People ask us all the time what gauge we recommend for a given guitar, and the truth is, there's no one correct answer. String gauges depend way more on the player than they do on the guitar. That said, of course we have our favorite ways to set up different guitars for different purposes, so in this series, Scott is sharing his favorite string gauges for a couple of different types of guitars, and today he's going over his favorite strings for semi-hollow and hollow-body guitars.

Stringjoy subbed after you said youre not trying to make everything in your collection play right down the middlr and that you prefer the little bit of fight, in my opinion thats the mark of a true expert!
I know this has been up a while but just stumbled across this video the other day and ordered a custom signature set with the gauges you specified. Came in today and replaced the 10s on my cheap firefly semi hollow. It is like an entirely different instrument! Loads more resonance and warmth than I had before. Stringjoy will be my go to from now on.

For me when it comes to strings it's about feel I don't like rounds I don't like the feel of them I don't like the sound of them I hate the squeaking I use flats Thomastik flats

Watched this vid with my Epiphone ES335 Pro in mind.
Usual strings just didn't seem to cut it. Watched this vid and immediately ordered a couple of Custom Signatures; 010, .013, .017, .026w, .036, .048 nickel wounds.
Match made in heaven. Really. Couldn't be happier. Chords, lead and everything in between.

It's mostly for slide actually!
Some people also use them for drop tuning so they can get the same tension when they play. Otherwise they can be flabby. - I started off on bass but write on acoustic. So thicker gauges on electric feel more natural to me when bouncing between instruments. Otherwise they feel like too floppy and don't bounce back from attacks in the way I expect. ( I know Stevie Ray Vaughn went up to 17's at one point).

On my ibanez 335 i use 50-11 flatwounds, with a wound third and the bass and low mids of the thing are incredible
Great sound! I play a full hollowbody now and slowly learning what sound I like. 12 flats were awesome amplified but meh acoustic when practicing at night. Currently 10s roundwound and looking for more umph in the low E, A, D strings. Everyone's trying to convince me to go to 9s but I'm thinking 11s or your 11.5s!

Put the Stringjoy Broadways in the gauges suggested in this video on my seven sound Dean Palomino and really, really like the playing feel and tone the guitar now has. Love the round wound Broadways on this guitar and also put a Classic Medium Gauge (11-48) set of Broadways on my Fender Johnny Marr Jaguar - Love it!
Just installed 10/46, Ibanez af75, this is as low as I would go, but, love to bend a little.
I enjoy thicker strings for tuning stability, and a more acoustic like sound
The Epi Casino (hollow-body guitar) comes with 10s. I prefer 9s for standard tuning. 10s and above for drop tuning. And Elixir polyweb/nanoweb strings for longer-lasting, easy-sliding and jingle-jangle tone.
Great job. Once I went to .11's there was no going back...for the same reasons stated in this video. I've been using D' Addario 11-49 since the 90's...it may be time to check you guys out!!

Do you guys make flatwound strings? I couldn't find any on your site..... I just tried a set of D'Addario ECG24 Chromes Flat wound 11-50 (with a wound G) on a Tele and it sounds SO much more balanced. The flat wounds also seemed to tame the snarky Tele pickup in a nice gentle way. - Now I'd like to throw a set on my Gretsch. But at $15/pack it's going to get expensive if I fall in love with them and put them on the rest of my guitars. (Finding a less expensive, bulk alternative would be really nice).

Can I use acoustic strings on a hollow body? Gibson ES-175 I usually use 10's because my hands hurt (arthritis) and I like blues, jazz. I thought of going to 12's to get a thicker tone but, my hands might not like that.
I just bought a Hanstrom Viking 2 and I’m into playing rockabilly with it. What is your recommendation for string string combinations? Also, I just got a gold top Les Paul standard with P90 50s model. What can you recommend for that? Lastly, I have a Stratocaster by fender player series
I'd like to put locking tuners on my thin semi hollow body Ibanez Qm93FM. Are their reason why I you would or would not recommend doing so?
Hey Scott! I'm new to semi-hollow body guitars, and just purchased a new Ibanez AS83 (335 style). What is the "normal" set of strings that these type guitars come with? Reason I ask, is because the AS83 came with a set of 10-13-17-30-40-52 strings, typically referred to as "light top, heavy bottom". I had to get out my digital calipers to confirm the gauges. I really like the feel of this set, but was curious what the "norm" is? Thanks!
Hey Tom, good to hear from you! Most guitars come stock with 9s, occasionally 10s. This is what they're set up for from the factory. I've never completely understood why, but I've heard it's so they play really smooth and easy when you pick one up at Guitar Center...
I find it pretty interesting they came with LT/HBs, but I definitely don't think that's a bad choice for an AS83, if you like those, keep rocking 'em!
I use your 11-50 w/wound 3rd on all my guitars, semi-hollow included.
That's an excellent choice if you ask me!
Defiantly right using 11.5 on an archtop , Chuck Berry used 11.5's BB King also used 11.5 but as he got older started using 9's , George Benson used 13's . On a Les Paul 13 or 14's are the best .
You could put flatwound strings on it to kill the top end altogether and get some more mud.

Hey Scott, will you ever produce coated strings? Because my sweat is toxic and I destroy uncoated strings in about one hour of playing
It's kinda doubtful to be honest. We find that our strings when cared for with our Natural String Conditioner before and after playing last as long or longer than coated strings, and they sound better too.
I was looking for a brand recommendation, not necessarily your own either

I'm biased here, but I say go for it!
i have corpol tunel in both wrists, i couldn't go above 10, and even that is hell compared to nylon, but i can't afford nylon, If the guitar is handmade its going to be playable, or well made, i get tone from pick gage, boostpedals/preamps, tubes, or mic choice, and it is hollowbody, difficult to play guitar, gets in the way of gypsy jazz arpeggios, for m.e, i also pick near the bridge mostly, and never close to the neck, or switch between bridge and first pickup, for dynamics, 12 is insane, some use 13, but they are like pat matheny or george benson, they don't know about boostpedals or real jazz picks. some jazz musicians have an inverted way of making music, when in their own mind they think they are following rules, traditions, conventions out of respect, when in reality true tone is overlooked not persued, 432hz gives more overtones, and helps stranger chords, sound more sound, so it opens up music, so i practice in 432hz and performe in both 440hz and 432hz, but no one makes a 528hz guitar, so i don't understand how anyone can sleep at night. my guitar teacher said he didn't like wound 3rd, but i don't over bend my vibratos, i am more subtle in that, and wound 3rds sound better in the mix, sometimes a non wound 3rd can sound like a steel pan, and is difficult to fix in the mix, or encourages me to be more careful and less hot which defeats the purpose. i guess if you play hot you should use flat, and if you play sweet you should play bright, but i like both, of best worlds at same time... epiphones are less playable than gibsons and handmade guitars because they are made in a factory, (by slaves) the extra playablility can help free your mind, or lead to discoveries, i have trouble being a musician with or without the playablitlity, i rebel against all guitars that lack even a slight amount of playability, i use the Loar guitar, its playable and sounds good but the neck feels thin like a toothpick and the guitar is made in china and feels like its poisoning me everytime i play, i'm afraid of my guitar but can't sell it off, ibanezes are playable, but i think its important to support your local luthier, that way you have the playability and the sound and probably otherthings that are good. i'm afraid of 11s, its too much for me. even 10s are a stress. i'm finally going to try 9s but i'm insecure about how thin they are, i will try 9.5s but not everyone makes that size, but i'm sure its the perfect size for me, i am still sceptical.
How to properly stretch your guitar strings?

They need to be stretched out on the instrument themselves-strings are already stretched when they're being wound, but once they get strung up they need it again.

Wounds are strings
Most of the jazz guys use 12 gauge FLATWOUNDS. Normal roundwound sound terrible for jazz.
For sure, Flatwounds are more popular for jazz. Roundwounds don't sound "terrible for jazz" though, it's all about how you use them and how it informs your style.

According to your performance it is audible that you are barely pulling this gauge. I still can't understand those "fighting with your instrument" approach and this videos proves that there is no reason to put heavy gauges at any electric guitar at all. Performance are got worse, those little missed intonations hurt ears and not clear chords and picking are the final stop at this poor performance by "fighting" concept.

Well. I bought some elixirs acoustic guitar strings and I put them on my guild 1959 t100 a extra pair and the 5th string got stuck it didn’t go through so what do you recommend I’m looking for something vintage sounding thanks 😯
