How to Paint a MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE in ACRYLICS

  • Mountains are one of my favourite subjects to paint and it’s also a good subject to paint if you are learning to paint landscapes as it’s much easier to see the different tones and values in the scene you are painting.
    I normally paint artworks in oils but I’ve had a few requests for me to do a painting tutorial using acrylics so this is for the acrylic painters. However, if you are an oil painter you still may find this painting tutorial useful as the principles of colour and tone are the same.
    For some people painting in oils is not practical, so I wanted to show you that you can still get some good results with acrylics. Also, the fact that they dry very quickly can be an advantage.
    In this painting tutorial, I cover the step-by-step process of how I painted this mountain landscape in acrylics. I will also cover the following:
    Composition
    Colours
    Brushes
    Blocking in the painting
    Adding details
    Final details
    If you would like to paint along with this, check out the link below for the written notes that accompany this video. Feel free to copy the painting and copy / use the reference photos that are in the written tutorial.

    Hey, Samuel!
    Great video, and very nice painting. It looks like you are painting with oils, the way you apply the painting on the canvas. Did you use any spesiel kind of medium to extend the drying time? I paint with oils and acryics. Sometime I block in with acrylics, and paint oils over. How many years have you been painting, and how many paintings have you sold so far in your career?
    Do you paint after your own imagination, or do you always have a reference photo at hand?
    Keep up the great work
    Greetings from Norway
    Eleo

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Eleo, I didn’t use any kind of medium to extend the drying time just water. Actually this is the first acrylic painting I’ve done in ten years! I have been painting on and off my whole life and have been painting consistently for the last ten years. I have sold many paintings. All my paintings are either form life or photos or both. I plan all the compositions whenever I do studio paintings and I use plein air studies, colour studies and photos as reference.

    • @eleojay401
      @eleojay401 5 років тому

      Yes, plein air studies is something I need to try out, but my colour mixing is not yet at the level it needs to be to take that jump. I work slow, even with acrylics, which is frustating (haha).
      I prefer to build up a landscape from my imagination, but sometimes I use reference photos, especially when its a great composition and the photo is taken by myself. One day I will share with you what I have created, because you (and a few other youtube painters) are the reason for my progress and my understanding of the art.
      Wish you the best.

    Nice as usual Sam, I find it hard to understand the amount of colours you use to tint.
    Any chance you could whip up your personal colour wheel to make it easier for us mere mortals ??

      Thanks David. I intend to make a video on colour mixing, just trying to figure out how to make it a simple as possible as I don't think colour theory needs to be difficult. Have you ever tried water mixable oils, you don't need turps for these? Oils are so nice to paint with 😀

      @@davemalt2451 Water mixable oils are fine for painting on boards, they behave like oils paints but you can thin them with water and wash your brushes with washing-up liquid. For me water mixable oils were a good transition to oils paints. I personally find oils much easier to paint with.

    I love your demonstration of values by making it black and white, I find it helps me a lot. Did you learn it from someone, or did you just figure it out yourself? Just curious because I haven’t seen anyone else on YT explain it like that.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  5 років тому +2

      Thanks. I have had help along the way especially as I have never been to art school. I was mentored by Andrew Tischler a few years ago and then a lot of what I learned was through plein air painting. Things just clicked when I was outdoors in nature painting from life and I had tons of lightbulb moments. I can't remember where I found out about the switching the photo to black and white to see the values thing, it may have been artist Richard Robinson who told me that, again on a plein air painting trip. Much of what I have learned is through trial and error, other artists including their videos and plein air painting which really has been one of the most beneficial practices in my whole art career. It's fun as well as I love being outside in the sun painting 😀

    Hi Samuel, do you have many acrylic paintings on your patreon? I tried your patreon for a month but found it wasn’t for me since I lack the patience you have of stopping for days waiting on things to dry. I think this is because I’m in the learning stage and am more interested in shorter paintings so I can complete them for the practice to improve. Also, I don’t work so I have more time then the average person I suppose. For these reasons I have found all a-prima painting and acrylics more suited for me

    Super painting, Sam. Given the speed that acrylics dry have you ever tried using any of the extenders to lengthen the drying time? I've used Golden soft body acrylics with extenders several times in Plein Air. They seem to stay wet longer which is good when you're outside and need that little bit of extra time.

    Hello Samuel. I'm an oil painter in Alaska but have lately been flirting with the idea of switching to acrylics due to poor ventalation in my current living situation. Being in Alaska the winter is 8 months long anmakes it near impossible to use oils since I can't just simply open up windows for fresh air. So acrylics make sense. My questions are what brand of acrylics do you recommend for realistic acrylic landscapes. I was looking at winsor and newton, and golden acrylics. Also, do you mix them with water or gels mediums? I dislike watercolor looks and am afraid to mix water into it. Or do you paint acrylics straght out of the tube? Btw, my name is also Sam.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Sam, I can see the issue you are having, even in my studio I have to have the windows shut in winter as it's cold (but nothing like Alaska). I have found that I have had headaches from painting with no ventilation.
      With regards to acrylics I got to be honest I don't paint with them that often and don't use any particular brand. The acrylic painting in this video was the first one I had done in about 15 years! I had a few of my subscribers request it. If it was a choice of using acrylics or not painting at all I'd use acrylics.
      Have you tried using gouache paints at all? I tried using them a couple of weeks ago and was quite pleased with the results, they're like opaque watercolours but you can get some pretty decent results with them.
      One other thing you could try with oils is use a medium like Oleogel as I am pretty sure it's non toxic. You can thin your paint with it. I hope this helps. I bet there must be loads of epic landscapes to paint in Alaska. Cheers. Sam

    Thanks for another great video Sam - I'm currently enjoying painting along to one of your earlier ones. Do you have slightly larger versions of the reference photos on your blog?

      Are you a beginner at painting? Whilst I am mostly an oil painter I have had many requests to do acrylic paintings as well, so I have ordered myself some acrylic paints and brushes. Stay tuned, I'll be making some acrylic landscape painting videos 😀
