- Join Geoffrey Baer as we explore iconic Navy Pier’s story. Since it opened as Municipal Pier in 1916, Navy Pier has been evolving in response to the changing needs of a city on a Great Lake - Chicago. Originally, Navy Pier was a port for steamer and shipping traffic. It promoted Chicago’s progress to the world, presented concerts and conventions, and once hosted a trade fair that enticed a visit from the Queen of England. The Pier’s history spans the terms of 17 United States presidents, including one who trained as a fighter pilot there; 18 Illinois governors, including one who went to college there; and 15 Chicago mayors, including its first African-American mayor, who held his inauguration there. The Pier served as a training center in both world wars, and was the one-time Chicago home of the University of Illinois. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Navy Pier launched the city’s signature ChicagoFests. And since the mid-1990s, the Pier has drawn crowds as an amusement destination, tour boat embarcadero, and home to a children’s museum and Shakespearean theater. As it has from the beginning, the Pier provides Chicago’s city dwellers and visitors alike the chance to stroll over half a mile near Lake Michigan, and view the majestic Chicago skyline from a unique, and very close-up, perspective. In 2016, to coincide with the celebration of its 100th birthday, Navy Pier underwent a major renovation and embarked on an ambitious program to ensure a greener, more sustainable urban landscape.

Another jewel celebrating Chicago, Illinois, and American history.
I can literally walk outside, get on one bus, and it will take me ALL the way to the Pier 😍😍😍
I was an architectural student at Navy Pier from 1963 thru 1965 and went on to Chicago Circle campus.
I remember sitting is class and feeling the sway from a barge filled with sand being tied up on the north side as they were building the water plant to the north. we would see the top of the sand piles move past the windows. Then there were the ships that would shake the pier on the south side when docking. Along with that the noise of the trains down the middle of the pier. and also the planes flying overhead from Miege's field. this was a transportation hot spot.
The one benefit of the long pier and the interior corridor was that you passed all the other students coming and going each day.
all-in-all, a great experience.
as an aside, at the Circle campus, they had not constructed the Art and Architecture building yet. The school was housed in a great concrete building to the west of the campus. a former Perma-Lift Bra factory, the we renamed the Bra-House.
bravo once again wttw and Geoffrey Baer.
We lived across Navy Pier - I was a kid when the Chicago Children's Museum transfered from North Pier to Navy Pier. This was my neighborhood, and I absolutely loved it. Thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you for the wonderful knowledge of this great city Chicago my home town!
Great memories! I graduated from Navy boot camp from great lakes. We were released on Cinderella Liberty to head down to Chicago for the Mayor Jane Byrne Chicagofest. We were all decked out in our dress blue Cracker Jack's. We all found a girl to hang out with, dance with and play kissy face. Rick Springfield was playing Jessie's Girl in the Navy Pier ballroom. Great memories. 1981

Friends have a condo on Astor ... they used to have a live cam out of a window with a look upon the Navy Pier. Flip it on and see what the weather and what was happening.
Great memories after graduating from great lakes navy bootcamp and released for Cinderella liberty. Mayor Jane Byrne Chicagofest was going on. We were all walking and in our dress blue Cracker Jacks and dixie cup hats. Rick Springfield was on stage playing Jessie's Girl. We all met a cute girl on the navy pier to dance with and play kissy face. Fun times and great memories. 1981
the 1st Ferris wheel at Navy Peir t is still in operation it is in Brandson MO
What an amazing place 😍
There was a big ass gym there. Kids from all over Chicago and some Chicago Bulls players would come there and play Basketball. There was a Boxing ring on the South side of the gym. If you had a problem, it could be solved there with head gear and a REF. OLD School !
great video, helped me understand the evolution of navy pier. attended those Chicago Fests in late 70s early 80s, and the place was a massive dump, but Chicago Fest at least demonstrated what may be possible. I haven’t been back to the place to see the latest rendition (NY firm redo), because I mostly viewed the updated pier as a tourist trap and still a toilet overall. Clearly it’s no longer a toilet, and the video suggests it’s worth giving it a try in the future.
I never knew this, okay!!
I was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. My husband and I left 28 years ago. It's a terrible shame what's happened to "our hometown". My grandfather who was an European immigrant served in the American Army for 7 years, and fought in WWI. My grandmother came to Chicago in 1910, and talked about the terrible Eastland disaster. We surely did enjoy this series. I also graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1976 when it was known as "Circle Campus". Circle Campus is engraved on my college ring, which I wear whenever I leave our house.
Most American cities have issues of deterioration and crime. From my experience, cities are more enjoyable in other countries

@5:45 beware of those tossing around “elegant” proposals or solutions. it always ends up being the opposite-and the only thing “elegant” is the padding of fees and compensation for consultants.
On the 8th day God created Navy Pier
