Okay here are the answers to all problems: (cause i had them all)
1. If "Create AAC version" is greyed out that's because you are trying to convert it from your device "Music" page. You must convert it from Library "Songs" page.
2. If drag and drop isn't working you have to check "Manually manage music and videos" in Summary page (little phone icon). This can delete all iTunes content if you didn't update your stuff on iTunes so watch out.
3. If drag and drop still isn't working you have to authorize your PC. >> Account/Authorizations/Authorize this computer.
4. If your your mp3 is too short, download audacity. Open it and click File/Open and find your file. Then click on track and CTRL + A, click on Effects/Repeat and follow their steps later.
I think you should pin this comment cause everyone is having the same problems and this is very easily explained..
CTRL + C(copy) the .m4r file then CTRL+V(paste it) in the Tones section of the Device menu...That worked for me when I couldn't drag and drop.!!

I'm not sure why Apple has to make simple processes so complicated, and I don't want to spend money on a song I already downloaded years ago just to make it my ringtone. Thank you so much. I am virtually computer illiterate but followed your tutorial step by step and was able to successfully add ringtones to my iPhone.
i did it exactly how its shown but when i drag the song into ,,tones'' it says ,, preparing to update '' some other stuff and finally ,,finishing sync'' up in the middle but the tune doesn't appear anywhere.
The last part about the ticking the "Manually manage music and videos" made the difference. I've been trying to figure this out for over an hour. THANK YOU!

Thank you so much - I have been trying to get 'tones' at the end of the whole procedure and finally managed it by connecting my phone to the computer (as you advised) and copying and pasting the mp3 file into 'tones' which finally showed up.
Doesn’t give me an option for aac files
I have tried FOREVER to get my ringtone customized. This video helped a lot!
I have the same problem. I simply cannot drag the file. I'm pretty sure I did all the steps.
EDIT: Guys, I've solved the problem. Just go to your device and enter the Summary page; there, mark Manually manage videos. It worked for me.

If you are having problems dragging and dropping the m4r file into tones; go to "account" in itunes, then to "authorization", followed by, "authorize this computer". Worked like a charm for me.
After 3 hours of trying finally its working!! You wanna know why it is not working before?? Even after trying for numerous time?? It becuz your song must be exactly 30 seconds!! It doesnt working if lesser than that!! Damn im so proud of myself somehow~ I dont have to pay for a song that i already have in my playlist thank god.. Thanks bro!! Really appreciate it!! Btw its 4 in the morning here.. If only i was study hard for my exam as much as i eager to put my fav song as ringtone on my iphone.. only god knows what i could achieve X'P

I had the same problem where i cant drop it to the tones, but i figured it out , go to your summary listed in settings , scroll down into the options and mark : Convert higher bit rate songs to : choose 192 kbps AAC if your song file is 192 kbps . you can check from "song info" in itunes then press "file" . press sync when you are done , now go to tones and press sync again , finally you can drop your song!
Where is "Settings" in ITunes? I don't see it. On another note, why is "Sync" all grey and not available to click on?

When I'm going to drag the file. does it come up Not copied to the iphone device because the file type can not play on this iphone

if it isn't working, try making the ringtone shorter than 30 seconds, i myself tried this and it worked.

However, patience is the most important for anyone and after listening to your steps carefully, we will accomplish. As long as the iTunes is working, the phone software is up-to-date, it's a go. Does it work on less than 30 second tones/songs? It did work for me for songs with the exact time but for less it doesnt

Hey I try to add the tone and it just says link but it isn’t actually adding it.. I did this with my phone a few weeks ago and it worked but I’m doing it with someone’s phone who isn’t synced to my iTunes will that matter? Also I just kind of said screw it and synced but it still isn’t letting me add the tone

Oh wow I think I solved the dragging problem from the desktop to the tone section in device , all i did was drag that tone (from songs in the library) to "user's iphone" and it automatically went to tones in the device!
Is there any way of adjusting the volume on the ringtone prior to putting it on the iPhone?? I tried the Volume Adjust under Options (below the time) but it seems like that did nothing.... it sounds like my custom ringtones are louder than the stock ones.... I have to put my ringer volume at about 1/2 to have it where it's not blasting.

EDIT: ATLAST, AFTER 18 hours of cracking head, manage to do it. Instead of draging, i only can copy & paste!! SUPERBLY working fine!!

Ahh yes it works, thank you so much. I was originally having a problem with the changing a to r but the file options trick fixed that.

My attempts fail at the first hurdle. iTunes will not allow me to drag the mp3 into the music library. Its just won't stay there and bounces straight out. It is a standard MP3. Any advice, thanks.

I already have the ringtone saved on iTunes. I slide the song onto my desktop. I have changed the A to R. Then I drag the ringtone to Tones and it does not stay. When I drag it to Tones it shows in blue “+copy”. And it goes right back to the desktop. I do not understand what I am doing wrong. I have done it before no problem but this time it won't work. Please help.
