
If those speakers go down to 25 hz you don't need a sub woofer lol.
Where do you live, been going to Goodwill for 30yrs. Not once have I seen that much decent audio.
Colorado
I've got $8000 worth of gear for about $800 from Goodwill.
lmao i have the same french made knife
I can't find anything at Goodwill lol
Try other thrift stores. You may have to make a little road trip and visit several ones.
After all that, you didn't even demo the system for us??
My goodwill has only clothes😢
I got a Panamax power conditioner that goes for 400 for 5 bucks at a good will
Niceeee!
@@mykandrew marketplace is also a good place to check. I just grabbed a 200 paradigm center channel for 20
My goodwill sucks and has nothing cool to offer
Travel to others, it might be wiorth the trip.
@@mykandrew yeah that’s hard for me to do because I have travel anxiety and the word is worth not wiorth
@@erictorres4889 im sorry to hear that, I am the same way. I do not like leaving the house for long periods of time.
7:23 THATS WAY TOO MUCH BARE CABLE EXPOSED, short circuit risk, you shouldnt be able to see any cooper when cables are connected.
That Sony receiver is junk !
It really is lol 😆
Not worth that
This was mostly waisted "ink". Why spend more than a minute dusting off the outside of an amp before hooking it up
and confirming whether or not it works? This dude obviously don't have a clue about actually diagnosing and repairing
an amplifier or anything else for that matter and would be better off making videos on "auto detailing".
