Thank you for this reaction. This movie gets often overlooked and is one of my favourite Carpenter movies (and soundtracks). Another great horror/thriller movie from the same year that often gets overlooked is Angel Heart with Mickey Rourke and De Niro.
My late husband and I used to watch this at least once a year, usually at Samhain. We never understood why it wasn't huge-the story is scary AF and it's got Alice Cooper! What's not to love?
23:26 I've heard it theorized that, while the sludge was indeed controlling them, this fellow, by virtue of his great faith, was able to resist it -- to the degree that he fought what it was compelling him to do, enough to end his own life...but then it just took over his corpse.
Until you get to the corpse of the guy covered in bugs, that is when it told them "Pray for death". With that, the guy singing could be treated as a taunt. "Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found" But then starts laughing. Who found him? Certainly wasn't god. And when he comes back, all he does is laugh, despite his vocals being severed. That monster can animate corpses & take control of people, and do whatever it wants with them. Even death is no obstacle. So imagine this reality: What if by bringing them back, they aren't fully gone, but forced to watch themselves do what it wants?
John Carpenter actually didn't do the music for The Thing, tho it very much sounds like it. Ennio Morricone did it, and he's most famous for the music of The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly.
I'm very happy you guys reviewed this movie. It's one of my favorites and very underrated. I always thought the concept of the plot was very unique. This is about the only movie by John Carpenter that I wouldn't mind seeing a remake or possibly a sequel. If I had to chose I would opt for a sequel but without CGI. New subscriber.
I watched this movie for the first time when it was released on VHS tape.My uncle had it back then, loved it and still do. I'm happy that younger generation's find to watch this old movie for the first time, enjoy.
The concepts in this one were so imaginative, it has served to fire my imagination for decades. The only other horror film that does that, in a similar way, is "Phantasm." I love the extra-dimensional stuff.
The Thing Prince Of Darkness In The Mouth Of Madness John Carpenter's apocalypse trilogy. The Thing is still probably the best one, but this film got under my skin unlike most movies.
17:34 I hear ya. Some movies he's been in, just in case you haven't seen them, "The Great Escape" (1963), "Fantastic Voyage" (1966), "THX 1138" (1971). He was in an old Outer Limits first season episode "The Man With the Power" and really good in that one. There are three other apocalyptic type Carpenter films of the '80s to consider if either of you haven't seen them yet, Escape From New York (81), The Thing (82) and They Live (88). ✌😎
Alice Cooper! The bad homeless guy, saw him in concert 78 awesome show he had electric chair onstage them fun rock and roll shows good times thanks again always a good time here
Love this movie! Sure, there are some familiar elements like zombies and being trapped in a location, but it's also a true original story wise, with the combination of quantum physics, Satan, mirror images, conspiracy, antigod stuff. They don't make them like this anymore, and even back then, it was considered a slow burn. But that's part of the appeal. The atmosphere and the setup are great, and the payoff, given the limited budget, delivers.
This was sort of blown off by too many. Should have been continued. It's very strong at the end. The mirror/Donnie Darko. Like "Thing", it ended with a "what's next?" but the power of "Darkness" in this seemed to be one of the strongest, and still existing. Just has to find a way from their area (galaxy, universe, hell, afterlife non-solar system, or is this how they/it, has always been?) to earth or wherever they want to take control of and destroy
Like I say in the video I really wouldn’t be mad if they remade this (with care) because the story is so rich I can see a lot could be done with this nowadays in the right hands.
@@CinemaSauced Yeah, it really seems to have the powerful source of evil, worse than Dormammu. They got lucky just blocking his portal once. What's next? haha
You should react to “The Return of the Living Dead” (1985). Many react channels have yet to discover this film despite it being considered by many to be the best zombie movie ever made.
Great movie. I think, at the end, they stopped nothing. Brian was the first one, who had the whole dream. In my opinion, that means, that they have contributed to the fact, that the anti-god will come after all.
When the movie was released over here, I was an apprentice so money was short and spending had to be well planned and organized, so I had to choose between this and Evil Dead 2 to watch at the theatre and wait for the other one to be released on home video. I chose to watch Evil Dead 2 and that is one of the few regrets I have in my life. Don't get me wrong, it was fun and it's a good movie but Prince of Darkness would have been the better experience on the big screen. I love the score! Not sure about a possible remake, I'm not against remakes in general but I guess, I like the original a little too much to appreciate a new version. Plus, The Fog (2005) is the worst remake I've ever seen up to this date, so... One year later, a kind of similar topic (religion, apocalypse, good vs. evil) was shown in The Seventh Sign, which is not horror but a mystical thriller. Sadly, it is almost forgotten nowadays, despite the prominent cast: Demi Moore, Michael Biehn & Jürgen Prochnow.
It isn't satan more so as it is the mirror image of God of the dark side of reality, as they call it Anti-God. The destructor, the creator of darkness. Satan is its son, which is that ooze. Its job was to find a host to become of a physical form, and bring Anti-God back to this reality to conquer it. It is sci-fi meets religion, very well done too. This is such an underrated Carpenter film, one of his best soundtracks and the atmosphere of dread is unlike most horror films I've ever seen. The dream transmissions scene gave me nightmares as a 24 year old, movies haven't done that to me since I was a preteen, and no 1 film I've seen since has had this effect on me.
Of John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy" I think The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness are better, but I've always found this film the most terrifying. The curious mix of religion and science gives an interesting flavour to the story. Ah, yes... the green liquid is Satan a.k.a. the titular Prince of Darkness. The entity he tries to bring into our reality at the end is the Anti-God.
We are doin GREAT! Had some positive life changes which put a halt on filming any reactions but we are piling up the movies (new ones too) to react to. 🤟
I'm sure you've gotten feedback and grief about this before (based on your guilty vibe when you broke out the treats here ebfore the movie started rolling) but I have to say: if it's a first time viewing, then popcorn is going to drown out a portion of the audio for you. The snack is noisy inside the head. And it's annoying to some of your audience here, that endless crunching that we can here very clearly. I understand that popcorn and movies go together 100% and it's a truly American thing, but for a reaction video first time experience I'd urge anyone to leave the snacks for another time/flick. Plus, I've watched many reaction videos on YT and you're the only ones who munch throughout the film. Just some (junk) food for thought. This is an interesting movie in what it delves into, and I enjoy the score and mood. But overall this is a failure. It feels like it has an identity crisis; does it want to be a thoughtful and creepy scifi tale, or merely a ghastly shocker?
Thank you for this reaction. This movie gets often overlooked and is one of my favourite Carpenter movies (and soundtracks).

The "unsung hero" of John Carpenter films! Thank you for the reaction

I can believe that which is why it made him cut his throat in order to shut him up as he was resisting by singing.🧐

Starman was wonderful! I'm so amazed nobody reacts to that one.

Agree 100%
@@CinemaSauced Funfact: Alice Cooper (the singer) is featured in this movie as one of the homeless people.
@@restymervinponio4026 yeah he is the bicycle killer ahaha
I remember seeing this years ago, after finally overcoming my fear of mirrors…Mirrors with Keifer Sutherland came out :P
Thanks guys. I was having trouble sleeping but you two human Tylenol PM's put me right in dreamland.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
The scariest Carpenter's movie for me. A masterpiece!
One of the best written IMO. You can tell he was writing about what truly fascinated him.
@@CinemaSauced I agree! How to scare with intelligence
Love how you two are taking a deeper dive into the genre than most

In the Mouth Of Madness. Finish the Apocalypse Trilogy!
Today's my birthday!! This makes it even better!
Happy Birthday!! 🎊🎉
happy birthday! 🎈🎈🎈

I barely remember anything from watching Phantasm other than the tall man; maybe we’ll do that one soon. 🤘
@@CinemaSauced Good thinking. The first raised a whole bunch of questions...and then the next several installments slowy answer them.
BOYYYYYYYY
John Carpenter was talking about making this into a short series for streaming back in 2019 i think, but it obviously never gone anywhere.
The snacking is fine. What I find objectionable is that neither of you seemed to recognise Alice Cooper.
One of my favorite horror movies from my teenager years. I really loved this movie back in the days - I still like it a lot. Great reaction, cheers!
The Thing
Prince Of Darkness
In The Mouth Of Madness

IMO they couldn’t ever stop it. Once the “box was opened” (the sludge was released) its already out in existence. No turning back.
POD is Gilligan's Island in a church.

I think this film, if remade, would lend itself well to a short series.
There was talk of that, John Carpenter producing but it never came about.

Please. No more remakes of classic movies. Intelligence is all but forgotten when it comes to today's screen plays.
I feel like I’m the right hands it could definitely work. Mike Flanagan needs to do it.
