A bass drum won't provide ultra low as a speaker enclosure. For that you need a dedicated box and ports calculated in length and volume to tune the enclosure low so that the speaker doesn't just flap back and forth and bottom out. I do think a speaker in a bass drum would be fun to experiment with for different kick drum sounds. If you connected a resistor across the speaker terminals, you could experiment with different cone damping from a wire (high damping) to open circuit (low damping)

First, it's great that you are playing around but as someone who has designed and built many subwoofers, so many thoughts came to mind, and I hope some of these can be helpful. The enclosure of that drum is way, way, way too small for a speaker that size. You do not want the back of the speaker to be loose and flabby like the drum back. You want all walls of the speaker to be as rigid as reasonably possible. This is so that the speaker enclosure does not make sounds on its own, coloring the sound. If you wanted it to contribute constructively to the output of the speaker, you need it to be much heavier so that it will resonate at a much lower frequency (passive radiator). A passive radiator also should be larger than the speaker itself and/or capable of more excursion. Another issue is the giant hole in the back. The tuning frequency is so high that it is useless for any purpose of a subwoofer. The reason you did not hear anything was because your system was not capable of producing that frequency. Honestly, if you really wanted that subwoofer to reproduce infrasonics, you need to put it in at least a 15 cubic foot enclosure and tune the port or passive radiator to something like 15Hz. But that subwoofer that you have is not really a good model to use for this purpose. What you need is a subwoofer that is capable of moving far more air, something like a Dayton Ultimax. Also, you don't need earplugs for what you had but it's good to be safety-minded.
Try it before you knock it. I've got a phd but you don't hear me presenting on the back of my 20+ years of innovation... Just sharing (honestly) the real experiment and experience.

@@morganrau You may have a PHD but probably not to do with acoustics or anything related to whats going on (not knocking but just saying). So you do not want the enclosure itself to be imparting its own sound. The driver should be the sound source only. As Content Updating mentioned, you want a strong rigid enclosure that will not flex. Also without doing measurements of the driver and just placing it in an air space, you'd have no idea what is actually happening. Best thing would be to buy something like the Dayton WT3 woofer tester, test the woofer and model the enclosure for the driver to get the desired output.

i think the round basedrum makes the walls of it pretty sturdy , i do wonder if the speaker becomes more efficient if you where to mount a sollid wall on the back of it instead of the drumskin
Dude, I'm pretty sure that the heads on that kick drum were creating destructive interference with the subwoofer. Typically, people looking for HUGE bass spring for either a ported box or a chambered box. Also, I doubt that wire was 8 gauge. It looked like 10 or 12 gauge to me. I also wouldn't trust Pyle products to deliver any sort real performance. Also, low frequencies tend to be very penetrating. I don't think your hearing protection was doing a whole lot for you.

Just SubBass doesn't do hearing damage to my knowledge even with SPL levels in 150db+ range. It's mostly just pressure, but if the pressure bothers ear drums I suppose ear plugs help a little.

No basic about it I'm afraid. You need the vibrations, reverberations, and undulations to reach the level of the body fluid system to experience the effects.

But in this case, it doesn't have enough mass to resonate at a frequency low enough to be beneficial. In fact, the sound emanating from the skin is destructively canceling the bass from the speaker.

You can't even experience the "body irritating feeling" for lack of a better description, that result from the canon I've made, unless you stand at very strategic locations in the a lab (so as to encounter the harmonic resonance moment in the space..). And in your body.
Morgan - what you have made is a dipole bass system. The drum diaphragms are not required. If you take them off the system should perform better - less colouration because the drum skins have a resonance which will give a peak at one frequency where as you should be working on the resonant frequency of the speaker itself. Using the drum itself is a good idea. You will find the bass being dipole will be more directional. Try to get a frequency response test done with the skins and without the skins and publish it.
It would be interesting to see how it performs as a bass drum "subkick". Wire I mic cord to it, plug into a mixer board, place the bassdrum with the speaker on it directly in front of a regular bassdrum with the face of the speaker facing the front head
Morgan Rauscher You'll want to also mic the kick drum from the inside (not the one with the speaker in it) and combine the two signals (separate channels on your mixer board). I made a subkick out of a 10" tom & a 6.5" Kicker sub. It sounds great when combining with a regular miked up kick drum

For generate infrasonic sound need 2 sub speaker in one case 1/4 wave resonator. One channel of amplifer for first and one channel for second dynamic and need special soft for make binaural sound. I have Mac Audio IceFire 225 and make experiment with my guitar and with Ableton and programm synthesizer - emulation analog KORG synthesizers, I make resonance and I hear very amazing effects. You said you hear "nothing" at the low frequency yet I hear a pulsing sound, so which is it, nothing or a pulsing sound? A square, triangle, ramp or pulse wave with a fundamental in the infrasound range still has a great deal of harmonic energy in the audio range which we hear as a tempo which has the same frequency as the fundamental, so we detect frequency in the infrasound range indirectly using the tempos formed by the beating of the higher harmonics of a wave, the tempo we hear matches the fundamental frequency that we don't hear. please share links or more info about these magical subwoofers that do 6" peak to peak at 15hz or play 1-20hz like a boss! No such thing as a subwoofer doing such things, perhaps a rotatory driver in a 25cuft enclosure.
Pardon my ignorance but are earplugs needed at this low frequencies and SPL? also are they effective? I remember reading some time ago that the damage threshold for hearing goes significantly up with lower frequencies but i might be remembering wrong or might be misinformation.
What you hear at 15hz is your speaker flapping and distorting, you hear the paper cone being warped and stressed, a bit of air, you hear all kinds of “noises” at 15hz, but I promise you what you DONT hear is a distinctive 15hz sine wave, because you are human and your ears weren’t designed to hear below 20hz.

Lowest sound humans can hear is somewhere between 12 and 20 Hz. 12Hz can be percieved under lab conditions. Lowest note on 32ft organ stop is 16.35Hz C0. B-1 is around 15Hz, an octave below 5 string bass. I can hear 16Hz, but I cannot hear anything above 15kHz. Sound is divided into not many areas. Infrasound is anything below 16Hz, it can be percieved by humans, but is not hearable, elephants and whales use it for comunication as it travels verry far distance easily. Earthquakes and fundamental tones of heavy engines are found there. Next one is sub bass and lowest sounds humans can hear as musical tones are there. Lowest tones produced by musical instruments are there, this is area that spans from 20Hz to 80Hz. Bass spans from 80 to 200Hz. Low mids from 200 to 800, high mids from 800 to 4k, presence range goes from 2k to 6k, treble from 6k to 12k, and air is everything above 13k going to 22k, above 20k or 22k is ultrasound.
The problem is, even if you loosen the head all the way, it wouldn't even resonate anywhere near low enough to be of any use, and you have to plug the hole too.
Sorry, but you know nothing about speakers, how they work, frequency responses and requirements, power requirements for the speakers, how bass porting and enclosure design works to funnel the bass and 'compress' the air more to create more bass... (oh, and yes, it's bass, not base.... that's something else entirely :) )
Hate to tell you but I agree with Colin. According to WinISD this driver's optimum ported enclosure is a 12.807 cubic foot box tuned to 27.51hz. Even then this driver's -3dB point is 29.68 hz.....nowhere near what is considered infrasonic. That is a 14x22 kickdrum it looks like...maybe 3 cubic feet without driver displacement. Assuming that is a 6" port maybe 4" long that "box" is tuned to about 55hz resulting in a 5db peak around 87 hz and a -3dB cutoff at 57hz. Even adding the movement of the drumhead....getting infrasonic at any reasonable sound level is doubtful. Yes...I have been building Sub enclosures for many years.....
Morgan Rauscher easy build the box to the correct specs even though it will be down probably 9-12db or more at 20hz I bet it far exceeded the output of what you made.
Honestly this a very interesting video. I would have like to have seen better products used, as they would have most likely greatly enhanced what you were attempting. Also i must ask why the hearing protection?
The designer could achieve more success using the longest pipes from the body of the organ from the local church. Or it is better to use Timpani from a large symphonic orchestra, they are closer to his beloved infrasonic. But it was necessary to start with acoustics textbooks.
You can use a subwoofer with the magnet spiders and coils removed just using the basket and cone which is the same thing Klipsch does with their reference series house subwoofers. Another cool idea would be using a whole intact subwoofer as a passive radiator but use the terminal leads as a device to recapture some of the energy and feed it back to the battery bank or capacitors. I wasn't meaning to come off as a dick though and sorry if it sounded as such.
There's also another project that some sound engineers use to mic kick drum which uses a 6 or 8 inch component or woofer as a microphone for the kick drum mounting it closely to the port.

Going with the flow is wonderful, however, this could have been so much more than what it is. i honestly suggest you try again but this time follow some hints from some fellow users and show your work, its not hard to measure the area of a cylinder and work out resonance nor is it hard to plot a response graph.

30 hz is not that low a normal Bluetooth speaker can reproduce 30, and hearing protection for 70hz and under is not really needed. People sit in 165db vehicles at 30hz and there hearing is not affected.

You should calculate how much volume that subwoofer requires, then make a proper enclosure for that volume. That's how you can reach lower frequencies ☺️
For some reason after sealing both of my subwoofer boxes im getting frequency responses down to 8hz and getting massive door flex at 15hz wonder why sealing my ported boxes improve the efficiency with the low bass and the subsonics
the reason why is below the port tuning the sub becomes unloaded as any sound pressure that would be created by the sub is relieved through the port, since the box is sealed the sound pressure isn't being released, so it can produce infrasonics a bit better, i'm guessing it's quieter when sealed at higher frequencies though. Ported boxes have a sharper roll-off than sealed, though are more efficient, and can allow better low extension.

The build video turned out really great. Interesting idea to build an infrasonic sub! I like the design because it's very unique. Unfortunately what you're trying to do here is a bit like building a car that's going more than 250mph from e.g. a Honda Civic by putting a truck engine in it. An infrasonic sub is a good topic for my DIY Subwoofer Build series. Here are some problems which you might have had: a bass drum is an instrument. Every part of an Instrument produces sounds. A speaker should reproduce sounds instead of creating them. A driver produces no sound below its resonant frequency. By putting it into an enclosure the resonant frequency even rises. (There is the concept of URPS, Under Resonance Principle Subwoofers, but that needs a very powerful amplifier, 1000+ watts.) The bigger the cone area the bigger the enclosure volume needed for lower frequencies. The box needs to be at least as big as the Compliance Equivalent Volume (Vas) of the driver. (If it's the Pyle PDW21250 then 25 cubic feet.) If you put the drum heads back on you have a band pass enclosure which takes some effort to calculate correctly to get a suitable result. Professional drivers are designed for loud volumes not for low bass. Possible solution: open baffle with powerful amplifier and an active subwoofer crossover. @@JoshuasRecordings Unfortunately no not repeatable via headphones because the diameter of the woofer speaker needs to be very large to get the natural reverberations, as opposed to simulating the reverberations via some sound en/decoder and tricks of the mind ;)
@@morganrau The majority of headphones play down to around 15 Hz. This is because the drivers are so close to your ears. All you had to do is record your "invention" with any halfway decent microphone and it would come through just fine on almost all headphones.

You would get more Bass putting it into the right size cabinet, this isnt infrasound. The only true infrasound device at the moment is the rotary subwoofer.
Morgan Rauscher: Yes incredibly difficult; the trick is to push large volumes of air at high accelerations, apparently a 30cm rotary sub can shake houses a couple of miles away.
@@suzesiviter6083 SVS, JTR, Rhythmik and others produce subwoofers that produce useful levels of infrasound :) My system can produce 16Hz at 121 dB measured ground plane 2meter RMS.

Crappy ass SVC 21" Pyle trash. Sundown, Crecendo audio, DC audio, PSI, SMD, Rockford fosgate, Alpine, Kenwood. anything above would kill this in a matter of seconds. this box is illogical because your only running with a max of something around 3.0 cu. ft^ MAX and your port is so wide open and theres absolutely 0 lenght on it it's just a leaky hole. you also have your leads going through 2 holes in the box which can cause distortion and can fuck with the tuning of the box making distortion or other things like box rise or resisitance changes. and as for hearing protection? I'm sorry but even if you had this in the proper box it needs you'd never ever be able to hit a high enough decibel to actaully damage your ear drums 85 DB at prolonged usages could cause somewhat hearing loss and I highly highly DOUBT this sub ever got near 85DB in that drum.

Morgan - what you have made is a dipole bass system. The drum diaphragms are not required. If you take them off the system should perform better - less colouration because the drum skins have a resonance which will give a peak at one frequency where as you should be working on the resonant frequency of the speaker itself. Using the drum itself is a good idea. You will find the bass being dipole will be more directional. Try to get a frequency response test done with the skins and without the skins and publish it.

The sub audible would be an artifact(a type of distortion) since you're just inducing the head's resonance using a woofer.

You'll want to also mic the kick drum from the inside (not the one with the speaker in it) and combine the two signals (separate channels on your mixer board). I made a subkick out of a 10" tom & a 6.5" Kicker sub. It sounds great when combining with a regular miked up kick drum

For generate infrasonic sound need 2 sub speaker in one case 1/4 wave resonator. One channel of amplifer for first and one channel for second dynamic and need special soft for make binaural sound. I have Mac Audio IceFire 225 and make experiment with my guitar and with Ableton and programm synthesizer - emulation analog KORG synthesizers, I make resonance and I hear very amazing effects. A square, triangle, ramp or pulse wave with a fundamental in the infrasound range still has a great deal of harmonic energy in the audio range which we hear as a tempo which has the same frequency as the fundamental, so we detect frequency in the infrasound range indirectly using the tempos formed by the beating of the higher harmonics of a wave, the tempo we hear matches the fundamental frequency that we don't hear.

What you hear at 15hz is your speaker flapping and distorting, you hear the paper cone being warped and stressed, a bit of air, you hear all kinds of “noises” at 15hz, but I promise you what you DONT hear is a distinctive 15hz sine wave, because you are human and your ears weren’t designed to hear below 20hz.

Lowest tones produced by musical instruments are there, this is area that spans from 20Hz to 80Hz. Bass spans from 80 to 200Hz. Low mids from 200 to 800, high mids from 800 to 4k, presence range goes from 2k to 6k, treble from 6k to 12k, and air is everything above 13k going to 22k, above 20k or 22k is ultrasound.

Hate to tell you but I agree with Colin. According to WinISD this driver's optimum ported enclosure is a 12.807 cubic foot box tuned to 27.51hz. Even then this driver's -3dB point is 29.68 hz.....nowhere near what is considered infrasonic. That is a 14x22 kickdrum it looks like...maybe 3 cubic feet without driver displacement. Assuming that is a 6" port maybe 4" long that "box" is tuned to about 55hz resulting in a 5db peak around 87 hz and a -3dB cutoff at 57hz. Even adding the movement of the drumhead....getting infrasonic at any reasonable sound level is doubtful. Yes...I have been building Sub enclosures for many years.....

You can use a subwoofer with the magnet spiders and coils removed just using the basket and cone which is the same thing Klipsch does with their reference series house subwoofers. Another cool idea would be using a whole intact subwoofer as a passive radiator but use the terminal leads as a device to recapture some of the energy and feed it back to the battery bank or capacitors. I wasn't meaning to come off as a dick though and sorry if it sounded as such.
There's also another project that some sound engineers use to mic kick drum which uses a 6 or 8 inch component or woofer as a microphone for the kick drum mounting it closely to the port.

30 hz is not that low a normal Bluetooth speaker can reproduce 30, and hearing protection for 70hz and under is not really needed. People sit in 165db vehicles at 30hz and there hearing is not affected.

For some reason after sealing both of my subwoofer boxes im getting frequency responses down to 8hz and getting massive door flex at 15hz wonder why sealing my ported boxes improve the efficiency with the low bass and the subsonics
the reason why is below the port tuning the sub becomes unloaded as any sound pressure that would be created by the sub is relieved through the port, since the box is sealed the sound pressure isn't being released, so it can produce infrasonics a bit better, i'm guessing it's quieter when sealed at higher frequencies though. Ported boxes have a sharper roll-off than sealed, though are more efficient, and can allow better low extension.

a sealed box drops 12 db per octave. cabin gain is plus 12db per octave below room tuning .
The build video turned out really great. Interesting idea to build an infrasonic sub! I like the design because it's very unique. Unfortunately what you're trying to do here is a bit like building a car that's going more than 250mph from e.g. a Honda Civic by putting a truck engine in it.

Here are some problems which you might have had: a bass drum is an instrument. Every part of an Instrument produces sounds. A speaker should reproduce sounds instead of creating them. A driver produces no sound below its resonant frequency. By putting it into an enclosure the resonant frequency even rises. (There is the concept of URPS, Under Resonance Principle Subwoofers, but that needs a very powerful amplifier, 1000+ watts.) The bigger the cone area the bigger the enclosure volume needed for lower frequencies. The box needs to be at least as big as the Compliance Equivalent Volume (Vas) of the driver. (If it's the Pyle PDW21250 then 25 cubic feet.) If you put the drum heads back on you have a band pass enclosure which takes some effort to calculate correctly to get a suitable result. Professional drivers are designed for loud volumes not for low bass.
Possible solution: open baffle with powerful amplifier and an active subwoofer crossover. An open baffle lowers the resonant frequency but produces a loud peak in the midbass area.

@@morganrau The majority of headphones play down to around 15 Hz. This is because the drivers are so close to your ears. All you had to do is record your "invention" with any halfway decent microphone and it would come through just fine on almost all headphones.

Crappy ass SVC 21" Pyle trash. Sundown, Crecendo audio, DC audio, PSI, SMD, Rockford fosgate, Alpine, Kenwood. anything above would kill this in a matter of seconds. this box is illogical because your only running with a max of something around 3.0 cu. ft^ MAX and your port is so wide open and theres absolutely 0 lenght on it it's just a leaky hole. you also have your leads going through 2 holes in the box which can cause distortion and can fuck with the tuning of the box making distortion or other things like box rise or resisitance changes. and as for hearing protection? I'm sorry but even if you had this in the proper box it needs you'd never ever be able to hit a high enough decibel to actaully damage your ear drums 85 DB at prolonged usages could cause somewhat hearing loss and I highly highly DOUBT this sub ever got near 85DB in that drum.
