@K lake They are burning it for fun, because profit is fun to a corporation or company. Bear in mind that the profit motive takes away basic human needs by putting a price on them. If you don't have the money to pay for water, clothing, or food, you can't have access to it. Companies are forcing YOU to live the way they want you to live. Instead of having your guaranteed right to access your basic needs, you're forced to accept whether or not you deserve to have your needs satisfied. The "companies provide everything I need argument" is bunk.
I have a friend who graduated in environmental politics and went on to work at Danone at their environmental change division. She becale depressed really fast. Basically her work was "find a way for us to do less than the bare minimum to appear climate-consciencious". And she was overworked doing that. She wanted to make a difference, and that's really sad.
Hopefully it's not too late for a career change. It must feel like a grim situation, but then again, the person who exposed DuPont's waste dumping was a corporate lawyer whose career up to that point was representing and defending corporations. I thus recommend watching the movie "Dark Waters" for inspiration.

Not greenwashing, but another issue that recently reared its head near me: Recently a car manufacturer wanted to cut down a about 200 years old forrest to build a factory there. Nearly all forests in my country were removed previous to the 18th century. That means that this forrest was one of the older ones in the country. Not only that, but over its two centuries of existence it developed a great ecosystem with many endangered species of bats. As a response many environmentalists started to protest the cutting down of the forrest. This was practically ignored by the media. That is, until some workers started counter protesting the environmentalists because they were afraid they would lose their jobs. And this did get a lot of media attention. For people who do not realise what this is: the capitalist class/the company in question are using the liberal media to put the workers and the environmentalists against each other, divide and conquer. The truth is that both these groups, or rather both the forrest and the workers, are the victims of the capitalists that are exploiting them. The factory doesn't *need* to be built there. As for the government, it handed out the permit to cut down the forest pretty much right away. This is in violation of laws that say it should protect endangered species, and proves once again that the government too serves the capitalist class.

Some good news: yesterday a wood owl was found in one of the trees, and upon that the local government decided that that tree, as all others in a 75 meter radius around it could not be cut down. Still, that doesn't change that a huge ecosystem has veen destroyed. Videos circulated of deer and other animals fleeing the forrest a few days ago. Facebook also wanted to build a huge datacentre here, which would be a massive pollutant and would be a huge burden on our water reserve and electricity network. The local government of where it was to be built was all in favour, even leftist parties. Luckily it was blocked by the senate just in time, at least for now. It may still be allowed to be built later.

Agreed. I remember being younger, seeing ads like these, and saying “oh thank god they have it handled!” But I got older and saw more situations like the butterfly reserve he mentions in the video. Now I don’t trust any of the programs that large corporations try to tout.
This channel is such a guide for me on our collective way forward. I'm currently in China where concern for climate is lukewarm because many other things threaten our sense of security (but I guess capitalism still plays a big part) and people just don't have a means to meaningfully, safely and effectively express political will. I wish I can be a part of change in some way eventually and thank you for what you do! It's so important~
Still China's per capita emissions, consumptions, waste, etc (every conceivable negative metric) is many times lower than that of the US and other developed countries.
While many of their clients are fossil fuel companies, and other mining companies causing real damage to the environment and people in the global south. Are banks going to be green enough as to ditch such customers?

I love how one of the examples of greenwashing is praising carbon capture, which is just "let's throw even more money at the problem instead of dealing with it at the source! We need to keep making money!" It's so funny.
The solution is free. I would say that anything you can buy in this world, is a waste. Nothing of it is needed, the need for it is created through private ownership and the will of not restricting the free market. In the real world you would be able to drink natural streams of water, your waste would go back to nature without implications. Everything is destroyed in this world, we are no longer living our life as intended.
Such an important topic to cover, especially as more and more companies switch towards "sustainable" versions of their already-detrimental products. Those first two sections really hit close to home, more consumption will never lead to less impact. Great video!

I’ve been refusing to drink Nestle’s arrowhead water ever since finding out that they’re drawing from a spot in California based on an expired permit (since 1988). Hopefully CA manages to shut their operation down soon. Obviously the whole company sucks but this one action hits closer to home for me.
I know Adidas and Levi's have also been hyping their efforts to become green. I think some of their efforts to reduce waste and make fashion more sustainable are real, but until the entire business model changes, it's still mainly about marketing how green they are to customers who care.
Add Shell to that. Their pipes keep polluting the Niger Delta yet their add are full of Sustainability this, clean future that, they even had Jennifer Hudson singing in one cringy ad campaign here in Europe.
Companies will generally never care about the environment, or at least, actually do something meaningful that'll help the environment because their goal is to make money. Unless we coerce them with laws to do so, and properly enforce them, most companies won't do anything that's actually meaningful(such as cut their emissions by a huge amount, and being honest about it)
I agree, under capitalism no company can actually operate ethically with human and planetary health in mind since the capitalist system requires profits, requires growth instead of de-growth and requires poverty in order to maintain it's pathetic existence. rat The path forward, maybe has to do with enforcing or demanding certain laws, but I find that is too much patch work and not enough getting to the source of the problem. The problem is capitalism. We need a mass movement of the people to protest capitalism and demand a peaceful transition towards a resource-based economy (no money required). Here's the catch: It would probably require the demand for a Universal Basic Income because the major oppressor in life right now is labor-for-income and if we can remove the oppression of labor so that people can have their basic needs met without wage slavery then, well then, we can truly have time and energy to transition. Peter Joseph of TZM has a great book and also lectures on the 5 great transitions: Access, Automation, Localization, Open Source and Digital Network Feedback. Those transitions are started already but to make any meaningful dent we would need a pretty mass global protest that has the right focus to sustain itself.
I work in a company that tries to create a sustainable image. They sell different flours, grains and similar baking/cooking products that are mostly packaged in plastic with the assumption that they were at least milled/made by the company. In reality they mill maybe 20% of what they sell and the rest is just stuff from other companies that package their product in plastic/cardboard/paper bags. We put it into tote bages then it's packaged and resold at 2-4x the original price. A lot of the stuff comes from big names like Blue Diamond almond flour or Red Star yeast. Yeah, all that trash, plastic and resources it takes to move all of that just for profit is not sustainable.
I literally just handed in my final thesis about greenwashing TODAY. One hour later he posts a video that explains the topic better than I could within 100 pages
I know that my personal carbon footprint is peanuts compared to a company, but this is exactly why I start all new purchase by looking at it. By looking at my footprint first and understanding where it is worse, that lets me look at a general category like “transportation” in order to try to find greener options. This further lead me to decide to use a bike to get to the train and take that to work in order to reduce my emissions. Compare this to watching a car ad which says “buy our Tesla in order to save the planet!” Sure, my emissions would technically be better than driving a gasoline car, but I also miss out on that HUGE improvement by using public transportation!
I also think it’s important to consider electricity is not made equal everywhere. Many places use coal burning to create electricity which is used to charge electric cars. Also, batteries for those cars are very bad for the environment when they break down and the materials harvested for the battery are not sustainable. Electric cars have potential but they are not there yet imo

It really is hard to be even slightly eco conscious these days. Sometimes I need to take a break from all the environmental news for a day or two while I just relax and recharge.
Almost all problems could be solved very simply by making it financially worthwhile for people to SHARE the jobs we can agree we NEED people to do and work much LESS...no more of this insane infinite growth system on a finite planet ...no more unemployment or job shortages, no more doing any useless jobs, Just a world where everyone fit and healthy is SHARING in doing the work we can agree we NEED to have done. Of course that would end up with making money become completely pointless and that's actually the goal, it's not and has never been 'money' that we NEED.

"End capitalism." But the key question is "How?" Every action we have attempted to end capitalism has been ruthlessly crushed to death by capitalist forces. They have put too much money and power into maintaining capitalism to the death.
I dont think people understand the system, the religion we currently have. They think they are free minded and can do whatever they want. If you have that belief, nothing will change. If people wake up and realise how wrong and messed up everything is today, things would change fast.

Second Thought posted a video a few weeks about the tactics businesses and politicians use to stop positive social change. Co-opting titles and movements and using their stage to soften the movements purpose. Its very insidious.
we need more 'things you can do right now to help' vids. charities, who/which political figures you can direct attention/email/contact concerns over, what local groups can help replace dependencies on corrupt industries, charities that help lobby against corporate legislations/ so on
Identity politics, be it about racism or ostracism of any minority, and even feminism, are just divide tactics to make workers unable to work together against corporations, banks and politicians. There is one true fight, and it's the one for socialism and communism. All other are just diversions. Before that watch Non-competes video on this topic, the title of which is "which is worse capitalism or r@c!sm" Capitalism is re-enforced by homphobia and sexism and they in turn re-enforce capitalism. You can't get rid of one while keeping the other, you have to work on dismantling all forms of oppression at the same time. It takes a lot to do it, so grab the closest oppression you find and work on making it not exist.
@@8lec_R I already read about it, this is how I came to the conclusion that first we must defeat capitalism before these, because you literally can't do both at the same time. If you do it like that, like in my case with transphobia, you lose your energy going after other workers, that are usually transphobic because of their working frustration, energy better directed into unionizing against owners
Excellent informative video! While I personally agree that capitalism is a big part of the climate crisis we are in right now, I think that mixing climate content with proposals to end capitalism makes it a lot more inaccessible for many people, especially Americans... I'm not saying it's wrong to make this conclusion, I'm just saying i think it's smarter to have more people on board with climate issues than to convince with the end goal. Just a thought... I agree with the information but not with the speculation, blaming "capitalism" is ignorant, without it we wouldn't have reached the industrial revolution and thus would be living in poverty, all of us. The system has its flaws but it's the best we got so far therefore it's a matter of improving it not replacing it with failed ideas that have been proven wrong many times before.
We did reach the peak, it was with unions, regulations and non-Neoliberal policies. Late stage shareholder capitalism has only encouraged negative actions to other humans, other animals and the environment as a whole. We must be able to survive with the basics and little more but supporting the excessive consumerism and “grey goo” problem of ever growing profits is in itself unsustainable but we lie to ourselves that we can afford the costs in the long term
@@kaptivatingstudios676 I admit that megacorporations whose only purpose is to keep growing regardless of the consequences is a big problem and it's probably the main cause behind the climate crisis and our inability to act upon it but "learning to survive with the basics" seems a waste of potential, it's not true that we're running out of resources, we're just pretty bad at managing them (again, because the larger forces don't care about long-term efficiency but profit). Capitalism works well because it doesn't rely on people "making the right choice" and that's why unions and politicians are not a solution either, they're human organizations and can be as corrupt as anything else. What we need is a system that runs by itself regardless of what people chose to do but also one that balances the greed with the sustainability, without greed there's no growth but too much greed and we have our current problems.
Great video and keep putting out solutions. We have to stop talking about issues and not giving solutions also we have to stop just talking about solutions. We need to create a much more robust network to coordinate and cooperate with local people to start acting now
The whole "a company's sole purpose is to generate profit" is actullay a point FOR regulation imo. If it's just about profit generation the fastest way might be to rob a bank (or maybe was at some point). But in general probably even neoliberal thinkers want companies to be useful to society in some way, right? Not just "generate profit" but also "provide a value". And by having environmental and other restrictions that value is increased (eg providing better health, or rather, not making people sick). If a car has no steering wheel and no brakes, then there better be some guide rails. Great video. You know how there have to be these huge "causes cancer" signs on tobacco products? (in some countries at least) It'd be nice if ads also had to include the environmental/social impact of a company "We planted 1000 trees! We also leaked 20k barrels of oil, release 10M tonnes of CO2 per year and bulldozed a town for out new refinery. Buy our stuff."

Literally any time a typical corporation does anything even remotely altruistic, it is always a carefully calculated move designed to increase profits, with any positive effects being secondary. It will always be way too small of an effect to counteract the harm that the company is doing.
Excellent video but what can we do to prevent greenwashing in a system that is promising to fruitfully combine free market and environmental protection? The problem is not only limited to the greedy elite as we are all addicted to consumerism.
The main content of the video is great and well-researched, but I think you really could do better on the thesis that arrives at 'dismantle capitalism'. This video jumped with a slight of hand from the extreme of neoliberal deregulation to capitalism bad always and vague gesturing of needs replacement now. This fails to make a convincing case for anyone but those already on board and critically examine why a current capitalist economy with much more regulation (incl. for information itself and lies corporations do) is not either enough or a steppping stone
Hey OCC, I've watch most of your videos and I simply wanted to make this comment regarding units of measurment. My point is: I don't mind the unit you take as long as you keep the unit consistent for the same task. For exemple, in the video you mentionned 252M gallon for an oil spill and previously you mentionned 6 million barrel for another oil spill. I know this may sound peaky but it's actualy the opposite. As an engineer who has work on the oil and gas side and on the green side I can assure you, units are the crux of the problem. Having consistent units help understand the true scale of the problem. Many of my friends understand and see the problem, too few understand the scale. The scale of the problem is what justifies your proposed solutions. I hope this comment find you well, Marc
Correct me if I am wrong, but I feel like Milton Friedmans position has been misrepresented here. He basically argues against social responsibility for big companies (and also government as it is a self-serving entity just like companies as well). If their only goal is to make a profit, at least you know what to expect from them. So to conclude, that he wants profit to be top priority is only true for companies, not societies as a whole. Companies are not supposed to handle social problems. He is a libertarian. He dislikes big companies but ackoledges their utility and praises the service they provide. He doesnt like big government because he believes most government actions are services that the market would handle more efficiently without the false philantropic virtue shield.
I feel the need to call a bluff on the oversimplification of Thomas Friedman viewpoints and labeling him as the source of corporate disowning of environmental stewardship… this was happening way before Friedman and continues regardless of him. Hold up… now I’m getting to the part where the author states “capitalism is the problem”…this too is a vast oversimplification of the human problem that reaches beyond and before “capitalism” was a thing… following this pejorative description the author provides very little in solution but platitudes.. I totally appreciate the idea of this video and I like that the author highlighted “green washing” as a thing. That was good, but then the author lost my support through making rash statements for the destruction of a system before there is a proper solution or alternative… rather… economics is the use of limited resources that have alternative uses… and with that in mind… everything is a trade off… nothing is the utopian vision that is used to “destroy” the present “system”. Please review history of the 20th century to find many examples of people destroying the present system only to make things much worse.
Yeah this is the problem I have with pure replacement strategies, you need a replacement system preestablished to make things work. Of course one part of the problem for why this happens so easily is that the human brain has evolved to simplify and categorize reality which makes the oversimplification of complex situations almost inevitable as all models of reality are to varying degrees oversimplifications of a much more complex system. There is some hint the author is aware this is a simplification with their mention of temporary intermediary policies but yeah there is a false dichotomy for a multidimensional framework of reality which can't be properly projected onto a line. Neoliberalism is an absurdly impossible system however from the stand point of thermodynamics as free market capitalism represents so virtually any change is an overall improvement.
I agreed with everything until the "End Capitalism" statement. This is a simplistic, naive statement. Capitalism is a very loose term and it doesn't define very much about a country's economy or the way it looks after it's people. China, Norway and the USA all have capitalism, but they are all vastly different. What we need are much better laws and better, enshrined rules that our governments and politicians must abide by. We need rigorous laws that prevent ANY corporate political donations. We need the most stringent conflict of interest regulations. We need strong independent anti-corruption watchdogs that can meter our harsh penalties. We need the powers of our leaders to be reeled back. We need tougher anti-authoritarian checks and balances. We need whistleblower protections, perhaps even reward them. We need corporations to be held socially and environmentally responsible for their actions. The list goes on. Ending corporate donations and influence is the big one by which all the rest would follow.

This is classic liberalism. I don't know how else to tell you this, but there is no "ethical capitalism". If you want to solve climate change it will not happen while capitalism still exists, in any form. This was literally in the video btw.
The recent example is Samsung and popular boy group. It's been happening for years. I just don't know if companies are really sincere with being a part of the solution of climate change or just riding the wave of promoting of going green on the outside.
It can be so overwhelming to learn about these greenwashing practices especially when it comes from such massive companies. My advice is to when possible chose not to buy their product and try to find a more local, less bullshitty brands But these companies need to be stopped in the way that they do things today

I have no problem with businesses pursuing profit to me that seems logical, what I have a problem with is the consumers that buy things they don't need or trust advertisement or forget the bad things companies do. The biggest frustration is with the government however, just like how a business should try to make a profit a government should hold the reigns and direct firmly what is allowed and what is not. Laws enforced with fines are laws for the poor not for the rich. I want a government seizing dangerous equipment and putting bans on corporations that have proven to be untrustworthy in causing public harm. The government's job is to protect and serve it's people, this includes educating them when they are being lied to, protect them when they are being harmed or avenge them when they get killed. To a business a workers death is a minor inconvenience they just get replaced by another but if this is followed by weeks of operation shutdown from investigation and forced implementation of worker safety standards then they will implement those safety standards themselves. Unfortunately especially in the USA bribes are legal under the lobby label, it is a bribe but they call it lobby. The system tells us these politicians take this much money from these corporations, they tell us they are taking bribes and yet we allow for it to continue. How can you expect the driver to steer us in the right direction when the horse is bribing the rider down hill and off of a cliff because in the short term it is the easier route? A government should be looking ahead to the future for generations, investing in infrastructure, ports, cities, dams so that one day those investments will benefit the people of that country, but now that the majority of government follows the will of the business the country will follow the business and the people are left to fend for themselves, now we can only tell each other we are being lied to, now we can only educate each other about the malpractices that go on behind closed doors. Now we have to take on the monumental task of righting the wrongs because there is no other way, we have to fix this ourselves by telling each other to protect and serve each other like a independent organism from the bigger whole, buying food grown nearby, taking care of each other where possible, and become less and less reliant on the bigger community, that is how you move to the right direction, one community at a time.
Great video as always! I can’t stand nestle and their green washing. I work in home tech sales and the way they spin coffee capsules as eco-friendly because they’re metal is infuriating. It’s all lies and caveats, with no accountability.

People do care and want to make a difference. That is the reason greenwashing campaigns are so successful and effective. These corporations are taking people's genuine concerns and awareness of environmental issues and exploiting them to do the exact opposite of what the people want, all in the name of profit. Just another sickening aspect of capitalism.

Consumers need to be aware of the true impact of their purchases. This would (ideally) convince companies to be transparent and sell sustainable products.
Sony just announced that they would plant a tree for every person who completed a certain achievement, up to 288,000 trees. People are patting them on the back for it and anyone who actually questions it gets shut down as 'being against a good thing'.
Does the consumer not have the ultimate ability for change by changing consumption habits. Surely this video just says ‘you can’t do anything cause it’s capitalism’ followed by ‘buy this thing I have to sell ie curiosity stream’
In the 'what we can change' part of the video, all says in general is that we should make 'actual' ethical company's and to essentially "do better". This is not only problematic, but also (as of yet) impossible because saying such a thing would allow bigger companies such as the aforementioned Nestle & Chevron to once again add more to their Greenwashing program; and to add more onto that it is quite impossible (as of yet) to have a business/company to even be 'actually' ethical as there are no possible mean in even being purely ethical and green and making financial profit out of it. The day we ever do somehow find a method to make actual financial profit out of (examples:) planting trees, recycling, and/or not dumping that weird black liquid from the corner of your drain which makes an ominous noise into our indigenous friends hole which they call a home; and that those companies/businesses aren't B companies, then there might actually be a chance to revitalise our planets global ecosystem. But hey, I'm just a random guy that just like any other person needs money. (Just a shame that there is no way that money can ever be green)
I wonder if there is some sort of middle ground to be found between helping the environment and appealing to the insatiable corporate greed. In other words I wonder if there is a way for these corporations to act in a climate positive manner as well as being beneficial to them some how as I feel that may be one of the few ways they would actually act is if it still benefits them in some way while in turn healing the Earth. Any thoughts?
Logically? Yes. Practically? No. I say that because I think public companies are just too beholden to their shareholders. They HAVE to turn a profit every single quarter and that profit HAS to increase every time. So I’m my opinion, our best option is to make the environmental actions the profitable ones. If we do that via regulation then we’ll also push a lot of companies to either go under or do more environmentally friendly actions. But we still need to eventually get away from this “grow forever” mindset.
@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet This is sort of the original theory behind capitalism, that there is this "invisible hand" which will always make the corporation's actions serve the better good through the profit motive, that being greedy is indirectly good for the world. It assumes that the market economy works as a democracy, we vote with our wallets, and the unethical businesses naturally go bankrupt. The theory behind capitalism is good, but it's painfully clear that this has not worked in practice. It's a failed experiment that refuses to stop. I think a lot of the problems come from the fact that money is not a good unit to measure social value. Companies can spread massive propaganda campaigns like the ones talked about in this video, to make it seem as if they do spread good social values, which gives them more profit, even if it's a lie. If anything, capitalism shows how being the most ruthless sociopath will make you financially succeed, even if it's socially destructive.

Despite what Apple has done in terms of packaging and internal recycling, they continue to sell an huge variety of plastic (oil-based) products, and even more third party products that are ridiculously superfluous... like AirPod, and plastic-based, iPhone cases, etc. Selling these products is incredibly counter-productive to whatever eco-advances they are making, IMO.
The worse greenwashing is the carbon tax and credit. By buying credits, a company can do the same as it was before and still claim it is carbon neutral. They then add the cost of the credits to the price of their goods or services. People THINK this is helping the carbon emissions, but it isn't. The companies selling the credits would be doing the same thing without the credits, but with a smaller profit margin.
A question regarding businesses under capitalism: If I were to start a business, would I be bound to increase profits as soon as I got investors that own a share of my company? Are there any other alternatives or is it all bound by law?
I do think when we can find ways to implement consumption degrowth in our own lives we can build up a strong enough ideal to hold companies accountable to the same standard. It's not individual action that the responsibility lies upon for the climate crisis (like the video says), but individual action does contribute to cultural mentality.
I got an advertisement about personal recycling, and how the Pacific Garbage Patch wasn't really the fault of U.S. consumers...🙄 Yeah, but it's generally our corporations putting out the plastic. If we went to glass and to biodegradable plastics wherever possible, worldwide, we'd have a lot less problems.
Where I live, most people would say that climate change is bad and we should prevent it (which obviously isn't enough), but no one seems to connect their words to their actions beyond using reusable bags. It's pretty depressing
one of the ones that annoy me is Life Water. Although they aren't technically green-washing, they are still trying to make it seem like buying their will make the world more equitable. All the while being a plastic bottle that ships in 2 layers on plastic. I work at a movie theater and one layer would be a 6 pack, then another layer combining two 6 packs. And this is a level of waste the consumer will never even see
Why does no one ever talk about patagonia? They are just as guilty. They may not produce as much but in my eyes are one of the worst considering they push such a large amount of bs.

Bear in mind that the profit motive takes away basic human needs by putting a price on them. If you don't have the money to pay for water, clothing, or food, you can't have access to it. Companies are forcing YOU to live the way they want you to live. Instead of having your guaranteed right to access your basic needs, you're forced to accept whether or not you deserve to have your needs satisfied.
The "companies provide everything I need argument" is bunk.
I have a friend who graduated in environmental politics and went on to work at Danone at their environmental change division. She becale depressed really fast. Basically her work was "find a way for us to do less than the bare minimum to appear climate-consciencious". And she was overworked doing that.
She wanted to make a difference, and that's really sad.

Not greenwashing, but another issue that recently reared its head near me:
Recently a car manufacturer wanted to cut down a about 200 years old forrest to build a factory there. Nearly all forests in my country were removed previous to the 18th century. That means that this forrest was one of the older ones in the country. Not only that, but over its two centuries of existence it developed a great ecosystem with many endangered species of bats.
As a response many environmentalists started to protest the cutting down of the forrest. This was practically ignored by the media. That is, until some workers started counter protesting the environmentalists because they were afraid they would lose their jobs. And this did get a lot of media attention.
For people who do not realise what this is: the capitalist class/the company in question are using the liberal media to put the workers and the environmentalists against each other, divide and conquer. The truth is that both these groups, or rather both the forrest and the workers, are the victims of the capitalists that are exploiting them. The factory doesn't *need* to be built there.
As for the government, it handed out the permit to cut down the forest pretty much right away. This is in violation of laws that say it should protect endangered species, and proves once again that the government too serves the capitalist class.

Some good news: yesterday a wood owl was found in one of the trees, and upon that the local government decided that that tree, as all others in a 75 meter radius around it could not be cut down. Still, that doesn't change that a huge ecosystem has veen destroyed. Videos circulated of deer and other animals fleeing the forrest a few days ago.
Facebook also wanted to build a huge datacentre here, which would be a massive pollutant and would be a huge burden on our water reserve and electricity network. The local government of where it was to be built was all in favour, even leftist parties. Luckily it was blocked by the senate just in time, at least for now. It may still be allowed to be built later.

Still China's per capita emissions, consumptions, waste, etc (every conceivable negative metric) is many times lower than that of the US and other developed countries.

I’ve been refusing to drink Nestle’s arrowhead water ever since finding out that they’re drawing from a spot in California based on an expired permit (since 1988). Hopefully CA manages to shut their operation down soon.
Obviously the whole company sucks but this one action hits closer to home for me.
I know Adidas and Levi's have also been hyping their efforts to become green. I think some of their efforts to reduce waste and make fashion more sustainable are real, but until the entire business model changes, it's still mainly about marketing how green they are to customers who care.

Companies will generally never care about the environment, or at least, actually do something meaningful that'll help the environment because their goal is to make money. Unless we coerce them with laws to do so, and properly enforce them, most companies won't do anything that's actually meaningful(such as cut their emissions by a huge amount, and being honest about it)
We might need a leader that will force these evil companies to stop polluting our livelihoods OR ELSE
I agree, under capitalism no company can actually operate ethically with human and planetary health in mind since the capitalist system requires profits, requires growth instead of de-growth and requires poverty in order to maintain it's pathetic existence. rat
The path forward, maybe has to do with enforcing or demanding certain laws, but I find that is too much patch work and not enough getting to the source of the problem. The problem is capitalism. We need a mass movement of the people to protest capitalism and demand a peaceful transition towards a resource-based economy (no money required).
Here's the catch: It would probably require the demand for a Universal Basic Income because the major oppressor in life right now is labor-for-income and if we can remove the oppression of labor so that people can have their basic needs met without wage slavery then, well then, we can truly have time and energy to transition. Peter Joseph of TZM has a great book and also lectures on the 5 great transitions: Access, Automation, Localization, Open Source and Digital Network Feedback. Those transitions are started already but to make any meaningful dent we would need a pretty mass global protest that has the right focus to sustain itself.
I work in a company that tries to create a sustainable image. They sell different flours, grains and similar baking/cooking products that are mostly packaged in plastic with the assumption that they were at least milled/made by the company.
In reality they mill maybe 20% of what they sell and the rest is just stuff from other companies that package their product in plastic/cardboard/paper bags. We put it into tote bages then it's packaged and resold at 2-4x the original price. A lot of the stuff comes from big names like Blue Diamond almond flour or Red Star yeast.
Yeah, all that trash, plastic and resources it takes to move all of that just for profit is not sustainable.

I know that my personal carbon footprint is peanuts compared to a company, but this is exactly why I start all new purchase by looking at it.
By looking at my footprint first and understanding where it is worse, that lets me look at a general category like “transportation” in order to try to find greener options. This further lead me to decide to use a bike to get to the train and take that to work in order to reduce my emissions.
Compare this to watching a car ad which says “buy our Tesla in order to save the planet!” Sure, my emissions would technically be better than driving a gasoline car, but I also miss out on that HUGE improvement by using public transportation!
I also think it’s important to consider electricity is not made equal everywhere. Many places use coal burning to create electricity which is used to charge electric cars. Also, batteries for those cars are very bad for the environment when they break down and the materials harvested for the battery are not sustainable. Electric cars have potential but they are not there yet imo

I agree with the information but not with the speculation, blaming "capitalism" is ignorant, without it we wouldn't have reached the industrial revolution and thus would be living in poverty, all of us.
The system has its flaws but it's the best we got so far therefore it's a matter of improving it not replacing it with failed ideas that have been proven wrong many times before.

@@kaptivatingstudios676 I admit that megacorporations whose only purpose is to keep growing regardless of the consequences is a big problem and it's probably the main cause behind the climate crisis and our inability to act upon it but "learning to survive with the basics" seems a waste of potential, it's not true that we're running out of resources, we're just pretty bad at managing them (again, because the larger forces don't care about long-term efficiency but profit).
Capitalism works well because it doesn't rely on people "making the right choice" and that's why unions and politicians are not a solution either, they're human organizations and can be as corrupt as anything else.
What we need is a system that runs by itself regardless of what people chose to do but also one that balances the greed with the sustainability, without greed there's no growth but too much greed and we have our current problems.

The whole "a company's sole purpose is to generate profit" is actullay a point FOR regulation imo. If it's just about profit generation the fastest way might be to rob a bank (or maybe was at some point). But in general probably even neoliberal thinkers want companies to be useful to society in some way, right? Not just "generate profit" but also "provide a value". And by having environmental and other restrictions that value is increased (eg providing better health, or rather, not making people sick). If a car has no steering wheel and no brakes, then there better be some guide rails.
Great video. You know how there have to be these huge "causes cancer" signs on tobacco products? (in some countries at least) It'd be nice if ads also had to include the environmental/social impact of a company "We planted 1000 trees! We also leaked 20k barrels of oil, release 10M tonnes of CO2 per year and bulldozed a town for out new refinery. Buy our stuff."

Literally any time a typical corporation does anything even remotely altruistic, it is always a carefully calculated move designed to increase profits, with any positive effects being secondary. It will always be way too small of an effect to counteract the harm that the company is doing.

The main content of the video is great and well-researched, but I think you really could do better on the thesis that arrives at 'dismantle capitalism'. This video jumped with a slight of hand from the extreme of neoliberal deregulation to capitalism bad always and vague gesturing of needs replacement now. This fails to make a convincing case for anyone but those already on board and critically examine why a current capitalist economy with much more regulation (incl. for information itself and lies corporations do) is not either enough or a steppping stone

I've watch most of your videos and I simply wanted to make this comment regarding units of measurment. My point is: I don't mind the unit you take as long as you keep the unit consistent for the same task. For exemple, in the video you mentionned 252M gallon for an oil spill and previously you mentionned 6 million barrel for another oil spill.
I know this may sound peaky but it's actualy the opposite. As an engineer who has work on the oil and gas side and on the green side I can assure you, units are the crux of the problem. Having consistent units help understand the true scale of the problem. Many of my friends understand and see the problem, too few understand the scale.
The scale of the problem is what justifies your proposed solutions.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I feel like Milton Friedmans position has been misrepresented here. He basically argues against social responsibility for big companies (and also government as it is a self-serving entity just like companies as well). If their only goal is to make a profit, at least you know what to expect from them.
So to conclude, that he wants profit to be top priority is only true for companies, not societies as a whole. Companies are not supposed to handle social problems.
He is a libertarian. He dislikes big companies but ackoledges their utility and praises the service they provide. He doesnt like big government because he believes most government actions are services that the market would handle more efficiently without the false philantropic virtue shield.
I feel the need to call a bluff on the oversimplification of Thomas Friedman viewpoints and labeling him as the source of corporate disowning of environmental stewardship… this was happening way before Friedman and continues regardless of him. Hold up… now I’m getting to the part where the author states “capitalism is the problem”…this too is a vast oversimplification of the human problem that reaches beyond and before “capitalism” was a thing… following this pejorative description the author provides very little in solution but platitudes.. I totally appreciate the idea of this video and I like that the author highlighted “green washing” as a thing. That was good, but then the author lost my support through making rash statements for the destruction of a system before there is a proper solution or alternative… rather… economics is the use of limited resources that have alternative uses… and with that in mind… everything is a trade off… nothing is the utopian vision that is used to “destroy” the present “system”. Please review history of the 20th century to find many examples of people destroying the present system only to make things much worse.
Yeah this is the problem I have with pure replacement strategies, you need a replacement system preestablished to make things work. Of course one part of the problem for why this happens so easily is that the human brain has evolved to simplify and categorize reality which makes the oversimplification of complex situations almost inevitable as all models of reality are to varying degrees oversimplifications of a much more complex system.
There is some hint the author is aware this is a simplification with their mention of temporary intermediary policies but yeah there is a false dichotomy for a multidimensional framework of reality which can't be properly projected onto a line. Neoliberalism is an absurdly impossible system however from the stand point of thermodynamics as free market capitalism represents so virtually any change is an overall improvement.
I agreed with everything until the "End Capitalism" statement. This is a simplistic, naive statement. Capitalism is a very loose term and it doesn't define very much about a country's economy or the way it looks after it's people. China, Norway and the USA all have capitalism, but they are all vastly different. What we need are much better laws and better, enshrined rules that our governments and politicians must abide by. We need rigorous laws that prevent ANY corporate political donations. We need the most stringent conflict of interest regulations. We need strong independent anti-corruption watchdogs that can meter our harsh penalties. We need the powers of our leaders to be reeled back. We need tougher anti-authoritarian checks and balances. We need whistleblower protections, perhaps even reward them. We need corporations to be held socially and environmentally responsible for their actions. The list goes on. Ending corporate donations and influence is the big one by which all the rest would follow.
Yeah, Mr.Obvious, but people do understand what this Statement MEANS.
So it's ok to use it.

This is classic liberalism. I don't know how else to tell you this, but there is no "ethical capitalism". If you want to solve climate change it will not happen while capitalism still exists, in any form. This was literally in the video btw.

The recent example is Samsung and popular boy group. It's been happening for years. I just don't know if companies are really sincere with being a part of the solution of climate change or just riding the wave of promoting of going green on the outside.

It can be so overwhelming to learn about these greenwashing practices especially when it comes from such massive companies. My advice is to when possible chose not to buy their product and try to find a more local, less bullshitty brands

I have no problem with businesses pursuing profit to me that seems logical, what I have a problem with is the consumers that buy things they don't need or trust advertisement or forget the bad things companies do. The biggest frustration is with the government however, just like how a business should try to make a profit a government should hold the reigns and direct firmly what is allowed and what is not. Laws enforced with fines are laws for the poor not for the rich. I want a government seizing dangerous equipment and putting bans on corporations that have proven to be untrustworthy in causing public harm. The government's job is to protect and serve it's people, this includes educating them when they are being lied to, protect them when they are being harmed or avenge them when they get killed. To a business a workers death is a minor inconvenience they just get replaced by another but if this is followed by weeks of operation shutdown from investigation and forced implementation of worker safety standards then they will implement those safety standards themselves.
Unfortunately especially in the USA bribes are legal under the lobby label, it is a bribe but they call it lobby. The system tells us these politicians take this much money from these corporations, they tell us they are taking bribes and yet we allow for it to continue. How can you expect the driver to steer us in the right direction when the horse is bribing the rider down hill and off of a cliff because in the short term it is the easier route?
A government should be looking ahead to the future for generations, investing in infrastructure, ports, cities, dams so that one day those investments will benefit the people of that country, but now that the majority of government follows the will of the business the country will follow the business and the people are left to fend for themselves, now we can only tell each other we are being lied to, now we can only educate each other about the malpractices that go on behind closed doors. Now we have to take on the monumental task of righting the wrongs because there is no other way, we have to fix this ourselves by telling each other to protect and serve each other like a independent organism from the bigger whole, buying food grown nearby, taking care of each other where possible, and become less and less reliant on the bigger community, that is how you move to the right direction, one community at a time.

People do care and want to make a difference. That is the reason greenwashing campaigns are so successful and effective. These corporations are taking people's genuine concerns and awareness of environmental issues and exploiting them to do the exact opposite of what the people want, all in the name of profit. Just another sickening aspect of capitalism.

In the 'what we can change' part of the video, all says in general is that we should make 'actual' ethical company's and to essentially "do better". This is not only problematic, but also (as of yet) impossible because saying such a thing would allow bigger companies such as the aforementioned Nestle & Chevron to once again add more to their Greenwashing program; and to add more onto that it is quite impossible (as of yet) to have a business/company to even be 'actually' ethical as there are no possible mean in even being purely ethical and green and making financial profit out of it.
The day we ever do somehow find a method to make actual financial profit out of (examples:) planting trees, recycling, and/or not dumping that weird black liquid from the corner of your drain which makes an ominous noise into our indigenous friends hole which they call a home; and that those companies/businesses aren't B companies, then there might actually be a chance to revitalise our planets global ecosystem.
But hey, I'm just a random guy that just like any other person needs money. (Just a shame that there is no way that money can ever be green)

I wonder if there is some sort of middle ground to be found between helping the environment and appealing to the insatiable corporate greed. In other words I wonder if there is a way for these corporations to act in a climate positive manner as well as being beneficial to them some how as I feel that may be one of the few ways they would actually act is if it still benefits them in some way while in turn healing the Earth. Any thoughts?
Logically? Yes. Practically? No. I say that because I think public companies are just too beholden to their shareholders. They HAVE to turn a profit every single quarter and that profit HAS to increase every time.
So I’m my opinion, our best option is to make the environmental actions the profitable ones. If we do that via regulation then we’ll also push a lot of companies to either go under or do more environmentally friendly actions.
But we still need to eventually get away from this “grow forever” mindset.
@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet This is sort of the original theory behind capitalism, that there is this "invisible hand" which will always make the corporation's actions serve the better good through the profit motive, that being greedy is indirectly good for the world. It assumes that the market economy works as a democracy, we vote with our wallets, and the unethical businesses naturally go bankrupt.
The theory behind capitalism is good, but it's painfully clear that this has not worked in practice. It's a failed experiment that refuses to stop. I think a lot of the problems come from the fact that money is not a good unit to measure social value. Companies can spread massive propaganda campaigns like the ones talked about in this video, to make it seem as if they do spread good social values, which gives them more profit, even if it's a lie. If anything, capitalism shows how being the most ruthless sociopath will make you financially succeed, even if it's socially destructive.

Despite what Apple has done in terms of packaging and internal recycling, they continue to sell an huge variety of plastic (oil-based) products, and even more third party products that are ridiculously superfluous... like AirPod, and plastic-based, iPhone cases, etc. Selling these products is incredibly counter-productive to whatever eco-advances they are making, IMO.
The worse greenwashing is the carbon tax and credit. By buying credits, a company can do the same as it was before and still claim it is carbon neutral. They then add the cost of the credits to the price of their goods or services. People THINK this is helping the carbon emissions, but it isn't. The companies selling the credits would be doing the same thing without the credits, but with a smaller profit margin.

I do think when we can find ways to implement consumption degrowth in our own lives we can build up a strong enough ideal to hold companies accountable to the same standard. It's not individual action that the responsibility lies upon for the climate crisis (like the video says), but individual action does contribute to cultural mentality.

I got an advertisement about personal recycling, and how the Pacific Garbage Patch wasn't really the fault of U.S. consumers...🙄 Yeah, but it's generally our corporations putting out the plastic.
If we went to glass and to biodegradable plastics wherever possible, worldwide, we'd have a lot less problems.

Where I live, most people would say that climate change is bad and we should prevent it (which obviously isn't enough), but no one seems to connect their words to their actions beyond using reusable bags. It's pretty depressing
one of the ones that annoy me is Life Water. Although they aren't technically green-washing, they are still trying to make it seem like buying their will make the world more equitable. All the while being a plastic bottle that ships in 2 layers on plastic.
I work at a movie theater and one layer would be a 6 pack, then another layer combining two 6 packs. And this is a level of waste the consumer will never even see
