Lecture 14a: introduction to neuropsychology

- Welcome to another video lecture for my class on psychological testing and assessment! This one is the first in my series on neuropsychological assessment, and it provides a (very) basic review of some concepts in neuroscience. Throughout the video, I try to highlight connections between specific structures and functions in the central nervous system (mostly the brain). I also try to highlight disorders or conditions that neuropsychologists might test for.
I’m still in high school but am fascinated by psychology and neuropsychology and hopefully will pursue it as a career. This video really helped me understand it better thank you!
You're welcome. I'm happy that my old (2016, I think...?) lectures are helpful. And kudos for following along with a graduate school -level lecture on neuropsychology. I find this stuff very interesting, too. Just this morning, I was thinking about some aspects of the neuropsychological functioning of one of my patients; and just last week I consulted with a neuropsychologist about a different patient. It's always cool to learn more!

Nice video! A quick distinction between nerve and neuron. A neuron is an individual nerve cell, loosely, a nerve is bundle of Neuronal projections.

3:13 comes from the greek world γλοία and it means literally glue. We say in modern greek "Είναι γλοιώδης!" for a person meaning he has such a "sticky" and awful behaviour! But in this case γλοία is used in a good way, referring to a supportive network of cells!😊Very good lecture by the way!!!

Good luck. I sometimes wish that I had done specialized graduate or postdoctoral training in neuropsychology. Its a fascinating sub-field of clinical psychology. These days, most of my work is psychotherapy, and I miss not having the time or opportunities for testing.

1. Someone with a master's in clinical psychology and a PhD in Neuropsychology is capable of teaching in both fields?

Thanks for the compliment! I have recently changed careers, from being a full-time professor to a full-time psychotherapist, so I don't know when I will be able to record new videos. I'm happy that people are still enjoying the videos that I have already recorded.
I am thinking of changing my career and becoming Neuropsychologist, but not sure how much of hard work, consistency and resilience will be required...
In the United States, you typically have to earn a PHD in clinical psychology, and then follow-up with a specialized clinical post doc in neuropsychological testing, in order to be licensed and credentialed as a neuropsychologist. That’s a lot of fairly challenging course work and clinical work.

Sir ,is fear memory a different memory or it's a declarative memory having some fearful incident?
Actually I want to know what are the differences between fear long term memory and declarative memory.
I want to study neuroscience or neuropsychology but I'm not sure about choosing medical school or studying psychology and then getting phd in neuropsychology. I feel like I'll never be enough like a doctor if I study neuropsychology. But studying medicine will limit me to other things I want to do. And I want to immigrate to Canada from Turkey but medical procedures vary widely by countries. So I'm not sure at all. Neuropsychology is comparatively new field in the world so I'm curios about job opportunities in the future. I wanna ask you some questions about these if you let me.
1) Can I get phd in neuroscience if I have bachelor's degree of psychology? And what job opportunities will I have if I do it? (Mostly Canada and USA)
2) How do you see the future of neuropsychology?
3) If I don't want to do clinical neuropsychology can I work in lab? and what positions will I work in?
4) How's salary of neuropsychologist in CA and USA?

I'm not a neuropsychologist (I'm a "regular" clinical psychologist), and I'm not a career counselor, so these are some non-expert opinions.... 1.) In America, your undergraduate degree has little bearing on what type of graduate training you pursue. People with non-clinical degrees in neuroscience usually get jobs teaching and research in academia, or doing research in industrial settings. They usually cannot cannot do clinical practice, since they don't have the training; 2.) In America, the average age of the population is increasing, as more older people live for longer. This means that in coming years, an increasing percentage of the population will likely be suffering from age-related neurocognitive problems. This fact alone will mean that there will likely be increasing need for clinicians who can do neuropsychological testing or provide related treatments. 3.) In America, if you don't want to study clinical neuropsychology, you can go to graduate school for a masters or doctoral degree in pretty-much any area of psychology or neuroscience that you like. The research that you do will depend mostly on the faculty members who you work with. If you want to study study clinical neurospychology, you will have to go to graduate school for a PhD or PsyD, and this will require doing some amount of research. You will then have to complete a clinical internship and post-doctoral training, which may involve additional research or may focus more on clinical practice. 4.) I don't know -- GOOGLE it.
One additional point.... In America, "neurospychologist" is a licensed professional title (like "clinical psychologist"). In order to claim this title, you have to have specific educational credentials (see above) and you have to apply, take tests, pay fees, etc. in whatever state you live. In America (and elsewhere, I think), "neuroscientist" is not a licensed professional title. Anyone can claim to be a neuroscientist or that their research is neuroscientific in nature. Also, neuroscientists cannot do any clinical practice (unless they are also clinical psychologists, neuorpsychologists, or other licensed professions).
At the beginning you said later you would talk about RBANS regarding VaD, but you did not. Can you please point to your video that does? Thanks.

There certainly is an overlap between some areas of psychological testing, particularly intellectual ability testing, and eugenics movements in America (and elsewhere), but I’m not sure I see the overlap between neuropsychological testing (at least as I have presented it) and eugenics. Is there a specific concern that you have?
