What are your favorite things to can/freeze from the garden?
I love to can corn and tomato soup and pasta sauce and pizza sauce 👍😊
Our family does a full day of freezing corn since we plant about an acre worth!
Definitely corn and tomato sauces, pickles and green beans!
Beets! Pickled red beets.😋 And peas too!
NJ Family corn, tomato soup, enchilada sauce, marinara sauce
Everytime I see videos like these, it makes me want to have a garden. It just seems like so much work and I feel like I'd mess it all up. 😂
LOL, yes, it is a lot of work... I don't enjoy it much, to be honest. I like looking at it when it's taken care of, but I don't enjoy all the work. but the reward of good food is worth it!
@@theMennoniteMom - Yes! The reward of all that hard work makes it seems so worth it!
Nah. You cant mess up growing vegetables. Set aside a small square foot plot 4x8 and divide in 4 sections. Plant what you want to eat in each section. Carrots, green beans, spinach, romaine, green onions, tomatoes. Basil, One section each for carrots, beans. The other sections can hold multiple rows of more than one vegetable such as spinach and salad greens and onions. Tomatoes take up a lot of space, the others dont.
The hardest part for me is to water and pick. I mulch leaves and hardly weed. I don't till. Sold the tiller years ago. I work with nature and then mother nature works for me. You can grow an abundance of food. I live in the city and grow more than I can eat.
TFS! Your pink dress is so beautiful on you - definitely your color. Smart tip with the colander, I remember chasing beans around the sink when my mom used to put them up.so glad to have watched this refresher!
My grandson is the age of your sweet baby boy.. They are such a joy at that age. Enjoy every second they grow so fast.
aww, that's wonderful! I'm sure you have a lot of fun with him! Yes, they are such a blessing!
Xander is soooooo cute! Dad,dad, dad! Lol. Mom understands and translates "He wants you to look at the worm." Lol, love your little family.
LOL, yes, sometimes I need to help out. lol. Thank you!
Hi here's a thought re too many green beans.......one year we planted 15 rows of peas and were up till after midnight for a week. I even got callouses on my fingers from shelling them every day, so we finally called our church and the youth group came and picked the rest of them, then we donated them to the local care home and they were able to put them up for the residents to enjoy, I don't know if it can be done nowadays with all the regulations but it was a real blessing to all concerned. Maybe even donate them to a homeless organisation?
I wish that was the way things could work. I'm pregnant with very little money and I would LOVE to have those green beans! God bless you 🙏❤️
Good for you! That's a great idea!
Im sorry to hear that! My bean plants seem to be over the hill.
Garden and flowers are beautiful. Y'all have a beautiful place and of course little Xander is the cutest ever.
Thanks so much!
"This's like eating cardboard" 😂😂😂 pickin home grown beans... Ahh.. 💛
Lovely place.... Loved the bicycle with flowers on it.. awesm..
The garden looks amazing...saw the whole video....who else is watching this during quarantinemode...??? 😅
Pretty sweet stuff...
That kiddo is so cute. Like who else can happily bite off a green bean like that. Sweet....
The whole garden looks beautiful , it wasn't long back you were out there amongst it, getting it to this stage. Well done! Jack of all trades Janine lol
Thank you! Yes, the summer has flown by!
What a happy face at the end! Very nice
He's so darn cute and a good helper to 😆
thank you!
The garden is beautiful! Love the flowers and creeping Jenny too. I haven’t grown creeping Jenny for a long time and it’s so bright and pretty. Yes, picking beans can be a real pain. You have to deal with them immediately or they get tough. I remember canning beans with my mom when I was a girl. Freezing is much quicker. My favorite way of prepping green beans is to pickle them! So tasty!
hey, I like that idea! pickling green beans! I need to try that! thanks for the idea!
I’m glad you like the idea! I like to pickle them with dill and garlic. They’re better than regular dill pickles! 😊
@@karmakauffman7445 I can totally see that! Yumm
Xander is so precious! Makes me remember my boys when they were little.
I'll bet! I keep wishing he would stop growing so quickly!
Thanks for the video. Your garden, home and family are so lovely. 😎
thank you so much!
Love the Ice pack hack! I have been actually using ice cubes and would always run out. Also the salad spinner! Genius!
Homegrown tomatoes!! My favorite! I could almost smell those green beans on the stove. Growing up we did lots of canning and freezing fruits and veggies. A little since I've been married but not much. Your gardens look so nice. And such handsome helpers! Thanks for sharing. I miss gardens and growing things. It's nice to see others doing what I can't do anymore. Makes me feel like I'm there too! God bless! 💜
Well I'm glad you enjoyed and memories came wafting back. (: that's interesting that you grew up doing many of these things. I need to do more myself. Summer just gets so busy!
That's a lot of beans! I could listen to you talk forever! Love to you, Nolan + Xander and the doggies!
well thank you! yes it was a lot of beans! and thanks to mom, because she really helped me out a lot this year!
Love your channel- love green beans too and love your little guy and your Corgi💕
thank you! yes, we love our little corgis!
I really like sunflowers the best happy face. 🌻
I agree with you!
Those sunflowers are gorgeus! Sunflower are my absolute favourite flower
they are a beautiful flower, aren't they?! so cheerful and happy!
what a nice garden you have . such an ideal place for a kid to grow .i also grow and use home grown vegetables even we grow our own onions and garlic . it’s true once you eat the home grown vegs u can’t eat store bought!
thank you! And good for you! I should try garlic sometime!
What a worthwhile vegetables to grow and preserve. One year we bought a couple of plants and they did so well, we wished we'd got more! We love green beans and agree with you there is no taste comparison between fresh and store bought.
I'd love us to have a raised bed or two for the easy to grow vegetables, it wouldn't be too different a project. Just costly for all that soil, maybe l should start composting now to get ahead start; it takes such a long time though doesn't it. 😂
Lovely to watch you work beside Nolan and Xander in the garden. I loved being out doing jobs with my husband with the boys running around. Now l get to watch him from the kitchen and keep him filled up with drinks. The boys are much older and off doing their own thing now.
It was nice to see you all outside in the sunshine together Jeannine, and have Xanders sweet smiling face throughout the video. Have a blessed Sunday xxx
Yes, soil is expensive! I hope you can figure something out so you can continue to grow what you wish! I'm glad you enjoyed and thanks for always taking the time to leave a comment. It means a lot! God bless!
Man oh man I miss sitting on the porch with my grandparents snapping beans. Sweet memories.
ahh, good memories! (: sounds like you had a great childhood!
How cool is this, I just picked yesterday big box of green beans and was about to Google how to freeze them :). You don't really need many plants at all, I have around ten plants and they really grow almost like weed. Xander is so cute wandering around in the garden :).
that's wonderful! I hope your freezing went well! yes, you don't need many!
My hubby like to make jam in the summer for the year from the blackberries that grow out in the back of our property we go blueberry picking in August to the farm not far from where we live with our son and daughter in law and grandkids the kids love it they get there faces painted, we lived in a mennonite community with lots of farms around us we go and get fresh eggs from the farm every week and go when we need blueberry's, sorry for going on back to the growing off vigges and canning lol we also grow our own vigges love when the tomatoes are ready Husband make his great sauces's, no garden this year though as my husband was putting in a under ground water sprinklers next year for sure! I'm glad you enjoyed! Sorry I can't share mine with you!
Fresh vegetables. Delicious..
I live in Kansas and our sunflowers are just now starting to come on. We had such a rainy spring it messed with their growth. Love to see your beautiful flowers and gardens. Xander is such a joy to watch and to see him try to figure out that fat, colorful worm! He definitely had to share that with daddy.
yes he did! 😉 ah yes, Kansas! Don't you have the huge fields of sunflowers? How beautiful that must be!
When I was growing up in Michigan, we canned fruits and vegetables from our grandfather's farm. It was wonderful to have fruits & vegetables, fresh & canned, year round.
that's great! Yes, it is nice to have homegrown food stored for the year!
Fresh grown veggies are the best. Love Xander's haircut-adorable!
thank you! and yes they are...
I mostly can my green beans but I do freezer some. I actually lay them out on pan to freeze n then bag them in gal bags. Since they're individually frozen I'll just dump out however much I want at meal time. It would be faster to just bag n freeze tho, maybe I'll start doing them like that. A new thing I did this year when canning is not fill my jars full of water but only a few inches of water. They taste fresher in my opinion
very interesting tips. do you blanch if you lay them out on a pan?
@@theMennoniteMom yes I do, that's just so I can dump them in a gal bag
🧡🧡Fellow green bean picker here! I actually learned some tips too! I do quart bags like you, but then I also usually freeze a few ice cream buckets full for when we have company and I need a bunch at once.
hey that's a great idea with the ice cream buckets! I should do that next time!
Very pretty garden
thank you!
Loved the garden video!!! Xander is a dill as always. I enjoy watching him grow up through your channel.
he is growing so fast!
Great garden, great harvest, and a good trick with the straw!
thank you!
Great video, lovely garden. Fun to see Xander playing among the sun flower stalks. The green beans really did produce this year, they look so pretty all bagged up ready to go in the freezer. You did very well with the flower beds too. I love creeping Jenny but I just don't seem to do as well with it. Yours looks gorgeous among the rock wall. Have a Blessed day.
thank you! it is a good feeling to have them tucked into the freezer! Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!
♥️ love green beans
Thanks for the garden update. I had been wondering how your garden was going. It is beautiful. Even with the doggie trails I love everything. I live in FL and it is hard to find colorful flowers that make it through the heat and daily rain in summer. So your colorful garden is a welcomed sight. The sunflowers are amazing. I freeze my green beans as well. It’s so much easier to freeze than can and they taste way better. Thanks for the update. Absolutely love your channel. ❤️
I'm glad you enjoyed! (even the doggie trails, ha). Yes, I'll bet Florida can be hard on flowers. What about winter time? Or does that dip below freezing? Anyway, thanks for the comment! Have a lovely day!
Great job on the garden. Next year I will do Sunflowers. We have some cool nights here in NJ and my flowers are dying. Zander is a sweetheart! Put a fence on the front of the flower bed. And small stones. It may deter the dogs.
good for you! yes, I should try something of that sort to keep the dogs out.
Nice video again. Loved to see Xander eating the raw beans. My daughter (17) did that also when she was younger. Broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage also.
I pickle mini onions, courgettes (yellow and green). And made lavender vinegar....lovely to sprinkle on some salade. Green beans also blanched and in the freezer. Greetings to you and Nolan. God bless you.
ahh, lovely! you sound quite industrious and that will be so yummy! such a great feeling!
I love the path through the garden! Flowers look great! Thanks for the hack with the straw!!!!! Who would've thunk it?! Lol
Thank you! LOL, I know, I ran across that right before I did these beans. I loved it! who would've thunk? Ha ha
Your garden is lovely! I love your sunflower patch. Fresh green beans are the best!! My favorite thing to grow is strawberry popcorn. There’s no fuss, plant, grow let dry as long as possible on the stalk, finish drying on the cob. Pop and enjoy. In your area you’d need to pick before a frost. Zinnias are our favorite garden cutting flower.
that's a great idea! I should try it! never heard of strawberry popcorn. I love zinnias as well! I should plant some next year.
I’m a new subscriber and I love your channel. Wishing right now that I had a garden. I don’t really have space for one but maybe I can change that before spring comes around. I don’t need a big one. Looks like you have a wonderful family. Your little boy is precious and was so sweet that your husband came and helped you pick all those beans.
Welcome! I'm so honored to have you here! I hope you can have a garden someday! And yes, my husband is great in helping me with work! Love him so much!
I love garden videos were you show how to do it. You should show us how you get it ready when you want to eat it the green beans after they have been in the freezer. God bless
thanks for the suggestion. I thought about that after I made the video, how I should've included the final step of preparing! I just heat them up on the stove with a little extra water if needed. Steam them for awhile until desired tenderness and then... (shhhhhh... lots of brown butter and salt!)
Ok got to try that one day thanks alot.
I loved this video! My husband and I are first time gardeners this year. I would love more canning/freezing videos!
Good for you! I have another canning video coming this year, but I don't think I'll be doing anymore this year. I'm finished, I think... unless I decide to do salsa. Good luck with your garden!
Yah!! All my favorite things,Green beans,Sunflowers and A daily dose of Bubba and another awesome video! You just. Made my morning better!! Have an awesome day and weekend ahead!! God bless from Ephrata,Pa!😊💓🙏
Well, I'm glad you enjoyed! (: there is something about sunflowers that are so cheerful and happy! Waves to Ephrata!
Oh your pink dress makes you look so chipper! Nothing is easy to keep up on when you have tiny feet to keep up with too! Let the weeds go and watch your little man grow 😄
LOL, good one! did you make that up? I will have to keep that one tucked away!
NJ Family Yes, because I’ve been there 😊
Thanks Janine, this video was so helpful and liked your hacks for the blanching process. My Mom used to boil the beans for 3 minutes like you said. Brought back some fond memories. Going to plant some bush beans next spring on our balcony since we are city people. Tried pole beans but didn't do well this growing season so will be trying something new. Love your sunflowers and especially to see Zander running through the tunnels. Take care.

thank you! And best of wishes with your beans! that's a great idea!
You have such a beautiful flower garden and wonderful vegetable garden. I would love to try growing some green beans next season. Thanks
thank you! you really should! they are so tasty IMO
My parents can green beans every other year. I've never frozen any. This looked a little easier than the canning. I think I'm going to try this with my small garden next year. Thanks
yes, I personally like canned better, but I'm too lazy! (:
You’re such a wonderful teacher❤️ thanks for sharing your process

I really enjoyed this video!!! Not able to have a garden due to renting but I'm still able to get fresh produce from my moms garden....which is a huge blessing!!😁👍😊
that's great because there is just nothing like homegrown!!!!
Hi Jovita, just wanted to pop by and say that we rent too, we are considering doing a pot/container garden. There are hundreds of ideas for growing produce in pots on pinterest. Just wanted to share that with you.
Thank you Janine for the wonderful video.
your gardens look good, I love the sun flowers. I know what you mean about getting fresh things from your garden, my husbands tomatoes are awesome this year...
thank you! that's wonderful! I would love to bite into a fresh tomato about now!
Very nice garden . You should have great meals with beans. I bought a less common 45 degree french cut machine. It gives a better look for the green beans. I eat all my beans each year so I skip the blanching step but added one step to get snap like beans out of the freezer. I bought a blast freezer that takes beans to frozen state in an hour or so on a cookie sheet. Then to the vacuum sealer. I bought a blast freezer on a auction site online used. They are expensive even used $1200 plus shipping so it isn't for everyone but it takes all the rubbery texture out of vegetables including carrots! When I used zip lock bags I used a bucket of water to dunk the bag 90% into the water to press out the air and then seal the bag. To help limit freezer burn, every 3 to 4 qt bags go into a gallon zip lock bag to give double protection. I see you hill potatoes you may want to try the way the Amish here grow potatoes They place the seed potatoes on the ground and cover them with straw. When you want potatoes you just flip over the straw and pick them off the ground. It worked good for me. Keep up the great work!
wow! good for you! that sounds like a great way to freeze! and I love the tips with the potatoes! that would be wonderful! so there is no dirt on top of the potatoes? or very little.
@@theMennoniteMom Yes, just lay the seed potatoes on the ground then cover them with straw and they grow. My soil was loose below the surface seed potatoes and they did grow a bit into the ground but no digging to get them out. I have not tested it but placing the seed potatoes on hard ground may solve the issue of them digging into the soil. This placing it on hard ground isn't tested . I have tested them on soft ground only. The Amish also put lime on potatoes to drive off potato bugs. Rain will wash it off, so reapply after rain storms. I have tested the lime for potato bugs and it worked for me. I had an average yield . You may want to start a test plot and see if it works for you. It would save all the tilling if you like how it works. I hope this answers your question.
@@stevegorkowski3246 that's super interesting! Thanks for taking time to explain! Im intrigued and will look into this!

that's so interesting! others were talking of doing this and I never heard of it! that's great!
I just harvested a lot of things yesterday so this is perfect! I freeze kilos of rhubarb every year. That way we can have pie and rhubarb lemonade all year round
Oh how I wish I could grow rhubarb well. I’ve killed two years of them! Any hints?
@@brightpurpleviking This year I tried to plant rhubarb from seeds and it seems to have worked really well. I live on the west coast of Sweden so the summers can be pretty rainy but they seem to handle it well. The seeds I used was a type called "Victoria". Every year I give some extra nourishment to the soil by blending in some chicken manure (You can buy them in pellets form from the garden centre). During the season I try to keep the plants "open". I pluck some stems every now and then so the sun can hit the roots/bottom of the plant. They also taste better when the stems are smaller because they can get a bit woody otherwise. My plants are placed in a sunny place in my garden and our soil is naturally full of clay so I make sure to add new soil and sometimes I have even added a little bit of sand to keep the soil well-drained. I have tried different methods and this seems to work for me, try your own methods and adapt them to what works for your garden, and good luck!
Julia Rose oh wow thank you for this advice! Do you let the plants come up again the next year or do you plant seeds at the start of every year?
@@brightpurpleviking I let them stay in the ground. Our winters here in Sweden are pretty mild so it works for me. I had some plants from earlier that has been there since our house was built and they have stayed in the ground all their life without any visible problem. The reason I tried seeds as well this year was that I haven't seen rhubarb seeds before and wanted to try it out. The plants that I planted this years has become equally as big as their older siblings so I'm thinking about letting them stay as well.
Janeane, cut your flower clumps down by half as the flowers begin to fade. It will restimulate new foliage growth and rebloom. As long as the seed heads in the flowers never have a chance to ripen the plant hasn't completed its life cycle and will continue to set flowers in an attempt to do so. Thats why dead heading works. Pruning the foliage gives added invigoration to the plant to fill out, producing larger plants and also more flowers. Your annuals as well as perennials should give you long blooming times.
thank you for that! I will take your advice! That rings a bell, but I've never done it!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I used to garden and freeze/can so much. It really is rewarding.
thank you! and good for you! I don't do as much as I should!

Are they still crisp when you cook them? This is the only green vegetable my husband will eat and he likes them lightly steamed with a crunch still in them. I have been wanting to learn to can and was just wondering on how crisp they will stay.
Xander always puts a smile on this ole ladies face. Thanks for all you share. Be blessed!
Glad you enjoyed! I personally don't like mine crunchy, so I steam them until they are soft. But yes, they will have crunch if you don't steam them too long. I think canning takes the crunch away. I personally like canned better, but I'm too lazy to can. ha ha

Did u know that the vitamins are actually in the tail of the green beans? And its actually gourmet to leave the tail on 😉 just snip off the head and prompto your done!! Saves 1 step 👍
I did not! good to know! thank you!
Why do beans need to be blanched? Just curious. And a friend gave me a head of cabbage from her garden last year. I used to think growing cabbage was a waste of garden space being that they cost about 39 cents a pound at the store. Well then I tasted homegrown cabbage and the difference was phenomenal! I wish I had a big garden spot! Thanks for the video and God bless your weekend

Loved the flower beds and garden!! Is the creeping jenny an annual or perennial? the green bean process was fun to watch (lol)
thank you! they are a perennial! they keep coming back, almost taking over my flowerbed.
We have always done pole beans, but it's always a hassle every year to get the poles up and my husband us super busy in the spring. I'm thinking about doing bush beans, after watching your video. We like to roast them every few nights while they are in the growing season and we make dilly beans out of the rest. I wish I had luck with zucchini and pickling cucumbers, they don't do well in our soil. I'm curious about this potato in straw method.
i've actually never seen pole beans, are they easier to pick? Green beans are so good in season, aren't they? I also love pickles, but rarely make them. Cheers. (i'm curious about the straw potatoes as well)
@@theMennoniteMom yes, they are easier to pick. You can stand for most of it. You need two posts, something similar to a clothes line and then string lines between. The beans crawl up the lines. You have to kinda train them to begin with. It's best to make it so you can get in the middle of the lines for easier picking, but it takes a couple people at least to set them up. I'm also on a gf, df, no refined sugar diet and I avoid corn as much as possible. I LOVE mochas and I'll admit I cheated this last month and have had wheat, boy am I paying for it in inflammation and tummy upset. I have adrenal fatigue and low thyroid issues. It's so hard to stay on the diet. I love roasted green beans, roasted cauliflower and salads so the garden helps out a lot.
@@tamarasofie9957 I'm sorry to hear that! That is a hard hard diet! Ive never been able to stick to it long, but I need to do something. Im not doing well either. Sorry, I know all about inflammation and not being able to eat your "fun cheat" foods. It's tough!
@@theMennoniteMom praying you find some meals that will make it easier to stay on the diet. It is extremely tough!

What type of greenbean plants do you recommend? I want to try tyem next year. We only have a teeny tiny plot and our tomatoes this year bloomed and bloomed with no fruit waah :(
If I would've caught it early we probably could've made adjustments but it just didn't happen this year. Our mint and basil did OK though. I'm still learning my new zone, we came from a suuuuuper long easy to grow zone and now short and tedious zone. In the past I've frozen gobs and gobs of zucchini & summer squash.
what area are you from? Honestly, I'm sorry... I forget what type of beans these are. The local greenhouse recommended them. And too bad about your tomato plants. Thats no fun! Stubborn little buggers, ha ha. Better luck next year!
@@theMennoniteMom I came from central TX (8b) where we would plant second week of March and harvest all the way through October! Now I'm in the TX panhandle (7a/6b) and can't plant until after mothers day (MidMay) and only harvest through mid September.

@@stillyourb so interesting. 😁 no wonder they say don't mess with texas!
How do you prepare those green beans later for the table
I steam them until tender and then add butter and salt. YUM!!!
@@theMennoniteMom Thankyou very much! My favorite thing is to freeze corn & chilis for filling chili
@@tinawall1984 yum! Sounds delish!
Your son is such a ham...he is a natural in front of the camera.
😂
Love your pink dress.
thank you!
Are you going to pressure can any green beans next year?
So far I only freeze them
Did you ever find out where your camper was leaking.
we are hoping we did. I'll talk about it in one of my next camper videos. Thanks for asking!
One question for you, how do you prepare them later... like for a meal!? Do you just warm them up or add some salt... curious😉
I steam them until mostly soft (I like mine tender) and then (shhhh... add brown butter and salt) YUM!!! if you are on Keto diet, this works great!
@@theMennoniteMom ok thanks a lot😊 I really enjoy watching your videos... funny thing the very first video of yours I watched was Mother-in-law is coming i really liked it and have been watching and enjoyed your videos ever since. May God bless you for all the good work!!!

thanks for watching!
So I’m wondering, are the beans crunchy when you eat them? How do you fix them? I like my beans soft and tender to eat.
I like to cook mine until they are soft and then add butter and salt. (:
NJ Family Thanks!
❤❤❤
Are you going to do any more techy videos?
yes, I'm sorry. I'm not super consistent. Pretty sick right now, so just doing the necessities till I can get to another extra tech video.
Ok! Hope you feel better soon! Take care!
thank you!
I love to can green beans but hate to pick beans. Ugh. The spiders etc. just an inside girl. Lol. Update on dog breeding side gig?
yes, I'm with you! picking is my least favorite, although I don't mind the spiders, LOL. The dogs? ugh... I'm really nervous. my female go pg and wasn't supposed to. We were waiting until she's older. Penned up the male and he was so desperate to get out, he got out! and well, now we have a litter of puppies on the way. I want to take her to the vet soon for a check up... I'm so scared of what happened last time, that I've truly lost confidence. And she is young, we didn't want this to happen. Pray all will be well! She should be having pups in the next two weeks. (end of)
NJ Family I will be praying fir your dog and for all to go well. It’s terrifying!
@@jojoply thank you! I will be doing my best
Interesting! I bring my water to a boil, throw the green beans & time 3 minutes right away then take out. It doesn't come to a boil.
I've heard of doing it that way as well!
Linda menino eu gosto muito aqui casa tudo tiams vc lindo filinho
Put up a little electric fence and that will train the dogs to stay off of them.
yes, good point!
