Erich Hartmann had really liked the jet when flying it for the Luftwaffe. Praise from the greatest ace of WW2 has to be worth something for a fighter jet.

Fun Sabre trivia: in 1966,US Tactical Air Command evaluated it in close-in, 1v1 combat against all the aircraft it had in inventory at the time (F-100, F-101, F-104C, F-105, F-4). They called this "Operation Feather Duster", you can find the pdf with the full report online. They concluded that only the F-104, F-4 or an extremely well flown F-100 could compete with it in a dogfight, and only if they kept their speed above Mach 0.9. It really is one of the greatest aircraft to ever fly.
Edit: also imo, the best part of the FM of this aircraft is the uninduced roll you get when getting close to Mach 1. Flying at that speed really feels like the jet is going "nop nop nop not a good idea nop!"

Not sure if anyone's interested but, Mr Bob Hoover was the Chief test pilot for this a/c for North American Aviation. There's video of him shooting the nose off his a/c, not sure if he was shooting the gun or a rocket but it was pretty impressive non the less!!! He tells a story of going over to Korea when some of the crews were complaining about the a/c's performance, they prepped a plane for him and he refused it! He asked the a/c mechanics and pilots for the worst performing plane on the ramp, told them to fuel it up and that's the one for he'd take... He flew the wings off of it and the complaints from the crews stopped ;-) He also went over when a high ranking pilot complained that the a/c was so bad that they'd been trying to bomb a bridge and not one of the a/c could hit it! Mr Hoover tagged along as the lead pilot started his run with Mr Hoover on his wing, the lead dropped his bomb (he thought he'd dropped his bomb but it was still on his plane, he hadn't armed the system) Mr Hoover destroyed the bridge in one mission!!! I hope that anyone interested in the history of the F-86 to please go check out some of Mr Hoovers youtube videos, he truly was The Greatest Stick and Rudder Pilot... Ever!!! :-) I probably screwed up some of the facts in these stories but if you go check out those vids, you'll be really glad you did! Take care Reapers!!! :-)

The radar gunsight is super accurate if setup correctly with gunsight settings in the circle thing down behind the stick. It’s almost as accurate as a modern jet. If set correctly and isn’t easy for snap shots. You have to follow the specific bomb run

Great points you raise about sounds effects to help convey "seat-of-the-pants" feel. I hope this concept is always considered with all DCS modules. Now after all that switch flicking, the next person to pilot that plane is going the have a fun time preflighting it :D

Keep it up Cap, love your guide's, in the end it's up to the individual to buy or not to buy. But this is better than the devs graphical showcases of the aircrafts in question! Wish these types of reviews could be done before release surely the devs would have none of that! I agree with you totally on the sound feed back issues and the importance of it! I'm an old bugger and the sounds really do help or hinder depending on airframe! I know you love the sim, but its good to see your not a commercial fanboy! I appreciate a good honest opinion! I'm not sure but i think this one was made by Belsimtek not ED, just like the MiG-15 that's why this and MiG-15 .. best blacking out stuff planes. You get an awesome effect for hypoxia too.
ALSO a must try in the MiG 15 and probably in this on too is to let yourself get hit by a missile or heavy AAA fire and survive. It's awesome.
BAM canopy shattered, tinnitus in your ears black and white blurred view combined with red(if i remember correctly) ..all kinds of side effects, after tinnitus fades heavy breathing and blurred sound that slowly comes to normal.. you can REALLY feel that you have been hurt and something BAD is happening to your body not like in the other modules where you just hear a metal spank outside and/or black screen.
In this one ... when you get hit for the first time.. you will really feel the real meaning of DCS panic.
Oh .. getting hit and live through it .. one of my favorite things to do in the 15 :)

As my father told the story, he was forced back into Active Duty and Had to fly these things over in Korea. My mothers version was a bit different. Dad was recalled to active duty to train new F86 pilots in fighter combat tactics. What I recall is his offhand comments about wishing he could Restore an F86 to flying condition and how much fun it would be to fly it again.

This really is a great series. I'm really looking forward to the Mig-19 video when you're able to get to it, since that is the next one I'm looking to pick up before eventually wading into the warbirds. Though I think you've inadvertently talked me into getting the F-5 too, lol. I thought that was going to be a little too new for my tastes, but after your video on it, I can see I was wrong. I like the modern stuff, don't get me wrong. But my interests lie more with the older aircraft where the pilot is flying, not the computer.

The FM section of those reviews should be removed. Basing them solely on your “feeling” is arbitrary and subjective.
How something "feels" to someone is different from person to person, based on different experience, expectations (right or wrong) and thousands of other things.
Butting a Flight Model Section in those reviews based on your personal feelings is therefor both misleading to the thousands of viewers as well as unfair to the developer of the Modules.

@@grimreapers To further explain this, let me give you 2 examples.
Back before I knew better, if someone would have asked me if a F-15 could fly with one wing missing. I would have said I dont think so. My feeling would have been that there would be to much of a difference in lift created on the two sides to keep control of the plane. And for most planes that would have been true. But in that case my expectation did not meet reality, because my expectation were based on a too shallow understanding of the Aerodynamics involved.
      Second example.
Back before I knew better, if someone would have asked me where to put the Aim-9 and where to but the Aim-120 on the wing of an F-16, I would have said the Aim-9 on the wingtips and the Aim-120 under the wing. That would have made most sense to me, it should have put less stress on the wings having the lighter Aim-9s out on the tips and improved the roll-rate having the heavier 120s closer to the center of gravity.
But again, in reality things were the other way around. My understanding of the forces involved was not sufficient to expect the right outcome. Even though it seemed obvious.
Thats why you have to be careful with feelings and expectations. Even if you have a basic understanding of physics and aerodynamics, the Devil is often in the Details. That is hard to predict even for experts in the field.
But, DCS is meant to represent the Planes as close to the real thing as possible, and sometimes that means an Aircraft behaves very different than you expect in a certain situation.

One big F86 problem has been the guns. Started out with too low a muzzle velocity leading to the trajectory in relation to the reticle being wrong and reduced target effects. Then they started jamming ( yes really ) because the gun heating simulation was all to cock and they'd freeze up at altitude. Not sure what their current state is, maybe fixed.
I don't fly it on line so I just installed the mod that gives it 4 cannon instead.

I am confused by the rating system. I mean, for me, I'd think 5/5 would be "in the top 20%" not "absolute perfection" or "the best plane in DCS."
The most annoying and persistent bug with the F-86 is the cockpit engine sound going away in the middle of a flight. It happens about half the time for many players if you fly it for more than 15 minute missions. Otherwise, though... this is a really solid module. I wish we had more "period" aircraft / ground equipment to go with it, but at least (as I recall) the MiG-15 came out at pretty close to the same time to provide a pretty good match-up.

@@rwhunt99 Yeah, I know the difference between rockets and missiles. When I was writing about hitting a target without a lock, I actually meant that the missile can lock the target after its launch. Sometimes you have to give so much lead for your missile that you loose lock in the Viggen.
I do not know how the Viggen missile performs compared to the F-86 though. In my case it was a newer version of the sidewinder.

Pioneering tech of the 50s ? They had gyro Gunsites in the P47, And p 51s... well the late ones.... Dont think the Germans had them.. then again, they had every thing elce in WWII.. the mig and saber are a great match up, The mig has better engine, doesn't leave a long smoke trail. The mig uses centrifugal Jet, vs the sabers Axiel Flow... The saber Is better below 20000 ft. Or 6-7 k meters. Its Got Hydraulic boosted Control surfaces.! The mig does better Past 20k feet.. Its a bomber hunter so..... All the mig pilot has to do is, execute a climbing turn, and no saber can follow. Eventually the saber will stall.. then mig has bigger wider wings, which give it lift to 50k, but kill its roll rater especially down low. The Non boosted surfaces dont help either.. And the migs guns ... well its a mixed bag but I personally hate then.... Itsnsthe same Russian fighter doctrine from before WW2, and during. Ie, Theirnplanes Carry no God dam ammo! The Saber is opposite, the yanks saw cannon as too heavy for air use ( wrong) And while The 50 cal guns could fire all day. It'll take that long to bring down a Stubborn mig, or God forbid a heavy bomber.. the Germans found the best balance. They had favorite wwii planes.. Cept they couldn't operate up high.. Butbas guns and armament go.. give me a butcher bird.
