- After a fun boat trip at sea, Kimi Werner brings home the uku (grey snapper/jobfish) she speared while freediving to cook over an open fire for her mother. But first she must forage for the ingredients to make a macadamia nut pesto with lots of island flavors. This episode shows a lot of harvesting from the land and a little glimpse of the ups and downs of caring for an elderly parent in her final stage of life. Food, forage, family- it’s what keeps us going.

I tried not to cry when you were holding Buddy and explaining to your mama how you caught the fish for her and how you prepared it. I wasn’t ready. So I ended up tearing up. He’s going to grow up to be so healthy, not allergic to everything and anything, loving and respecting the the land and sea.. but also just a man filled with love and flowing out to others. Your mum is such a darling, I think she got up because she knew the effort you put into that fish for her. In New Zealand we call sweet potatoes, Kumara, white ones that are blue inside we call Hawaiian blues.
