I recognize this guy and I’m guessing he learned it from the great Larry Haun. What a privilege it must’ve been to work with that man.
They make a turnbuckle for this. It allows precise safe alignment of walls. You can attach it to the bottom of any length 2x4. Or 6. And fine tune very easily.

i remember my dad showed me this trick a couple of years ago on a gable end that we forgot to level. i put all my force on the 2x4 and nailed to another truss with a 2 inch common. i straddled the brace between my legs and when i was ducking under the truss i held the brace and it kicked out and sacked me so bad i nearly fell down onto the slab ahhahah. good times, never straddle a brace.

Gotta nail a block to the slab and do the same method but slide and.nail the brace along the block
I've seen where you cut a block of wood that lays flat on the floor slightly longer that where the angle brace lands on the slab. Put on on top the other and push a belly in the brace until it pushes on the block on the floor end for end. Really only works to push the wall.
Cut a 45 on the botton so when you push it the 2x4 wont move
Will this work on a 100 year old house before I put plywood back on exterior walls?
I need to move the top of the walls over about 2 inches and don't want to use hydraulic jacks.
You need to move the wall slowly, over some time. If you try to force old wood a lot it may crack and create more problems.
Great video. That's the fastest, most accurate truing method. One 2x4 can push or pull to straighten a wall. This is done before the joists are framed in. The video is just demonstration. The lumber looks like Douglas fir, easy nailing. We don't get that here in lumber.

your suppose to nail a block to the ground then nail a piece of timber to a stud on the wall that needs to be straightened then one person holds the straight edge and level against the wall as another person pushes or pulls the stud till it is plumb then he shoots the stud into the block. nice and quick

Hey big guy slow your row, this is called a suck brace. you use it when your unable to get a standard brace (what you have described) i.e exterior wall second floor or when you are unable to pull the standard with enough force to straighten the wall.

you should have done it when you were plumbing line and show how the wall moves with the string line being straight you never do it after. It's the best, not turnbuckels.

@ 3:06 I don't understand. Would you not need to be on the other side to push the wall inward? How would changing the curvature actually pull the wall?
When he wants to push the wall inward (pull it towards him) he nails both the bottom and top of the 2x4 so that it can't move.. When the nailed in 2x4 is straight it measures 8 feet from end A to end B. When he pushes upward on the middle of the 2x4 it bends outwards which causes the ends to move in closer to eachother. The more it bends the shorter the distance from end A to B and because the 2x4 is nailed to the wall, the wall moves with it. To push the wall out (away from him) he sat on the 8 foot 2x4 which caused the bottom end to to pull in closer to him and creating a shorter diagonal distance from end to end. He then nailed the bottom in so it couldn't move. As he pushes upward on the middle of the 2x4 it begins to straighten the 2x4 which increases the length and pushes the ends away from eachother.. The only way for the 2x4 to straighten is to push the wall out.
@@mikee12321 So then it's really the nails that are pulling the wood from the wall in? I don't see how the nails won't simply come out or if they bend, won't they immediately become ineffective? It just doesn't make sense to me how the nails in the diagonal bar are strong enough to pull the wall inward.
@@davidbassjr.7909 The nails are what is keeping the top plate and the 2x4 lever together. the 2x4 is resting diagonally 00:15 The nails are then inserted level with the floor/horizontally through the diagonal 2x4 and into the top plate.. As he pushes up on the middle of the 2x4 it creates a curve in the middle and the top portion of the 2x4 goes from being diagonal to more flat/horizontal. This puts pressure on the nails and bends them into a U shape. Think of it like a hook in a fishes mouth
@@mikee12321 So then the nails curving is intentional and it's by means of the hook shape that it can pull the wall? If so, this makes way more sense.
When you bend the board, you are shortening the distance between the to ends. Since one end is attached to the top of the wall and the other is attached to the ground, the wall is going to move with it.
What if you have a concrete floor?
Tag a block on to the concrete floor first, then do the steps and nail the brace to the block. (Not good at explaining)
Hmmm I finally followed Adam's advice and downloaded Hyezmar's Woodworking Bible. It's great for beginners, and has some advanced stuff too.

Why are you racking walls AFTER the joists are on? Did you sight your exteriors and straighten them prior to joist set? I build about 40 houses a year... Have never seen framing like this. What if you have a flushed double microlam with hangers on both sides? You wait to rack?? Where's your help with a plate level to check for plumb? This isn't a one-guy job.....

the way we used to do it is we would put a peice of 2x4 at the end of the kicker so the peice of 2x4 is extended to another near wall or install a 2x4 on the floor joist and then put pressure on the 2x4 untill level. nice video.

Why does he use that kind of hammer?
They typically have more mass (weight), so it's easier to drive nails. This is a valid benefit when you're swinging downwards (in direction of gravity). If you're swinging at a vertical wall or above your head, the hammer's weight is more tiring, and you're probably better off with a lighter hammer.
The| majority of comments are from idiots! This is only a demonstration on how to push or pull a wall section to level. Clearly, that was done before second deck went on. However, this process can be used also, to straighten up 50yr old garage for instance, one that never had wind bracing. There is another, more aggressive method to this, by adding a 2x6 flat on floor,nail wall end to bottom plate, nail 2x4 (shorter than in video) to wall and 2x6 & lift free end of 2x6, while sliding a block between floor & 2x6. We called this a mousetrap.

Your dumb, if you hit the top of a wall with a sledge it's just gonna bounce back. This is a good way to straighten walls by yourself. You can move and hold large 2X6 exterior walls this way.
LOL Weld up some turn buckles. Turn the turn buckle. Plumb the wall. Why are these guys still using 100 year old techniques. You can purchase wall plumbing turnbuckles even. No heavy lifting, one man can plumb the walls.
This can be helpful if you can only access one side of a building (edge of the property, cornered by fences) and want to push instead of pull.
He removed the kicker before taking out the brace although he says not to do that...check the end when you removes the brace....the kicker is gone!

Yes this guy isn't knowledgeable. A rigging axe is fantastic on snapping bands on lumber and trusses.
You are all wrong. Essential Craftsman and Larry Haun are the greatest carpenters and they don’t use this garbage. You don’t need a hatchet/axe to break bands. Go watch how Larry Haun breaks a band. Simple and easy.
