Tahir Sahib I have lived in Iran during Shah's time and it was called Paris of Middle East. Iranian society was pretty forward looking, open and highly civilised. I left Iran when Khomeni got in and could see the difference between radical and forward looking toughts. We Indians were highly loved and respected in Iran. Me being Punjabi found so much in common with Persians in language and food habits.

My maternal uncle worked as an engineer 50 years ago. He used to say the quality of food and living is on par with the European countries.
If so many Iranians are so forward looking, then how they come under Islami rule? Those who rules aren't they not Iranians?

Iranians have been been historically confused whether they are Persians first or Muslims first. Iran was a world power under Zoarostrian empire which has deep cultural imprints in the society. Iranians still celebrate Navroz & follow sun-synchronized Persian Jamshidi calendar.
Their modern Monarch, the last Shah used to call himself Shahenshah Aryamehar Mohammed Raza Pahalvi declaring Iranians to be Persians first & Muslims later. He made Islam subservient to Persian heritage of art, culture, dance & music while keeping Ashura & Moharram as low key private affairs. Persian poets like Hafez, Shirazi & Ferdowsi were given national place .
Islamic Revolution overthrew monarchy in 1979 with Khomeini declaring supremacy of Islam superseding everything. Shah's army officers above the colonel rank were either killed, dismissed or ran away. Poets, singers, musicians, dancers & literally figures which were integral part of Shah’s Persian culture were also either killed or they ran away. However, Zoarostrian imprints could not be erased even though Navroz holidays were curtailed & Ashura became State function.
Khomeini raised an army of "Pasdaars" or Islamic Republic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC). Saddam’s war (1981-88) helped armed forces maintain superiority with control of heavier weapons. After that IRGC took control of heavy weapons, developed naval & air wings making regular forces subservient to IRGC & moral police was raised to enforce Islamic code like Hijab.
Earlier, Islam was generally divided into Islam-e-Arab (Arabic Islam) & Islam-e-Ajam (Non-Arabic Islam) but after Iranian Revolution which established hegemony of Shia faith, Middle east has been divided into Shia & Sunni crescents with incorporation of Shia Arabs into Shia crescent. Revolutionary guards (IRGC) who are brainwashed & indoctrinated in their religious beliefs make regime change extremely difficult. Unfortunate people of Iran are in for a long haul.
In 7th century, Caliphate destroyed the prosperous and culturally rich Zoroastrians of Persia in the name of Islam. Then came anti-people and fanatic Mulla regime in 1979 which destroyed a flourishing state of Iran and the Islamic world celebrated the peril! Trying level best to understand what these two major disruptions brought to the great people of Persia/Iran.
I have interacted with Iranians in US for many years. They are nothing like what current regime in Iran is. Iranians I met in US were modern, open minded and wonderful people. Same experience as yours Tahir sahab

It was President Carter who brought Khomeni and backed off in helping Shah. Trust me, North Americans got no idea or knowledge of our part of world. Carter kicked Shah out in name of Human rights.

Iranians r proud of the fact that, the use Farsi instead of Arabic , their only solace. Navroz which is pre Islamic event is celebrated, a way to show that they didn't suddenly appear from Mars. It has been around a decade Iranians r turning towards atheism n a growing percentage towards Zoorastrianism their previous religion.
