Create Perfect Score Lines with the Silhouette Embossing Tool

- Silhouette has finally given us the ability to create REAL score lines!! I used the embossing tool and the Cameo 5 to give these 3d purses the perfect finished look - and they are going to make adorable Easter baskets.
I grabbed this design from the Silhouette Design store and I walk through sizing and organizing the pieces before heading to the Send Tab to set up the scoring and cutting.
I also show you how to get rid of the awful perforated cut lines and replace them with proper solid score lines.
Carriage 1 handles the cutting with the autoblade, and Carriage 2 takes care of the score lines with the embossing tool.

Art Glitter Glue!!!! The BEST. And you need to get the My Sweet Petunia glue gun! And thank you for all you do for us Silhouette users.
I also use Art Glitter Glue. Its not glue with glitter in it. It's amazing!!!!
I started crafting when I came across to SVGCuts years ago and Mary would use Scotch Quick Drying Tacky Glue. I love this glue... I only use that and hot glue for my projects. Thanks you so much for all the tips!
Tombow glue is the best! been in the papercraft industry for 25 years. White bottle green lid! ❤❤
Why wouldn't you just change the perforated line style to solid and change the color, instead of removing the existing perforated lines and adding new ones? That is what I would have done, so I don't have to worry about the line placement. Just curious.
Yep, silhouette software is like Windows in that there is always at least 5 ways to do things😂.
After trying several other popular brands including Tombow, I've found that Art Glitter Glue works really well for paper. It allows some repositioning when wet, sets quickly, residue can be easily removed without damage, easy to clean from surfaces(& hands), & has a lasting strong bond without bulk. Make sure you use the precision tip that comes with it & don't lose the pin! If you're not going to use it often, rinse out the tip & cap the bottle to prevent clogging.
Red.Line tape is my favorite for 3D
My favorite glue is Dutch Doobadoo. Many ppl, many choises 😀. Thank you for this nice lesson!
Beacon Fabri-Tac it is a permanent adhesive and it is superior! Dries fast and stays put!
This is my favorite glue to use. It dries quickly and holds everything together really well. Tombow 62195 Mono Multi XL Liquid Glue
I've used their tape runner before and really liked it. I'll give it a try. Thank you!!
I love your idea for the embossed line. I have always had problems with scored envelopes and the handling by the post office. I have the embossing tool and will give it a try today. BTW, I use Bearly Art glue for all my dimensional paper projects and cards and it holds up great.
The Posh Paper Lady on UA-cam got me hooked on Reptile glue. It’s awesome! I definitely need the embossing tool. I’ve been replacing the dashed lines with solid lines and then using the auto blade set on the very lightest pressure & depth. However, it does still cut the top layer of card stock, and that bugs me when the inside of the card stock is white.
I am really glad Silhouette came out with an embossing tool. That was one of the things I hated about the machine, not being able to embossing fold lines. I use either Art Glitter glue or Bearly Art glue for fast holding, and Beacon 3in1 glue for strong holding of bases or things if you want to put heavier things in the base. Thanks for the tutorial on the embossing tool. Can this be used in the cameo 4?
I still need to do a glue review. LOL. I'll add these to the list of things to try. The embossing tool will not work in the 4, unfortunately.
My crafting glue of choice has been bearly crafts. I got extra tips but it works great! 5-15 seconds to hold depending on tension
I have to order some. It's been highly recommended!
These are adorable!! thank you for another great video
Have you tried E-6000? It’s pretty powerful. Are you using the embossing mat?
I like to score first and then cut. I have had some issues with the embossing tool getting stuck and skipping over cut lines - made a mess! Might have been a fluke, but I score first anyway, just to be safe.
I've just recently been playing with cutting and scoring, but using the blade and I can't wait to get my hands on the embossing tools! I also wasn't sure about cutting first, but I found certainly on cut by layer, you can drag the tool passes around, to change the order of operation, and it was much better with the score first.
@@edwardholmes91Agreed!
I do a lot of big 3D wall art and Art Glitter Glue is the best. Soon I will try the Bearly Art Glue, that one is perfect too I hear
Hi! I don't find the pen embossing tool for cameo 5 ? Can you send the link please ? Or it's a pen cut normal ? Thanks ❤
I was excited to finally do an actual score with my Cameo 4, sadly discovered embossing tool isn't for Cameo 4. 😢
I also use Art Glitter Glue and I agree it is the Best! Also If you are making a project that will have a lot of "moving parts" I also use Scor-Tape, putting the tape down and then a thin line of the glue on top. It works great.
I'll have to look into the Scor- tape!!
I make a lot of books and the best adhesives that I use are PVA ph neutral glue and Scor-tape double sided tape from Sookwang. You can’t go wrong with them and they are also archival products which means they will not yellow your paper being that they are acid free.
I'm going to order both of these! Thank you. ☺️
Bearly Arts Glue
Does it work with the cameo 4?
Thanks for another great video! I'd decided on Silhouette but the score feature was what swayed my decision to wait for the Cameo 5. I can't wait to get my hands on the scoring tools and will be sure to revisit your video once I've got them.
With regards to glue, I recommend Bostik All Purpose for card projects... it's a little smelly, but works great and gives a little time before it fully sets. It used to be fantastic, but super smelly and they've changed it recently, so it's not as smelly, but also not as good... still better than white glue though and definitely permanent. If you can't find that, I'm told UHU All Purpose also works well, but never tried it myself.
Hi! I see it has been some months since this answer, did you get the cameo 5? Have you been able to test the debossing tool?
@@morgana6264 Paula, yes I got the Cameo 5 and have been very pleased with it. I got the embossing tools too, but haven't yet sat down and had a play with them. I've got an ideal project in mind though!
@@edwardholmes91 Nice! Good to know you’re enjoying it! I’m wanting to buy the cameo 5 mainly for the scoring and debossing features, can’t wait to try it!
ATG Tape Runner Gun, Art Glitter Glue or Bearly Arts Glue!
I love Gina K Connect Glue
Hello. Only thing I have a Cameo 4. So I tried straight line scoring for my paper purses... Epic fail. Tried multiple setting and the blade cut through. Any recommendations or suggestions. I don't like the perforated look either. Thank you. Love your videos. Just recently started following you. 👍🏾
I have heard you can use the pen adapter and a pen that has no ink, but I've never tried it. Might be worth a shot.
I am so ridiculously frustrated that the Cameo 4 was just left out of the product offerings for some kind of blunt score / emboss tool. I came from the Cricut world so I am still trying to make sense of all of the different machines and adapters for the Silhouette and mistakenly bought these for my Cameo 4. I’m planning to either use a 3D printed adapter for my Cricut scoring stylus, an engraving tip for a cb09 housing (that I may have to sand the tip down on), or maybe the empty ballpoint pen trick.
@@junello8354 I came from cricut as well, and the scoring stylus was the only thing I really missed. I had tried putting the cricut stylus in the Silhouette pen adapter, but it didn't set right enough in there to apply pressure.
@@silhouettesuccess ah shoot, am about to try the pen adapter next personally, will see how it goes for me. I did get the engraving tip for the cb09 but I also bought the rotary blade and am probably over hopeful that I can dull it down enough to make it a scoring wheel.
@@junello8354 if you keep the force really low, that might work. 💁♀️
Adtech adhesive runners are my personal favorite. Or some PVA glue, but you must spread that on both parts and let it get to the tacky state before putting pieces together, so it is a little fussy.
Can this be done in other machine besides the cameo 5?
At first he use a tape runner and then I put Nuvo glue on top of it. The tape runner gives it the initial stick then I hold it literally for seconds and the glue adheres.
This sounds like a good idea! I'll have to give that a try!
@@silhouettesuccessI’m sure you will be pleased 🧡
This is what I do as well!
Hi there! Love your tutorials! ❤ Q: Does the Embossing tool work with the Cameo 3?
When changing the perforated line to a solid line, I just use the line style tool at the top. This way I avoid making the solid line in the wrong place.
I can't always get that to work. I'm not sure why. 😕
I want to get the embossing tool. I can’t get the set yet, but I can get one did you use the wide or the fine tip embossing tool?
I used the fine tip, but I think either would work for score lines. They just announced an extra fine tip at the 2024 Summit. It will be coming out soon.
I just need to know if the embossing tool your holding fits the silhouette Portrait 3?
It does not, unfortunately.
Can I use this tool with the portrait 3?
can you help. at the top left corner of silhouette studio fill color is now the line color and the line color is now fill color. how do i change this.
do you use the embossing tool for the curio ?
You can use the embossing tool on the Curio or the Cameo 5.
Does it work the same or even better on the curio2? would it be same paper and tool settings?
Hi! Can you make the cameo start first with the score lines?
Hello. I obtained Embossing tools just recently. I don't know if you've found the answer in the meantime. It is a yes, with a little bit of work around. Namely, by being installed in the clamp 2, in the Standard Mode the machine will first cut and then emboss/score. An that's a problem. I experienced the tool hitting the cut lines and skipping, or rippling the cardstock. I am a long time Cricut user. Cricut has several scoring tools and they all work before cut. Consequently, I never experienced this issue with Cricut. So I made some research and found out that if I selected Line Mode, I was able to assign different colors to cut and embossing lines. In the line color panel you can easily change order of operations by changing order of the line colors. Concretely, I moved embossing line to the top of the line color layers and this automatically set the embossing operation to take place first. I dedicated some time to testing and results were very encouraging. It actually took me more time to make a good custom scoring setting for the materials I score and cut.
Thank you very much for your answer 😊
Art glitter glue is great
At 2:53 you add a line for scoring, how did you get the crosshairs? I can't seem to get those to make the line. Your crosshairs are just 'there', I have a hand and it does not draw a line.
Go to your drawing tools on the left-hand side of the screen and click on the line tool, and then you can click and drag for a line.
Thank you for the video, this tool is not for Cameo 4 😢
Is there a tool for cameo 4?
I think there are other brands that make embossing tools that will work, but the one for the cameo 5 will not work.
I don’t understand what you did to get the score line. Is it just a cut line that you changed the colour of?
Yep! You just want to delete the dashed line, replace it with a solid line in a different color. They need to be different colors so that the software will recognize the different functions in the Send Page.
@@silhouettesuccess ,got it. Thanks so much,
@@silhouettesuccess . I love Tombow glue. It is very strong and flows beautifully.
Try using contact cement!
why can't' you select your score lines and leave them in place, go to your line tab and change it to a solid line?
This will work for some designs but not others. I think it has to do with whether or not the original design was created with Silhouette Studio, but that's just a theory.
Mono Multi Liquid Glue
Why didn't you just change the line setting to solid instead of making new lines? You don't have to do any repositioning...
That will work with some designs, but not all. It depends on how the designer saved the file.
