What ingredients and products do you personally find problematic for your skin? For my skin it's SLS (tends to dehydrate my already dehydration-prone skin), and most sunscreens clog my pores :(
SLS/SLES 100% aggravates eczema/dermatitis on my skin and its taken me years to work out shea butter causes clogged pores on my cheeks . So now i avoid anything with both ingredients and hey presto clear smooth skin! SPF is ok as long as I really cleanse my skin afterwards, like triple cleanse including an oil massage. Annoying init ;) Love your channel mIssy Muffin xoxo
Every single CeraVe product I've tried has stung my skin, some worse than others (the infamous hydrating cleanser burned and tingled immediately upon contact). So one of the most popular, affordable, easily accessible brands for skin repair and maintenance is one I have to avoid :( Also, most "all natural" skincare I've tried seems to clog my pores terribly, even the vegan version of CeraVe lotion, called Ceramedx. The only specific ingredient I've narrowed down as being problematic is coconut oil, which clogs my pores with regular use. The major irritants such as essential oils and fragrance are ingredients I already avoid due to my highly sensitive, rosaceatic skin, and I'm not willing to experiment with my face to find out my individual sensitivities lol.
I cannot believe this video isn't more popular - this should be required viewing for anyone interested in skincare (and especially skincare youtubers) Thanks indeed!
Love your videos! Could you make one on ingredients that are 'not supposed to go together', for example niacinamide and vitamin C? I've heard such conflicting things about whether they cancel each other out or not and I'd love to hear what you have to say! Also The Ordinary's EUK isn't supposed to be mixed with niacinamide but no where says whether that's because they supposedly cancel each other out or if it's because it'll create a reaction!
I heard it has been later debunked that L-ascorbic acid and niacinamide shouldn’t be used together. So that too is old (and fake) news. I would avoid putting too many chemical exfoliating ingredients at the same time just to avoid irritation. (Or do such a foolish thing as dermaplane and add acids after it!...it burned😵) But there’s quite a much of contradicting information about which actives should and shouldn’t be used together. So my best bet is to try and see if irritation occurs... But it could be useful to get a video about this on this channel too. I have watched such videos from other channels, and the problem is that they always tell you advise that you don’t want to hear, like “don’t combine acne treatments!”...yeah right, I’ll just watch and wait a week for this enormous volcano to disappear, because you shouldn’t even put certain actives on active inflamed acne!?! Doing nothing is impossible and trying everything is what people usually gear towards.
The „problem“ could be that niacinamid tends to be niacin in a acidic environment. Niacin is highly irritating on skin, maybe that’s the reason, why people talk like this about this combination 🤷🏻♂️
Noora h actually dermaplaning followed by a peel is a common practice in many esthetician and med spa settings, removing the dead skin allows the peel to work better. Definitely don’t want to overdo it though and best done by a professional
Great video! Please talk about alcohol and alcohol denat in skincare, that is, whether or not to use product with alcohol high in the ingredients list.
I'm so glad you make videos like this. We need more UA-cam content from scientists!! I especially love how you explain everything thoroughly. There are so many beauty "influencers" out there with zero expertise spreading their opinions about skincare. I've learned so much from your channel and it has really helped me form a solid skincare routine :)
SLS, olive oil, and lavender oil cause huge problems for my skin, but coconut oil, peppermint, and most products with rose cause no negative reactions. Super fascinating video btw! It’s so refreshing to see a see a science-based skincare channel that doesn’t present certain research as absolute facts. So many people seem to say “well some studies show reactions so never ever use it” or something similar.
Thank you! Scientists in general tend to be cautious in applying the science to real life situations, especially in skincare where there aren't that many studies to go off :)

Good video! I was already using the scale as a mildly useful idea rather than gospel. My skin has so far shown no discernible relationship between products and breakouts
Another great and very informative video. Please also consider talking about what active ingredients should or should not be used together eg niacinamide and vitamin c (ascorbic acid), retinol, aha, bha or benzoyl peroxide and other actives and so on. There is so much confusion around what can be used together and what not. Please also do a video on the use of sulphates and silicones in hair care. Thank you in advance.
This was very informative. It is great to have someone, who actually have the idea of how whole the process looks like, teaching us. Unlike all those beauty gurus whose knowledge about the ingredients is extremely limited. Btw here is a question. What about ceramides? Do they really work the way the producents say? Is it worth using ceramides cream for dehydrated, destroyed by over-exfoliation skin?
That's a good question, but it has a complicated answer! From the last time I checked, certain ratios were good for certain skin conditions, but the studies were only in compromised skin... but I'll have to actually look it up!

hi, Michelle! I recently used a cleansing balm with its first ingredients being Ethylhexyl Palmitate and I just checked it rates 4-5 in comedogenic rating. I double cleanse daily but that one time I accidentaly use a lot of the balm and clean my face afterward super quickly. the next day I had a lot of comedones emerging! the following night I still use the balm and the cleanser but massaging my face when im using the cleanser. surprise, surprise; no more emerging comedones! I don't exactly know what happens but make sure y'all clean that balm properly!
I love your channel! Can you do a video about dimethicone/other silicones?? I’ve heard a lot about how bad dimethicone is for your skin but can’t find any actual evidence. It is in SO many skincare products I’m wondering if I should continue avoiding it or not.. Thanks!
Dr Dray, a youtube dermatologist, has said that dimethicone is a good ingredient to have in a (face) moisturizer. She has also explained that mineral oil and parabens are ok. Just watch her channel if you want to hear scientifically proven skincare advise. She is quite hardcore in keeping it 100% scientific and not approving use of irritating ingredients such as fragrance. I am such a hard head that I keep on playing Russian roulette with my skincare and risk on getting a fragrance allergy later on... but I like that she won’t ever recommend products that have fragrance, even naturally derived, because essential oils are just as bad as synthetic ones. I have figured out that my scalp doesn’t like silicones so I use silicone free hair products, but for my face it seems to be ok. I just wonder can it have a difference that I wash my face 2 times a day but wash my hair every 3-4 days? I have no idea. The silicone made my scalp itchy.

😂😂😂 Tati knows what she is doing. Talking about "clean ingredients" to market her own brand. She is misleading her subscribers, but you can't teach someone to be ethical.
I always make this point. Ingredients in a product are different than using data from isolated ingredients. As an example, retention hyper-keratosis is the main issue. We just made at home peel that estheticians sell their client. It is coconut meat based, but because it has both acid and enzymes it hydrates while it clears. We also added FOS which is good food for the skins microbiome, this increases cell turnover as well.
Great video! The scale uses exaggerated ratings just to be safe. So instead of taking the average score, they will use the maximum. You can't use the comedogenicity scale as the only truth. There's lots of other factors. And then you have people who use that rating as the only argument for or against products without looking any further into it...
Thank you! My skin loves coconut oil (especially as a first cleanse) but people look at me like an idiot for using it. If it works for me, leave me alone!
I know that anything that contains coconut oil will break me out for sure, the same goes for shea butter and olive oil.. while avocado oil and cocoa butter wont clog my pores. SLS of any kind is just no no, it dries my oily skin so i produce more oil that will clog my pores. Even when it comes to consistency of a moisturizer anything that's in form of a cream will clog my pores.
My skin is really sensitive to certain ingredients, like denatured alcohol and fragrances. Also some essential oils, although that one is honestly a lottery on whether it will cause irritation or not. In general I just stick to very mild and soothing products because they're the safest bet. I have fairly dry skin and am very prone to dehydration, so I don't really get acne (I do get some pimples here and there, though), except when I use a product with coconut oil in it. It actually took me a while to figure out what it was that was making me break out so suddenly! It was from one of my hair products. My hair is very dry and coarse and frizzy and just loves coconut oil. If I'm not careful when applying, I will get breakouts where my hair touches my face/neck/shoulders.
I have the same issue with my hair and conditioners! Especially conditioner with lots of fatty alcohols and amodimethicone - I get bacne breakouts a lot these days if I don't scrub my back properly after conditioner.

True. I used Secret key lemon peeling gel and it broke me out like crazy. I have never had such bad acne like that. I didn't think it was the culprit at first, but then I used it once per week for 2 weeks, the results were the same. Even though the comedogenic rating of the ingredients mostly are 0-1, and the ingredient list is not that long. I still have no idea what ingredient caused me break out.
Love your videos! I would really like to hear your thoughts on medical grade skincare. I know in the US FDA doesn’t control them however I see most derms recommend them. I feel a little lost if I should buy a medical grade product or not.
Hi Mitchell, ¡what a great video!, the comedogenic scale is totally useless, we are not rabbits, what really matters is if the combination of ingredients in skincare and cosmetic products we buy, works for our skin. Thank you and loves 😘
Yeah, checking the first five ingredients is the best thing to do. Usually, if they are high, just stay away. Thats the only time the comedogenic rating is useful but it becomes weird when cocoa butter or coconut oil is high up on the scale and its fine on for so many people..
Coconut oil breaks me out like mad. It's sad because it makes my hair super soft; but if I use it I wake up with whiteheads on my hair line and quickly develop pimples on my scalp.
Thank you so much for putting the knowledge out there! Also, listening to you this ep made me realise I did take away something from those Research Methods classes after all 😅
Ugh, Moisturizers! I cannot find a moisturizer that doesn't break me out :( I'm now trying buying things individually and seeing if I can figure out what causes me to breakout within hours of a moisturizer. I've tried SO MANY that are supposed to be safe and it always results in an abundance of whiteheads.
I’m sorry to hear that, maybe it’s not for your skin :(( in my case it’s different when I just found out myristyl myristate (a highly comedogenic ingredient) in my fav dermatologist recommended oil-free moisturizer (it’s TDF ultra light moisturizer), and it works well on my oil acne-prone skin, all the best for your skincare journey :))
I would like if you did a video on silicones, especially cyclic siloxanes since I have heard a lot of controversy about them being potentially harmful for people and environment
Great video! Now I know why my skin never agreed with the lists. I have been using your 5 Minute Vitamin C recipe and beginning to see results. So I decided to look up the PubMed you referenced. Now I want to add Vit E & Ferulic Acid since it shows 2x's the protection. I know PubMed doesn't. state the anti-aging benefits but I am willing to make that assumption. I was wondering if you could recommend a supplier for Ferulic Acid. The chemical companies in the US won't sell to me. Lotioncrafter is one that has "papers", but they look sketchy. THX!
I'm still on my way in figuring out what my sensitive skin can and can't handle. This video was very helpful, though, thank you ❤ Also, I'd love to hear your opinion on those patches you can put on your soles and that are supposed to extract toxins from your feet. Sounds like a scam to me, but could it actually work?
They are a scam. Skin contains nothing in its organ system function that allows for the "toxins" more accurately called waste products that your liver and kidneys can't handle. If your endocrine system cannot excrete something, you are in need of immediate medical attention, not a patch to the bottom of the foot. The black stuff on the bottom is a mix of dissolved dead skin cells, essential oils, and oxidized active ingredients that turned black after being exposed to air.
Hi Michelle! Thank you so much for your great blog and videos. Your advice and knowledge has helped me a lot. Would you mind doing a video or a blog post on Heliocare and/or other edible sunscreen supplements and if they are worth using alongside sunscreen? My first reaction is to assume that it's snake oil, but Dr. Dray recommends it and I have found some research indicating that these supplements can help the body recover from UV exposure (granted, these studies were found through the Heliocare website, but some looked to be from legit journals). Thank you again!
Oils are comdogenic for my skin. But I need something more than moisturizer to sooth itchy dry patches on my face and eyelids. I've just come across squalane. Is pure squalane an oil?
Love the piece of skin maquette (dermis, epidermis, etc) we can see to the side of the vid... Would love to get one too, where did you get it from? Thanks :) x
Great video! So when silicones are in gel moisturizers do I need to worry about them clogging pores? Everyone talks about how silicones are comedogenic but almost every gel moisturizer or lightweight moisturizer has silicones in it! Even a lot of serums I find silicones in. PLEASE HELP!
Can you explain why the position of an ingredient in the ingredients' list is significant. From context I'm assuming that the first ingredients exist in higher percentages than those towards the end of the list ...?
yeah, they are listed from highest amount to lowest amount. also, I believe if there is less than 1% of an ingredient in a product, a brand can list those ingredients in any order (as long as its after the ones with more than 1% of course)
Oh also, I have another question (unrelated to the video), but if I’m using retinol products, which speed up cell turnover rate, what does that to do to the skin cell telomeres?
Hello, if i use a chemical sunscreen (one that does not have avobenzone) under my bbcream with zinc oxide, is the chimical sunscreen still working? And if i use my bb cream with zinc oxide and then i want to layering suncreen trough the day with chimical only, is the chmical sunscreen working?Thank you very much
After a shower how do you keep your thirsty fingertips from soaking up all of your expensive face creams without applying hand lotion which will then wind up on your face?
Hey michelle! because you said the back skin isnt like the face skin - where am i supposed to carry out the patch test? I kind of heard behind the ears would be a good spot bc the skin ist very similar (and actually right next) to face skin
Off topic, but I was in a conversation about baby formula yesterday. When the topic of CHEMICALS!!!! was raised, I thought, "Lab Muffin needs to put her Chemicals mug graphics on a baby bottle."
straight coconut oil seems to break me out, but products with coconut ingredients dont. i also have current speculations that octinoxate breaks me out but i really hope not because my favorite sunscreen has it 😢
@@MeetMrsRobinson do you know what makes them harmful? also, am currently working on finding a cheap physical one with a high enough uva1 and 2, and uvb coverage that doesnt give white cast or w weird texture. its definitely taking forever 😂
@@Tatertotrocks the active ingredients (like octinoxate) damage coral reefs. I dont know in depth how and why, but I know its serious. Its not hard to find reputable articles. I hope that helps!

Sunscreen clogs me like crazy and it's a huge pain in the arse. I already need to use all nature skincare due to my skin being extra sensitive (I'm literally allergic to fragrance and most ingredients in non natural products give me a rash) and now I can't even protect myself from the sun without waking up like a strawberry the next morning 😭
Is have the same issues with sunscreens 😩and coconut oil completely wrecks my skin whereas others I know have no issues. Wait testing bikes on a test track 🤔😂
I realize that plastic is quite a broad category of product, but I was wondering if it would be possible to do a video in it? I got new lipsticks and new eyeshadow bases - i like them because they stay put but as far as I can tell they All contain quite a big amount of carbomer (which to my knowledge i plastic), so I am a little worried wether I am actively "poisoning" myself by using it😅 We all know not to eat plastic - but most people don't actually read the ingridients 🤔 IT might make a difference based on type like with alcohol but I have No Idea😅 Also - is there actually any benefit to having Aloe Vera in anything?🤔 I'm allergic so I stay away, but I would like to know anyway 😂
Came here after asking myself, do "comedogenic" ingredients in different formulations still cause acne? Thank you for not making me fear the majority of skincare. 😄

Amazing video! Thank you and keep doing this kind of videos 😊
Apparently, I have rabbit ear skin on my face, duh.
Love this video, great information. I really appreciate your channel!
Some of your best work. Thank you, Michelle!!
Hi Mitchell, ¡what a great video!, the comedogenic scale is totally useless, we are not rabbits, what really matters is if the combination of ingredients in skincare and cosmetic products we buy, works for our skin. Thank you and loves 😘
such a good video! very informative
Yeah, checking the first five ingredients is the best thing to do. Usually, if they are high, just stay away. Thats the only time the comedogenic rating is useful but it becomes weird when cocoa butter or coconut oil is high up on the scale and its fine on for so many people..
Please talk about fragrance in cosmetics
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Coconut oil breaks me out like mad. It's sad because it makes my hair super soft; but if I use it I wake up with whiteheads on my hair line and quickly develop pimples on my scalp.
Perfect explained. Grazie 🙏🏼
amazing. i wish i watched this earlier.
Have you tried moisturizing gels?
have you tried la roche posay sensitive moisturiser, it’s so lightweight and has like 7 ingredients
I used a cream with Myristyl Myristate for months and thought my acne was just "naturally" appearing. :(
I’m sorry to hear that, maybe it’s not for your skin :(( in my case it’s different when I just found out myristyl myristate (a highly comedogenic ingredient) in my fav dermatologist recommended oil-free moisturizer (it’s TDF ultra light moisturizer), and it works well on my oil acne-prone skin, all the best for your skincare journey :))
AMAZING VIDEO! Thank you so much for educating the masses (me included!) :)
I would like if you did a video on silicones, especially cyclic siloxanes since I have heard a lot of controversy about them being potentially harmful for people and environment
michelle are you gonna do a video on red light therapy 🙃🙂🙃🙂🙃
It's on the list!
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience yaaaaay omg ty
Lab Muffin Beauty Science and blue light!
THX!
If I start yelling about bunny ears and back skin, I just get eye rolls from my family at this point.
I love your videos so much!
I'm still on my way in figuring out what my sensitive skin can and can't handle. This video was very helpful, though, thank you ❤
Also, I'd love to hear your opinion on those patches you can put on your soles and that are supposed to extract toxins from your feet.
Is it strange that I’m super sensitive to Aloe?? I always find that I break out from it but it’s in so many products.
Thanks :) x
what about the non-comedogenic label on products specially sunscreen does it mean anything or is it just nonsense marketing.
Are coconut alkanes coconut oil? Plz help
Yea but how do you patch test for acne?
I have a silicone sponge I use to get the product on my face. I've seen silicone brushes for mud masks which may be useful for you.
Coconut products, lavender oil, Niacinamide and vitamins with high B12 counts cause havoc on my skin. Excellent and informative video. :~))
Hey michelle! because you said the back skin isnt like the face skin - where am i supposed to carry out the patch test? I kind of heard behind the ears would be a good spot bc the skin ist very similar (and actually right next) to face skin
This video was amazing, but reminded me how unpredictable and sad reality is lol
[Gordon Ramsey Voice] delicious, finally, some good f*cking nuance
loved this video
I read the title as Comedogenic Paintings at first and I was like ew?
"If you breathe in humid air, it's actually quite nice"
Sentences that can only be said by those who don't live where the air is soup.
This is like wiki of info in skincare
So nice info
SLS yes for me too. Witchhazel too drying and you need to try the Purito green level sunscreen
Wait, so is Vaseline comedogenic?
I would say some organic sunscreens.
Very interesting. Thanks ☆☆☆☆
Can you please make an investigative video about Claire's asbestos contaminated make-up?
Off topic, but I was in a conversation about baby formula yesterday. When the topic of CHEMICALS!!!! was raised, I thought, "Lab Muffin needs to put her Chemicals mug graphics on a baby bottle."
Hahaha I'm working on stickers! 😉
Michelle, does or at least do you think, that research loose credibility through out time?
Depends on the research - some really old research is still valid, e.g. Newton's laws of motion are still valid, and it was published in the 1680s.
straight coconut oil seems to break me out, but products with coconut ingredients dont. i also have current speculations that octinoxate breaks me out but i really hope not because my favorite sunscreen has it 😢
Physical sunscreens are best, the chemical sunscreen ingredients can be harmful to your skin but are also definitely harmful to the environment!
@@Tatertotrocks I have been using the Biore UV aqua rich watery essence. Tbh idk if it is a chemical or physical sunscreen so i dont swim with it on. I also use neutrogena sensitive skin. It is a physical sunscreen. If you follow skincare blogs or subreddits its easy to find recommendations!
@@MeetMrsRobinson thanks!!
You rock!
I put vaseline over my lotions!:)
Why are so many face moisturizer with spf irritating
Is have the same issues with sunscreens 😩and coconut oil completely wrecks my skin whereas others I know have no issues. Wait testing bikes on a test track 🤔😂
Baby pimples, that's so cute.😂 However, they don't look cute at all on my face. 😒
Rip poor bunnies 🐰🙏
Poor bunnies 😞
I realize that plastic is quite a broad category of product, but I was wondering if it would be possible to do a video in it?
I got new lipsticks and new eyeshadow bases - i like them because they stay put but as far as I can tell they All contain quite a big amount of carbomer (which to my knowledge i plastic), so I am a little worried wether I am actively "poisoning" myself by using it😅
We all know not to eat plastic - but most people don't actually read the ingridients 🤔 IT might make a difference based on type like with alcohol but I have No Idea😅
Also - is there actually any benefit to having Aloe Vera in anything?🤔 I'm allergic so I stay away, but I would like to know anyway 😂
i lub u
My mum's skin has not been reading about this, because she has no problems with the ingredients, but she has very dry skin...
😂

You’re so cute 🥰
U put stuff on that stuff d animals ears... leave him alone...... give me him..... unlike u I will not dirty hi, ears...
Came here after asking myself, do "comedogenic" ingredients in different formulations still cause acne?
Thank you for not making me fear the majority of skincare. 😄
