Occasionally in work Settings I have found that when a"can I touch your hair vampire" approaches loudly with there arm extended reaching -I reach for their hair too and it INSTANTLY caused them to stop in their tracks.😄😄😄
My hair texture is exactly like yours. When I stretch it and wear it out people just lose their minds. Always, "Is that real?", "Can I touch it?", "How do you get your hair like that?" So annoying!! Even if I wear a scarf I still get a million questions. The attention is overwhelming so I just keep it in a bun most days!!
Just be thankful you were given something that no other people on earth have. How on earth were black people convinced they have something bad when in fact afro hair is EVERYTHING!!
This will be a very interesting discussion. I'm already thankful for the topic. I had a coworker ask me before how long it takes me to do my hair. My response, 'Oh I dunno, what's the average rate of time for you brushing your teeth?' Her facial expression changed realizing maybe her question was inappropriate. Being the only black female in my office, I have to keep my guard up. Ask me the same questions you ask your peers and stop focusing on your facination with our skin and hair.

At their age they should now by know different ethnic groups have different features and cultures, and if they don't, they should read a book or watch a video and not ask stupid questions. I had 60 year old asking such questions 🙄. Nope. Get out of your racial bubble and meet other different people!!!!!

I'm in the military and when I was stationed at Fort Bragg in 2011 I had a First Sergeant, black woman, say I need to do something with my hair. Something I will never forget. It was in a very short, curly twa. Well within regulation. 😌
As African-Americans we have this thing inside of our subconscious I like to call the internal slave master you know that part of the brain that says black people don't do this black people don't do that you got nappy hair you're too dark that part of the brain that's what your sergeant suffer from we all suffer from it one degree or another the real severe cases are the ones we call American Creole they used to have a paper bag test if you were darker than a paper bag you cannot marry them

@@georgetrusty7696 I was an adult when I witnessed a firsthand account of whyte people getting inaccurate information from a self-hating black woman. I wanted to sink inside myself & disappear watching this woman make herself a fvcking slave right there in public without shame(without any self-awareness whatsoever). I had a come apart & removed myself before I physically attacked her. It made my experience working with her very traumatic. I couldn't undo what she did but I became someone known to my whyte coworkers as "confrontational" and "problematic" because they could not have the same interactions with me that they had with the other black women I worked with. But one thing they did was respect me. I never took my foot off their necks when it came to that.
Ahahahaha not "hold on Becky" 🤣🤣🤣. My answer to them when asked is "can i pet you back". Conversation over. Most usually laugh and get exactly why i said it. Others are like "wait, what u mean" and i say think about it for a second. And turn around and go on about my business.
I can't believe how well I can relate lol. The worst ones for me are those who don't believe its my hair. I'm a Dominican guy with type 4 hair. But since I have borderline fair skin they think its impossible.
My story begins with me standing in line at the grocery store when an older lady of color was standing behind me very close, so close that I proceeded to move to up a bit to add space between us, but every time I moved away, she would move closer to me. She then asked where I purchased my wig, in shock I proceeded to tell her that my hair was not a wig and indeed real.
Apparently, that wasn't good enough, her reply to me was may I touch it. Being that she was a senior citizen and deserved a pass I told her yes. The first thing she did was dig her fingers deep into my scalp to see if there were any tracks. She than says...wow you go girl your hair is so thick and full.
I guess my response to her that my hair was real wasn't good enough. SMH
I have thick hair too and Ive had Black people ask me if my hair was real. Like yes it is possible to be a nonmixed Black woman and have a head full of long hair 🙄
Some black people sadly didn’t know this. But I think the natural hair movement has increased awareness of black people having a lot of hair.

@@kymthompson7239 what a lot of us don’t realize is that our hair can be unrealistically thick. I had a friend who treated her hair really bad, but yet it was so thick it looked like a wig. It looked like somebody had attached a whole lot of thick long clip-ins in her head. But guess what ? It was all hers. I knew before that she had a lot of hair, but that some were clip ins. Another friend shaved a third of her hair off, but you still couldn’t tell that it was shaved for it was a lot of hair.

I went natural for good in 2008. I have received weird dumb comments and questions from black people and non black people. I was surprised how ignorant some of us are about natural hair. Some of the questions I find either bizarre or very rude. Fortunately it’s gotten better over time and I don’t get these comments as much. I think partly because there is a lot of natural in commercials and tv shows.

@@sassymedea3065 So many but the WEIRDEST was once I walked into a bar I frequent and this drunk white woman came up to me and hugged me like she is so relieved saying “oh I’m so glad you’re here.” I’m thinking WTF. I play music at this bar sometimes so I didn’t know if maybe she was a fan or just crazy. Then she touches my hair and goes “your hair is so beautiful. Are you mixed?” I say No. Then she tells me her teen daughter is pregnant by a black guy and she’s scared because she doesn’t know how she will do the hair. I’m thinking so you just walk up to random black people and hug them? 🤨

I’m so glad and thankful for the natural hair movement and my stylist who convinced me to give up the creamy crack 20 plus years ago. Even then I wore my hair flat ironed, occasionally wore weaves or straight half wigs. I didn’t wear my natural curly hair until 10 years later. I was so afraid of what my job and people at work would say. Everyone expects you to assimilate and it’s awful that out hair was caught up in those judgmental and often unrealistic beauty standards. There were creators starting out on UA-cam and I looked to them to guide me on how to take care of my hair, to style it and to give me courage to my hair curly hair proudly. I actually influenced others at work to do the same thing.We’d share routines and talk about curly hair care products. There are people that are there now not just wearing natural curly hair, but locs, twists, crochet styles, braids, etc. It was nice to be a part of a culture and movement of people that changed the landscape of my office and the mindset of those who would traditionally stand in judgement or protest against natural hairstyles.
I am a 42 year old white woman from the UK with dark blonde type 4 kinky/coily hair but euro texture hair and I take after my grandfather for it.
We are unsure of any heritage we have as a family.
Throughout my life people have approached me with a glazed look and a hand outstretched towards my hair... I could be in a queue waiting for anything to being with my two sons who are used to people stopping me.
Yesterday being the most recent day.
I have had many positive comments but also racist undertone comments towards me because of my hair. 'Why would you want it like that?' to straight up disgusting racial slurs based on my mousey coily hair which I'm sure looks odd to them...
And those two questions 'is it real..can i touch it?' are the questions I wish I had a pound for each time I heard them.
Just a big thank you for this channel that taught me what my mom (big waves hair) and friends from my younger years could not.
Thankfully as I've got older friends with true afro hair have been able to help me.

@@celi9133 yes probably for some but in Liz's case this isn't true for everybody 😉but to be honest Europe modern populations are capable of any hair shape and texture and aren't really limited to straight wavy and curly hair which are also present in southern Asia the pacific and Africa not just Europe.

I’m in England and here reactions to natural hair may be on the more subtle side.
I don’t get strangers asking to touch my natural hair. I’ll usually get some stares or someone will compliment me and go about their day. I won’t forget the time I saw this man on a bike was cycling towards me and looking at me. He said “your hair looks great I really like it” I stayed calm and said thank you with a smile. I kept walking and he kept cycling. As it should be.
My main negative experience was when I stopped wearing my straight hair wigs and started wearing my natural hair to work. I had a few compliments but it was clear people preferred me in straight hair. I didn’t really care but it may have bothered me ever so slightly. Pleased to say I have grown since then.
It’s been 2.5 years since I wore wigs and I’m comfortable in my natural hair now. I usually rock twists as a protective style. I’m about 4.5 years natural and I’m loving my hair.
My boyfriend says if anyone stares it’s because they’re in awe and are loving my look. I reckon he’s right because our natural hair is beautiful. 🥰
Man...dropped my phone I lost my comment (accidently discarded). Anyway... Your video reminds me of an experience I had in 2005. I was a hospital clerk...and this black nurse (not mixed but from a Spanish country) had long relaxed hair, and I touched her hair. 😩 She yelled out, "DON'T TOUCH MY HAIR!!" I was about 46, and she was 37 to 40 years of age. I was traumatized! Her reaction scared me...never in my life...had I experienced such a reaction over hair. Turns out, her black Spanish background believed a woman with short hair (me) touching her hair would cause her to lose her hair (hair fallout/like a transfer of negative energy). I was so embarrassed because she yelled it out, and we were both black. And everyone around us was white. Their faces was like, "What just happened?" Strange thing is my hair grew to my armpit before my big chop in 2019 (relaxed). But you knoww...I will never touch anyone's hair like that again. 😂😂
I am very glad you don't care what others think because it truly only matters what you think and how your hair makes you feel. The bottom line is that everyone has opinions but I have to say I adore your hair. It is striking and not boring and most people would simply be just jealous because it gets attention. Own your hair and your outer and inner beauty. You are a diamond.
I've experienced similar things with people touching my hair. When you're young and cute, and don't seem intimidating, some people are extra bold. Honestly, it made me meaner and more aggressive toward other people, as a defense mechanism. I could see people being bold, since you're pretty, petite, and have a pleasant personality. It's unfortunate that we get judged as "angry black women", when look what we go through?

I have found non-black men have been more accepting of my natural hair. I have had a few compliments about my natural hair from black men but the overwhelming number of compliments come from white men.
I think it’s very clear now that many black men have a lot of self hate. It’s time to stop expecting them to suddenly admire natural black features. It’s just not going to happen. But it’s fine - other men will appreciate us.
@@hc7092 exactly a history of self-hate passed on through generations and constantly trying to live up to European standards- the oppressors. Blacks have been conditioned to not value their beauty. I have a head full of freeform locs. People of a certain color ask if they can touch my hair. First of all I don't know what kind of energy you're carrying around and I don't know where your hands have been so it's a straight up"No" in a nice way and I move on (quickly). I also have a pull over sweatshirt that says "yes this is my hair no you can't touch it." Then I get the ignorant questions...Is it hard to take care of? My answer, no I don't do anything but keep my hair clean and leave it alone. Is it hard to sleep on? Is it heavy? Then you have the ones who insist on trying to touch your hair. Then you have to dodge and back away. Honesty, this is 2022 they should be used to seeing black people rocking their Awesome hair already!!! That's my rant. Love this video! Thank you for the great advice. It's even worse when people of color, including African-Americans, want to touch my hair to see if it's real. That happened to me at the airport years ago on my way to my honeymoon. Back then I had relaxed hair. Now, I'm natural. My hair type seems very similar to yours but I'm going gray. I put it away a lot to avoid attention, which is sad.

I think this applies to all black people. My hair is long and relaxed but I use a roller set to get big curls. People always want to stroke my hair like I'm a damn golden retriever. Ugh. It's so invasive.

I am 65 years old and no one has ever asked to touch my hair. Only thing that came close was a lady asked how I get my hair so curly. And yes we were the only black family in a neighborhood once. Now my kids did get a lot of crap at their school during that time to where I had to show my self.

When I started to grow my hair, I got some positive and negative responses from it. One person said that is that your hair for the winter. I just wanted something different and I look forward to growing my afro.
I would never ask anyone if I could touch their hair but I will acknowledge when someone's hair is beautiful especially when it has volume, which my hair lacks. It's purely out of jealousy. I always just think the bigger the better. I am mixed and I have curly hair but I'm always envious when others can have so many different hair styles. My hair is kind of just flat, despite products. It literally is the fact that I am in awe because it's that B E A U T I F U L.
I find the positive comments aren't really positive at all...they are usually wrapped in bad intentions. Kinda like a backhanded compliment. Beware of them.

At homecoming i wore my hair out and i was in the car with my friends and in the back were some of my friends and one of them told me my hair was big and and asked me if she could touch it i didn’t want to say no because i didn’t wanna seem rude, then a boy was sitting next to me in the car (one of my friends date) and my other friend said hey your hair is in his face and they all started to laugh so i felt embarrassed and i said i’m sorry to him and he was like no you’re good

Believe me some do this. I’ve had it happen to me. But most times black people will at least ask first. One time I told a black guy in Walmart no and he started cussing at me. I didn’t care. I didn’t want some strange man touching on me.

My last relaxer was 2008 and I would be lying if I said I have never had a black person stick their hands in my natural hair. It didn’t all happen in one place. But like I said most black people who’ve touched my hair asked me first if they can touch my hair. Some of the ones who didn’t bother to ask were older women. Actually I have a former coworker with long relaxed hair who told me she has had older black women stick their hands in her hair to weave check her. they thought she is lying and were looking for tracks. Interesting how you speak of code because my experience with older black women is they don’t generally hold their tongue or respect boundaries of a younger black woman. Maybe you and I are different cultures.

I'm moving from Georgia to Nebraska in about a week and I'm definitely nervous about how people will react to my hair. Its type 4a.

@@Naturalista91 same experience as Sharmaine. People tried to touch my hair and act like idiots when they see it. I had one girl take photos of me laughing at my hair. I’d get stared at wherever I went and get asked stupid questions. When I met my bf (who’s white) he acted pretty normal, complimented my hair all the time and still does to this day a year later. When I moved to central NE, there were a few biracial kids and yeah their parents would have them looking crazy and obviously didn’t attempt to care for their hair. The kids would stare at me and the parents would ask me how I manage my hair, so I’d refer them to the UA-cam tutorials I watch, which then they’d roll their eyes. I moved to Omaha back in February of this year. It’s a bit more diverse but not as diverse as GA, and it’s so nice to be able to find hair care products and boutiques that cater to my hair type.

No one has ever asked to touch my hair accept a friend after I became natural. She is also natural. I have noticed that most compliments come from males and predominantly Caucasian males which is a little odd to me! One friend, however, said that natural hair is not for everyone so I don't think I should perceive that as a compliment.

😄 no doubt you literally took them by Suprise because this belief they've been given that wts only have long straight hair and that individuals brown or ebony only have thick curly hair which of course isn't true BUT it's because they like most people dont know that hair isnt actually race pacific that they were curious about you

I'm noticing more and more bi racials taking more pride in their natural hair then actual full black women. Don't come for me just an observation and if it don't apply let it fly. Natural black women are gorgeous.

I see wat u mean. A lot of people with tighter more corse hair want it to be more similar to wat most perceive as ” mixed hair”. I hope that research can find a way to permanently make our hair more silky and unkinked. From the root. So people can make their hair tight curled if they like but can have easy to comb silky hair. That’s me. My rough thick hair being natural would make you cry but I’m thankful it grows long. I relax it. ///. They don’t like black peoples hair but they won’t stop themselves from selfishly satisfying themselves by asking us questions about our hair. Sometimes close acquaintances try it by taking advantage of out niceness in a moment. Don’t touch or ask us how often we wash our hair unless you wanna wake up with our hair growing out of your own head when you wake up tomorrow morning. 😒 Okayy ??

Your hair is beautiful but since you look white it confuses people. I see lots of black women with beautiful hair but you expect it because they are black. You get compliments and envious looks and you sound snobby about it.
