    How about some eggshells?

    They use oyster shell for human calcium supplements too....it’s called Oscal....it’s also really cheap....

    • @selectpet
      @selectpet  5 років тому +4

      That's interesting to learn. Is it sold at big box stores or only like health food or GNC type stores?

    • @jackanddan
      @jackanddan 5 років тому +2

      selectpet ....any drug store or supermarket....they usually go by “Oscal D” because they have vitamin D added as well....what you do here is probably much cheaper though....

      This may be cheaper but it is still cool to find more and more alternatives just incase one or the other isnt available

    An inexpensive way to boost Calcium. Keep a close eye on pH. It surprises me sometimes how much it does bring it up. I use it to buffer my water. Great vid.

      Ive had mixed results with it when it comes to ph. I'll have one tank that it changes and another no impact. I think it comes back to what it was to begin with and other contents. I used to use the oyster shells in some of my marine tanks years ago and thought why not for fresh.

    That's a great price for so much! Great tip and great video!

      For me it sure beats the prices for the same stuff marketed for aquariums

    ONce their shell has begun to be damaged (deteriorate etc), can the damage be undone? I had no idea what was happening to my nerite snail's shells until I read about calcium. No one ever told me about them needing it. Hoping calcium supplement will quickly stop the deterioration of their shells. Thank you.

      I'm no expert in any way, so I put things in simple terms for me to understand them. So I'll share how I think of snail shells with you. I think of snail shells like our teeth. Your teeth need calcium to continue to grow and be healthy. If your tooth gets a hole in it or gets damaged adding calcium wont make the hole grow together but it could help to keep the hole from getting bigger by making it stronger. Hope this makes since and helps

      Actually the snail can recover from shell damage if treated correctly!

      Thanks, many items we use for the aquarium have equivalents in other fields that are identical but a lit cheaper.

      Not sure of the price comparison. Might be able to find some finely powdered that could be multi-purposed and used for reptile supplements too.

    How much do you put and how often?

    • @selectpet
      @selectpet  4 роки тому +3

      It’s really up to you. It’s an additive depending on how much you want to alter your calcium content or ph or why ever you’re adding it. I have now moved to filling a media bag with the crushed shell and placing it near the filter flow in my tank. You may want more or less depending on your water, tank size and need.
