When we moved off the farm and into the town, dad got a job tearing down wrecks at a scrap yard. I got to know the owner quite well when I stopped in to bring dad his lunch and coffee. So it was I could get old AM radios for my old 50 Ford for 5 bucks a throw, of course that was 1960's 5 bucks, and my summer job paid 5 bucks a day. I spent many hours on my head under the dash putting in different radios for better sounding AM sound. I had on fancy one out of a Imperial that had electric tuning on a 6 volt radio, even a remote switch that was under the floor mat that I could hook up so a tap of the toe could change the station. Ah for the good old days, being 6;2 made climbing under the dash a bit harder then most but I managed. Don't think I could get up any more if I had to now days.

Ford actually built their own radios back then and they were pretty reliable for what they were. The FM stereo ones used to say "Aeroneutronic" on them in the 1970s.
I'm a huge AM radio fan and it's a shame so many of these AM radios got tossed into the trash when people upgraded to FM radios, Compact Disc, etc.

I have one of those sets. I built it into a wooden cabinet and made a portable battery-powered radio. The idling current with low volume is only about 250 milliamps max... very sensitive set, too.

I am impressed at how much gain they could squeeze out of each stage. Your radio has one RF stage, a converter, stage, and a single IF stage, yet the stations are wall-to-wall as you tune through the band.

klafong1 I'd love to understand that better myself. I frequently look at videos and circuits for Regenerative, TRF Tuned Radio Frequency, Superheterodyne, and the IC Integrated Circuit type designs. Maybe Shango can do a video taking about and demonstrating some of those designs and concepts. Car radios are fantastic DX'ers. God Bless and Happy New Year!

My parents had a 78 Fairmont from the time it was new until about 89 or 90. I have a lot of memories of the radio playing 60s and 70s music on the 'oldies' station. Of course if it drove under a bridge the music faded out a couple of seconds. I learned my music trivia.

Wow man. Talk about cry time. My mother had this car in wagon form in the early 90s. The memories flooding back are crazy...
I once hit the parking brake/moved the shifter while Mom was in the store. I rolled 1/2 a mile backwards while locking the doors to keep the men running after the car from getting in. That 90's tv! Diddnt wanna get kidnapped!

1978 was the last year of AM radio domination. In 1979, listenership was split evenly between the two bands (50% AM, 50% FM). FM took over in 1980.

Michael Williams FM radio was just about non existent in my area when I was a kid in the 60s. My parents bought me a Sony portable radio for my 10th birthday in 1968 and at that time there were only two FM stations. You could either listen to classical or jazz. AM is still pretty popular in my region.

Adding that mica to only half of the secondary I.F. works much better than I thought. You won't have full I.F. output but it is useable. Pretty smart idea that you came up with, I have to admit.
Man, it would be a nightmare to unwind all those tuning slug wireds to get to that bad I.F. can's internal cap.
I think you would be the happiest, just hooking a switch and audio coax cable to the audio I.C. input and call it good.
It is refreshing to see troubleshooting instead of mere carpetbombing to resolve problems.

Well it is quite late now, but I just opened a bunch of old IF cans pulled from stuff, and they all have tiny tubular capacitors. Some of them are directly visible from the bottom, others can be seen by removing the assembly out of the shield. Just guessing here, but since the thansformer is tuned with the slug, the value of the capacitor can be changed to some extent. Remember reading somewhere that some people would intentionally change the value of the caps on the larger IF's in order to be able to push the slug further in, getting more coupling between the windings, thus increasing the audio output of the receiver.

The board is easy to take apart. The coils slide out and there is enough wire to slide the coils clear to tip the board up so you can work on it. Just need to remove the back plate off.

You should be able to find another one of those at a car swap meet, or even a garage sale or C.L, maybe even an AM/FM version or one with a cassette or 8 track built into it, they used the same basic design for years only changing the knobs to suit the vehicle. I used to have one that came out of a Merc or a Crown Vic from the mid 80s. I think the caps inside those IF cans were a precision ceramic type so they themselves wouldn't fail but the connections at one end might. If you wanted to go to the trouble (which I would not) you could probably open up the can and investigate what happened, it could be as simple as a failed solder joint, but it looks like it would take an hour just to get the board out just to get at it.

Hello, If I was in that situation and wanted to find a replacement IF can, I would check at the junk yards for another whole radio, and get the can from it. Or look on eBay. It's been quite a while since I worked on one of those, but to remove the board, is to first remove the screws that hold the bottom casing so you can have clear axis to the whole board that is attached to the tuner assembly. Remove the screws, or nuts (I can't remember) and pull the board straight out. The inductors should stay attached to the board without having to unsolder the wires...

Try some heat from a heat gun to the rear solder side, using a thin pipe attached to the nozle, the padding capacitors on thoses Toko style cans become dry jointed or oxidised, a bit of heat very often re flows the connection.

Sounds to me you just have a dirty volume pot. A shot of Deoxit©D-5 and some vigorous turning of the wiper ought to fix the problem. Dirt, dust and water gets into these car radios all the time, and it doesn't take much to fix them. Just give everything a good cleaning, set it aside to dry out from the cleaner, and see if it works. I have a JVC AUTO REVERSE cassette player AM/FM radio I'm going to fix and I am going to go through all the switches and contacts with a Deoxit cleaner and a cue tip first to see if that does it. The tape mechanism works fine, so that is all I may have to do.

I found a Philco Am/FM with factory 8track player and want to install it. Uses the same wiring harness as original radio. Radio and 8track works perfect when tested. Just need more info on taking out original factory radio. Thanks,Mike

    • @PracticallyFixed
      @PracticallyFixed 2 роки тому

@@robertdrayfahl6632 2 more months later... You use a deep socket to release the nuts that are on the tuning and volume knob shafts as shango mentioned. On the back of the radio there is a threaded stud sticking straight out that is used with a mounting strap or other mechanical support to keep the radio from bobbing up and down on the tuning / volume shaft. Unthread the nut on that stud and remove the support connection. Pull the antenna, speaker and power connectors and out she comes from the back, behind the dash. It can be fished through with patience. Hope you see this and it helps if you still are wondering. Cheers

I am trying to troubleshoot a Philco Ford AM only radio out of a 1967 Ford Mustang On the side of the radio its marked 7TPZ . It powers up and has audio but its squeal with static like
its going into oscillation. With a 5 foot piece of wire I could get a local radio station weak not clear. If I connect it to my outside wire antenna the station drops out as though the radio was overloaded. I have been searching for the schematic but so far no luck. I checked the only 3 transistors with a meter in the diode mode and they look good. There is a germanium diode that measures good too. I certainly would appreciate anyone offering a schematic. I might be able to fix this. There is one large round capacitor. It looks like a multi-capacitor. I noticed
its corroded on the top. Could use help with a schematic. Thanks

    Good Day,
I have at least one mint cond Ford Radio just like that one left.
I used to work in a Salvage Yard years ago, & we had a raft of ancient Autos there. I removed a few Radios from Autos that were owned by People that rarely or never used them.
The best one of what I have left is a "Wonder Bar" 1977 Cadillac Fleetwood Radio out of a Funeral Car.
    They never used it.
Also a 1972 Philco Ford Stereo Radio out of a Mercury top of the line,. . I forgot the model Name. ."Monterey"? Marquis?? owned by a wealthy Man who never used the Radio.
Anyways I owned a 1979 Ford Super Cab 1/2 Ton at the Time, 1997,. & installed & used it. until the Truck became too costly to repair in 1999.
I pulled it out before scrapping the Truck, & it's available.
I wonder if it would have been possible to cut one of the Cans legs using a Dremel Tool so You could access the faulty Cap.
Auto Radios have always been difficult to work on. Even the ones from 1930 I have poked around in the Parts were crammed in, making it a Headache.

The most insidious car radio failure ever. KINA carried Rush Limbaugh on 910Khz IE 2x455Khz under the right conditions Delco ETR would fail so that you couldn't get rid of him no matter what station you tuned to.

The Ford AM radios were unchanged since the very early 70's maybe even 1969. Were actually considered the best in class for sound way back when AM had music not just religion and right wing religion like Limbaugh. In 60's -70's it was considered a big deal to have 2 speaker AM radio in giant apartment sized cars. Also thinking this maybe the 1st broken one I ever saw. The Delcos didn't break much either

Man you need a freaking tripod for your camera, either that or a third arm, or a cameraman.

Who would listen to music (of any kind) on AM radio?

No offense intended but.... why would someone restore a Ford Fairmont, (AKA Mercury Zephyr with a different trim)? I mean it was one of their most embarrassing moments in that era. To each his own I guess.
