I just thought I'd say I bought the DVD based on these videos. It's pretty cool, albeit a tad expensive, my only gripe is it's only 1hr14 minutes.. I would have liked he went into guitar scales they play in more detail. Obviously pentatonics, but the approach is different. The DVD leaves you wanting more, but I highly recommend it, the best reggae tutorial videos I've ever seen, he really gets into the nitty-gritty and subtleties. I'm not a shill either, just a punter. Cheers!
That was a nice history given there by brother Steve Golding on the reggae rhythm and demonstration of the rhythm. However, I wish that brother Steve explained the notes that he is playing and show how that is done fretting those notes. I usually play that rhythm using simple C, G, and D notes at the lowest end of the guitar neck.
When you all get a chance listen 'Didn't I see it, didn't I do it' by the beautiful Miss Judy Mowatt and check out the rhythm guitar playing by on that song
Thanks for the lesson dude. I needed it to arrange one of my more than 2000 songs. I'm preparing my new CD containing a Reggae song. Thumbs up. I'd like to know the Bass Sequence.
he doesn't use effects. But some good effects you can for a clean reggae strum are Phaser, Wah Wah, chorus, Flanger or compression. I always like to have the option of using reverb to fill the space. Delay is also very nice
What makes reggae unique is the feel, swing, etc. of the chords. Most people can play these chords, not many can play it with the feel that makes reggae such a beautiful style of music. Check out the following video from another legend for a better explanation: youtu . be/8f73TICkFKE
The whole band is making the feel, the "chack" guitar is pretty simple yes, but alot of musicians dont understand it and try to make the "whole feel" on just the guitar, that's the point when they actually ruin it
The same happens to keyboard players, they try to play all the parts at once and it just doesn't work. Reggae is a "tribal" sound where each instrument is a rhythm instrument, and the rhythms cut in & out of each other to create a whole greater than the sum of the parts.
