When you said the metal and plastic bobbins are NOT interchangeable, I gasped outloud. Google search loading…

I own a bunch of singers. The newest one is from 2006. None of them have numbers to guide your where to put the thread. In fact my machines have almost none of the features you mentioned as fairly common. So now I'm wondering if I need to go look at updated machines. Because why not own a 7th sewing machine? 😂 (Most of the ones I have are antique.)

How about the little lock stitch button used for starting and finishing without having to use reverse? That seems useful and better but I have never had a machine with on. On the brother machines it's a button with a circle on it.

My Kenmore ( made by Janome ) has a drop in horizontal bobbin like yours not too many differences. Mine is mechanical and yes my threads need to be snipped!😂 No biggie I’m used to it! My thread snipers are my best friend!

I bought a baby lock verve almost 2 years ago because i thought it would be easy for me having learning disabilities and as a new sewer. But am still having trouble understanding the different threads and materials to use.

What about oil for these machines? Do we need it? Where does it go?

This was your best video ever! I love your passion about all things sewing. I agree with your fondness for Brother machines. I have had the same Brother machine that I bought twenty years ago at Walmart for $100 and it is running strong! The only thing I would add to your list of "must-haves" in a sewing machine would be an automatic one-step buttonhole function. That, plus a straight stitch and a zig-zag stitch (if the machine has this feature, it can accommodate a twin needle) are all you need. All the other stitches are fluff.

I also have a brother and think your tutorial is very useful to me. I’m reading my owners manual however it can be quite confusing. Thanks for sharing

Hello Shea, I started to do upholstery has an hobby about 17 years ago using my Janome XC33, then at work I was asked can you take a pair of trousers up, shorten a dress, a prom dress, change a long sleeve shirt to a short sleeve etc. I now do more clothing alterations, soft furnishings etc than upholstery that I've had to invest in a industrial sewing machine, overlocker and just recently blind hemming machine. Ps, love your videos. 🥰🥰🥰

Excellent video, as always. For my money, I have minimized my spending for a multi-function machine (zig-zag, button hole, etc) which I use about 5% of the time, and spent where it counts for a really solid semi-industrial lockstitch machine that sees at least 95% of my use (Juki TL series). Couldn't be happier! BTW, both work exactly as you described (of course). ;)

Since you're asking, I have a Husqvarna and both the threading of the machine and for the bobbin are the same as your Brother machine. On my machine there are instead white arrows indicating where the thread goes instead of the black like you had and unfortunately they have no numbers. If you can't see the arrows on the Husqvarna because you have a vision impairment you can actually feel for them as they are protruding a bit. And at least on my machine the little lid for the bobbin placement can actually be used as a simple magnifying glass which is also pretty cool. Hope this helps!

I have a Viking Husqvarna machine number 1. She is a beast! This is probably my 5th one, they do not make these any more and you can only get used parts. I can swap from a light woven all the way to vinyl and leather at the touch of a little button. All I use is the A cassette! I took a 6 week class to learn how to use all the cassettes, but, never used them. Take that back! I used a hem stitch a time or two. The next model was the number 1 pulse with the embroidery arm and all the goodies. The man that I bought it from, new, said later, that this was a better machine. It has the pull out box , but I never use it, it has almost a well underneath the arm. It is a pin catcher/holder. All metal parts. Doesn’t jump across the table when I kick her in. Wedding gowns, pageant gowns to upholstery bits. I have no idea what I will go to after this love affair. I might just hang up my scissors. Working on a wedding gown now, if I can stay off your videos. Any tips on removing appliqués? 😭 I could just come and sit and watch you. All day.

Wow! One of the best intros for a buyer that is overwhelmed by the super hype in the selling of sewing machines. You probably didn't make many friends in the marketing department of the machine industry :) but, it all makes good sense in most people sewing only use a few stich styles. straight, and zig zag is the base, other than those is mostly novelty. Of course with variable width and length is essential. How did they do it in the old days without zig zag? no stretchy fabrics.

I learned on a Singer Featherweight summer of 1966 before starting high school. That makes me and my machine old😳🤣It’s still my favorite machine to sew on.
    Love your video’s, Thank you❤️

Hi, my old Janome and new Bernina thread very simlar to your demo. The Bernina, like my old Singer 306K are both front load bobbins with bobbin case and the very old Elna had a variation on the drop in bobbin. I do like the drop in bobbins and the clear bobbin window.

Excellent light hearted video, while I am not into sewing that much I do know how to sew and use my Omega Demin a fair amount when needed. Currently I am about to attempt to alter a new pair of Levi jeans that I purchased last week, by taking in the waist and butt area by an ince or so. The one suggestion that I thought your viewers may be interested in is if you talked about one of those universal walking feet that also has a cutter designed into it which can act like a poor mans/womans seger sewing machine.

I think you nailed it 😉. I've been too influenced by all the bells and whistles and have a few higher end machines, the truth though - I never use all those additional stitches. Thanks Shae for a really clear video. Happy sewing everyone 😊

My first machine was a singer, 29 years ago.
It served me well but singer isn’t what it used to be. I now have a husqvarna emerald 116 and I love it! I am a seamstress and work from home. I sew EVERYTHING on this! ❤
Thank you for Alton Browning sewing for me.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the reasons why things are the way they are.

Alton Brown sewing! 😂 I had to read it a second time for that light bulb to go off. 🤦🏼‍♀️ How well do you really like the Emerald? I have the Viking Husqvarna number 1. She is the best. I sew like a monster on her. I guess that I don’t think that anything will measure up to her. (Her name is Ms Pat.) I found her on Craigslist and drive to Jackson MS from north of Mobile, AL to buy her used. Mine had died. When she made all of her little noises, I almost cried. God is good, great is better!
