What I love about Unpacking, having only first impressions to go off, is that it focuses on the best part of the Sims i.e. Building and placing where your stuff is gonna go, and just nails that satisfying feeling of a freshly made room.
Love these bite sized Developer Breakdowns, so much awesome info, and Unpacking is such a great game to feature. Good work giving us what we want NoClip!
I've been playing this game on my Switch for some time now, about 10-30 minutes when I can get to play it, the game is really special and chilling and it surprised when I noticed it had some story, I thought it was something like Townscaper at first time, a game just to relax and have some mindless fun. Thank you for covering this game!
I haven't played this yet but I've intended to since it's release. It's absolutely my type of game. One of them, anyway. Once things settle down in my life enough (or stresses me out even more that I desperately reach for a chill out game), I will dive into this. I appreciate the many nuances discussed in the video and the amount of thought that went into the game. I enjoyed this video. But as happy as I am for the creators, I still think about The Escapist's Extra Punctuation video that talks about this game and the many blatant issues with the mobile game market (and let's face it, the issues aren't necessarily exclusive to mobile gaming anymore...). I feel for the countless devs out there that put in the genuine leg work to make something true to themselves and their talent, only to subsequently have some mindless jerk copy and paste their work in such empty attempts to cash in on someone else's labor.
Just found this after playing this game. Spoilers ahead, the moment that got me the most was when the second partner moves in. In the bedroom there were two large objects (a plant and bedside table) that wouldn't both fit in the room on the other person's bedside table. I realized the sun shined on what I imagined was my bedside table the most and so I put the plant on my empty bedside table. I just felt the moment perfectly mirrored the diploma but with a happier resolution.
Loved this, Unpacking is such a beautiful game and I had no idea how much complexity went into it. Just to share a favorite tiny detail similar to Danny’s diploma discovery, after the main character moves back home, there are several pictures you can pin to your childhood room’s cork board. One is pretty clearly a couple… and the game won’t let you move to the next level if it stays on the cork board. I interpreted that as a reminder of the breakup that prompted the move back home, so my resting place for that photo was at the back of the cupboard, out of sight.
Haven't played it myself but watching Many A True Nerd play a significant portion was delightful. After a few levels he came to the sudden realisation that the timeline in-game matches his own past. There was a quote something along the lines of "This is my life, if I was a woman.". That realisation from the initial level informed how he approached later levels, as he went "What was I doing in (month, year)?", and inferred item placement on not just how he prefers now, but also past experience from (for example) sharing a flat for the first time. So wholesome and well worth a watch.
This is a quality episode. I love the way Developer Breakdowns deal with the actual game creation. Rather than just VERY high level discussions that ONLY talk about Game Design and nothing else.
a treat to watch. thanks wren and tim for lending their perspective! between noclip, peoplemakesgames, GMTK, agamescout (speaking from my subscription list) it feels like independent video game journalism is as spritely and cogent as ever.
Developer breakdown suggestion - "Developer Breakdown of the accessibility features system's in Horizon Forbidden West ". HFW has a lot of nice systems (slowing down the world when changing the weapons, auto pick up, etc) that you can customize to your hearts content. The system might not have been so simple to implement, otherwise they could have added that to Horizon Zero Dawn fairly easily. You can change the values anytime and the world/ systems update along with it, without requiring a re-load / restart of the system. This suggests the systems are baked into the world / engine.
A Developer Break Down on the rhythm mechanics of Metal: Hellsinger would be super cool, I'd love to know what challenges that team faced when designing the combat.
I love this game so much. I started playing expecting a wholesome game, just placing objects in a level. Didn't expect to get a hidden deep narrative, making me feel things. Especially that diploma stuff, good lord, I have a recording of my gameplay, and everyone came watching because they got stuck with that moment too. It's so amazing.
yeah exactly, the time of day thing i kinda recognised but the dinged artwork by the fridge and reduced cars at night are awesome touches. The sound design and narrative effect in this game are so good.
Great interview for a great game. I really did enjoy the narrative and it 100% succeeded in not giving any rushed or stressful feelings. I need another one... with coop! (That... would probably then add stress, hehe)
I love this game and I wish there were more levels! I'll pay for DLCs!!! Also, fun fact... I did put the electric kettle on the stove-top. I was from Malaysia but have lived in the US for 10 years so it's clear to me that my worldview has changed since being here. lol
I’ve played/watched this game so many times and there’s still so many amazing little details and features I hadn’t noticed. Such an incredibly detailed game
I love these video they remind me 9f the old Noclip sessions. Idk if this game is my thing or not but I'll give it a shot especially since it's on game pass. I know my girlfriend will probably love it.
This was a nice interview. As a suggestion: you should really invest in actual subtitles instead of the UA-cam-generated ones. That would be such a step up. Auto-subtitles have quite poor readability.

Advancing the time based on how much you've unpacked is a brilliant design decision.

The game seems simple at first but all the small details and care put into it make it something really special

I had zero idea that this has story elements. That makes me 500% more interested in the game.
And they're really good!
They have a very clever way of telling you the story. It is the best part of the game imo.
Oh it’s Fantastic and genuinely made me cry like a lot. This game is surprisingly great and really shocked me

I think something like this should be on Noclip main channel, respectfully I like the video.
The cat in the hat book being called Hat Feline is adorable!

Oh wow, this game is filled with so many thoughtful details. Fantastic video!

Wonderful little breakdown of a really fun game!
already was amazed by this game, this vid just deepens the respect

I've played this game over and over. This whole time I thought that was a window and it was night time XD
This was fantastic. Amazing game too, one of my favorites in years.
They really seem to be the best people. Great interview.
"This is a simple game" after explaining just how many things they had to take in consideration haha
They should work on the next Shenmue!
I love the intro graphics!

Fantastic and engaging stuff. Keep them coming
Never heard of that game before. It looks really good and relaxing. There are so many details that make the package look very well polished
I love this series so much.

I absolutely LOVED this game and the story-- it was so cute and subtle.
I'm just pissed I couldn't store my pans in the oven.
This was just absolutely wonderful!!!
Awesome, my friend. 😍💕 Thanks for sharing. 👍 Have a good day. 🤗✨
Awesome new video!
Great commentary, amazing game. I am just happy, that I’ve finished it already, because this was so many spoilers!
