When i was about 9, i had a swiss army knife. While carving s piece of wood, the blade folded up onto my thumb and cut me pretty deep. That was absolutely a learning experience

Similar story, my brother was carving, which was a little trend within the 4 brothers in the family. The blade slipped and he cut his leg real bad, there’s still a scab now. The funniest part was that it was in the early morning so I was still sleeping, so I woke up to him sitting in the hallway bleeding everywhere. Wasn’t funny at the time but everything’s funny in hindsight.

Don’t let anyone say those Moras, or any other knife on your list is only for beginners. Mors Kochanski and Cody Lundin have both proven that a simple Mora is all you need if you know what you’re doing.

I’m 12 years old and I can agree these are great beginner knives, but I would also recommend the spyderco salt because one of them has a rounded tip and also it’s waterproof and rust resistant so you don’t have to worry about your kid getting it rusty

      MORA Basic has 2 models:
The 511 is very hard carbon steel, but rusty.
The 546 is stainless steel, dont rust, but not so hard steel as 511.
I have 546- it is excellent fixed blade knife for hard and wild works!
      Both MORAs costs only 6-10€.
All Spidercos are high qyality, but very expensive knifes 🤯
If kid losts her first knife- it is not so painful to lost MORA as to lost Spiderco.

Yes, started with an SAK and an Opinel. You don't necessarily have the strength and dexterity in your hands at a young age so the easy deployment was appreciated and the locking collar is simple to use. It's not too difficult to sharpen either when you develop to that point. There were no children's knives then and my parents trusted me but not one or two of my friends so the knife stayed on the property for a year or two, probably for the best i did have some dumb a*sed friends!!!

Hey I’m really enjoying your channel.
I got my first knife on my birthday in 1967. I was nine years old. It was the official Cub Scout pocket knife. It had a locking blade, can opener, bottle opener/screwdriver, and an awl.
My Dad told me “if you take it to school and someone sees it, they will take it away from you and you won’t have a knife any more.”
Not only did I take it to school every day, but I’ve carried a knife on me every day since that day (except for three months at MCRD San Diego).
The Eldris is a great knife, and if you put the handle into the sheath, it makes a full size handle. 👍🏼👍🏼

OK, I do have experience in Bushcrafting and Field Scouting....lots actually.
Here is my list of 4 tools all new out doors people need.
    1. Swiss Army FIELDMASTER knife
    2. A good Multi-tool
    3. A folding saw, for the money, I like CORONA.
    4. This tool depends greatly on the foliage you work in, hardwoods-hatchet with hammer. A jungle or swamp in the South, Machete.
These 4 tools are 100% WIN. Every single one is a win and has many uses.

3:27 I'm pretty sure that's a Handyman, not a Huntsman. Imagine that knife in the video without pliers and metal file, that is the Huntsman. It still has a woodsaw, scissors, 2 blades, a can opener, a bottle opener, corkscrew, awl, hook, tweezers and toothpick. Buy some FireAnt ferrorod firestarter that you can keep on the corkscrew and that is the BEST outdoors SAK in the 91 mm size.

Great video! Some great content on knives I've been interested in. I was looking at the Junior for my son when he is of age due to the blade design. My only concern is the saw is a victim of its own success, its so damn sharp and can tear through skin if not careful. However, if trusted with a saw, it looks great. As a noob, my first outdoor knife is the Swiss Army Camper. I purchased it for these reasons:
    - Reliable brand
    - Folding and minimal so its compact
    - Relatively cheap
    - Minimal urban only accessories (ie no screwdriver)
    - Two blades
    - Great saw
    - Other bonus accessories (ie awl)
    - Saw can strike a rod
    - Corkscrew or toothpick holder can hold after market fire starters to use with the saw...or if you are cheap like me, Gorilla tape a slightly larger rod to the side and you have a cheaper, easier to use alternative (can also stuff and tape dryer lint into the corkscrew if you roll it into a worm and twist it around)

    • @grimgranite
      @grimgranite  Рік тому +1

I’m glad it was helpful! What you said about the saw is spot on. It demands respect and practice to develop safe technique. The Camper is a very useful model indeed! The trick with the dryer lint is a fun one I haven’t seen! I will have to play around with that concept. Thanks for the comment!
