A day later the United States declares war on the Japanese Empire and Germany comes to their defence by declaring war on the US. -(8th December 1941 - 8th March 1942) Japan sweeps down through the Philippines, British Malaya, the Dutch East Indies and more of Eastern China. -(1st January 1942) The United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and China sign the "Declaration of the United Nations". -(12th - 28th May 1942) Germany attacks Kharkov as part of Operation Fredericus and are successful, moving down into the Caucus oil fields. -(25th August 1942) Date in this video is technically wrong, Battle of Stalingrad begins on this day, the bloodiest battle in all of military history. Cherbourg and Brittany are quickly liberated by American forces, then Paris on the 25th August. -(17th July 1944) Soviet troops cross the Polish border and begin to liberate the country slowly. *Timeline for anyone looking to study or just follow along:*
-(1st September 1939) German soldiers impersonate the Polish and attack a radio station in their borders, declaring that "Poland is invading". They use this as an excuse to invade Poland.
-(3rd September 1939) After their ultimatum for German troops to leave the country is not met, the United Kingdom and the Third French Republic declare war on the country. Contrary to what is seen here, almost 0 action occurred in these first few months, it even received the name "The Phony War". Britain dropped propaganda leaflets over German cities, while France made a lacklustre effort in the Saarland Offensive where they briefly crossed the border, but were afraid to even use artillery against the Germans in case they shot back.
-(9th April 1940 - 10th June 1940) Seeing how the British and French were preparing to blockade the German's supply of iron from Sweden by occupying Norway, Germany rushes to invade both countries. Denmark's unprepared 14,000 man strong army is unable to defend from Germany at all and surrenders in just 6 hours. That same day the German Army lands on the Southern coast of Norway and takes control of the capital of Oslo. Britain and France did land troops along the Northwest coast but a combination of the Norwegian landscape, climate and German air superiority lead to them withdrawing troops soon after. The Norwegian Army prevailed until the 10th June 1940 when they eventually surrendered.
-(10th May 1940 - 25th June 1940) Germany invades Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Luxembourg falls in 14 hours [Still longer than Denmark], Belgium surrenders on the 28th May 1940 and their king [Leopold III] gave himself up to the Germans. The Netherlands surrendered just before that on the 17th May, but their royal family fled to the Dutch East Indies [Indonesia now]. The main bulk of the British and French troops were trapped in an encirclement movement at Dunkirk, the French specifically making a heroic stand to defend the British evacuation. With such important parts of the army just wiped out, France quickly falls back and Paris falls on the 14th June 1940, surrendering not long later and being turned into the puppet state of Vichy France. In this time Italy also declares war on Britain and France.
-(13th September 1940) Italian soldiers in Libya launch an attack on an outnumbered garrison in Western Egypt, but are pushed back.
-(27th September 1940) Germany, Italy and Japan sign an alliance called the Triparte Pact.
-(11th October 1940) Britain and Italy engage in the Battle of Taranto, the first all-aircraft ship-to-ship naval battle. Britain is victorious.
-(22nd June 1941) Germany betrays the Soviet Union [Who they are allied with as part of the Moltov-Ribbentrop Pact] and launches a massive assault called Operation Barbarossa, they are MASSIVELY successful and sweep across the west of the country.
-(30th September 1941) With winter taking an extreme toll on the German troops, they are completely devastated at the Battle of Moscow, destroying the flow of their movement and pushing them back by miles.
-(7th December 1941) Japanese Naval Forces attack the US Naval base of Pearl Harbour, sinking 19 ships. A day later the United States declares war on the Japanese Empire and Germany comes to their defence by declaring war on the US.
-(8th December 1941 - 8th March 1942) Japan sweeps down through the Philippines, British Malaya, the Dutch East Indies and more of Eastern China.
-(1st January 1942) The United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and China sign the "Declaration of the United Nations".
-(12th - 28th May 1942) Germany attacks Kharkov as part of Operation Fredericus and are successful, moving down into the Caucus oil fields.
-(25th August 1942) Date in this video is technically wrong, Battle of Stalingrad begins on this day, the bloodiest battle in all of military history. Over the time it takes place, there are 1.1 million casualties.
-(8th November 1942 - 16th November 1942) A coalition of American, British, Indian, Free French, Canadian, Free Dutch and Australian troops attacked and or landed in Morocco. This operation was extremely successful and lead to the liberation of the French colony of Morocco and eventually the whole of North Africa.
-(18th January 1943) Soviet forces move to try and break the Siege of Leningrad.
-(28th November 1943 - 1st December 1943) Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill meet in allied occupied Persia to discuss strategies and their plans for after the war's end.
-(6th June 1944) The combined forces of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Free France, Australia, Free Czechoslovakia, Free Poland, Free Netherlands, Free Norway, New Zealand, Free Greece, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia land on the Normandy beaches (Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juno) and quickly overwhelm the defences there. Cherbourg and Brittany are quickly liberated by American forces, then Paris on the 25th August.
-(17th July 1944) Soviet troops cross the Polish border and begin to liberate the country slowly. Unlike in this video, Warsaw and the rest of Poland will not be fully liberated until the 17th January 1945.
-(January - March 1945) Countries like Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria all turn against Germany and move towards liberating Czechoslovakia and Germany itself.
-(25th April 1945) Soviet and American troops meet on the Elbe river and greet each other gracefully in grate contrast to how they would act towards each other just a few years later.
-(30th April 1945) German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler shoots and kills himself in his bunker in Berlin.
-(1st May 1945) Second Fuhrer Joseph Goebbels shoots himself and his wife, Chief of the Naval High Command Karl Donitz takes power and begins to organise peace negotiations.
-(2nd May 1945) Battle of Berlin ends in a Soviet victory, main German forces collapse and government disintegrates.
-(8th May 1945) An official surrender from the German High Command is given and all troops still loyal to the government lay down arms.
*PACIFIC FRONT*
-(May 1945) Now with all attention on them, allied troops move into China and push back the Japanese forces.
-(6th August 1945) An American bomber deploys a nuclear bomb over the city of Hiroshima, completely flattening it.
-(9th August 1945) Nagasaki is hit by the 2nd nuclear bomb.
-(9th August 1945 - 20th August 1945) Soviet forces invade Manchuria.
