@therealtaco7328 Starfish normally eat sea urchins, but because of global warming there are less starfish, so urchin populations are getting out of control. Urchins are especially dangerous though because they eat kelp, and are currently destroying kelp forests (which are very important).
@@llamaboss2514it’s not “because of global warming” there has been a disease that liquifies them and kills them which is a naturally occurring phenomenon with the potential reasons still based on what we think rather than what we know, and yet we have too many people that jump the gun and tout it as fact. I love the sound of getting them off the rocks but especially the stuffing into the bag 😂 I wonder how much that full bag weighs when brought up on the boat?
Okay we can actually approximate how much this full bag of Kina would weigh. According to Fisheries New Zealand the average commercial Kina weighs about 248.3 grams. Which is about 0.547 pounds (0.25 kilograms) per Kina if we then take this and multiply by all the Kina in this bag which is 99 we get 54.153 pounds (24.56 kilograms) so decently heavy!
@@MysticsPlazma thank you for figuring that out for us! I wonder if the reported weight includes water they retain? I don’t know how those critters work lol
How long do these take to grow? I watch so many of your videos and it looks like there are tens of thousands of these things in your area. How long do you think it will take to clear them all out?
It depends on the amount of sea weed around. This area is known as a kina barren as they eat all of the sea weed and become "skinny" You can't really get rid of them. It costs more than they're worth to do it. So there some companies trying to catch them and grow them with aquaculture sea weed to sell them to SE asia
Too many urchins on the reef can be hazardous because they overgraze algae, causing algal populations to drop. This has the potential to disturb ecosystem equilibrium, impacting other marine creatures that rely on algae for food or habitat. Additionally, excessive grazing by urchins can harm coral reefs by consuming live coral tissue when other food sources become scarce. In other words, they can act as parasites on other sea organisms.
What's the difference between the sea urchins you catch and the bigger black ones you leave. Those big black ones are the only ones I've ever seen, are they inedible?
