First time I’ve heard this song. Rob does a beautiful job. What a beautiful yet sad song. Life is precious and youth so fleeting. Looking back is so bitter sweet, things I could have done differently, things I failed to do, wonderful moments I still treasure. Rob brings that all back to me with his wonderful voice.
I love Robs music. maggie is one of his most favorite. But it is hard to pick among your children, I love them all only in different ways, like the Beatles!! Rob was amazing in his musical brand. He was very special !!!!
Kudos to Mr. Robson. The most memorable rendition of that song for me was watching my uncle at 430 in the morning, stewed to the gills hanging on to the front door at full volume. I was about 14 at the time. Laughed so hard I nearly cried. I will never forget that scene as long as I live!
my grampa "Pop" used to sing it to us too..... His Mom was Maggir Mc Namara...married Anson Thompson.....a railroader and she washed clothes by the track and bought thr property ( 3 village lots) where i and all 8 of my sisters and bros were born.........
This song was sung by my father passed in 24 Apr. 2014, and sung by me and my wife too in the same feeling shown by him. I believe in being sung by my son and my daughter in law as same as me. Thank you for sharing your beautiful but heartbreaking song..
I hear many singers sing this song, but you are among the best for voice clarity and the fiddle just adds to the song. Well done a good song, you are my favorite. Thanks for posting this. Love it Thanks a lot.
Robin A. "Rob" Mashburn passed away on March 03, 2000. He was a young man at the age of 57. Everyone referred to him as: Rob The Picker. He is still missed after fifteen (21) years. The obit was posted in The Citizen-Times Newspaper in Asheville, N.C.
Son; you’re grandpa did more for that song than any other musician I have heard,, My great grandmother (Luray V) would cry whenever she heard it, Grandpa Rob gave it character and authenticity. Ed C.
Edwin, Thanks for posting your comments about your great grandmother and grandpa Rob. Rob had such wonderful talent and a remarkable voice. He could hold an audience as well as any popular performer in the business.
Edwin, I'm letting you know that your grandpa Rob's songs are touching people all around the world. I'm getting comments everyday from people listing to his smooth voice. I know youwould be very pleased to hear the news.
+Travis Shan Thank you for your comments. Rob had a voice and soul that could grab one's heart in his music. He made it look so relaxed and easy. I'm glad to know that he was your uncle.
Love and respect your Grandpa's Singing. You're so blessed to have the Grandpa with such a beautiful voice, When will we hear you sing with Grandpa? 👀💚💛🧡
This is the way this song should be sung, with feelings. Sad story the original poem, she died so young and he would go down by himself and think of her. Glad it was set to a melody and will never be forgotten, if it wasn't who would know the poem? He sings it well and perfect instrumental, was looking for a good version and found this man who I never heard of in Canada. Leave it to some one in North Carolina That state is beautiful and infested with great special people and great musicians.. I could move there :-) Andy Griffith show Yeah take me to Mayberry I love their accent also
Thank you Maurice for posting these songs of Rob. I miss him so much. He recorded one of my songs, Misty Mountain Morning and we toured with him for a bit. Such a good soul...and so missed. Thanks again!
Thank you, Maggie Rose, what a beautiful name. It's amazing and a blessing how memories let us relive the past with the one's we loved in the days gone by. Some call it the "Good Old Days"
Love this version Peace be with you . I live here in Hamilton Ont Canada and my wife's name is Maggie and I'm George .The Lyrics were written here in Hamilton about 5 miles from where I live by George Washington Johnson for his wife Maggie Clark .Yes they are burried in the Cemetaries in this area .The part about the white breakers is out on Lake Ontario (Hamilton Harbour) We have what we call The Mountain here and at the edge of it he could look out on The Bay and Lake
George, It's good to hear from you. Thank you for providing more history on this song. George is a name that continues from the past and into the future as it's a powerful name that will continue. Take care of Maggie as she has a wonderful name too!
Thanks for sharing both the song and the history of it Maurice! As one who taught English for over 34 years, it was always a part of my teaching to look back at the past and share lyrics of some of the great songs of the past - lyrics with such powerful memories and feelings. This was one of them. Also this is the first time I ever heard Rob sing. Tremendous! I don't know if there are any around, but if there are some CDs of his songs, I would definitely purchase one or more to add to my collection. Again, thanks for sharing this beautiful song!
Finally figured this song out for so many years. It was in Tales Of The Darkside in the episode Case Of The Stubborns. An actor who plays Grandpa Titus (Eddie Branken) sits in his rocking chair and sings this song somewhat. He also was the shop keeper in home alone 2. Grandpa Titus gets interrupted as his son walks out. The grandson is played by Christian Slater when he was 15 years old. You can find it on youtube. It is a very good episode!
Great song from the 81th century I reme mber singing this song in assembly in gr ade school before school started in the g ym I thought it was corny then but I have grown to love it through the years also th ere was a song called Reuben and Rache l we uses to sing
Grew up hearing Mama sing and hum this while doing dishes and housework and I'd tease her 'bout singing aunt Maggie's song again and she said well...you grow up and write one about Lilly and someday some Mama can hum a song about me to their children. Sorry Ma ! but I do replace aunt Maggie's name with Lilly and sometimes my wife Sarah's name when I sing it. Rob does a great version and has a great voice for this type of song.
I've only ever heard this song performed to a swing-music beat, from two 1930s movies. It was typical at that time to redo old songs - which were no longer copyrighted, which was an important point - in swing.
Hey John! Some dear folks, perhaps including those 3 who don't like the song, never had the enriching youth scenes like we did in our post WW2 era. How could people of this age ever imagine the nostalgia that we oldies have of our innocent growing-up years!!!
Now I understand better why my grandfather would get pissed off when I played this with a modern beat . . . but he was a cranky old bastard in any case.
Thank you very much, Maurice. Out of dozens of versions of this song, I like Mashburn's best. I tried but failed to buy it online. Would you please let me (and others) know where to get it.
Thank you Guangzhao Li for your kind comments. I'm sorry to inform you that due to the death of Rob Mashburn more than a decade ago, the recordings that he made are no longer in print and are not available. I've tried to locate family members to no avail. If I'm ever successful, I will post information here. I intend to leave this tune on UA-cam and hopefully you can enjoy here. Thanks for listening.
+Mark tatham Rob and L.B. were really a pair. Rob had such a beautiful voice and L.B. knew the exact time to come in with his high tenor. I understand L.B. continues singing. I've noticed him on videos from the Townsend gathering.
Never get tired of listening❤❤ to this song!!

Kerry is a bit modest. He's a gifted songwriter and plays a mean guitar.

I thank Rob Mashburn was a lot better than most of those singers on the Grand Old Opera. Great singer and picker.
Rob does a good job but the first time that I heard it was by Foster and Allen original....I loved it....
There are many versions of this song but none compare to Robs.
Foster and Allen has a big hit with that song in Ireland but that version is superb. That dude is a fantastic singer and guitar picker
What a voice, why didn't hear of this Guy, was he blacklisted?
Now I understand better why my grandfather would get pissed off when I played this with a modern beat . . . but he was a cranky old bastard in any case.
