  • In this episode I answer the question I get often of "How do I design a zine".
    Sketches Of Light Zine available here :: bit.ly/sketches...
    Months ago I made an episode on how I go about sequencing and building the initial concept of my zines. I showed how I made the initial layout for my first zine in that video ( • How to Design a Zine |... ).
    In this video, we dive into Indesign, and I give you the absolute most basic tools for laying out your own zine, and being able to do so in a matter of hours. My hopes in making this video, is that it would dispel any fears of designing in Adobe's Indesign, and show you just how easy and painless the whole process actually is.
    These videos are part of a larger series, entirely focused on building photo zines from start to finish. The entire series has been cataloged in this playlist ( • Photo Zine How To Series )
    I by no means claim to be an expert on the topic, however I experienced quite a bit through the process of making my zines, and am happy to share the highs and lows of what I experienced.

    Great Video! This is how I produced my photo book as well. I was in commercial printing for over 20 years. Just a couple of notes that may help to ensure you get the best quality possible. Depending on the printer you use, they may require CMYK. Many programs and cameras shoot in RGB. If you send off RGB files to a printer and their "RIP" a.k.a. computer that parses all of this into plates, there will be a shift in tone and color if using. CMYK separations can be done in Photoshop CS or CC. Also, save your files as TIFF files at 300 DPI as these are non-destructive unlike JPGs. They are also heavier files and will ensure all of the detail that you worked on in Photoshop will remain. Lastly, for the PDF output options, check the "compression" area and make sure all of the compression is turned off. This will make a large PDF file, and once again, all of your details will be in the final product. My photo book is 48 pages, 8.5x11 full color and my final PDF file was over 1GB! It printed beautifully though. Great job and I always look forward to your videos!

    I wish I found your page two books ago! I'm working on my third hummingbird book and this time i'm doing it in InDesign. you are correct so much easier i can't believe what i put myself through in photoshop! i know it's six years later but i hope you can help. i photograph a lot of hummingbirds perched on branches. when i am doing full spreads i learned today by watching your video to copy and paste the image and bring each image to the center of the each side of the page. i did notice when I previewed the page it was white but when i exported it showed. so i am not making those modifications. but here is the question, is InDesign smart as in the branches will align properly when printed as it shows on the screen? when i hit "w" preview mode it looks perfect.
    in your printing experience with gutters do i need to adjust my images to ensure the branches continue flawlessly from one page to the next?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому

      Hey thank you so much! And Ive never used Microsoft Publisher, am I correct in thinking that indesign is a bit more robust in its functionality than publisher? I've been getting questions about this lately.

    • @juliussmit7886
      @juliussmit7886 6 років тому

      Yes, Indesign is certainly more robust in its functionality than Microsoft Publisher! There are also really good aspects to Indesign in terms of a wide range of fonts (also via Type Font), and how it is easy to import and edit using Bridge to get to Photoshop and Illustrator files. Indesign does at first look daunting to the newcomer, but yes, it pays dividends to explore and stick with it, as you are doing so wonderfully well! I am so envious of your printed output. A6 size is the nearest I can track down to an online printer, here in the UK.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому +1

      Hey thanks for the kind words. It’s definitely something I do want to follow up on. The schedule tends to get the better of me, and this time I lost track of doing so for the zine shown in this video. However, I am about to start on a new zine project, and have the utmost intention to record as much of the process as I can along the way. Showing the culling and pairing of the images, to the initial conception, design and design process. Then sharing the cost factors along the way, and explaining why I choose some of the options based off of cost, or manufacturer capabilities. If all that makes sense. So if everything goes well, I may have an entire series releases all around the one zine from start to finish. And by all goes well I mean whether or not I remember to turn the cameras on along the process. Lol. Either way, thanks for the kind words. I hope to see you on future videos :)

      Nick Exposed hi Nick, it's basically going to be a documenting of my time in Nice, France through a thematic lens. I'm interested in the arbitrary use of colour in the city and how that led to, or is symptomatic of, the arbitrary use of colour in the work of Henri Matisse and others associated with the art movement, Fauvism. A mouthful I know, but the work should certainly be colourful! :) I just flew home last night so I've got lots developing to do first

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому +4

      You're very welcome Federico! Thanks for the kind words and enthusiasm. To answer your question, I dont typically record settings, so I have nothing to reference in order to share. Also, my zines are based on concept, not on individual images, so the settings would be irrelevant anyways. In the future I may partner geographic location or story with the images, but at this point that is all the farther I would probably go with it. Thats not to say including these things is improper, it's just not a focal point of my projects. Thanks for asking, and I hope to hear you were able to start your zine sooner rather than later :)

    Nice video! I’m defiantly going to give using indesign a shot for a zine project!
    Bit of critique in your video style though (this will likely get better as you make more videos), you tend to repeat yourself and waffle on for extended periods of time. I assume you have a bullet pointed structure in front of you but not a script, which is cool, but it causes you to vamp often to fill time.

    Hey! Super helpful video, it got me started in InDesign for my first big zine. I have a question though, what if I only want the bleed to show up with the cutting marks, but WITHOUT that extra white border? Can't seem to figure that one out.

      Unfortunately I am not very well versed, I simply know enough to get my projects done 😅. I hope you might be able to find another video helping you in this area.

    Amazing video! Just wanted to know how did you design the cover page and how you get the rounded edges on the pages?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 місяців тому

      The company I went through for printing was able to die cut the rounded corners. The cover design was done in photoshop if I remember correctly. It’s been a while.
      Glad you found the video helpful

    Hi Nick! I was wondering: when you export the file in a pdf
    1- I'd like to use an image for the cover/back cover (half and half), how should I print the images together to bind them?
    2 - We did a manual draft for our photozine and we use A4 pages folded. Im not able to understand how I replicate that in indesing.
    Sorry for my broken english, im from argentina, I loved your video, thanks for the help.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому

      Sorry for the delayed response. You would set up the A4 size when setting up the file. And the first page and last page of the file will be the cover and back cover, so you would split the image between both of those. The printer you go through will make sure its all laid out properly when you get the file over to them. I hope that makes sense and helps out.

    This was very helpful. I've got a training DVD for inDesign and a book but never felt ready to dive in. Your just-the-basics approach was very welcome. Questions: With the Mela café photo, why didn't you just enlarge it slightly rather than place a duplicate underneath and shifted over to cover that sliver of white paper? If you were to enlarge it, could you do that inside inDesign or is that something you have to do in Photoshop before exporting? I'm asking because I think you have pixels to spare. Your book was 5 inches high and I assume your printer required a resolution of somewhere between 225 to 300 pixels per inch. An iPhone 6 is 8 megapixels, or about 3500 pixels on the long side, and you only needed 1500 or so ... What am I overlooking or misunderstanding?

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому

      The reason I didnt simply enlarge it was I didnt want the curl of the M to get cut off any more than it had to. If I would have enlarged it the crop and bleed would have been closer to the apex of the M. Does that make sense. By simply duplicating the layer and allowing that to hangover, I remove any white bar that may have resulted in the crop being slightly misaligned, but also kept the character of the M in tact.

    Great video but the only thing I'd like to know are some suggestions for places that will print these custom PDFs I've designed in InDesign.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 років тому

      I prefer to go through local print shops. They have always been able to print the PDFs I send them. Look for shops that print the flyers and pamphlets of local businesses in your area. If you ask them for a staple clubs booklet they will know what you mean.

    Fantastic tutorial, so incredibly detailed and helpful. Thank you for doing this! I'm just a little confused about the order of content. I made a mock zine on paper, but will the spreads on InDesign print everything on the proper physical pages in the right order? For instance, page 1 on InDesign is a single page (front cover). Is page 2 (spread 2, containing page 2 and 3) the inside of the front cover? Making page 3 the first page of the second physical paper, etc? So we just input our content in the InDesign spreads in the order we want, and it will print double sided correctly?

    Great video, Nick, Matt Day said you were the place to start with making a zine and so far so good. I am stuck with doing a grid. Do you have a video on how to start a grid, and how to modify it for each page that has a different photo placement? I haven't been able to figure out how to copy a grid. Thanks for the great videos!

    so basically I set up my whole zine using the inches that you used which I didn't realize that it was that small so i am doing with 5.5 x 8.5. Is there any shortcut to automatically changing everything I put on that size or would I have to start from scratch?

    For the photos that overhang, i did as you told, bring the spread further out of the page so it wont show white bars when printed.
    But when i preview my document and exported the document, the "extra part" that overhangs, actually shows up on the page next to it.
    Did i do something wrong? Can anybody help me with this?
    34:31 You did mention its not gonna show up on the next page but for me, it does. This video was made 2 years ago so im not sure if they updated that since? Adobe inDesign 2021 v16 i think
    UPDATE: Nevermind, i solved it kinda. I exported my document as facing pages. Apparently that makes a difference and im not sure why. When i turned off facing pages and exported it, it turns out well. Imma leave this comment here just incase anyone else have the same problem

  • @hamerovv

    It's faster to create master pages with the frames in them already so no need to make frames again and again. You'd consider to have verity o master pages with the different frames' sizes pre prepared. This way you don't need even to resize the frames and risk inconsistency

    Thanks for the tutorial. It worked perfect for until I tried printing it. I have my own printer, so I'm doing it at home. I'm printing black and white and the problem is the black levels comes out grey. They look good on the screen, but they look washed out as soon as I print them. I've tried to print the same images before I put them into Indesign, and then they look just as they are supposed to. I tried both printing directly from Indesign and the exported PDF, and both looks the same. Is this a common problem? Everything else about Indesign is so smooth and simple, so I would prefer to use it if I can get the results I want.

      Interesting. You may have gotten it figured out by now, I haven’t been able to keep up with comments as of late. If you found a solution please share it for the rest that may have the same issue. I hadn’t experienced that before, but have always had the print shop handle the printing.
