In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm once again listening to music by Supertramp. But, I haven't previously heard anything from Brother Where You Bound, including the title track. This one is both a product of its time and timeless, with references to Orwell's 1984 and the Cold War...as well as concerns of corruption, misinformation, and geo-political tensions and how they affect us. It's a wonderful piece, and I invite you along for the ride!

John Helliwell played sax on Momentary Lapse of Reason
Wow, I didnt know that. He also appears on Pineapple Thief track Fend For Yourself.
Supertramp and Pink Floyd are natural prog rock companions.
Very topical and very provocative lyrics by both groups
This is one of my favorite Supertramp albums.
A couple decades ago my wife and I took a trip to Rome. A cabbie there was convinced I was a famous rock star. Far from it, I said, but he wouldn't have it. He kept guessing what band I was in, then hit on Supertramp and demanded my autograph. Yes! I said, I'm in Supertramp! I love them, probably always my dream to be in that band. So I was finally in Supertramp, signing my first autograph in Rome of all places. Man, it's great being a rock star, y'all! Thanks for taking me back.
Great story. From now on, you were a member of Supertramp and no one can change my mind!
I'm curious to know what name you signed with
My own of course! I’m with the band! He probably told all his friends about meeting “that guy” from Supertramp. Made his day, too. I was happy to sign it. If it weren’t for the Supertramp fans I’d be a nobody. Come to think of it… we paid the fare! I’m a rock star and I don’t get comp’ed? What did I sign????

The production and sound quality on this album ranks among the very best. When cranked up, it rattles my windows. Still, one of my all-time favorites. Hard to believe it is almost 40 years old.
This is a great album that I feel doesn’t get the respect it should. Rick Davies is fantastic on piano and great lyrics as well. Hope you enjoy listening and looking forward to your opinion. In my opinion, the whole side one is a play. Reminds me of Rudy from Crime of the Century
Agreed 👍🏻 👍🏻
five of the six songs are fantastic/masterpiece level. The only song that is not as good is " Ever Open Door ", which, while not a bad song, is eclipsed by the rest of album
Agreed
Free world
A totally underrated album. Sad to say that. And this piece is a masterpiece.
Commencing 7:25 you can hear in the background a tune of ''The Internationale''. The lyrics of Internationale were written after the fall of Paris Commune in 1871 by French anarchist and poet Eugène Pottier. Originally it was sung to the music of Marseillaise, but in 1888 Belgian socialist and composer Pierre De Geyter composed a distinct melody which is used to this day.
I love to see you jamming at the same time you're listening to this piece of music. You SHOULD do it more often, Doug.
Amazing!
Cannonball is another great song from the same album
Yes that would be another great reaction choice
English music of whatever genre was astonishing in the 70’s. Wonderful 🎉🎉🎉😊😊
This is sooooooo good 👍🏻Did you here David on guitar? And the French horns? Great song , huh?😊
WOW! I am blown away to see you reviewing this. This is one of the most treasured and influential albums in my life. I loved this track in middle and high school. Thanks for the awesome review, it makes me to happy to see you share this amazing track. I am a long-time pink floyd and supertramp fan, this track is just a perfect mix for me.
fantastic, underrated, incredible album. Also one of the first to be recorded in all digital (DDD) for CD so it sounded terrific on a good setup!! Cannonball and Better Days are also standout tracks… even better than this one IMO. enjoy!!
I concur, this excellent track kind of meanders a tad, IMO. My fave album by them BTW.
Brilliant album and title-song is also fantastic , but some musical intelligence is necessary to appriciate it.
One of my favorite groups. Under appreciated.
BWYB is one of my favourite Supertramp albums. Along with the song you reviewed, Cannonball and Better Days are two of my other favs that I have wore out over the years.
Gilmour's first guitar solo is at 13:10, Surprised you didn't recognise the trademark sound there 😀
Amazing song from this great album . Amazing sound qualtity and production level , too.
The high melody starting at 01:04 into the song is actually called ""The Internationale"
From Wikipedia: "The Internationale" (French: "L'Internationale") is an international anthem that has been adopted as the anthem of various anarchist, communist, socialist, democratic socialist, and social democratic movements.
This song is clearly about totalitarian ideologies and therefore as relevant today as ever.
Hey great video and analysis! Can't wait for you to hear "another man's woman" live, rick was a genius, on his piano and the solo is just perfect!
Love how well your parts fit right in Doug. Great breakdown!!
David, always with appropriate and tasteful guitar work.
The tapes were sent over from to the US to England. David G sent them back with a few versions for solos. Would love to hear the discarded ones.
All in all, this is probably my favorite Supertramp piece. Nice montage of stylistic changes.
Yes yes YES!!! Finally someone doing this right! Best reaction to their more proggy tunes I've ever seen
Supertramp fans should not miss this incredible album.
Always always always, Great song, Great Band! And you Doug: you are great too!
Excellent!
Quite a song, I haven't heard the entirety of it until this video. Really good! I was waiting for Gilmour to show up, and finally he ends with an outro solo!
Thanks, Doug! Greetings from Argentina.
Sonically, One of my Favorite Albums...!!!
Always liked this album a lot ❤ all good songs
You should listen to Pete Townsends solo album White City and Gilmours second solo album About Face. They worked with each other on those albums.
Fun Facts, the intro was the reading of George Orwells "1984" and the lead guitar was played by David Gilmour from Pink Floyd.
GENIUS
Excellent! The title track from Supertramp's last great album...and it's totally Progtastic. 🥰
A fun fact, after David Gilmour played on this song. Pink Floyd invited John Helliwell to play on A Momentary Lapse of Reason. (However his name was misspelled as John Halliwell and he was never paid for his work)
Thanks Doug for this one. We all should be informed from all sides. Then trust the facts, the truth.
beautiful mind
"Better Days" is also a good one.
this has been my favorite album from them , been listening to this since it came out.
a great album, cannonball is a mover
They do a little spontaneous King Crimson gibberish in the middle there.
Oooooo how delicious! I'd never heard this tune. Wow!❤❤❤
You might want to do a companion follow up by checking out Roger Hodgson's "Had A Dream (Sleeping with the Enemy) from his 1984 album 'In The Eye Of The Storm'.
My favorite band, and a great (and underappreciated) album. Keep it up, and please review some King Crimson, especially their first album!
"And the phone rings and you disappear into the night" is one of my favorite lyrics from this, always stuck with me for some reason lol. Maybe because it reminds me of Golden Earring's Twilight Zone.
Don't think I've ever seen this featured anywhere before. I love the change halfway through the song. It's kind of declaration of, "it's Gilmour time."
If you like Rick's voice and piano, then there's a song I think you'd love by earlier Supertramp called Another Man's Woman. I'd love to see you react to it! Thanks for this excellent reaction, Doug and, of course, the Council of Dougs.
A very cool short film was made of this.
I remembered hearing this for the very first time in '85 on a Sunday late evening radio show in the Bay area called Stone trek on K.O.M.E 98.5!! Next morning I'm down at Tower records buying the album (most likely a cassette)!! I have forgotten about that album! But never forgotten why I liked it so much!!
Same here, though the cassette was a gift for my birthday-heard it on the same radio broadcast, though over KLOS in L.A.
Very interesting and triggering track. Haven't hear it before, thank you.
Love Supertramp. Buy all their albums
Although I love Hodgson, this is still my favourite Supertramp album as an entirety. Yes, it's a Roger-less ship, but it's well constructed and leads in directions perhaps rerouted had Hodgson been there to input his navigation as fto its final destination. There are individual songs with the original lineup that are now standards which I grew up with that I would consider my "favourites" but this is the album I can listen intently to from first to last track...followed closely by "Crisis? What Crisis?"
Prima
Freue mich schon darauf
I didnt realize Supertramp was prog. Ill have to check them out!
Check out Crisis, what crisis? Then Crime of the Century. Then Even in the quietest moments. Then of course Breakfast in America. Those four plus Brother Where ya bound are all mighty fine albums.
Rick davies is such an underrated singer.
Trivia. Scott Gorham was Bob Siebenberg's brother in law (Bob married Scott's sister).
Also, Scott Page played with Pink Floyd, as did the great John Helliwell on Momentary Lapse of Reason.
Very underrated Supertramp album. One of their top 2 or 3.
Some of the sections reminded me of early Pink Floyd and in the latter section, I kept thinking One of These Days. Perhaps that's why David agreed to play on the track.
Great to discuss my very, very first CD! I think it was 1985 that I bought it, I just didn't have a CD player yet, I would pick it up a few hours later at the Hifi store, the Philips CD104. But what a horror, what this is! When I got to the title track I was still not rid of those terrible noises, clicks pops and rumble. What a joke in retrospect!
I believe it's time for one Opeth reaction again! I suggest the two last songs in their latest album, In Couda Venenum. Kontinuerlig drift and Allting Tar Slut are the titles in Swedish, they sort of hang together. The album is released with both Swedish and English lyrics, you choose.
Cheers.
To me by far the best Supertramp album... and they have written great, great music.
The musical and political testament of this influential band.
In my opinion this masterpiece would not have been able to see the light if Roger Hodgson was still in the band.
The traditional supertramp sound was kind of suppressed and in my opinion was replaced by more complex harmonic and use of the instruments. David Gilmour at his best.
Anyway... Supertramp were giants and still are.
Hey Doug. If you liked this multi layered magnificence, then you will be mad about 10cc's "Feel the Benefit". Literally EPIC!
I sincerely think that BYYB is a much better album that the final one with Roger ("Famous Last Words"). These songs were originally (like those from Hodgson's "In the Eye of the Storm") going to be for the follow up to "Breakfast In America". Rick and Roger could't agree on the direction of the material following BIA and excluded the material they wrote which ended up being on the follow up album to "Famous...". It's a damn shame because the material for both would have made a great double album and finale for the band with Hodgson.
eye of the storm is a great album. I agree that this album is better than famous last words.
@@Atlanticmulberry Agreed.. But I think "Eye of the storm" doesn't age that well because RH was already heavily into doing everything on its own, instruments mostly synthesizer-based, and so on. Same mistake RD made with "Free as a bird" in my opinion. I'd love to hear both albums with the original supertramp sound.
Hi, Doug. I would ask you to react to a marvellous and emotional song by Marillion called 'GAZA', from their wonderful 2012 album 'Sounds That Can't be Made'. I think you'll be very touched by that song and maybe it will figure among your favorite masterpieces of recent times compositions.
This song was demoed for their previous album, so Roger did some work on it with Rick, for one reason or another it was not included on Famous last words.
you should check out the first album by Supertramp. Self titled. They were unknown, Try "maybe I'm a beggar::. I was a disk jockey at a free form radio station in late 60s, early 70s. The album arrived one day from the record distributor as many odd and obscure ones did. It was not released to the public until about 7 years later in north america. The cover intrigued me so I gave it some airplay and got positive feedback. It was a great album, different from later stuff. Their second album really sucked although the use of bagpipes by a rock band was a new one on me, LOL.
Class act. On par with Steely Dan, almost
Hide in your shell. Crime of the century, Doug.
Where did you learn Doug? I love you can do that. Show us
I’ve never heard that song, but wow, that was actually kind of heavy for Supertramp. I was surprised.. it was a cool song though, and I don’t think it’s dated at all I mean granted it talks about general McCarthy and stuff like that, accusing people of being spies, and all that sort of thing but I don’t know has that all really changed?? I’d say this song is more alarmingly prophetic than anything else because it practically predicted chaos and we are now in the age of chaos
I always liked the Rodger songs best, but i could sing along with Rick much easier (more my range). Do not misunderstand, some of my favs are indeed Rick songs 😁🤟
This song plus Kate Bush's "Sensual World" and Bryan Ferry's "Boys and Girls" feature some of Gilmour's finest playing of the '80s outside of Pink Floyd. That third movement with the "horns" sounds like a Synclavier, which was all the rage then.
Check out Mcartney's No More Lonely Nights for more 80s Gilmour. He poached Helliwell and Scott Page for the Floyd that followed.
I posit Dalbello's "Immaculate Eyes" and Berlin's "Pink & Velvet" as some of Gilmour's finest work in the 80s.
To further the Supertramp/Pink Floyd overlap, John Helliwell returned David Gilmour's favour and played on Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of reason a few years later.
John claims he's still waiting for the payment. They even mis-spelt his name on the sleeve
Doug, after this, I guess, it is high time to listen to Valentyne suit by Colosseum, Ice by Camel, and Islands by King Crimson :)
I'd been a Supertramp fan from the start, but who was this David Gilmour helping out on guitars? Little did I know. I used to love the flute section by Scott Page too! BWYB perhaps was a too depressing subject to be popular?
The Saxahpone was David Gilmour and a lot of guitar too,.
What?!
My sugestion for a new reacts... "EVEN IN THE QUIESTEST MOMENTS" -Supertramp
In my opinion this album is better than any of Roger's solo albums. And this song is a masterpiece which just got better for me now that I know Gilmour is playing the guitar in it.
Brian Lane (manager of Roger Hodgson and YES) tried to get Roger to either write some music for YES or to try and write with Jon Anderson. The other members of YES thought that Jon's lyrics were getting to be too "airy fairy."
Brian Lane also suggested Roger as a replacement for Jon Anderson when he was "retired" from the band.
It might have been an interesting meshing of sounds.
Long for Supertramp
Right. The first word I think when I think Supertramp ("You're bloody well right"). But Supertramp, another pianodriven band. Also, Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy) on rhythm guitar, btw.
Yeah. I've bought a Best of years ago, but from this album only Cannonball is on it. Then again, a Best Of is to convince you to buy other albums anyhow, right? ... Right, you're...
Personally, I'm trying to collect many long form songs (on CD) the last few years. Such as Illumination Theory by Dream Theater (2013)at 22:17, Stratovarius - Elysium (2011) at 18:05., Tool - Third Eye (1996) at 13:47 and well, in one single track Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth (2015) at 24:01.
Dear Doug, it looks like you are reading the spoken-word quotes grom the intro off your computer screen.
Is there a website where they can be found?
I appreciate your channel so much, thanks for all your wonderful insights.
Yes. Genius.com does a good job with lyrics
If you think you know Supertramp, your in for a surprise
Gilmore is Great
Gilmour
I allways felt like the middle (short) section was kind of a tribute to Ummagumma, from Pink Floyd
Doug I have a request can you please crank up the volume on your pod cast a little. Compaired to other pod casts You come acrost a little low on volume, thanks.
Would love to hear you listen to and analyze MIke Oldfields OMMADAWN!
An album I forgot I had! I probably haven’t played it for 35 years!! I’m going to give it a proper play. Classic Supertramp, I think it was downhill from here onwards. Thanks Doug.
John Helliwell played on David's album first and David returned the favor.
Have you heard of the band Happy The Man. A reaction to "Contemporary Insanity" will be worth while.
Well, Roger was no longer there, and Roger's guitar style is somewhat similar to David Gilmore (this is why I love Roger's guitar playing), so why not David?
Gilmour, not Gilmore
The cold war doesn't exist anymore? Sorry to have to tell you this, Doug, but it's back.
David Gilmour’s guitar screaming out in the middle slow section (around 14:40), and you’re focusing in piano chords and harmonic analysis, oh maaan!! 😅
Did you not hear "L'International" along with Big Brother in the beginning?
Doug, I dare you to do Amarock by Mike Oldfield. It will blow your mind.
Doug, I double dare you. Someone needs to react to Amarok.
@@albarton7189Yes! Thanks Al. It would be a very long video though.
Home Free is an a cappella group but worth watching.
listen to a lot of Floyd so far and still don't recognize influence on intro?
Man of constant sorrow by Home Free.
Hey, please react to the Brazilian palinho nogueira samba em preludio
