  • Starting in 2016, The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission will convert 18,500 street lights to LEDs. LEDs last longer, require less maintenance, consume up to 50% less energy and will be wirelessly controlled. For more information go to SFWater.org/LEDs

Anything to convince the masses that it's needed! The general electric streetlight that they removed was probably installing in the 70's and would last another 50 years if needed! These shitty LED's will fault out at 2years max.

Let's save a bit of money by making the city look like a cold, barren wasteland at night.

yup, let's forget that optical engineering exists and just install a dozen little directional LED lamps on a board with no reflectors, shields or diffusers. and also let's ignore the fact that instant startups are blinding and said LED bulbs can be made with 3,000k or less on the color temperature chart.

Haha 30 minutes for a light? Other cities are doing a whole street in 30 minutes.

here, they install them in under 2 minutes by destructively removing the old light ( with sometimes even a hammer and vireos other small demolition tools if the spigots are jammed and seized. ) then throwing the remains of it over the side of the bucket truck into a skip. then installing the new one , not before scratching the sht out of it's diffuser with the way they remove it from it's spot in the bucket. wiring it up without even thinking about tightening the spigot bolts all the way. looks good for brand new but after about 3 weeks, the lights get loose, turn upside down or hang precariously off the edge of the boom. and to make matters worse, the terminals just had the wires shoved in, so there where a few sideways fixtures thAT WHIRR COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DEAD. not to mention that none of the gasket seas where installed propperly and sme fixtures now strobe on and off due to a flooded ballast. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!

What a waste of time and money and it’s only going to last 6 months…
