  • The heat and drought have been brutal, and some of the native perennials are really struggling.

I am very thankful for the cloudy, rainy day that we had on Friday! Thanks for sharing your experiences--both the good and the bad. I think gardening is a lot about learning what will work well in certain situations. Experimenting and learning from other people's experience are two ways to get that knowledge.

Thank you for your honesty about the native plants…relieves my freely of guilt for choosing other adapted plants that grow in my region. Enjoy your channel!

I am in zone 7b and deal with marine clay. Echinacea was difficult to get established at times but once it was it has thrived with no water, 10+ hours of sun and taken the heat like a champ. Though, it it definitely looking a little tired but it’s been blooming for weeks now. Hope yours hang in there.

Good honest video on the drought conditions you are facing in your gardens. We love American native plants and have some in our garden in Ireland, we have monarda, echinaeca, gaura, rudbeckia coreopsis, gaillardia and yarrow. Our record temperature was 90 in late July 2022 which lasted for one week and I don't know how you cope with the temperatures you have been getting for the last while.

“Pycnanthemum muticum for the win!” I love that plant! Mt Cuba Center just started a mountain mint trial. I walked thru it yesterday and was surprised at the varieties (more than the 2-3 I know) and particularly the way different eco types perform there.

Thanks for the honest content. It’s my experience too that the knowledgeable choices I make in plantings isn’t always successful. Conditions are bonkers. Also, I’m not able/willing to keep up with maintenance sometimes. Have you grown prairie smoke or echinacea pallida?

Is anything still alive in the bed at your street entrance?

Oddly yes! The ornamental grasses look amazing. When I get back in town I’ll make a video from there.
