  • This IPL (intense pulsed light) hair removal device was found to be fully working except for the quartz flashlamp, which costs about $45 to replace (for 750 pulses). When new about 10 years ago, the machine would have sold for about $350-500! These devices work by heating hair follicles with intense light and destroying them, but they are not recommended for darker skin which blocks light and damages more superficial layers. Unlike the previous device I tore down (Tanda me by elos), this one doesn't seem to use radio frequencies. The quartz flashlamp also appears to not have any "smart" chip in it leaving me to wonder how it counts the number of pulses remaining in the lamp. An important lesson to be learned as well in the video is that you need to be careful discharging capacitors. Starting at 2:50 you can enjoy sparks flying as I discharge 3 large caps! Normally you would use a gentler method (alligator clips on large value resistor) to slowly discharge them to prevent possible damage. Since this was going in the garbage anyways I didn't care. Once again a fascinating teardown with quite complex electronics and even some kind of skin color detector (7:40)!

True, they put way too much effort in designing and building this. I never expected it, but this is not a typical self-care appliance. I believe it's more along the design of a medical health device so they spared no thoughts and cost in the complexity of this build.
