I'm not even a hobbyist, but I like to understand what people are talking about, and I like to understand things like this. I appreciated very much the impedance matching description, totally get it. I also really liked the illustration of constructive and destructive interference of sound waves. I had a gentleman probably 20 years ago draw a very similar diagram explaining to me how noise cancellation worked. It was brand new back then.
This is fascinating. I thought LRAD was this extremely complex system with computers and special materials. This reminds me of an "ultrasonic gun" my father built with a very small horn speaker a little transistor amplifier, and a high-frequency oscillator. He mounted all of it in a plastic pitcher, like you'd use for juice or lemonade, but with a lid. He mounted the horn to the lid, attached the circuitry to plastic rails he glued into it, added what at the time was a large power pack with C-cell batteries, and filled the rest of the empty space in the thing with insulation to damp the sound coming back at the user. The frequency was pretty high -- I could just hear the bottom edge of it, but all he perceived from it was a beam of pain. It worked like gangbusters on stray or feral dogs, some of which ran in small packs in our neighborhood. He'd wave this thing at them and they'd run the other way, howling.
About 15-18 years ago, a guy invented a device that would "beam" sound into your head. You'd hear it, but a person right next to you wouldn't. It was designed for focused communication -- the inventor's example was a "shelf talker" device in a supermarket or department store, that would emit a beam of sound that generally would not be heard, but if you intersected it, a short message about that particular product was "spoken" into your head. There was some other talk about it, and I wish I could remember the name of the company the guy started. I was tempted to put some money into stock from that company for my 401K, but I'm not very knowledgeable about stocks, so I dithered on the subject. By the time I'd decided to do it, the company had pretty much vanished, POOF! Turns out they were acquired by a government contractor with military contracts through the DoD under DARPA. A few years later, LRAD popped up on the radar.
Seeing that these devices aren't terribly complicated or expensive, I'm seriously considering mounting a couple on my house's roof, to keep unwanted visitors in large groups from getting too close to my house. It would also give me the ability to talk to them without using phones to call or text back and forth. Add some hefty stepper motors and a gear train, and you could aim the thing remotely. Add a goodly-sized LiFePO4 battery pack, a BMS and a small solar panel, and it could easily operate even if power was cut.
Per the Non-Aggression Principle, it would of course only be deployed where violence had already been offered, to defend against such violence. I like the idea of being able to back up a request that such persons leave my property with an effective deterrent.

@@GodofLovers no, definitely a bad thing. The entire world seems to be going to shit, everyone hates each other and our evil media perpetuates it. You have people losing their livelihood and rightfully angry about it and others telling them to just stay home and trust the very government that only makes things worse when they try to "fix" things. Getting excited about science is a good thing, but it's sad when that happens to be the highlight of your day.
Another potentially dry topic, made extremely interesting and informative... wonderful demonstration, yet again.

Having once taken apart a megaphone similar to the Pyle megaphone you showed at 17:00 the driver is actually in the back of the horn. It's folded twice, with an inner 1st horn hidden underneath the 2nd horn, which is then reflected out to the primary horn.
I mounted a 1/4" tube fitting to the end of the megaphone driver I disassembled and turned it into a very effective talkbox.
This guy has to be one of the most knowledgeable guys in the world over a huge variety of subjects. I wish I had 20% of the knowledge this guy has.

The irony is I've been wanting one of these. Figured it would be good for defending against predators during camping by having it mounted to a truck. Seems cleaner and more efficient than alternatives. Plus it can scream for help if needed.

You continue to amaze me with the plethora of knowledge that you have. Not just general knowledge, but detailed technical knowledge. And you have a way of explaining it that makes it easy for us common folk to understand. I know there's been some speculation on what your career might be, and you almost denied one profession that I am aware of. But to think you would not be involved in higher education in some form or fashion is a stretch. You are so comfortable explaining things, and doing so without a cue card or anything. You're also able to nail segways and move through the important points you want to cover, again without cue cards or notes. I continued to be amazed and I love this channel. I have told numerous people about it and made some of them watch all or part of one of your videos (whether they wanted to or not). Please keep publishing the videos, this is one area of my life that continues to challenge and exercise my brain, and I love it!!! Thank you for all you do, I know the time spent preproduction and postproduction for a video is about 10-15 times longer than the video, so I know its a lot of work. Tech Ingredients, simply one of the best channels on UA-cam. On this one, I found the physics of wave reinforcement and sweeping frequencies to form continuously variable peaks fascinating. The reverse shield to focus reflected LRAD emissions back to the source was also very cool!

As a sound engineer, this brought me back to my class decades ago. Its interesting to me as I'm aware of LRAD briefly, never knew its horn inside.

Thank you so much for making physics understandable and even fun! Sonics and acoustics are of interest to me as a musician. I just did an experiment where I found that playing a sine wave at 1000 Hz was different than a chirp from 400 Hz to 2000 Hz. I noticed it was louder towards the high end. In fact, to me here, 1900 Hz is louder than 2000 Hz, by a noticeable amount. I haven't liked learning this much since I discovered the work of Julius Sumner Miller.

Are you referring to the plastic plates that were sent out by the hundreds in the 50s-60's with the note reading " Please destroy me" (or something to that effect) as part of a marketing stunt to show off the Co's super tought plastic? My late father used to tell us stories of said event, but I've never been able to hunt down the company. :(

He's been making videos covering many different areas of scientific interest for quite a few years. He's considered ,by many, to be a prominent authority on graphene and graphetized carbons & has quite an impressive list of academic and professional credentials. (He's just very down to earth & doesn't like to brag about his accomplishments, but they are certainly there and verifiable , should one care to check.) If you appreciate Tech Ingredient's ch. I'm sure you'll find some of Rob's work interesting. They have different presentation styles and personalities, but they are both brilliant in their own ways! Hope this helps.

How does that work? Is it inner ear inter-modulation? I.e. it relies on the distortion generated by the ear itself to produce audible sound?

I've wondered about the health effects of ultra sonic frequencies at very high SPL. Is there research thay suggests it's okay? We don't sense xray or pure UV but they can be damaging.
@jdh7803 Can you provide some reference for this sonic weapon? It seems unlikely to me, because helicopter blades produce a very strong low frequency signal about 6hz. People do not die, although some buildings have structural failure.
Excellent explanation of sound properties and speakers. LRAD started in the same building with the company I was working for in early 2000 in San Diego. We were developing sonar systems for Navy and they were developing speaker systems when they came upon the technology which I believe was developed by either a college professor or a small company. There were other players developing the technology but LRAD obviously did a better job of marketing their technology.
Utterly priceless education from the roots all the way to the blossoms. Epic generosity and enthusiasm!
One minor note about phased arrays and why you wouldn't want one for an LRAD is that when you try to steer a beam off of the normal to the plane, you get an angular dependence. Since the LRAD uses a chirp, this would result in a sweep of the beam if you tried to steer it electronically. This is my favorite youtube channel and by far the most informative/educational. Thank you for all of your effort.

It'd be interesting to make an interference map with a depth camera and remote mic. Then you could make one for each frequency and have a computer calculate the best frequency based on the person position relative to the LRAD. Then move to multiple targets with oscillating frequencies. Might be a good collaboration with Stuff Made Here.

In 1990 I put together a Kicker sub with two upward firing 2x6 cone tweeters and didn’t understand why they would drive me out of the cab of my pick up truck. Its very situational. But it is very universally the local governers job to address the protesters, not the polices.

If ya did it to stop actual harm being done; you will likely get out without charges... so long as you did not commit arson, get someone unalived, or do so with malicious intent.
But you might have to wait for politics to return if authoritarianism has taken over, such as weve seen happen in many US states.

We just installed some ultrasonic sealing machines out on our factory floor. When they're active, you can literally _feel_ the sound like glass shards scraping across your skull and you can sense the diffraction patterns through the safety fences felt as ripples as you walk around.

I have been building many speaker systems during the past 45 years. Applied (what I hope) proper design rules. But this is the first time I have seen a proper explanation of what actually impedance matching is for a driver. Most if not all technical articles copy the same phrases from other articles, apparently without a fundamental understanding by the author. Thank you.

Actually ohmage is very technically correct. For example a resistor behaves quiet different from an incandescent light, or motor or transformer. Usually anything with a power factor of 1 is the same as a resistor.

Fun to try: If you take a line of closely spaced transducers and begin to curve that line around a central axis, with the speakers still facing forward, you will eventually make a ring of transducers. The transducers need to be small enough that their center spacing is 1/3 of a wavelength at the highest frequency to be reproduced. The ring diameter also needs to be larger than 1/2 wavelength at the lowest frequency to be reproduced. This structure will create the complex lobing behavior of a line array, but it will be created in both vertical and horizontal axes; the number of sources will create a complex enough interference pattern that lobing off axis will be greatly attenuated. Now, instead of the individual speakers, imagine that the ring becomes the diffraction slot of a constant directivity horn, with the horn flare after the diffraction slot bent around the axis of the whole structure. Then a single compression driver could be mounted near the center, with the horn expanding out through 360 degrees toward the slot. This would be a structure similar to the horn of the Federal Signal 508 siren. This would be a horn that could produce a very narrow pattern on-axis, with the off-axis energy being mostly attenuated by self-interference. The reason a diffraction slot would be used where the horn bends forward is because the horn would need to reproduce high frequencies as well, so the horn path would need to be kept narrow enough that high-frequency energy in the horn is not internally reflected or reduced by self-interference inside the horn path.

Back in the 90's I had two Orion 12 inch sub woofers with Kevlar speaker cones hooked up to a Sherwood amp running at 500 watts RMS per channel into a custom sealed enclosure. All this was mounted in the back of my Dodge Shadow with the back deck plate removed and up firing to reflect off the back window. You could hear me coming before you would see me. Ahh the memories, and the hearing loss I'm stuck with today! Orion made some amazing high quality stuff back then. Their Gold series amps were expensive and very high quality back then too. I had forgotten all about them until now.

Love it! You are one helluva communicator! My kid used to love her science classes -- then she moved on to a teacher who hardly involved the class in labs, and she grew weary of science.
