  • Hi all Wolf Lord Rho here!
    Today we begin our next Primarch week special... Magnus the Red Week! And where better to begin then by discussing how Magnus was always his own worst enemy...
    Spoiler Warning to begin! The events we are discussing today are from the Horus Heresy Primarch Series novel "Magnus the Red: The Master of Prospero" by Graham McNeill. As always I really recommend you read the stories for yourself first. As that's the best way to enjoy the lore for yourself! Not only that we help to support the great Games Workshop and Black Library. Because without them we don't have this amazing lore to talk about! Link: www.blacklibrary.com/the-horu...

    Perturabo is an often misunderstood character, imo. He's far more similar to Magnus than most people seem to think. They both chafe under the Great Crusade, because their first priorities were on intellectual pursuits. In Magnus case, he was obsessed with psychic phenomena and the warp, in Perturabo's case, his greatest hope throughout his life was to engineer a better future for humanity.
    Later in the novel, Perturabo tells Magnus that he consider Magnus to be his favorite brother, and worried about what would happen if the Imperium was to lose him. I honestly think Magnus and Perturabo were on the same level of Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus, even if there hasn't been a moment between them along the lines of the forging of Worldbreaker and Fireblade.

    It’s not just arrogance, it’s curiosity. He represents curiosity and the search for knowledge. He knows there is something more in the warp. He knows there are things about it his father is hiding. From his perspective, he should find out what is going on there. He was no reason not to delve into the warp, only that an authority figure said no, but offered no explanation. Come on, any person who is smart and curious is going to try and figure out the why, probably by doing the very thing. This is why parents need to explain things to their kids and teach them the meaning behind rules, not just set a bunch of arbitrary limits that later they realize were bs. That kinda feels like magnus. A smart curious rebellious teen who is learning things for himself because his conservative dad never taught him anything just said “no, because I said so”. Magnus always let his curiosity and overconfidence, ignore the possible negative outcomes. always XD
    He always knew the negative consequences for his actions. but downplayed them.
    And I think Perturabo's action in this case was on point. He didn't knew Magnus better than the emperor. But he understood him better , and this proves it. He never tried to nullify or disown Magnus, but showed him that he would sacrifice a lot in order to prevent him from going down the wrong path. (remember that when he destroyed the "sextant", he crushed other of his own irreplaceable masterpieces that where on that table)
    After this Magnus actually dials down on his more unbound actions until the council of Nikea.
    And this is a passage that exemplifies why I think "hammer of Olympia" novel falls horribly short. You can see more of the personality and what makes Perturabo tick in "Master of Prospero" than in his own novel.

    Magnus may have been his worse enemy but I do not see any other way, in hi shoes, any of his bothers could have acted. The ruinous powers are devious and prepared his path before he was born. He HAD to do what it did to save his legion or he would have ended like his nameless 2 brothers. He did it for his thousand sons, which literally were neve more then a few thousand because of the curse.
    Fulgrim did the same, trying to be the BEST to make up for the size of his legion. Even Sanguinius had to hide the genetic failing of his sons from the Emperor and his brothers.
    Like Angron was doomed by the Nail, Maguns was doomed by the flaw in his legion, Fulgrim was doomed by the urgency to prove himself; behind this is the destructive will of the warp, like a small dot that slowly erodes the mountain. You can't defeat the ruinous powers playing at their game, something that even the Emperor had to learn.

    The more I think about Magnus fall. Given the nature of what the Emperor has intended for him. Magnus should have been the Number 1 Primarch he hunted for. I feel like if he spent time with their long distances conversations explaining there’s something in the Warp coming for you and only after I train you in person will you be capable of facing it. He would have naturally avoided going too deep.
    Instead he tried to wield the warp to show his father how worthy he was and as a result helped permanently maim the Imperium.

      Similarly, after Nikea, the Emperor should have taken Magnus back to Terra to help with the Webway project; that way he could’ve kept an eye on him, would’ve had a strong asset in helping with the construction (plus as he always intended to plug Magnus into the Golden Throne, he would’ve had him on hand to do just that in case anything went wrong) and could’ve used it as a way to further placate the anti-psyker primarchs by telling them he’s dragging Magnus back to Terra as punishment so he can keep an eye on him. Plus he would’ve been able to use it to bring some Thousand Sons to Terra who like Magnus would’ve been useful in helping build the Webway portal and would’ve served as a good anti-daemon precaution in case things went wrong (and worst case they could’ve also been plugged into the Throne to give it a temporary boost).

    Magnus, much though I still admire and like him in many ways, really was his own undoing. His genuine love for his brothers and his hope for the psychic future of humanity were wonderful traits, and were the Warp even slightly less dangerous-- had the horrors seeded by the War in Heaven and spawned from the souls of Men and Eldar been even slightly less aware and malevolent-- his fascination with it and determination to study it in spite of admonishment could've been seen as just the mischievous disobedience of an eager child looking to learn new things and impress his brothers and father. But it wasn't, and so his curiosity and mild disobedience were nursed by T'zeentch with care into obsession, arrogance, and a willingness to even manipulate his closest brothers to avoid having to give up on his plans. So many times, he was told the hard truths (like here!), but was too convinced of his own rightness to hear them.
    I don't even believe the Emperor would have maintained his ban on psychic studies for long after the end of the Crusade, as he would have finished the webway project and so he would have been able to devote time with Magnus to the study of how to develop humanity as a psychic race without worry about the stability and safety of every aspect of the Imperium and travel within it. The bittersweetness of the lore is as much because of how close things came to being made truly good for peaceful races as it is because of how grim things now are.

    • @theroadstopshere
      @theroadstopshere 3 роки тому +1

      @@brigidtheirish Honestly I don't really disagree with you there, but I think that a key difference between the Emperor's self-assuredness and Magnus's was that the Big E genuinely did see just about everything there was to see about chaos and the Warp, and only really started to act in the universe a very long time after his awakening-- not to mention that by his nature he's less of a vulnerable individual and more an amalgamated and ritually-focused mass of hundreds, maybe thousands of souls. Whereas Magnus was acting with similar cockiness and confidence, and even more direct manipulation (as here) from a relatively much younger age and with far less actual experience and knowledge. Sure, the traits the Big E designed him for should be expected to be prevalent, but I can't help but feel like the taunts, encouragement, and prodding he received from warp entities and both directly and indirectly via T'zeentch made him feel and act far more arrogant and knowledgeable than he might have otherwise. But then, that's just my reading of the lore, who knows how Magnus would have turned out if Chaos hadn't been gunning for him right from the start 🤷 maybe his natural dominance over the Warp and rulership of Prospero would have led to those traits growing to unhealthy degrees anyways! Certainly agree he probably would've wound up showing some of his father's flaws regardless!

      @theroadstopshere 3 роки тому +1

      @@brigidtheirish Yeah, fully agreed... I get that GW has been leaning more into the Imperium being the 'good guys' with the return of Guilliman and his more idealistic visions for humanity, but the fact that the fallen Primarchs (and renegade/fallen servants of the Imperium) all had their reasons and weren't just cartoonish villains was one of the strongest parts of the setting, and it feels like that's been lost somewhat recently. I'd much rather see a more nuanced take on Magnus, maybe with some of his more noble shards involved, and tbh all the fallen Primarchs. I'd love to hear Perturabo's thoughts on his daemonhood and the Warp now, or Lorgar's feelings on what the Emperor has become and how his godhood compares to that of Chaos.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 3 роки тому +1

      @@theroadstopshere I'm kinda upset that they shattered Magnus's soul in the first place, leaving a cartoon villain behind. I'd like to see him chafing under Tzeench's rule, wanting to rebel but probably not *able* to directly, unlike before where he *didn't* want to rebel but was tricked into it (along with letting his massive ego get the best of him). And, yeah, some stuff on Perturabo, definitely. He usually comes across as petulant in the fandom (not without reason), but there's a really good character in there who was treated *very* badly. Heck. I'd like to see how Mortarian is taking daemonhood. Dude was an asshole even before the heresy, but he's also the primarch who was the *least* willing participant in his own fall.

    Was Magnus’ reason for not telling Perturabo what the device did because he knew it was wrong, or because he was worried Pert would have refused to make it if he knew? Remember, one of his reasons for trying to contact the Emperor to warn him about Horus in the manner he did instead of using an astropath or hopping onto the Photep and going in person was that he wanted to use it as a way to prove he was right about psykers and Nikea was a mistake, so it would be in keeping with his character for him to want to wait to say what the device did until after it was built and he could ‘show’ that it was safe.
    It’s probably not surprising that Perturabo and Magnus were close considering the role of meat grinder siege expert was something forced upon Perturabo; he wanted to be an artisan and builder and scholar so it shouldn’t really be that surprising that he got along well with the brother who was the biggest nerd of the whole fraternity, and their scholarly persists being in different areas meant there wasn’t much chance of it sparking a rivalry between them.

      @@markrtoffeeman The Emperor betrayed us. He sent his puppies, his golden boys, and his mute girls to deal with us instead of just dealing with us himself. He knew what Leman Russ would do and that even if Horus had not played the Wolf King like a harp, he'd overstep his authority.

      Magnus' only flaw was he was too kind and forgiving, always turning the other cheek no matter how terrible the provocation. He needed to learn that the Imperium weren't rational human beings you can reason with, but rabid animals that needed to be put down. I fear even now, his kind nature will be his undoing.

    I really liked this video. It shows a Pertaraubo that trusted the Emperor and that at some point he and the Emperor must have talked about the warp. And that he and magnus had discussed it before too. Pertaraubo is definitely not like many of the loyalists who didn’t really know anything if at all about the warp. And that he knows there are things the Emperor wouldn’t look at.
    I get it that he thinks of the emperor as a liar and a tyrant later on. But this would almost show a Pertaraubo that could be forgiven for Olympia. And also wouldnt turn to chaos to become a daemon Primarch. At the close of the heresy he would be utterly alone because of his traitorous brethren becoming lost and damned. I sincerely wonder if he would return to the emperors side. I wonder what a conversation would be like between him and Guillemen if he wasn’t a daemon primarch in 40K.

    As I was thinking it you went right to the heart of it. Did Magnus ever have another path?

    Magnus really was a good brother and didn't hate anyone. He started to hate Konrad after his brother tried to provoke him. Mortarian and Russ hated him cause he used Psyker powers and for no other reason. His arrogance did lead to his manipulation and downfall by Tzeentch though.

    Magnus is an impertinent fool. He wouldnt listen even if the warp itself would come and said to him "we are going to ruin your life,red boi",that basically happened and he WOULDNT LISTEN!

    *bong hit* Like... what if, his name is really "Magnus the Read" but we've been spelling it wrong because we've been judging him by the color of his skin instead of his intelligence?

    If the Emperor had been open to Magnus about the warp and spent time with him exploring those boundries together, I think Magnus would have made the right choices. Instead he was left ignorant to what he was made for. That's just... stupid on the Emperors part to put it bluntly.

    16:16 not inevitable, but not surprising. Magnus was too predictable. A perfect game piece. Sadly, Teetztch understood humanity more than Big E.

    i wonder what would have happened if the emperor had teach magnus to use the warp responsible instead of not use it and ignore it and i forbid it
    sounds a bit like telling a kid to not push the read Butten and reminding constant it exist and constant teling him not to push it than be surprise the kid he pushes it when you dont look
