    I'm so grateful for this video! I made this tonight and I heated and held and combined and mixed for a minute and then set my timer to cool for 10 minutes. But before the 10 min was up I looked and saw the separation at the bottom and freaked out and began to stick blend like mad bc I thought it was ruined and I had made 250 mls! I think I have sonething down pat and boom! It's 2 steps backwards. But I'm lovin' the journey and I love your blog and videos.
    **EDITED by SL: It actually wasn't this recipe this time, I copied some percentages of sodium lactate etc. 😊 However, when I woke up this morning I was So disappointed bc it had separated!

    FYI plastic ziptop bags like you might use to make a piping bag are totally safe to wash on the top shelf of your dishwasher. Just open it up and spread the zipper around the tines in the washer. If you have trouble getting syringes or you'd like more control over the tip size.

    This came out wonderfully! I made the HA stock this morning the lotion this afternoon. I substituted bergamot (Bergaptene free of course)and added rose absolute. I also used NF wax as I don't have Olivem 1000. ( I hope to get some soon. ) I tested it on my daughters and they loved it. The smell is amazing. Thank you for this recipe. Can the distilled water be substituted with aloe vera juice?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 років тому +3

      You could replace 10-20% of the water with aloe vera juice; I would not recommend replacing all the water as this presents both a preservation challenge and adds quite a lot of electrolytes to the recipe, which may cause it not to thicken.

    Just a quick query, what type of liquid extracts you use in cooled down phase in your recipes, are they water soluble or oil soluble?

  • @crisfer22
    @crisfer22 6 років тому

    So, I just saw you using the syringe and I thought maybe it could be used as a permanent container? As an air-tight container but cheaper and reusable? I also hate having to throw away single use stuff. Of course it wouldn't look as cute, and wouldn't travel well at all, but for home? What do you think?
    I would also love to know your opinion on hialuronic acid and air humidity. I've read that it pulls water from the skin if the air is dry. I live in central Spain, so that would be a big concern. I've been looking for papers that would talk about specific air humidity thresholds but haven't found any.
    Thanks so much, Marie! I don't think I've ever commented, but I've been enjoying reading/watching you for years now!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 років тому +1

      Sadly this is an awful idea, and I know because I've tried it 😂 You can't turn off the dispensing, so the syringe is constantly leaking lotion, which means you have to store the syringe in something else, and then the lotion dries out. Dispensing is also very unpredictable, as I discovered when I tried to squirt out a wee bit of lotion and splattered my carpet and walls with it. Just use a proper container :P
      HA (and other humectants) are always applied WITH water. They then help hold that water to the skin. I wouldn't apply pure glycerin to my skin (for many reasons-stiiiiiiicky), but as part of a formula they help improve the performance of the formula.

      HA naturally occurs in the body (so you've already got a lot, and the fetus likely has some kicking around in it as well) and all the studies I've found say it is incredibly safe and non-irritating, so I can't see why not, though I am definitely not a doctor!

    Love your videos~I just subscribed your channel. Which preservative you would prefer to use in the facial lotion or cream? Germall vs Phenonip? Also, can I skip the distilled water and replace with only aloe vera juice or hydrosol? Thank you!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 років тому +2

      I like liquid germall plus; it is water soluble, which you want as water is the part of the formulation where microbial spoilage pops up, and it is harder to inactivate with emulsifiers like polysorbates. I don't recommend making things with entirely aloe/hydrosols: it presents a larger preservation challenge. That much hydrosol is likely to be overwhelming, scent-wise, and that much aloe may cause viscosity issues due to the electrolyte content.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      Hey! If something is flavoured I can guarantee it is not something you should use in skincare products-that sounds like food, not a cosmetic grade ingredient at all, and our stomachs and skin have very different needs! Vitamin C is quite a difficult ingredient to formulate with as it's very unstable; here's a good formula that will give you an idea of the requirements: theacidqueenblog.com/2016/01/12/fun-with-diy-skinceuticals-dupe-vitamin-c-tutorial/.

    here in Egypt it's not easy to get some of the ingredients and it makes me sad that I can't do the recipe. it's neither online nor in stores. so what I'm asking is could you please point what ingredients I can totally skip without ruining the recipe?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 років тому

      You can always check the substitutions list. For a lotion you can also refer to my basic "how to make a lotion" video to get an idea of what a very bare-bones lotion recipe looks like, but if you take out 60% of the ingredients you aren't so much ruining the recipe as just not making it anymore. It's sort of like asking for any everything pizza and then asking that all the toppings but the cheese be held back-it's still a pizza, but it's definitely not an everything pizza!

    H Marie, I can't find this information anywhere on google. But does Hyaluronic acid need to be at a certain ph to be bioavailable? And does it alter the Ph of the moisturiser? Or can you just treat it like glycerine for example and add it without too much thought about PH. Thanks :)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      pH is fairly unimportant with hyaluronic acid; if your formulation is skin-friendly your hyaluronic acid should be fine :) Happy making!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      I've never seen cosmetic grade panthenol sold as "Pantothenic Acid", though both are names for vitamin B5, which makes me wonder if you may have a food grade supplement? What you want is D,L-Panthenol, as "The human body readily absorbs DL-Panthenol through the skin and it rapidly converts D-Panthenol to Pantothenic Acid" (www.lotioncrafter.com/dl_panthenol.html).

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      You must use hydrolyzed silk, but the two things are not exclusive. I used hydrolyzed silk peptides; the "hydrolyzed" part indicates the product is water soluble. That is very important! The "peptide" part is related to the size of the particle.

    I have olivem 300 that I purchased for another recipe of yours would this work in this recipe? I have so many surfactants and emulsifiers that I have bought and only used for one recipe that I’m becoming overcrowded with them and nothing to do with them! I have no idea what to do with olivem 300 if not using it here.

      As a general rule of thumb, you can never use Olivem300 for Olive1000 or vice-versa; they're SUPER different and do totally different jobs. I do have probably at least a dozen recipes using Olivem300, though. Here's two: www.humblebeeandme.com/luminous-summer-body-oil/ & www.humblebeeandme.com/gentle-eye-makeup-remover/.

      You can use a different emulsifier other than olivem 1000. I did it as she suggested in the substitutions and it turned out wonderful as usual.

    I don’t know if you have researched essential oils, I tend to use when ever possible Young Living essential oils, they are seed to seal. I know where they come from and how they are distilled. A person can actually go to one of the farms and work it from planting to distillation. These oils are as pure as you can get! young Living owns the different farms in the US and outside the US.

      In order for pyramid schemes company to rope you into paying 300% of normal products cost, they have to tell you something that other companies do not do or justifying their cost by telling you other competitors are unethical..... but by the end of the day you made your choice and Marie made hers.

      There is a huge, huge difference between a pyramid scheme and multi-level marketing. YL is an MLM company. Not playing devils advocate or anything like that here at all... I hate MLM companies including YL.

      I have, and I avoid MLMs at all costs. I find the business models of MLMs to be incredibly distasteful, and in the world of EOs + MLMs there tends to be a ton of potentially dangerous misinformation spread by the "independent consultants", or whatever they're calling the salespeople these days. The only essential oil companies that encourage the ingestion of EOs are MLMs, and that's a huge red flag for me, along with the overzealous marketing of them as heal-all, do-all miracle products.
      Young Living is far from the only company that is aware of its supply chain. Companies like New Directions Aromatics and Plant Therapy are also extremely diligent with their sourcing, they provide SDS and Certificates of Analysis for all their oils, batch by batch, and they manage to do it for a fraction of the cost because there aren't dozens of people taking their cut between the customer and the producer.
      Not to mention, Dr. Pappas at the Essential Oil University has found they are NOT always "as pure as you can get". A mass spec does not lie.

      So... yeah. I'd encourage you to branch out and step away from MLMs. Their products are nothing special, except for in the price department, where they are especially over priced.
