    Spent a week here in August 2004 with my wife and two sons age 3 years and the other 4 months old at the time. They are 19 and 21 now. The place was deserted and only two families in occupation mine and one other. Surprised it took that long to knock it down. Highlight of the week was watching Amir Khan win a silver medal at the Olympics on tv in the chalet. The place was utterly deserted.

      Great memories.
      The camp has now been completely rebuilt with modern accommodation and facilities.
      As of writing it has still not been completed.

    I worked at the camp for two seasons in the late 80's when I was about 17 or 18 best times of my life. Shed a tear when I watched this video. Boy could I tell you some stories about this place.Gone but most definitely not forgotten

    I've been in that pool, about 1984. My family stayed on the campsite next door, and you could pay to use the pool.

      The little campsite next door is still there . But Atherfield bay site has been completely rebuilt from scratch.

      @@ISLEOFWIGHTARCHIVE I looked the other day, and it said it's been closed down. It was a very nice campsite, with great amenities and we met so many nice people there. Great memories. We'd go out for the day, and driving back was so much fun. Landmarks to see along the route, like Brading Wax museum all lit up, the lights from Sandown sea front, the lights that lit up Blackgang Chine......I can't believe the island has become so unloved and run down. Such a shame.

      I worked there in 1963 with Roy Baraclough. He was bar entertainer and I was a waitress.

    Went here on a school trip in the early 70’s , sad to see it looking like this , actually visited the site a few years ago whilst on holiday , very neglected

      The site has been completely demolished and removed a couple of years ago now.
      A new holiday complex is almost near completion on the same site.

    I'm still hoping one day you'll find footage from the 80s of sandown bay holiday park. The one where they've now sold the chalets as time share places now. Also footage of Browns and the boating lake when it was boating lake. And had the small but quality arcade the otherside.
    Me and my cousin said we'd be back one day to run that arcade. Mainly because I saw the person working there one day open a machine with his keys and click up free credits to play the star wars cab. I was in awe.
    It never happened. Place shut and got knocked down before we got old. He went on to be a Doctor, I went on to be an IT engineer :). I'm the only one that still has an interest in old arcade machines from the 80s and early 90s.

    I spent a week there with the school in the early 50s, there were no brick chalets then.

    Just been looking at some photos of this before it was all bulldozed - maybe the same year.
    Must have been a great place in its glory days - opened inn 1935 and closed 2007!
    I remember walking by these buildings on one of my early visits to the island around 2005/6/7 when it was still being used - though maybe just as a caravan site. I'm sure some of the buildings were occupied. The coastal path was very close to the edge and had moved back further when I returned the following year.
    This mass now shows as a white mass on the latest google map.
    Thankfully plans to develop it into a £10 million holiday park just a few years ago (2014) were blocked by the Council - no telling how long it would have lasted.
    This is a very long, detailed video - well I guess it was your last chance too get some footage. I would have done the same (only with photos).

      The council haven't blocked any redevelopment as the new camp is well underway in being built, but that's for a future film.

      Oh? Well this was an old article I read. I see it's from 2015. I still have it onscreen right now:

      its now completely been demolished and the site has been cleared , only the tennis courts remain since this was filmed.

    • @garethbramley1
      @garethbramley1 3 роки тому

      That's correct - and also a fairly recent dwelling-house just to the right of them - though I guess this was nothing to do with the holiday camp.
      You can also clearly see that another building just below this house, and nearer the cliff, has also been removed.
      Also still standing is the 'L'-shaped building to the West side of the Chine.

    AND still this place is derelict...are they ever gonna do anything with it? Then again, to be honest - I guess that adds to it's charm. It's a sorry sight but wouldn't be the same without it.

    • @ISLEOFWIGHTARCHIVE
      @ISLEOFWIGHTARCHIVE  7 років тому +1

      LauraDiana it's not derelict. It's all been demolished and cleared as of 2017. A new camp complex will replace it

    Really wish I had the opportunity to explore this place more before it got demolished. Does anyone have any information about the new complex they're building there?
