  • I tested the new Swarovski NL Pure 8x42 binoculars and give my honest thoughts and review. I borrowed the binoculars from a friend and was not compensated for this review (although, we did add Amazon affiliate links below a year and a half after this video was originally published).

    I ended up buying the NL Pure in the 8X42 because of the FOV. It is so overwhelming large, you become emersed in the sharp image. You can hold these binoculars steady and just scan things in the large FOV with your eyes.
    Nice review and solid comments, thanks

    Great recommendation, in my point of view, i will definetly choose nl pure 8x42 cause wider field of view. NL 8x42 is currently the second best binoculars in terms of 8 power, obviously, the best one is the Nikon WX 7x50 or WX10x50.

    I got a Swarovski NL Pure 8x42 half a year ago. The flat sharp image, and the combination of very wide field of view and still good eye relief is excellent!
    And the head rest definitely helps to stabilize the image.
    But there is a noticeable amount of glare when aiming against bright light. The focuser feels undistinct and now and then has a play. There are a lot of other testamonies about similar problem with the focuser.
    These two factors detract from the overall impression and should not be on a $3000 binocular. It's actually a top alpha glass! At least I payed for a such one.

    Another advantage of the NL is that they have eliminated the 'rolling ball effect' that some people experience with the EL. Also greater depth of clarity without having to refocus.

    I would love your comments about this question. Is the increased FOV on the 10x42 such that 8x42 lovers might move to 10x? Does the increased FOV change the calculus/balance re 8x v. 10x. Is there any reason not to move to 10x now that we have this NL 10x with the extra wide FOV?

    • @patricj951
      @patricj951 2 роки тому +4

      10x version has very slightly larger apparant field of view. I doubt it's noticeable for the eye. The true field of view of 8x is significantly larger, though. And the larger exit pupil with 8x provides as well brighter image at dim conditions and easier when it comes to eye placement.

      @@robgerety yes 10x42 NL Pure has the same FOV as 8x42 from other brands.
      But the 8x42 NL as a much bigger FOV . The biggest there is. 159 m.
      Thats so nice. And i love the exit pupil and more clear and quiet less shakey view.
      Its better for forest area i live.

      I have nl 842 and el 832 just like this reviewer. El is marginally brighter - yep, el not nl. Makes sense because the elements are thicker and more curved in the nl to achieve the fov, losing a fraction of the light. The spec sheet will not let you on this detail. Having said this, they are both super bright and neutral

    I think if you already own an EL the upgrade isn't worth it but for someone who's looking for an upgrade from a $500 bino it's totally worth it. For me it was like going from a 42 inch HDTV to an 80 inch 8K TV.

    • @LycoBirds
      @LycoBirds  3 роки тому

      Yes, good assessment. Some might even decide that upgrading to the EL line is good enough and not spend the extra money for the NL. Both lines are excellent. I think the bottom line is to try out different binoculars in person and see what fits you best.

      I disagree. I think the jump from EL to NL is significant in so many ways. After using a pair of NL you won't be able to go back to EL and feel satisfied.

    Thanks for review! You say that you cannot see the edge of the field with eyeglasses. Are the eyecups in the bottom position in the video? If so it seems like the useful eye relief is a bit wasted.

    • @LycoBirds
      @LycoBirds  3 роки тому

      Good question and I thought about this a bit today. I had the eyecups out to the first click, which is my normal habit with my 8x32 EL binos because the view feels slightly more comfortable to my eyes that way. If I put the eyecups all the way in then the field of view would be larger, but I'm not sure if I could see the entire field with my glasses on and I don't currently have the NL with me to test this. In any case, for me the EL series field of view is wide enough to functionally useful to me and the NL goes beyond that, but I'm not sure how much it would help me for the style of birding I mostly do (hawk watching).

    • @LycoBirds
      @LycoBirds  3 роки тому +3

      I got a chance to test the 8x42 NL binoculars again today. With the eyecups all the way in I cannot see the full field of view with my glasses on. I still feel like the field of view I can see is larger than I'll ever need for most practical purposes though.

      @@LycoBirds thanks for taking your time to try it out and inform about your experience about it. I know that the wider the apparant field of view is the more difficult to make the entire field clearly visible with eyeglasses. And this is also individually and depending on the face shape, and design of eyeglasses. I really want to try these binoculars out!

      Hi again!
      I have these binoculars since a few months. And actually the eye relief is sufficient for my eyeglasses demands, providing I use the right eyeglasses.
      These binos are excellent, and I ordered them with the forehead rest, which really helps to get a stable image, in my opinion.
      The only drawback I find is that the focuser wheel feels a bit too loose and I would like to have a more distinct action.

    Is 8x enough power for most birding situations in your opinion? I currently use 10x bins but I'm finding my hand shake annoying, to the point of struggling to see small details on birds, so I'm thinking of going down to 8x. I feel like I'll see more detail with 8x and less noticible hand shake than I will with 10x and more noticible hand shake. What are your thoughts and opinions on that? Any response is greatly appreciated!

    • @LycoBirds
      @LycoBirds  3 роки тому +8

      (This is Bobby, the "other" LycoBirds admin). I personally have always used 8x and never felt the need for higher magnification from my binoculars. For the few situations (distant waterfowl, shorebirds, etc.) where 8x isn't really sufficient, a spotting scope far outperforms what 10x binoculars would be able to do anyway, so that's what I'll use at that point. And for dealing with songbirds in trees, I'd definitely rather have the 8x to be able to find and track them better. Especially if you are having shake issues at 10x, I would definitely recommend at least giving 8x a try.

    Most birders bypass the Swarovski 10x32's and get a 10 or 8 x 42 bin. I bought a first generation EL 10x32 pair used years ago as my backup bin and I always thought it was the perfect field binocular. I purchased the Leica Notivid 10x42 to be my primary bin and it just seemed that everytime I was going out to bird in the field, I would still take the EL. There is something about the weight and compactness that I just loved. They never seemed to let me down. So I sold the Noctivid (beautiful bins, BTW) and bought the NL Pure 10x32's and I am just overjoyed. I know it seems redundant since I have the ELs but honestly, I have never seem a bin where a warbler or kinglet just pops into view with such crystal clear clarity and popping color rendition. Also, the headrest seems silly but it calms down the headshake of using a 10 power bin considerably. The NL Pure is an amazing binocular.

    • @patrickhanly7458
      @patrickhanly7458 2 роки тому

      @spinozasdreams Yes, my NL pure is more ergonomic and the clarity, contrast and color is a step above. But to be fair, I am comparing to a first generation EL, not a new one.

      @GM-bq6zo My Noctivid's view was stellar, but I don't remember it being better than the NL in the center. That might require a side by side. Ergonomically, for me, the NL is better.

      I agree I think 32mms are the best all rounder, and as they are so light they are great to carry and they don't hurt your neck. I do prefer 8x for less shake and slightly brighter image, so considering the 8x32 nl pure.

    • @LycoBirds
      @LycoBirds  2 роки тому +1

      It depends. If you rarely use binoculars then you probably won't be willing to spend a lot of money. On the other hand, active birders who use their binoculars every day are more than willing to spend $2,000 or $3,000 to get the best quality binoculars available. Keep in mind that binoculars will last for decades with proper care. It is a lot of money up front but may end up averaging out to only $100 a year.
