Your lists are all good, and varied. It's good that you're all willing to dive deep into some of these older artists, and allow them to grow on you, just as you are when new music comes out. Low Spark and Barleycorn and Traffic are my favorites, but I grew up with them, unlike you guys. Good show
1. John Barleycorn Must Die 2. Mr. Fantasy (I like the goofy psychedelic tracks a lot!) 3. Traffic 4. The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys 5. When The Eagle Flies 6. Last Exit 7. Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory 8. Far From Home When The Eagle Flies could possibly end up #4 for me whenever I relisten to it, not sure.
Traffic .....well let's see one release I've never really listened to is Where the eagle flies, but I'm sure it has it's redeeming musical moments. For albums prior to "Eagle" l would rate my favorites:#6/Shootout #5/ Last Exit #4/Mr. Fantasy #3/ Low Spark #2 John Barley. #1/ Traffic (2nd)...I feel that the US. edition of Mr. Fantasy is better choice than original Brit. cover. It does not include Hope l don't find...& Utterly Simple which l think are week tracks and at the time when it was released l bought US. copy. Traffic gets accolades for me as being a very together piece of music.... strong writing... sounds like they in the right groove. Not a throwaway track on it for me. I would agree w/ Kramer.
I've listened to Traffic every since I was a baby (or shortly thereafter) so I was very familiar with all these albums. I find it difficult to pick a favorite album, but I must say it would have been one of the three #1 picks made by the guys. If I held a gun to my head it would have to be "When the Eagle Flies". Nice to see how much Jason appreciates this album. Growing up at the time it was released I can honestly say I didn't know anyone else who like this album the way I did. Its also my go to album for Traffic to this day followed by "John Barleycorn", "2nd album" and "Low Sparks". I agree with the observations regarding "Last Exit". I've always ranked it low mostly because of side 2. But, the best songs on it were also on my "Best of Traffic" album which I purchased in the same year that "Last Exit" came out. So, I never bought "Last Exit" until much later on.
1. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys 2. John Barleycorn Must Die 3. When the Eagle Flies 4. Shoot Out at Fantasy Factory 5. Mr. Fantasy 6. Traffic 7. Last Exit 8.. Far From Home I’ve been a huge Traffic fan since I bought John Barleycorn back in 1970. You guys did really good with this band ranking video. 👍👍👍
Nice list, Al. I’m a big fan of the first two albums on your list. About two years ago, I saw Steve Winwood in concert. Stellar. I am a huge Dave Mason fan. I’ve seen Mason in concert many times and even had an opportunity to chat with him. He is better than ever. He just released a newly recorded version of Alone Together. If you want a real treat, go to his UA-cam channel. There are some very recent interviews. Best wishes.
I really like Shanghai Noodle and Medicated Goo a lot, but can’t understand dissing some of Mr Fantasy for being ‘goofy’ and yet liking Shanghai and Medicated, which you could say are goofy too, but it was the psychedelic era so...soak it up and enjoy
One of the rare cases where my favourite album of a band is a live one Traffic On the Road from the 1973 Tour and representing their peak period. I find the first albums interesting still but somehow they are children of the late 60s and a bit nostalgic. Their later albums however are timeless. I should not even mention Far From Home or Last Exit but will do for completeness. My number 1 + 2 are almost interchangeable. 1. Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory 2. Low Spark of High Heeled Boys 3. When the Eagle Flies (This one almost sounds like Steely Dan, it grows with each listening) 4. Traffic 5. John Barleycorn Must Die 6. Mr Fantasy 7. Far From Home (a very unnecessary reunion) 8. Last Exit (only one studio side, the other side live from Fillmore West, studio side sounds like leftovers and the live is their worst live release, take On the Road or even Welcome to the Canteen) PS - I love this band since 50 years and regardless of how you rank them yourself, thank you for giving the band a video...Yes, When the Eagle Flies is a hidden gem, it takes more time than the others but it is worth giving it more than one try.
Another enjoyable survey of a seminal (but sometimes overlooked) band. Their influence, especially on late '60s-early-'70s British rock was huge. In that way, they remind me of The Band; lots of space in the music. Traffic helped develop a musical approach transitioning from ornate psychedelia to a more stripped-down, eclectic approach that many other bands also explored (P.Floyd, Procol Harem, Donovan, F.Mac, The Family, etc.). Because their discography was fairly consistent, any ranking could work and all three of you did a convincing job with your choices. I remember hearing "Dear Mr Fantasy" played in a cheesy anti-drug movie (GO ASK ALICE) and my jaw dropped. The American version of the debut was a revelation and I followed the band through their classic period. My sentimental favourite is still ...BARLEYCORN... but all the albums are worthy of attention. I'd also recommend the two-disk SMILING PHASES on Island Records. This compilation includes a lot of the strong, stand-alone singles. (The band could use a decent box set, if those things are still a thing.) As with a few of the other comments below, Traffic live is worth further exploration. WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN (a Traffic album in all but name) is an early lo-fi gem and TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD is a more complete picture of the expanded band. What it lacks in passion is made up in musicianship & groove. Great job, guys!
"Barleycorn" is genius and even gets included in collections of British folk-rock (e.g. THE ELECTRIC MUSE box). Traffic can be divisive, there's no doubt. The people who don't 'get them' describe Traffic as wankers, noodlers, or utterly pretentious. Their loss, of course, but remember that music is quite subjective. Check out the questionable nominees for the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. At least Traffic got in (though not until 2004)! @@flynnlizzy5469
I have to agree with Jason that "When The Eagle Flies" is highly underrated. I'm not a big fan of "Dream Gerrard" - that reoccurring motif or hook or whatever you call it that's played thru the first 5:38 of the song is more annoying than anything at the moment. But the rest of the album is very strong. The correct answer for #1, though, has to be The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. The "rockers" - "Rock And Roll Stew" and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone" - drop the album down a smidge, but the rest of the album is immaculate to my ears. With various bands, I agree with each of you at different times. It's interesting to see how each video plays out. You guys have a fine channel going here, and it should be more well known. (I'm still working on the albums I've not heard in Neil Young's discography - I don't know how you guys did it in such a short period of time. I'm currently up to Hitchhiker. Neil Young is beating me. But at the very least, I've got about 100 new songs of Neil's that I enjoy.)
I tried Traffic in my teens and didn't like them tried again in my thirties and still wasn't keen. It was only when I'd passed 50 and gained more of an appreciation for jazz, that I came to enjoy listening to the band. I have two routes into them when I'm in the mood. One starts with John Barleycorn and usually moves onto Low Spark. Both are 9/10 albums for me. The other is to listen to their live album from their reunion tour in the mid 90s called The Last Great Traffic Jam (10/10). This is Winwood and Capaldi supported by others but it has a great set list and the performances are excellent. Much better than their other two live albums. Very rarely do I venture into the other albums I have although I played the self titled album this morning and When The Eagle Flies yesterday. I'm looking forward to the Colosseum video. They are a band I always pair with Traffic for their jazz/blues influences.
Congrats on surpassing 2000 subscribers. You guys are killin' it with all the new content! Traffic was a band I never really paid attention to, but you've inspired me to check them out.
When the Eagle Flies is a Traffic album I've always overlooked. Now I'm going to have to check it out. I haven't heard most of the later albums but my top two would probably be Low Spark & John Barleycorn.
I just caught up with this. I was 13 in 1971 and loved Low Spark all the older kids had it was considered hip cool. Shootout was not just passable think Traffic’s time was starting to pass remember thought it was just ok. I’m 65 now just was relaxing in my lanai last night put on Shootout and loved it. Then listened to When the Eagle Flies same deal so great to discover thanks
"Who Knows What Tomorrow Will Bring" on "Traffic" lives as Winwood's closest approximation to Ray Charles. Love that--and "Heaven Is in Your Mind," "No Face, No Name, No Number"--classic stuff.
You guys summed up my feelings towards Traffic perfectly, good band, just no albums that really stood out. I own 4 of their studio LPs and one live one. This has motivated me to purchase the rest of them.
My traffic ranking: 1.The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys: 10/10 2.Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory: 10/10 3.John Barleycorn Must Die: 9,5/10 4.When The Eagle Flies: 9,25/10 5.Mr Fantasy: 7/10 6.Traffic: 6,5/10 7.Last exit: 6/10 8.Far From Home: 5/10
Jim Gordon on Welcome To The Canteen, and Low Spark. Greatest drummer for me. All their albums have great songs, but lots are weird too. Dear Mr. Fantasy song is probably their biggest classic song, but most would say Feelin’ Alright. Check out Medicated Goo track by PP Arnold. I can’t remember if Clapton and Delaney and Bonnie and Friends play on that track, but they play on other tracks on this unreleased album. Then obviously Mike Bloomfield playing Dear Mr. Fantasy live.
Just discovered this channel yesterday, great fun. I kept John Barleycorn and Low Spark and a 2 CD best of . Never the top of my list band but always enjoyed their music.
For me, Mr. Fantasy is by far their greatest album and one of the greatest albums ever. The only way it could be improved is if it included 'Hole In My Shoe' as its second track and 'Paper Sun' as its second-to-last one. Hey presto, a perfect rock album.
Excellent band to review . Not a lot of albums but all very good! Saw them in 1973 after shootout . 1. Traffic 2. Low spark 3. John barleycorn are interchangeable.
The keyboards bits at the end of Glad give me goosebumps, one of my fav instrumentals, but I get why it's controversial to open with it. Really enjoy your vids!
Jason, The Eagle is the end of Traffic. Good for you to get the point of Dream Gerrard. But, being from that period of time I consider Traffic and Steve Winwood the real double secret perfection of the Sixties. Just listen to Steve singing Georgia on my Mind and then playing jazz on Waltz For Lumumba..That woke me up a lot. Ja!
Good show, guys! Been a Traffic fan since I first heard “Paper Sun” during the Summer Of Love. My list is below. I must note that my ranking of ‘Mr. Fantasy’ is based on the U.S. release, which was titled ‘Heaven Is In Your Mind’ since that’s the one I grew up with and have always known. 8. Far From Home 7. Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory 6. When The Eagle Flies 5. Last Exit 4. Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys 3. John Barleycorn Must Die 2. Traffic 1. Mr. Fantasy/Heaven Is In Your Mind Congrats on 2,000 subscribers! I subscribed only a few weeks ago and it was at 1,200 so you're picking up new listeners quickly. I also like the idea of knowing who the next artist in the album ranking will be ahead of time - gives me the opportunity to refresh my memories or discover music for the first time.
Wild. I just submitted my list and then scrolled down for comments to find I have exactly the same list as you. Mr Fantasy #1 even without the peerless Paper Sun and Smiling Phases
Mr Fantasy is a top notch psychedelic album, one of the best ever...in my top 40 albums. BUT the 1968 album second album is a stone cold classic that is an album that puts them over the top with the best ever...and it’s in my top 15 albums of all time for me. Flawless, perfect acoustic hippie masterpiece alongside albums like Moondance. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Barleycorn is third fav for me. It took me a few listens for the first two records but they grow enormously over time, I recommend a few more listens and you’ll appreciate them much more. Good on you Kramzer and Joe for self titled lp
Good to see When the Eagle Flies getting some love.....I would put BLIND FAITH at the top of the list....it has some of Winwoods greatest songs on it and bar Claptons intrusion is a Traffic album in all but name
Hey there. I think I would enjoy knowing what you're going to be ranking the week before . Why not?! I think the link to your Twitter is broken though. It's saying the account doesn't exist. Thank you for the fun video. Catch y'all again tomorrow.
When the Eagle Flies is probably one of the 5 most under-rated albums of all time! Turn off the lights; position your headphones.......and dream, gerrard
Exactly. By the way, the rhythm team of Rosko Gee and Reebop joined German Krautrock legend Can after the Traffic split. They changed that band's sound quite a bit, making it more mainstream. (Reebop was fired already halfways through the album anyway.)
Traffic is one of the bands I've never really heard of. Now Hole In My Shoe for instance. I first heard that song on my CD of psychedelic music. And that's on that album. Maybe on the US album cause it's different from the UK. It's a goofy little acid trip of a song.
8. Last Exit 7. Traffic 6. When The Eagle Flies 5. Dear Mr. Fantasy 4. Far From Home 3. Shoot Out At Fantasy Factory 2. John Barleycorn Must Die 1. Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys
wow,Traffic was a band I considered in my top ten 30 years ago,and I never knew about When the Eagle Fly's! I gotta check it out! FWIW,John Barleycorn is my favorite followed closely by Low Spark. Oh and Traffic>>>Supertramp For sure
Interesting band kind of physadelic and folky with aspects of jazz and rock some amazing musicians came out of traffic overall not a bad album from traffic John barleycorn is probably my favourite album Traffic were the ultimate hippy band
I’m sure we will eventually, but next up is going to be a different solo artist from a band we covered previously on the channel. Thanks for watching! -Jason
@@TastesLikeMusic Sounds like a plan!... J----- just wanted to give you some due propts for the favorable notice on Dylan's Street Legal, long since my fav BD album.... Why oh why it doesn't receive it's justly praise I'll never know(I also luv that cover doorway shot of him looking down the street!)... Traffic's Eagle as your #1, huh?...Never spun it but now I KNOW I MUST HEAR IT based on your great taste in music... Take Care, Ghostrider Rick.
I think nearly everyone will concur that Supertramp was never the same band after Roger Hodgson left, so maybe a better (and more challenging) framing would've been the 7 Hodgson-era Supertramp albums vs. the 7 initial Traffic albums.
When talking about good jam bands, how can you not review The Grateful Dead? However, if you only review studio albums, you would be doing the Dead a great disservice..
But you can't expect anyone but the most dedicated fan to hear all the officially released live albums. I have about a dozen and I'm just scratching the surface. 1977 is my favourite year.
It's fascinating to hear you guys talking about these albums. Quite lukewarm at first, but then the enthusiasm you all had for particular songs made me feel your intro wasn't representative of your feelings. Maybe it was comparison fatigue. I often disagree wildly (as do you-an important part of the dynamic) but nearly always enjoy your lists n comments. Sorry, obviously I'm now an armchair psychologist. My best...
8 Far From Home 7.Shoot Out 6.When The Eagle Flies 5.Last Exit 4.Low Spark 3.John Barleycorn 2.Traffic 1.Mr Fantasy But...aside from 8-rightly described as not really a Traffic album (Steve's solo albums are mostly better than this, and just to confirm- to me it DID sound incredibly dated when it came out...), I adore every one of these albums, so there's no shame in being even 7th on this list.
Pretty underwhelming listening experience, but not terrible or anything. 8. Far From Home (1994) ★½ 7. Last Exit (1969) ★★½ 6. When the Eagle Flies (1974) ★★½ 5. Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory (1973) ★★½ 4. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971) ★★½ 3. John Barleycorn Must Die (1970) ★★★ 2. Mr. Fantasy (1967) ★★★ 1. Traffic (1968) ★★★ ★★★★★ - Masterpiece ★★★★½ - Really great ★★★★ - Great ★★★½ - Really good ★★★ - Good ★★½ - OK ★★ - Bad ★½ - Really bad ★ - Awful ½ - The worst
Shouldnt you have listened to all the albums prior to making a decision?? Plus dont you think somebody in their 60's should be involved. The oldest in your trio looks 40 at tops
Exactly my thought. I can think of more than 50 artists not covered yet by the channel that I would be more interested in... Still I watched the whole vid and kind of enjoy it

Good to see When the Eagle Flies getting some love.....I would put BLIND FAITH at the top of the list....it has some of Winwoods greatest songs on it and bar Claptons intrusion is a Traffic album in all but name
Light Up Or Leave Me Alone is a fantastic song
"Shout out..." is my favourite album.
the LOW SPARK title-track is simply awesome - studio & live versions
few bands got close to this......

Hey there. I think I would enjoy knowing what you're going to be ranking the week before . Why not?! I think the link to your Twitter is broken though. It's saying the account doesn't exist. Thank you for the fun video. Catch y'all again tomorrow.
Thanks for watching!
The information you're looking for is on Facebook and Instagram for sure!
Yeah the Twitter link is wrong. But the correct one is in all the videos!
The link on our banner should be fixed now as well. Thanks for the heads up. -Jason
I love the chuckle and head shake when Joe declares he has the "accepted order." Joe speaks for the common man! 10:05.
Boys I was late to this one as I was stuck in, erm, you know. Off to have listen now as I am late comer to this video and this band
I dont think these gentlemen really fully appreciate how great a singer Winwood is.
8. Last Exit
7. Traffic
6. When The Eagle Flies
5. Dear Mr. Fantasy
4. Far From Home

wow,Traffic was a band I considered in my top ten 30 years ago,and I never knew about When the Eagle Fly's! I gotta check it out! FWIW,John Barleycorn is my favorite followed closely by Low Spark. Oh and Traffic>>>Supertramp For sure
The definitive traffic album is live - Welcome to the Canteen
US Dear Mr Fantasy is my #1.
My favorite is the Mr Fantasy album
Interesting band kind of physadelic and folky with aspects of jazz and rock some amazing musicians came out of traffic overall not a bad album from traffic
John barleycorn is probably my favourite album
Traffic were the ultimate hippy band
Hey, J.... How about ranking Steve Winwood solo albums next?... Thanx so much for the content!... Ghostrider Rick
'You can kind of get away without listening to Traffic'. That's one of my music-based quotes for the year.
Do Blind Faith next.
A top 10 at least!
This is sick!
I’ve never seen Far From Home.
When The Eagle Flies is my least favorite but it sounds like Far From Home may be worse.
I think nearly everyone will concur that Supertramp was never the same band after Roger Hodgson left, so maybe a better (and more challenging) framing would've been the 7 Hodgson-era Supertramp albums vs. the 7 initial Traffic albums.
On the road is their best album
My best...
8 Far From Home
7.Shoot Out
6.When The Eagle Flies
5.Last Exit
4.Low Spark
3.John Barleycorn
2.Traffic
1.Mr Fantasy
But...aside from 8-rightly described as not really a Traffic album (Steve's solo albums are mostly better than this, and just to confirm- to me it DID sound incredibly dated when it came out...), I adore every one of these albums, so there's no shame in being even 7th on this list.
Pretty underwhelming listening experience, but not terrible or anything.

Three Americans discussing a British group! Ho Ho!
Did you know many rock bands are British. Wild huh! - Joe
Shouldnt you have listened to all the albums prior to making a decision?? Plus dont you think somebody in their 60's should be involved. The oldest in your trio looks 40 at tops
We did
@@TastesLikeMusic maybe I heard wrong but didn't the guy in front said he only listened to 4?
We cover a different artist every week and listen to their entire discography in the lead up. He had heard 4 of them heading into the week.
Why Traffic?
Exactly my thought. I can think of more than 50 artists not covered yet by the channel that I would be more interested in... Still I watched the whole vid and kind of enjoy it
I forget. Because they don’t have a Neil Young-esque discography, probably. - Joe
Steve Winwood Dave Mason nuff said.
Why not?
There is no worst traffic album. They are all good. Get some literacy in your use of words.
John, your words are hurtful. - Joe
