- Nathan and I are back on another overnight canoe trip down the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The class 1 and 2 rapids were pretty tame this go around since the water levels were low but we had a blast anyway. This trip is what I think the essence of this channel embodies: finding the adventure around you! Hope you enjoy - Clint

Thanks for sharing this trip. Several years ago a friend of mine & I built a homemade "raft" out of scrap lumber and other parts. It ended up being 8' wide and 16' long. Floatation provided by 8 55 gallon plastic drums. We took the exact same route as you did here. Put in at Buckhorn Dam and went all the way to the take out site in Lillington. The most difficult part for the raft was within a mile of the Buckhorn Dam there is a rocky area from shore-to-shore. It has a nickname I forget but we had to manhandle the raft over every one of those rocks in the river... We also went to the right side at Lanier Falls which made for an exciting time. :) Next time I think we will go with a canoe as you did and take it a little easier.
Sounds like an awesome experience! We’d like to go again when the weather is warmer and run some of the rapids again with a little less worry about dumping/getting wet.

Do you know if the water in this river is safe to drink (after filtering) and if you can eat fish from the river? Hoping to run ~100 miles of the cape fear this spring
that's a great question and I will admit that I don't know enough to give a confident answer. I do know that there are sources of PFAS in the Cape Fear Watershed (link below). I've done a little research to see if your typical "hiking" filters will remove those and I can't find much, but my hunch is no. Seems the best filters for that kind of removal are carbon and reverse osmosis filters which typically would not include many hand held filters.
It is possible that the short term effects from drinking/filtering this water for your trip would be very minimal but again that's not a professional opinion. If it were me, I would pack as much as I could and try to refill when possible at certain points along the way. There are many cities that the Cape Fear passes near and it might be possible to have some dropped off along the way or maybe a local homeowner wouldn't mind you stopping by their outside spigot... definitely will take some planning though. I would assume the fish are safe to eat in moderation.
